Field Markers
On October 10, the
5-1 Princeville Princes visited the 6-0 Flying Geese for
a Homecoming showdown.
The Geese took charge early
as Ryan Hammons sprinted
into the end zone untouched. The Geese came
out fired up in the second
half. Junior quarterback,
Chris Jackson, hit senior
tight end, Chris Dooley, for
two touchdowns, which
sealed the game for the
Geese. Once again the Geese
were victorious, handing a
20-8 loss to Princeville.

perfect end to the enjoyable Homecoming
week. The Homecoming theme was "A
Night at the Oscars." The dinner dance was
held at the Elks Lodge, and Anthony's Great

included roast beef and fettuccine. After the
dinner, the floor was cleared for a night of
dancing. At 10:00 Libby VanDeRostyne and

The Wethersfield F/S Volleyball team was made up of a young team
with only two returning starters. The
season record was 9-7 and a conference
record of 5-3, giving the team second
place in the LTC. Coach Fairman said,
"The 1997 F/S volleyball year has been
a rebuilding one." Special awards

Three-Peat
For the third time, the Lady
Geese made their legacy in the IHSA
Regional competition. Championship
victory was so sweet for the Lady Geese
that they offered themselves a threepeat of it.
Led by a talented group of seniors, the team posted a 23-7-1 record.
After suffering an early season defeat
to Westmer, which was their first conference loss in three years, they pulled
together to finish off the season with
second place in the Lincoln Trail Conference.
With a confident outlook and
the experience of five returning letter
winners, the Lady Geese will be up to
the challenge for another championship and successful season.

A Dream Season
The fresh/soph football team claimed
a share of the LTC conference championship by
posting a perfect 8-0 record. The last game of
the season, which was scheduled to be played
against undefeated Stark County, was postponed
twice and eventually cancelled due to snow and
rain. Because of the cancellation, the conference
championship was considered a tie between
Stark County and Wethersfield. Overall, the
team was not exteremely big, so they relied on
speed to be successful. If the players can continue to work hard, the Wethersfield football program should continue with its winning tradition.

Touchdowns to Remember
The 1997 edition of Flying Geese Football saw the
Geese return 15 letterwinners from a 1996 squad that went
7-3. Fifty-five players answered the call in early August for
two-a-day practices. The Geese along with Stark Co.,
ROWVA, Princeville, and Cambridge were the teams picked
to compete for the conference championship. The first game
of the year against Stark County was the closest regular season test the Geese had, winning a close 8-6 contest. That
win led the Geese to an unblemished 9-0 conference record
and 10-0 regular season record and outright Lincoln Trail
Conference Champions. An undefeated regular season
hadn't occurred in thirty years of Geese football and was
only the fifth time that it had ever occurred in school history. The final AP poll ranked the Geese as 5th in class 1A.
The playoffs saw the Geese beat Jacksonville Routt
H.S. in the prelims at home. That win insured another home
game for the Geese in round two and a possible quarter
final matchup with Stark County. Ridgeview H.S. of Colfax
was the second round opponent. They proved better than
the Geese on that November day as they beat the Geese 3622 and brought a close to a great season. Senior members
included: Captains Brad Carlock, Ryan Buck, Tramane Jordan, and Andy Newman; Seth Peed, Matt Huber, Ryan
Hammons, David Perkins, Luke Hawkins, Tim Peed, Pat
Griffin, Dale Dykeman, Jeremiah Fondaw, Chris Dooley,
Chad Forsythe, Troy Jordan, and Justin Rider.
These seniors led the Flying Geese Football squad
to many firsts in 1997 and left everybody with some great
memories.

football career. Shown here, Brad cuts back and looks for a block from

Go the Distance
The Lady Geese
Cross Country team completed their second season
for the '97 school year. The
team had five seniors returning from last year and also
gained sophomore, Michelle
Livek. The team motto and
source of motivation this
year was "Think Pink, Be
The Bunny."
Although the ladies
did not win any of their
meets, they improved drastically from last year. Every
member improved their
time. Most improved was
Kera McElvain by taking six
minutes off her time. Beth
Martin won every dual meet
and the invitationals at
Princeton and Elmwood.
B. Martin, J. Jepson,
L. McElvain, and M. Livek
competed at the Regional in
Elmwood, where Beth finished in first place. Beth then

A Season of Success
The 1997-98 WHS girls' varsity
basketball team upheld the winning
tradition of recent seasons. Senior TriCaptains Rachel Morrissey, Tracy
Nelson, and Ali Tomlinson led the Flying Geese to a 23-6 overall record that
included a 3rd place finish at the
Brimfield Thanksgiving Tourney, Consolation Champions of the Chicago
Public League Christmas Tourney, 2nd
place in the Lincoln Trail Conference,
and winning the 1998 Kewanee Regional.
Though the season ended too
soon with a loss to Alleman in the
Aledo Sectional Championship game,
the team had a great run of victories
during the last six weeks of the season.
This included a Senior Night win over
the LTC champs, Stark County. This
win extended the Wethersfield girls'
home winning streak to 32 games.

also led the team to their biggest win of the season when
they beat Galva in the Regional Semi-finals. While
reflecting on the season, the
team's new coach, Greg

Stayin' Alive
The 1997-98 pom pon squad started its season by
attending the NCA dance camp in Platteville. They won
numerous awards including spirit poms and individual
awards for excellence. The pom pon girls competed at
the Hog Days' talent show and at a dance competition in
Buda. The poms had many great performances during
football season, including the routine from their Little Miss
Pom Clinic. At the start of basketball season the squad
was excited to show off their new set of green and silver
metallic pom pons. They kept the crowd enthused with
routines to a variety of music from disco to swing. For a
new fund-raiser they made a quilt which was later raffled
off. The pom pon squad finished their year by doing a
combined senior routine with the cheerleaders.

Running In Time
With nine varsity team members and several untested underclassmen, the '98 girls' track team was very
successful. Out of the twenty-one
scheduled meets, we had but eight
meets by the time of sectionals because
of bad weather. However, the Lady
Geese finished the season with a record
of 70-3. They finished first in several
meets including the Eisenbarth Relays,
Cambridge Relays, Princeville Relays,
Varsity LTC, and the Rockridge Sectional.

Getting Outs
The Flying Geese
Varsity Baseball Team
ended the 1998 season
with a 16-8-1 record. The
sixteen wins tie the record
for most wins in a season
which was set last year.
Big wins against
Princeville,
Kewanee,
Rockridge, Dunlap, and
Sherrard were high points
of the season. A tough loss
to Henry/Bradford in a
second round regional
game would end the season
all too soon.
Christian Jackson,
Scott Mallery, and Josh
Odell picked up the team
defensively. Mallery was
positioned as catcher while
Odell played a solid short
stop. Jackson pitched a
great season and ended
with a 9-1 record. Also
noted were Jackson's two
saves.
Seth Peed, Scott
Mallery,
and
Scott
Bialobreski proved to be
offensive standouts. Peed
had 7 Home Runs and 33
Runs Batted In. Mallery
came up with 5 HR and 30
RBI's. Bialobreski ended
the season with 5 HR and
29 RBI's.

Mark the Basepath
After losing many
games to the weather, the
Lady Geese Softball team
celebrated a 4-11 season.
Their record was deceiving
because it didn't reflect the
fact that the games were lost
by one or two points. The
Lady Geese had an excellent
season and gained experience for next year. The season ended with a hardfought game against Stark
County in regional action.

Lasting Impressions
Once again the Key
Club had a full year of fun
and community service.
YMCA swim meets, calendar sales, and a Kids' Night
were among the club's
many activities. In April,
some of the members attended the District Convention in Decatur. The club
was happy to have Mrs. Sue
Sagmoen as its new faculty
advisor. All the members
are looking forward to another prosperous year.

Leaders of the Students
After putting together a very successful
Homecoming, the Student
Council moved on to accomplish other tasks. Operation Cool and Mother's
Day baskets were a few of
these things. Operation
Cool was a project created
by the Illinois State Police to
promote the usage of seat
belts among teenagers. The
Student Council rewarded
students who wore their
seatbelts with free food,
grade points from teachers,
and other prizes. In the end,
Wethersfield was able to
increase their overall
seatbelt percentage. The
Student Council also purchased two new microwaves for student use in the
cafeteria. All in all, the Student Council had another
good year.

The Media Club
started the year by selling
Homecoming mums to promote school spirit. In the
fall, they volunteered their
time and effort with the elementary book fair. Also,
the Media Club designed a
web page about the school
and library. The highlight of
the year was the trip to see

Walk a Mile in My Shoes
The 1997-98 year
was a good one for the AFS
club. This year Emrah
Tekgul and Costanza
Ciccarello were welcomed to
the halls of WHS.
In December, the
AFS held a Christmas party
at which Costanza and
Emrah informed the club
about their own countries
and cultures. The club took
a trip to the Adler Theater
and saw an onstage presentation of "West Side Story."
The year was definitely a
very exciting one which provided lots of fun memories
for all.

The Tekgul Family: Emrah, Elif, Emrah's sister; Muyesser, Emrah's mother; and Munir, Emrah's father.
My name is Emrah Tekgul. I am one of the AFS students in Wethersfield High School during the 97-98
school year. I come from Adana, Turkey. Adana is the fourth biggest city in Turkey and it has a population of
about three million people.
My father's name is Munir and he is a chemist. My mother's name is Muyesser and she used to be a
chemistry teacher in a high school, but she retired during my year in Kewanee. After she retired, she opened a
book store. I have one sister, Elif. She is fifteen and she is going to the high school where I used to go.
I have stayed here with the Murray family whom I have enjoyed staying with. My host dad's name is
Michael and my host mom's name is Linda. I also have a host brother, Kerry, and a host sister, Katie.
I have really enjoyed my year here in Kewanee, even though it was pretty tough at first. After having
lived in a very big city for seventeen years, Kewanee seemed very small to me, but I got used to it.
Although I have already graduated from high school in Turkey, going to an American high school was a
great experience for me. I enjoyed playing basketball on the school team. In addition, I also went out for track
and was a member of the Key Club.

"Moonlight Masquerade." With unavoidable anxiety, the Sophomore class
eagerly awaits next year and the liberties that being upperclassmen will
bring.

Juniors Take Charge
This year the juniors enjoyed life as upperclassmen. They
started the year off by electing Sarah Oliver and Jeff Tomlinson to
be Homecoming Attendants.
They also built yet another winning Homecoming float. Most of
the year was spent planning for
prom. This year's prom theme
was "Tonight, Tonight." The juniors struggled through PS AT and
ACT, as well as other preparations for college. With three
years down, the juniors look forward to their final year at
Wethersfield.

The Real World or Bust
This was our last year at WHS.
None of us expected the time to fly by
so fast! Some of us have spent the last
thirteen years together, while others
have joined us along the way. We all
have memories that we'll never forget.
Together we've experienced wins,
losses, happiness, and heartache. Our
lives will be forever changed by WHS
and the people that touched our hearts
here. As we walk out the front doors
of WHS for the last time and close this
chapter of our lives, we are secure in
knowing that we are ready to begin the
next chapter.

Millions around the world mourned
the tragic death of Princess Diana,
who was killed Aug. 31 in Paris
during a high-speed car crash.
Diana, 36, and her companion, Dodi
Fayed, were reportedly being
chased by photographers who were
following them from the Hotel Ritz.
Fayed, along with chauffeur Henri
Paul, also died when the Mercedes
crashed in a tunnel along the
Seine River. The news sent shock
waves around the world and sparked
an international debate about the
paparazzi's role in the tragedy. An
autopsy later revealed Paul was
driving legally drunk.
Although a Cambridge, Mass., jury
found her guilty Oct. 30 of seconddegree murder in the February death
of infant Matthew Eappen, British au
pair Louise Woodward, 19, was sentenced to time served and released
by Judge Hiller Zobel. State prosecutors promised an appeal in 1998.

Project Graduation
The 1997-1998 Wethersfield Yearbook Staff has put lots of time into capturing the
essence of this school year. We have enjoyed "Leaving our Mark" in Wethersfield history.
This book contains the memories that high school is made of. We would like to thank Photo
Print for taking all of the pictures and our Walsworth representative, Kerry Hanrahan, for
instruction and assistance. A special thank you to the always patient, Mrs. Harrison, for her
constant direction and dedication.
