This year we are delighted to contrast intimate chamber
works with the full regal sound of Handel's Oratorios. In
the tercentenary year of the Hanoverian succession we
reflect on Handel's choice (so lucky for us!) of London as
his home. The Finalists from 2013 HSC give a programme
of Cantatas and we have two royal works in Deborah and
the jewel in the crown, Arianna in Creta, our annual
collaboration with the Britten International Opera School.
Selina Cadell directs, bringing her phenomenal acting
experience, coupled with her specialist skills as a director
of Restoration drama.
We are delighted also to welcome The Bach Players and
La Serenissima for the first time, and to welcome back
La Nuova Musica and Southbank Sinfonia. We also have
two oratorios, Deborah and Israel in Egypt; the winner of
the Göttingen Historical Music
Series, Ensemble Cafébaum; the
Lunchtime Series; three Fringe
concerts; seven Mayfair Organ
Concerts; five talks and four
walks, not to forget the Handel
Singing Competition – definitely
something for everyone.
We look forward to seeing you!

LONDON MUSICAL WALKS
with Janice Liverseidge
WEDNESDAY 19 MARCH
5.30pm – 6.45pm
Meet outside Holborn Tube Station, Kingsway Exit.
BLOOMSBURY PHILANTHROPISTS, INVENTORS AND ECCENTRICS
walk with Janice Liverseidge
This evening’s walk links together a number of Handel’s contemporaries who were also supporters
of the Foundling Hospital, England’s first home for abandoned children opened in 1741. Learn
about the first man in London to use an umbrella, demon drinks, a famous clockmaker, medicine
men and prison reformers. As the Foundling Museum celebrates its tenth anniversary this year it is
appropriate that we finish our walk here in time for tonight’s concert at the Foundling Museum Rupert Charlesworth and Laurence Cummings - 7pm.
MONDAY 31 MARCH
5.45pm – 6.45pm
Meet at the rear exit of John Lewis Department Store, Cavendish Square.
HANDEL MUSICAL MEANDER with Janice Liverseidge
2014 marks the 300th anniversary of the Hanoverians coming to the throne. During this walk
we will hear about Handel’s early years in London during the reign of George I and one of his
key patrons together with leading architects, designers and craftsmen of the Georgian period.
We also discover how the Fund for Decay’d Musicians and a major square were both established
before ending our walk at St George’s Church for the concert at 7pm - La Serenissima.
WEDNESDAY 9 APRIL
5.30pm – 6.45pm
Meet on the steps of St Martin-in-the-Fields Church, Trafalgar Square.
HOGARTH AND HANDEL – art, music and architecture walk with Janice Liverseidge
In tonight’s early evening stroll we learn about the artistic connections with St Martin’s Lane,
which are particularly relevant as this year is the 250th anniversary of William Hogarth’s death.
We learn about the life and times of this great artist and his links with Handel. In advance of
watching Deborah later this evening we see where this was premiered in 1733 before learning
about a Handel patron and the sartorial area of the capital. We arrive at St George’s in time for
the start of Deborah at 7pm.
THURSDAY 10 APRIL
6pm – 7.15pm
Meet outside Marble Arch Tube Station, Oxford Street North Exit.
MARTYRS, MUSICIANS AND HIDDEN MARYLEBONE walk with Janice Liverseidge
Tonight’s walk takes us from the scene of thousands of executions over hundreds of years, to
secret squares, scandalous connections, a female philanthropist and a favourite art gallery. We
end by learning about a hidden river and a Georgian department store before ending our stroll
at the Wigmore Hall - London Handel Players - 7.30pm
Tickets: £10 per walk or £8 if you come to the concert afterwards as well.
To be booked in advance.

Les Plaisirs de Versailles
This intriguing programme of French baroque music for voices,
recorders, harp, theorbo and harpsichord contrasts Charpentier's
entertaining eponymous cantata with Couperin's Lamentations
setting for the Tenebrae service. Handel was well acquainted
with the vocal works of Charpentier's teacher, Giacomo Carissimi,
and the Italian's influence can be clearly seen in this charming
French cantata.

The story, very similar to that of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, tells of Ariodante
being tricked by Polinesso into believing his betrothed Ginevra is unfaithful to him. The political
and emotional consequences give Handel the greatest scope for dazzling music and dramatic
invention, which he unerringly supplies.

FILM:
HONOUR PROFIT
AND
PLEASURE
Simon Callow stars as Handel in Channel 4’s 1985 film of Handel’s life in
London. We are delighted to be able to bring this film to the Festival. Made
on a small budget, it tells the story of his life after he moved to England in
the 1710s. The film gives some insight into his personality along with some
amusing staging of his operas. Sadly, director Anna Ambrose died soon after
this film was completed. This film is being shown by permission of the British Film Institute.
The Cast: Simon Callow, Alan Devlin, TP McKenna, Jean Rigby and James Villiers.

MUSICIANS
OF
LONDON WALL
THE GHOST IN THE MACHINE
Mechanical Instruments give us a unique insight into the repertoire and style of playing popular in
eighteenth-century England. Instruments such as barrel organs and organ clocks survive, which
perform perfectly and provide us essentially with a 'recording' of how this music was heard at the
time they were made. Often this can be a challenge to our received idea of how music should
sound but it is hugely exciting to know that we are hearing something heard and approved by
even Handel himself!
This concert showcases music found in mechanical sources by GF Handel, Arne, Shield and also
popular folk songs and dances performed by the always exuberant and highly accomplished
period performers of The Musicians of London Wall.

HANDEL HOUSE
MUSEUM and the
LONDON HANDEL
FESTIVAL
The London Handel Festival work together
with the Handel House Museum on two
projects every year:
LONDON HANDEL FESTIVAL OPERA PROJECT
The Festival and Handel House will work with
one school to experience Handel’s operas and
to create their own based on the festival’s
performance of Arianna in Creta. The school
will visit the museum and attend a rehearsal
of the opera at the Britten Theatre to develop
their understanding of Handel’s life and works.
and London Handel Festival
websites at a later date.
ANNUAL CONCERT
FOR SCHOOLS
Handel House Museum invites
primary and secondary schools
to a free concert with the
London Handel Players. It will give many
children their first introduction to Baroque
music, and musicians from the LHP will guide
them on a fun and engaging journey exploring
their historical instruments.
The concert will take place at Grosvenor
Chapel on Tuesday 4 March 2014.
If you would like to book your school to this
event, please contact Claire Davies on
020 7399 1952 or email
[email protected]
This project will provide a taster of the
workings of an opera from composing, staging
and performing. It will also encourage students
to participate in their own mini opera which
will be written in collaboration with the
museum’s Composer-in-Residence.
A film of the students’ performance will be
available on the Handel House Museum
