You can SPONSOR A DAY at Rancho Mirage Public Library!
Welcome to the Rancho Mirage Public Library…
Summer, with lofty temperatures, means a change of pace in the desert. Languid
days, as you know, make Library visits a must.
Much, but certainly not all, of our programming will focus on the Children’s Summer
Reading Club (SRC) and all of its events, outlined in detail in this issue of our awardwinning Guide.
The theme this year is “Read for the Win!” which aligns with the 2016 Summer
Olympics in Brazil and most important, celebrates the Library’s 20th Anniversary.
The SRC keeps kids busy, Monday – Friday, every week from June 20th through August
12th. The full schedule appears on pages 14 – 16 of this program guide. Everyone can
participate since there are four age group categories spanning infant years to adult.
For general audiences, especially film fans, the Library will screen a summer-long
series of documentaries on Mondays. Docu-Mondays is a tribute to the Desert’s late
documentarian, Joel Hochberg, and just like Joel, these films cover a wide range of
interesting (and surprising) topics.
Plus, we have these three big events for you:
• Saturday, July 30th 10 PM – midnight: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Midnight
Release Party. Our Community Room will become Hogwarts Great Hall, and there
will be games, crafts, snacks and more!
• Saturday, September 10th 2 – 3:30 PM: Jim Borax’s California Cabaret is back in
concert with the Great American Songbook.
• Wednesday, September 21st 7 – 8:00 PM: Bobby Jo Valentine returns with new
songs in this special evening concert.
Sizzling Summer days are a good time to take advantage of reading e-books and
e-magazines on our website, ranchomiragelibrary.org, which you can do from your
home computer or personal device.
David Bryant, Library Director
Note: Any changes to this schedule, including additional programs, will be announced on our website: ranchomiragelibrary.org
If you would like to receive e-mail alerts about upcoming events, changes in our programming schedule, or events not shown
here, please send your e-mail address to [email protected].
People with disabilities are encouraged to attend Library programs. If you have special communication or access needs, please
contact the Library at (760) 341-7323 four business days in advance of the event(s) you will attend.

Walking with the Stars
If walking is part of your regular exercise routine, there is no need to
abandon it during the hot months. The Community Room at the Rancho
Mirage Public Library is open with a walking track, 9 AM – 2 PM through
October. The Community Room is air-conditioned and carpeted for a “soft”
track at 71-100 Hwy 111, Rancho Mirage. Feet and joints will appreciate a
carpeted floor that is much softer than pavement or concrete.
The Library’s Community Room has ample open
space for walking tracks plus a great sound system.
The Library offers varying musical selections while walkers make laps.
Any pace works in the Community Room — brisk to leisurely — with each
lap 1/25th of a mile. “For those who count, a very average pace of 3 miles
per hour will yield a mile on carpet in just 20 minutes,” says David Bryant,
Library Director. It is possible to encounter a local celebrity or cross paths
with an elected official along the way. Strike up a conversation, make new
friends and get some exercise, all without breaking a sweat!
The Library welcomes people with mobility issues, using canes,
walkers, wheelchairs or receiving a helping hand from their
caregivers and service dogs. This program is for everyone and
comfortable shoes/sneakers are the only equipment needed.

The Rancho Mirage Public Library Foundation was established in 2010 as the
fundraising arm of your Library. Gifts to the Foundation support programs for all ages,
the purchase of books and media, or the Children’s Summer Reading Club. Please
consider a tax deductible contribution to support your Library.
Library Tribute Cards
Available at The Book Nook
The Rancho Mirage Public Library
Foundation is pleased to offer tribute
cards with a beautiful image of the
Library. These elegant cards recently
received Best of Show at the PR
Xchange Competition from the
American Library Association in the
Fundraising Materials/Print category.
They are perfect for sending a friend
a thank you, for honoring the memory
of a family member or colleague, or
for acknowledging a special moment.
The cards are packaged in special
decorative bags, with five cards priced
at $20. The cards are available in the
Library Foundation Book Store — The
Book Nook — during Library hours.

Donor Roll of Honor
Take a moment and peruse
the Library’s newly designed
DONOR ROLL OF HONOR
on the wall near the west entrance.
From 2003 to the present, people
identified on this wall made gifts to
the Library that went beyond City
funding to make a great institution
even more special.
The Donor Wall of Honor includes the
names of all who have made gifts of
$2,000 (cumulatively) and ranging
beyond $250,000.

CREATE YOUR
Literary Legacy
Each day, over 1,000 of your neighbors visit and enjoy the Rancho Mirage Public
Library. Our Library is one of California’s busiest and most popular.
With the LITERARY LEGACY program, the Library Foundation recognizes
that you may want the opportunity to make a lasting gift by giving your name or a
loved one’s name a permanent place in this outstanding Library. You may choose
to name a book, a favorite subject area, a program or series, Library seating, a
Library space, or even a room.
Please contact Library Director David Bryant at 760-341-7323, ext. 700 with
any questions about the Foundation’s LITERARY LEGACY program. The
Foundation is excited about new naming opportunities for your Library that have
emerged from the LIbrary’s space planning initiative.
Your LITERARY LEGACY awaits you at the best Library in Southern
California, one of the best in the state and in America.
Thank you,

Come to the Cabaret
Bobby Jo Valentine
Saturday, September 10, 2 – 3 p.m.
Wednesday, September 21,
7 – 8 p.m.
What good is sitting alone in your
room when you can come to Jim
Borax’s California Cabaret? This
multi-faceted show includes a
swingin’ sing-along of unforgettable
standards and a variety of exciting
performances by professional
singers and dancers.
Enjoy
such
performers
as:
Mary Ann Hermansen who has
appeared in the hit show “Cabaret”
on Broadway; Melissa Batallés
who is a two-time winner of the
McCallum Theater’s “Open Call”;
Terri Olsen, a P.S. Follies singer
and dancer; and Palmer Davis,
a Radio City Rockette. Music
will range from “Great American
Songbook” selections to opera. So
come to the Cabaret!
Bobby Jo Valentine is a singer/
songwriter who chases after this
particular kind of music. The
authentic, universal, uncanny
nature of his songs have won him
Songwriter of the Year at West
Coast Songwriter’s Association
twice — in 2011 and 2015. His
new album Fox Eyes, Whale Heart
is his most soulful, poetic work to
date, and he’ll be sharing stories
and songs from that release during
this performance.
Don’t miss a special evening of
poetry and music from this highly
regarded new singer/songwriter.
