St. Mary Medical Center is vastly different! St. Mary is a special place where state-of-the-art medical care is delivered with skill and compassion to the whole person — mind, body, and spirit. St. Mary is a place where dedicated, talented people work together to not only heal, but also prevent illness before it strikes. It is where the latest diagnostic and treatment options in fighting cancer, cardiovascular disease, orthopedic conditions, and emergency medical problems ensure the highest levels of patient satisfaction. 2 For more than 30 years, St. Mary has joyfully fulfilled its mission of providing high-quality care to everyone, especially the poor and underserved, both at the medical center and through its Community Health Ministries in Bensalem. What inspires me to be part of the extended St. Mary family is to see the medical center’s technological growth coupled with hands-on, personal care from devoted staff. In 2005, St. Mary started one of its most significant expansion projects to meet the evolving healthcare needs of our community. To support this endeavor, the St. Mary Foundation launched a $5.5 million capital campaign to help fund the $60 million investment in facility, equipment, and technology upgrades. Through your generosity, St. Mary made great strides implementing its strategic growth plan in 2005. Some of the year’s highlights include: • Introduction of IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy) at the St. Mary Regional Cancer Center • Construction of a $21.5 million Cardiovascular Care Unit and $5.5 million Emergency Department expansion, which includes a new parking garage • Construction of an orthopedic surgical suite and two new electrophysiology (EP) laboratories with biplane imaging • Enhancements in computer technology, such as a new digital radiology system known as PACS (Picture Archival and Communications System) and an Emergency Department patient information system known as IBEX • Diagnostic advances, such as new MRI capabilities for breast and prostate imaging, 64-slice CT scanning, digital mammography, and three-dimensional cardiac ultrasound • Modernization and expansion of the Clinical Laboratory • Renovation of the kitchen and introduction of room-service dining Much has been accomplished, but more work lies ahead. With your continued support, we can fund the next phase of service and facility expansions at St. Mary. Those expansions include a comprehensive breast center for early diagnosis of breast cancer and further enhancements to the St. Mary Regional Cancer Center. Together, we can ensure that St. Mary continues to serve our families’ healthcare needs – today and for generations to come. Sincerely, Frank Guarrieri, Esq. Chair, St. Mary Foundation Board of Directors 3 Without a doubt, Mike and Sue Wert’s business sense, creative flair, and leadership abilities have contributed to the successful launch of the Access to Excellence: When Nothing Else Matters Capital Campaign at St. Mary Medical Center. The fundraising goal — $5.5 million — will offset costs of the medical center’s nearly $60 million investment in service, technology, and facility enhancements. The Werts are co-chairing the Capital Campaign, along with James McCaffrey, a member of the St. Mary Medical Center Board of Directors, and Sidney T. Yates, Esq., Honorary Chairman of the Capital Campaign. “Through our role in the campaign, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many community members and to tell the medical center’s story to people who may not have heard it before or have not heard it in an updated way. It’s been very meaningful,” says Mr. Wert, who has sat on the St. Mary Medical Center Board of Directors since 1996 and currently serves as Chairman. Mrs. Wert is highly regarded for her dedication to the award-winning St. Mary Healing Gardens, which she founded in 2001 with Carter van Dyke in memory of their mothers. “Our mothers were friends; they both lived in a local retirement community and had received care at St. Mary. After they both passed away, Carter and I talked about what we could do to give back to the medical center for taking such good care of our mothers — and the Healing Gardens were born,” explains Mrs. Wert, who also serves as Treasurer of the St. Mary Foundation Board. During Mr. Wert’s near-decade of volunteering with St. Mary, he’s watched the medical center diligently implement its strategic growth plan to meet the community’s changing healthcare needs. “St. Mary can handle ever-more-difficult and highly specialized types of treatment and therapies, starting with its first open-heart surgery in 1997. Many of the services people once had to seek outside the community now can be performed here,” he says. What keeps this couple going is their shared desire to help people understand just how much St. Mary contributes to the region’s quality of life. “St. Mary is a wonderful, missiondriven organization of caring, talented, and dedicated people. We want everyone to know how valuable it is to our community,” says Mrs. Wert. “St. Mary is a wonderful, missiondriven organization of caring, talented, and dedicated people. We want everyone to know how valuable it is to our community.” MIKE AND SUE WERT St. Mary Board Members 4 5 6 About six years ago, St. Mary Foundation Board Member John Smithson suggested to his friend Ed Noonan that he consider joining the Board. Impressed with the overall care his family received throughout the years as patients at the medical center, Mr. Noonan was eager to get involved. “In addition to serving as Secretary of the St. Mary Foundation Board, I am a contributor to the medical center’s Access to Excellence Capital Campaign. My wife and I are proud to support St. Mary while doing something important for the community in which our family lives,” says Mr. Noonan, chairman and CEO of a reinsurance company. “It’s remarkable to see all of the positive changes the medical center has gone through in the short period of time I have been involved in fundraising.” To show their appreciation for all of the dedicated hours and hard work provided by the staff of the Emergency Department (ED), the Noonans purchased a table at the 2005 Gala and donated it to the ED nurses so they could attend the elegant black-tie event. “It was a small token of our gratitude for the care and commitment they exhibit each day for all patients,” explains Mr. Noonan. He believes the growth in St. Mary’s areas of technology and new services is truly an investment for the community. “St. Mary is a bedrock in the community. The advanced medical care it offers is second to none. And, the medical center is able to expand and add new technologies while maintaining the original vision and mission in which the Sisters of St. Francis founded St. Mary in 1973. Through our fundraising efforts, we will ensure the medical center continues to provide top-notch services to patients, close to their home and families, for years to come.” “It’s remarkable to see all of the positive changes the medical center has gone through in the short period of time I have been involved in fundraising.” ED AND ANDREA NOONAN 7 “Thanks to the dedicated volunteers who work hard to raise much-needed funds for the medical center, we are able to do our work on behalf of patients more efficiently and effectively.” JUNG SHIN, MD MARK IGOE, DO ZENON GIBAS, MD Langhorne Pathology Associates 8 Zenon Gibas, MD, and Mark Igoe, DO, found themselves in the hub of St. Mary Medical Center’s expansion over the past year. In 2005, the medical center invested nearly $1 million to enlarge and modernize its Clinical Laboratory, which handles specimen collection, processing, analysis, and reporting for more than 2 million procedures each year. “Thanks to the dedicated volunteers who work hard to raise much-needed funds for the medical center, we are able to do our work on behalf of patients more efficiently and effectively,” says Dr. Gibas, Medical Director of the Clinical Laboratory. “The recent changes to our department have had a positive impact on the delivery of faster and reliable service to our physicians and better outcomes for our patients.” As pathologists, Drs. Gibas and Igoe oversee inpatient and outpatient laboratory testing for all departments in the medical center, as well as perform pathology testing of tissues. Tests performed by the Clinical Lab help St. Mary physicians diagnose and monitor the effectiveness of treatment for cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and other medical conditions. Along with a 2,100-square-foot addition that enlarged work space for colleagues, the expansion project added new computerized systems and instrumentation to the Lab’s comprehensive capabilities. With its new equipment, the Lab has been able to bring in-house some specialty tests that previously were sent to an outside laboratory. This dramatically increased the Lab’s capacity to process, analyze, and report test results. “With improved laboratory information technology systems, we are able to gain access to a patient’s medical history, other laboratory studies for that patient, as well as Radiology studies,” says Dr. Igoe. “With all this information at our fingertips, we can achieve more precision in our work and provide better service to patients.” Both physicians are enthusiastic about St. Mary’s strategic plans for the future and its positive effects on the region. “St. Mary is a top medical center, and we are excited to support its continued growth,” says Dr. Gibas. During his 21-year affiliation with St. Mary Medical Center, Paul Weiser, MD, has seen many changes within the medical center and the community it serves. As Medical Director of Radiology at St. Mary, Dr. Weiser believes the expansion of services and state-of-the-art equipment has benefited patients greatly. Through the generous support of donors in 2005, St. Mary upgraded its diagnostic imaging services and information technologies for inpatient and outpatient care. At St. Mary Langhorne MRI, new, highly precise magnetic resonance imaging equipment helps physicians diagnose breast and prostate cancers in their earlier, more treatable stages. “The non-invasive MRI technology provides superior image quality while reducing scan time. It also provides a higher level of diagnostic accuracy once suspicious results are found using other imaging studies. This is a major step forward for patients who require sophisticated medical imaging,” explains Dr. Weiser. In 2005, St. Mary Medical Center also distinguished itself as one of the region’s first to introduce a digital radiology system known as PACS (Picture Archival and Communication System). The medical center uses PACS for all radiology services, including x-ray, MRI, CAT scan, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine. “By capturing the image electronically, PACS eliminates the need to process film and allows doctors to access and view patient images over a secure Internet-based channel. The system also allows physicians and technicians to digitally manipulate images through brightening, darkening, adjusting contrast, or enlarging select areas without reducing overall image quality,” explains Dr. Weiser. For more than 20 years, Dr. Weiser and his associates have supported St. Mary, including their recent gift to the Access to Excellence Capital Campaign. In the years ahead, Dr. Weiser knows the medical center will continue to grow in response to the ever-changing needs of the community. “The average patient is living longer, and we need to be prepared to provide the highest quality of care for our aging population. It’s wonderful to see St. Mary taking the lead,” he says. “The average patient is living longer, and we need to be prepared to provide the highest quality of care for our aging population. It’s wonderful to see St. Mary taking the lead.” PAUL WEISER , MD Radiology Affiliates Imaging 9 “Helping raise funds for St. Mary has been so rewarding… individuals can specify where they want their donations to go within the medical center, which really helps you see your gifts make a difference.” RON, JOHN, AND CHRIS GIGLIOTTI The Gigliotti Group Inc. Philanthropic work is a family affair for The Gigliotti Group, an award-winning custom homebuilder in Newtown. Deeply rooted in the community, the Gigliottis are long-time supporters and friends of St. Mary Medical Center. A third-generation partner in the family business, Ron Gigliotti has followed in the footsteps of his father Chris, who served as Chairman of the St. Mary Foundation Board of Directors for 12 years. After Ron Gigliotti’s mother, Marion, lost her brave battle with ovarian cancer when she was 49 years old, the family honored her memory with a generous gift to the St. Mary Regional Cancer Center. Part of the treatment area was named in tribute to Mrs. Gigliotti. “Helping raise funds for St. Mary has been so rewarding for my family and me throughout the years,” says Ron Gigliotti. “One of the benefits of giving is that individuals can specify where they want their donations to go within the medical center, which really helps you see your gifts make a difference.” Mr. Gigliotti believes this is an exciting time in St. Mary’s history and has enjoyed watching the medical center grow over the years. “With the new advances in diagnostic procedures and medical equipment, physicians at St. Mary are able to do 10 their jobs better and more efficiently, while at the same time continuing to exhibit the compassionate care patients have come to expect,” says Mr. Gigliotti. “The doctors, nurses, and technicians genuinely care about those they treat.” The St. Mary Foundation’s Golf Outing always has interested Mr. Gigliotti, who has headed the event’s planning committee for the past four years. “This event gets more popular every year. It’s a fun day and, more importantly, a great way to support the programs and services offered by St. Mary,” Mr. Gigliotti says. In the years ahead, Mr. Gigliotti is eager to see St. Mary continue to build its specialty areas, including orthopedics and cardiovascular care. “As our community grows in size and gets older, we definitely see an increase in people needing healthcare services,” says Mr. Gigliotti. “St. Mary is steadfastly committed to ensuring the highest-quality care from the finest medical professionals. The plans underway to build advanced cancer, cardiovascular, orthopedics, and emergency services will provide the community with the best care — when people need it. It has been great for me and my family to get involved and see the difference we can make through our community hospital.” “With its focus on alternative therapies and care for the mind, body, and spirit, St. Mary Holistic Center is an important resource for people who are fighting cancer.” JAMES AND CHRISTINE ARMETTA Christine’s Restaurant Since 1998, St. Mary Medical Center has benefited from the generosity of chef and restaurant owner James Armetta and his wife Christine, who is an Oncology Research Coordinator at the St. Mary Regional Cancer Center and also serves on the Women’s Guild Board of Directors. The Armettas frequently donate gift certificates to their popular Lower Makefield restaurant, Christine’s, in support of the Gala, Golf Outing, and other events St. Mary holds throughout the year. As local business owners, the Armettas believe it’s important to give back to the community that gives them so much. “Without the community, our restaurant would not be successful, so we feel it’s important to turn around and show our support. Our three children were born at St. Mary, and my wife works there, so giving to the medical center is a natural fit for us,” says Mr. Armetta. Dedicated donors such as the Armettas helped fund construction of a new wing at the St. Mary Regional Cancer Center. The building addition includes a patient waiting room, dressing room, additional chemotherapy suite, consult room, and two offices. Expansion of the treatment area added a new linear accelerator with IMRT technology. IMRT, or intensity modulated radiation therapy, is a recent treatment breakthrough. The linear accelerator precisely targets cancerous tumors inside the body, minimizing damage to healthy tissue near the tumor site. Mrs. Armetta meets many community members with cancer through her position at St. Mary — she helps enroll patients in clinical trials of new treatments for the disease — and believes strongly in the medical center’s holistic view of healing. Holistic care treats the whole person, not just the disease. “With its focus on alternative therapies and care for the mind, body, and spirit, St. Mary Holistic Center is an important resource for people who are fighting cancer, as are the supportive-care services made available through the Women’s Guild Cancer Healing Ministries,” says Mrs. Armetta. It’s that hands-on, personalized approach to patient care that inspires the Armettas’ continued involvement with St. Mary. “If my wife, my children, or I ever need medical care, I want the medical center to have every possible means to help us. I want to ensure St. Mary is equipped to do everything possible to help all who come to the medical center for quality care,” says Mr. Armetta. 11 “St. Mary provides leading-edge care for patients, and the healthcare professionals are quality people. We hope our gift helps St. Mary expand its services.” AMY MILLMAN St. Mary Legacy Society 12 KOCHIS Amy Millman Kochis, a two-year member of the St. Mary Medical Center Foundation’s Planned Giving Advisory Council, knows both personally and professionally the benefits of being a planned giving donor. As the Managing Director of the Private Wealth Management Division of Mellon Financial Corporation, Ms. Millman Kochis has first-hand experience with charitable gifts. She is a sponsor of the Philadelphia Planned Giving Day, the National Conference on Planned Giving, and many training events for planned giving professionals. Ms. Millman Kochis and her husband were inspired to make a planned gift to St. Mary by the professionalism and enthusiasm of the Foundation staff. After carefully considering all their options, they decided to fund a generous charitable gift annuity through the St. Mary planned giving program. Flexible annuities allow young donors to make a gift and save for retirement at the same time. The medical center benefits immediately, and the annuitants get a tax break and a lifetime income. “St. Mary provides leading-edge care for patients, and the healthcare professionals are quality people. We hope our gift helps St. Mary expand its services,” says Ms. Millman Kochis. “I tell everybody this: ‘I love St. Mary. When the day comes that I get sick, need care, or have to be in a hospital, the only place I want to go is St. Mary.’” The Honorable GENE DIGIROLAMO Pennsylvania State Representative Gene DiGirolamo is proud to have St. Mary Community Health Ministries in his legislative district. Community Health Ministries — which includes the Mother Bachmann Maternity Center, the St. Mary Children’s Health Center, and the St. Mary Family Resource Center in Bensalem — provide free or low-cost medical care and social services to the at-risk and underserved in lower Bucks County. “I first got involved with St. Mary through Community Health Ministries when I was elected 12 years ago. Also, both of my grandparents, to whom I was close, received wonderful care at St. Mary when they were ill,” recalls Rep. DiGirolamo, who has become a close advocate of the medical center over the years. Rep. DiGirolamo’s commitment to St. Mary extends far beyond philanthropic gifts and his participation on the medical center’s Advisory Board. In 2005, he secured a $500,000 grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. The grant will help fund construction of an orthopedic surgery suite, another important, fast-growing patient-care area. Each suite is specially equipped for minimally invasive procedures, total and partial joint replacement, sports injuries, spine and back surgery, hand surgery, and trauma care. The medical center’s focus on patient satisfaction and personal touch has particularly impressed Rep. DiGirolamo. “Recently, my mother-in-law was hospitalized at St. Mary for a heart condition. She got great treatment and really enjoyed the new food and menu. People complain you don’t have any choice in hospital food, but St. Mary has done a wonderful job with its new room service dining. The medical center also has made great strides in expanding services in the Emergency Department,” he notes. On behalf of his family and his constituents, supporting St. Mary is important to the Representative, who hopes to see the medical center continue to grow and flourish. “I tell everybody this: ‘I love St. Mary. When the day comes that I get sick, need care, or have to be in a hospital, the only place I want to go is St. Mary,’” he says. 13 Foundations “We’re awed by St. Mary’s commitment and dedication to serving others…St. Mary supports the health of the entire community by helping those most in need.” INDEPENDENCE BLUE CROSS Charitable Medical Care Grant Program To help St. Mary Community Health Ministries further its mission of caring for uninsured women and children in Bucks County, Independence Blue Cross (IBC), awarded a $225,000 grant to St Mary’s Mother Bachmann Maternity Center in 2005. With more than 350 births at Mother Bachmann Maternity Center each year, the busy center will use IBC’s grant to hire another midwife and expand its hours of operation. St. Mary already has used some of the funding to buy a van to transport patients from the clinic to St. Mary Medical Center for specialist care. The IBC Charitable Medical Care Grant Program provides financial support to nonprofit, privately funded clinics in southeastern Pennsylvania that provide free or low-cost care to the area’s uninsured. The grant is a three-year 14 financial commitment that may be used for general operating expenses, unfunded pharmaceutical needs, medical supplies, specialty care, diagnostic tests, or other areas that are critical to the clinic’s delivery of care. Since 2004, IBC has dedicated nearly $4.7 million to 25 clinics throughout the region. IBC expanded the program in 2006 and will set aside up to $2 million per year through 2010 for a total of $10 million committed to help area programs. “We’re awed by St. Mary’s commitment and dedication to serving others and honored to help by providing a grant,” says IBC President and CEO Joseph A. Frick. “St. Mary makes enormous contributions to the physical and spiritual well-being of those it serves, but the impact goes further — the center supports the health of the entire community by helping those most in need.” From left to right: Julie Kanto, President, Chase Your Dreams Corporation; Terri Rivera, RN, St. Mary Medical Center; Dr. Ernst G. Schmidt, Chase Your Dreams; and Greg Wozniak, St. Mary President & CEO. Chase Your Dreams Corporation, based in Huntingdon Valley, Pa., is a generous donor of $150,000 over a threeyear period to fund emergency shelter and social services at the St. Mary Family Resource Center, part of St. Mary Community Health Ministries. This program provides a wide range of services to address clients’ self-sufficiency and parenting needs, including life-skills training, education and employment counseling and training, access to healthcare, and housing counseling. The Emergency Shelter Apartment Program started in 1998 with three apartments for homeless pregnant women and their families. With the Chase Your Dreams grant, the program was able to expand to include three additional apartments and the social services necessary to support the program. Dr. Ernst G. Schmidt, founder of the Chase Your Dream Corporation always has had concern for these women, but more importantly, for the children who are affected. “We were glad to be able to partner with such a great program to help more women and their children get back on their feet and enable them with the time and resources to work towards a positive future,” Schmidt says. This program provides a wide range of services to address clients’ self-sufficiency and parenting needs. CHASE YOUR DREAMS CORPORATION Huntington Valley The Family Resource Center is a collaborative effort between St. Mary Medical Center, the Bucks County Housing Group, Catholic Social Services, the YWCA of Bucks County, VITA, and Family Service Association of Bucks County. All residents can fully partake of St. Mary Resource Center enrichment programs and life-skills support. 15 St. Mary Women’s Guild When St. Mary Medical Center announced its $5.5 million Capital Campaign in 2005, the Women’s Guild was determined to continue its tradition of supporting St. Mary’s technological growth and commitment to compassionate patient care. That determination inspired an ambitious $730,000 pledge — the largest gift in the Women’s Guild history. “Because of the high incidence of cancer in Bucks County — second only to heart disease — the Women’s Guild felt its support would best serve the community through the St. Mary Regional Cancer Center, specifically by helping to fund high-dose radiation and a renovated chemotherapy suite,” explains Women’s Guild President Marie Duess. The Women’s Guild has been one of the most committed sponsors in helping St. Mary ensure service to all who need care, regardless of ability to pay. Since its inception, the Guild has raised more than $2.9 million for advanced medical technologies, facility improvements, and compassionate initiatives. “In 2005, through fundraising and profits from the Beehive Gift Shop, the Women’s Guild donated $120,000 in support of St. Mary’s compassionate initiatives, such as Cancer Healing Ministries, Community Health Ministries in Bensalem, and scholarships for junior volunteers who are pursuing a career in healthcare,” says Mrs. Duess. The Women’s Guild especially appreciates the support it received from local organizations in 2005, such as two corporate gifts of $5,000 each from Church & Dwight Corporation, Princeton, and Teva Neuroscience. Also, the Profile Shop, Morrisville, designated the Guild’s Cancer Healing Ministries as its charity of choice, donating more than $7,000 through sales of “Circle of Hope” bracelets. 16 Patrick and Dottie Fiedler representing Church & Dwight Corporation of Princeton (far right) present the Women’s Guild with a $5,000 charitable donation for the Cancer Healing Ministries. Accepting this generous contribution are, from left to right, Women’s Guild Treasurer Irene Slaman, St. Mary President and CEO Greg Wozniak, and Women’s Guild President Marie Duess. In 2005, through fundraising and profits from the Beehive Gift Shop, the Women’s Guild donated $120,000 in support of St. Mary’s compassionate initiatives. St. Mary Healing Gardens The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has recognized the beautiful, tranquil Healing Gardens at St. Mary Medical Center with a 2005 Suburban Greening Award. This award is given annually to outstanding public-space plantings in suburban Philadelphia, New Jersey and Delaware. Judges consider criteria such as plant variety, horticultural practices, use of space, and maintenance. The Healing Gardens are supported solely by community donations and are designed to promote health and wellness in a holistic environment, true to the mission of treating the whole patient — body, mind, and spirit — at St. Mary Medical Center. The gardens offer respite to patients, families, physicians, colleagues, and visitors. A second garden with a patio seating area was created outside the Emergency Department. Plans are underway for additional gardens within the Cancer Center and on a roof top outside the Intensive Care and Cardiovascular Care Units. The Healing Gardens are supported solely by community donations and are designed to promote health and wellness in a holistic environment, true to the mission of treating the whole patient – body, mind, and spirit – at St. Mary Medical Center. 17 2005 Technology Highlights ONCOLOGY CARDIAC • St. Mary Regional Cancer Center was the first in Lower Bucks County to offer IMRT, the most technologically advanced and precise method of external beam radiation therapy available today. • To meet the region’s increasing need for advanced cardiovascular services, St. Mary built a $21.5 million Cardiovascular Care Unit (CVCU). The CVCU includes private homelike patient suites and special amenities for family members who may be visiting — in addition to the latest innovations in patient-care technology. • In addition to IMRT, St. Mary introduced its new team of board-certified radiation oncologists in October 2005. • Patients at the St. Mary Regional Cancer Center have access to clinical studies of new technologies and treatments for the disease. In 2005, our cancer research program included clinical trials for lung, breast, colon, and prostate cancer; melanoma; cancer of the esophagus and pancreas; multiple myeloma; and Hodgkin’s disease. • People with suspected tumors of the breast and prostate are benefiting from innovative new technologies at St. Mary Langhorne MRI. In 2005, St. Mary upgraded its MRI equipment and added expanded evening and weekend hours to improve scheduling convenience for patients. EMERGENCY AND TRAUMA SERVICES • St. Mary began construction of a significant Emergency Department (ED) addition in 2005. This expansion includes a seven-bed pediatric unit, bright and inviting children’s play area, larger patient reception area, and new parking garage. • As part of the ED expansion, a new nine-bed Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) was opened at St. Mary in November 2005. The CDU provides a comfortable place for 23-hour patient observation while physicians await test results and decide whether to discharge or admit the patient. • The nationally recognized St. Mary Primary Stroke Center — which provides the latest advances in neuroradiological imaging and pharmaceutical therapy — earned the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) in 2005. This is the first and only JCAHO-certified stroke program in Bucks County. 18 CARE • In February 2005, the St. Mary Electrophysiology (EP) Lab was among the first in the nation to implant a new type of internal cardiac defibrillator. The innovative medical device has an early-warning system that alerts patients if they are experiencing symptoms of congestive heart failure. • St. Mary built two new EP Labs on the ground floor of the medical center in March 2005. Both EP Labs are equipped with biplane imaging technology, a diagnostic advance that allows doctors to view the heart simultaneously from two different directions. • In 2005, the St. Mary Cardiac Catheterization Lab performed its first carotid stent procedure to treat carotid artery disease and a new procedure to close congenital defects in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart. • Through the use of three-dimensional digital echocardiography, which was introduced at St. Mary in 2005, cardiologists are diagnosing heart disease with greater precision than ever before. The new technology — also known as cardiac ultrasound — provides highdefinition, real-time images of the human heart. ORTHOPEDICS • St. Mary enhanced its surgical services in 2005 with the addition of a dedicated orthopedic surgical suite — the first redesign in this area since the 1990s. Orthopedic conditions are the third leading cause of illness in our community, and orthopedics is St. Mary’s fastest-growing service area. A second orthopedic surgical suite is planned for 2006. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY • St. Mary implemented the IBEX PulseCheck® Emergency Department Information System in 2005 to streamline patient flow in the Emergency Department and Trauma Center. • In 2005, St. Mary upgraded its cardiac information technology to speed the processing and reporting of results from cardiac catheterizations, nuclear medicine studies, and EKGs — expediting patient care and enhancing quality. • The latest in diagnostic imaging technology arrived at St. Mary Medical Center in June 2005. The new Picture Archival and Communication System (PACS) converts x-rays and other radiology images to digital files rather than film. This dramatically speeds the process of diagnosing illnesses and injuries, so prompt treatment can be delivered. • In 2005, St. Mary laid plans to implement the innovative Meditech Clinical Information System. With Meditech, physicians, nurses, and others involved in patient care will be able to create, view, and share electronic patient records from any computer with Internet access in the medical center or a physician’s office. The system links data from all of the medical center’s clinical areas into one secure, streamlined database. QUALITY AND SAFETY • St. Mary is aggressive in its focus on quality and safety, including participation in national and regional initiatives, such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement 100,000 Lives Campaign and Partnership for Patient Care Collaborative. OUTPATIENT SERVICES • In 2005, the Neurology department expanded its services to include long-term EEG monitoring. This procedure is used to diagnose seizure disorders such as epilepsy and underlying neurological conditions that may not be seen during a routine EEG. • St. Mary is adding six beds to its Sleep/Wake Disorders Center, which has performed nearly 7,000 sleep studies since its founding in 1994. • To augment the continued high quality and rapid turnaround of cell cultures, blood tests, biopsies, and other medical tests, St. Mary invested nearly $1 million in renovations and new equipment to its Clinical Laboratory in 2005. • In 2005, digital mammography and a 64-slice computed topography (CT) system were added to St. Mary’s advanced Radiology capabilities. The new technology will help physicians more quickly and precisely diagnose life-threatening illnesses, such as stroke, trauma, and cardiovascular disease. PATIENT SATISFACTION • In October 2005, St. Mary remodeled its kitchen in preparation for the introduction of “At Your Request” room service dining. Patients can order freshly prepared meals, sandwiches, and snacks from a restaurant-style menu. Each order is delivered, hot and fresh, within 45 minutes of the patient’s call. • The Emergency Department of St. Mary Medical Center scored in the top 10 percent of hospitals in a national patient satisfaction survey. 19 St. Mary Legacy Society Recognizing the critical importance of planned gifts for the future growth of St. Mary, the St. Mary Medical Center and St. Mary Medical Center Foundation Boards of Directors founded the St. Mary Legacy Society in September 2004 with a charter membership period that lasted until June 30, 2005. Thirty-three generous individuals and couples joined as Charter Members by establishing life-income gifts and making estate commitments valued at more than $5 million. The 58 members of the St. Mary Legacy Society have committed or given more than $8 million in contributions to ensure St. Mary continues to provide advanced, high-quality medical care to our community for generations to come. The St. Mary Legacy Society recognizes friends who have remembered St. Mary through their will, trust, or beneficiary designation form, or by funding a life-income gift. Life-income gifts include charitable trusts and charitable gift annuities. You can join the St. Mary Legacy Society by: • Making a bequest in your will • Naming the St. Mary Medical Center Foundation as a beneficiary in a qualified retirement plan or life insurance policy • Establishing a charitable trust to benefit the medical center • Funding a charitable gift annuity with the Foundation One advantage of the St. Mary Legacy Society is that membership is perpetual. Once you join, your generosity always will be remembered. The 58 members of the St. Mary Legacy Society have committed or given more than $8 million in contributions to ensure St. Mary continues to provide advanced, high-quality medical care to our community for generations to come. 20 Anonymous* Mrs. Ruth M.
