appy New Year to you and your family from the
2014 SWYC Board of Directors. We have many
fun events and activities planned for the coming
year and we are well situated to enjoy them, thanks to
the superb leadership of Jr. Staff Commodore Chris
O’Brien this past year. Our club was well served by his
steady hand at the helm. We practiced fiscal responsibility
and follow with our

April 12th. We will finish out the weekend with the Dock
Decorating contest on Sunday, April 13th. Mark your
calendars now for a really fun-filled weekend!

to buoy racing. The winners of this series are truly talented

year – April 12th. Like most area clubs, we shifted to
earlier dates to avoid conflict with the Easter holiday as
well as several big sail races. We will hold our traditional
Closing Night dinner and ceremony on Friday, April 11th

mettle, encourage them to sign up and compete.

I
s it really 2014 already? Where
did 2013 go? I guess time
really does fly when you’re
busy and, boy, was 2013 a productive year for SWYC.
And, after the last Master Plan meeting, I suspect 2014 will
be equally as busy. Your 2013 Master Plan Committee,
under the expert guidance of Chairperson David Bond
and Board liaison V/C Chris Brzezinski, worked very
hard laying the groundwork for a number of important
upcoming projects for the Club. Some of these
projects, like the issue of dredging, will potentially involve
smaller scale maintenance dredging. This will be coupled
with continued development of a comprehensive plan to
resolve the problem. (Oh, if there were only some way to
wave a magic wand and make the sand migrate
somewhere other than under our hoist and small dock
area.) One plan brought to you by the committee has
already seen fruition. Our playground is up and running
and I know there are a number of our kids ready to get
out there and give it a test drive! Another project the

A
s we bring in another new
year, I would like to thank
you for your confidence and
the many congratulations that I have
received in regards to this new
position. I am honored to move into
the role of R/C. Over the past
decade plus, this Club (which really
is just a culmination of all of you) has become a part of
my family and soul; giving back seems the most logical
thing I could do. I am looking forward to spending time
with the Membership Committee again, having served on
that committee for five years, and getting to know
everyone on the Community Relations Committee. I am
confident that we are going to have a productive year,
although filling the shoes of V/C Mary Haller is going to
be tough. She and the membership committee brought in
the largest number of new members that I can remember
in a single year. My challenge to all of you is to help us
continue on this path and to exceed the new member
numbers from 2013 in this exciting new year of 2014. The
best source of new members is the existing membership,
so think about your friends who would benefit from
membership at “the friendliest yacht club” and become
their sponsors.
There are a few new members that I would like to introduce
you to:
Jim and Sue Wise join our Southwestern family as regular
members. Jim and Sue grew up in the midwest and have
now lived in the San Diego area for 28 years. From an
early age, Jim developed a passion for fishing and boating
on the river in his hometown in Wisconsin. Sue grew up
in Chicago sailing aboard her family’s 26’ sailboat on Lake
Michigan as well as actively participating on her college’s
rowing team. Currently they don’t own a boat, but they are
actively looking for just the right boat to satisfy their desire
to get back into boating. Jim has his own law practice and
Sue, having worked as a teacher and counselor for 35
years, has recently retired from the Poway Unified School
District. They have two grown children and a five-year-old
grandson who all live locally. Both Jim and Sue have been
very active in civic, social and church activities, and look
forward to becoming involved in the Anglers as well as the
Decorating Committee.
Joining us as Sea Trial Participants are Steven and Susan
Knapp. Steven is a native San Diegan and has been on or
around the water his entire life. Steven grew up fishing,
water skiing and house boating with his family. He is
passionate about fishing and owns a 21’ Parker as well as
a 41’ Hershine trawler. Steven is also an active volunteer
at the San Diego Maritime Museum, serving as a core
member of the Star of India’s Sailing crew, where he is the
Main Mast Fife Rail Captain. Steven is a Human Resource
Manager with the San Diego Unified Port District and
Susan is a psychologist with the Ramona School District,
but is currently at home with their five-year-old daughter,
Sophia. Sophia just began Kindergarten and, in addition
to loving ballet, she also enjoys spending time on the
water with her family.
Please join me in ensuring these new members become a
part of our family.

group for the first time in

Don Freeman. I look forward to
meeting and working with the other Dockmasters, Ian
Trotter, Nick Caldwell, Allan & Khris Hobbs, Dave
Sheldon, Frank Taliaferro, Phil & Cindy Hoffman, Roy
Knoch & Dianne Langefeld, Bob & Nancy Myernick,
David Thompson and Jeff Spangler over this next year.
The Dockmasters meet the 1st Monday of each month.
Everyone is welcome to attend, contribute and meet this
fine group.
Russ Cornelius, Kara Masters and Mariah Santos
have been extremely helpful in my orientation as the
new incoming Port Captain. Thank you all very much! I
also have to thank Bob Soderberg for being a mind
reader. Issues brought up by the Dock Masters the night
before were already underway before I asked. (How
does he do that?)
Goals for the next year:
• FILL SLIPS!....Several changes in procedures such as
allowing small boats, dinghy or water toys into 24’
slips and only pay the cost for the length of the item!
In addition to new membership incentives, several
other creative and innovative suggestions have been
put forward to fill 30' slips. I would welcome any and
all ideas you might have!

• Wait list visibility: There has been a lot of activity
assigning slips the past couple of weeks. One issue is
that sometimes people on the list don't have a
qualifying boat and drop to the bottom of the list. In
an effort to make sure your boat qualifies for that list,
get a "Certificate of Measurement" on file with the
office. Please contact me directly or the office to
schedule measuring your boat. If you have not
purchased a new boat yet, you might want to
consider moving to the inactive list to preserve your
priority date until just prior to closing the transaction.
• Exchange list: Check to see if both the Length AND
WIDTH will work for your boat! I will do my best to
place narrow boats next to wide boats but many in
the slip already have a wide boat. If your boat is over
1/2 of the double slip width, you might have to wait
a very long time!
• Safety: One of my big hot buttons! We are here to
have FUN and nobody should ever get hurt! If you
see anything, anyone, anytime let the office know,
fill out an incident report or call me. The club has
some of the finest emergency equipment, first
responders and procedures of any marina. Reviewing
the incident reports, I notice several people have
fallen off the dock. Does everyone know about the
ladders? If not ask your Dockmaster or the office,
and we will show you where they are and how to
use them. Luckily we had no recent dewatering
reports, but do you know where the emergency
pumps are? Let's all get hands-on familiarity with our
emergency procedures here at SWYC.

pleasure. And throughout the year we hosted 11
themed events. My team was very, very busy!!
We are easing into 2014 with an Elvis Presley Tribute
band, GRACELAND www.gracelandsandiego.com
on Friday January 31st 7:00-10:00 pm.
Save the date and enjoy a “Jazzy Evening” on
Valentine’s Day, Friday, February 14th, with
the band “Lower Left,” a San Diego jazz band
trio. Dinner specials will be created by our own
Chef Danny.

committee has been hard at work on, the Annex
renovation, is something the committee and the Board
look forward to bringing before the membership in early
spring. This building was built back in the 70’s and it has
served SWYC dutifully over the years. Despite the
herculean efforts of Facilities Director, Bob Soderberg and
his exceptional staff, to keep the building maintained and
in working order, we are now faced with a building that
needs serious attention. The Board and Committee want to
be clear, this is not simply a cosmetic overhaul; this is a
plan to fix structural issues, including the roof, the
plumbing and termite damage as well as the dreaded dry
rot damage (termites and dry rot, I’m sure every
homeowner reading this just shuddered). In addition, the
committee has incorporated into the plan an expansion of

space for our growing and successful Juniors Program. A
series of Townhall meetings are being planned to help
answer any questions our membership may have.
On a personal note, as a new member I spent five years
on the Master Plan Committee and three on the House
Committee, all while we were getting ready for and then
going through our Clubhouse renovation. While I’ve never
served on our Historical Committee, I already have a
number of wonderful friends who serve on this committee
that is so essential in the preservation of our Club’s history.
I am so excited to act as the Board’s representative to
these three fantastic committees, it’s a little like coming full
circle, and I really look forward to seeing what the year
holds for us all.

Competition Committee

T
he International 14 World Championships were
recently held by the Royal Canadian Yacht Club
(RCYC) on Lake Ontario. Almost 70 boats were
entered into the Championship, including 13 from the
USA of which 3 were from the San Diego area including
Southwestern YC’s Terry Gleeson on his boat Morningstar.
Terry Gleeson and SWYC’s Bryan Buffaloe built a racing
program to lead up to this event, including rigging a new
boat and a lot of time and practice. Unfortunately, Bryan’s
work commitments pulled him away for this event so
Evan Sjostedt, from Richmond Yacht Club, joined up with
Terry for the Worlds coming in directly off his Youth
America’s Cup appearance in San Francisco.
The International 14 Class is the oldest recognized dinghy
class in the world but also one of the most advanced. The
class is a development class, in which the rules have been
altered over the years to promote and foster new
developments. While the boats of 40 years ago looked
like smaller versions of Thistles, the boats today are all
carbon fiber, with 25 foot masts, 9 foot bow sprits, twin
trapezes, with hydrofoil rudders and only weighing in at
150 lb’s. Very rare to have a modern sailing class that is
so advanced yet still has over a 100 year history. This
history is evident at RCYC where I-14’s have been actively
sailed out of the club since the 1930’s, half models and
trophies are on display in prominent places throughout
this historic club.
The regatta was held over 8 days of which only 5 total
races were scored due to a 3-4 day high pressure system
that shut the wind down during the middle of the regatta.
Race 1 was started in light SW breeze with clear skies.
The fleet was anxious to get away from the line and had
2 general recalls, on the 3rd start the RC brought out the
black flag which still did not deter the fleet and an
additional general occurred. On the 4th start we finally got
away, however 6 boats had been caught during the 2
black flags and had to carry there OCS scores throughout
the series.
The 2nd days race began in a light breeze held with close
to 2 mile legs. The RC miraculously started this very
aggressive fleet with no recalls for the rest of the week.
The race course did become a bit one sided with the
breeze settling in on the left and was shortened due to a
dying breeze.
Day 3 started clean with a shifty 10 knot breeze and 2 ft
swell. There were quite a few lead changes at the top,
and a solid pack of boats just behind the leaders. The I14 Worlds races are typically long and contain multiple
reaching legs, the reaches keep the boats in check that

take full advantage of the unlimited kite size rule the
class has.
The fourth race was shortened and barely finished with
the breeze dying out. Even in this light breeze, these fast
boats are going upwind at 6-8 knots and downwind at 912. However, this makes being in the breeze an absolute
premium and again the course seemed one-sided which
narrowed the passing lanes.
The 14 class is known for fast boats and also for big
parties. Every night there were big events happening
around the islands that RCYC sits on… this includes the
rock band, ‘Hoist!’, made up of different international
competitors putting on quite a show, the Brits creating all
sorts of games and skits on presentation nights, the
Japanese 14 sailors lighting parts of themselves on fire,
and the Aussie’s and Germans doing what they normally
do. Good times indeed and the members of RCYC were
very hospitable as the14 Worlds are different from the
typical international or Olympic class regatta! That being
said the boats themselves are very physical with a steep
learning curve, but the speed, exhilaration, class
camaraderie and history are difficult to match.
After having 3 frustrating non-sailing days in the middle of
the regatta, the event finished with a delayed, cold and
rainy final day, followed by a rush to pack the boats onto
trailers and in containers. Terry and Evan were pleased to
represent Southwestern and finished 24th. They had a
couple of tough races, battled back never finishing in the
bottom half and showed some significant speed
advantages when the breeze came up, but that didn’t help
in a very light air regatta.
The regatta was won by Archie Massey and Dan Wilson
from Great Britain. This is Archie’s 4th consecutive Worlds
title, and Dan’s 3rd. The top 6 spots were all British boats
showing incredible light air technique. The top US boat
was 10th, Joe Bersch and Chris Lanzinger from Seattle.
The regatta had quite a few female sailors throughout the
fleet and the ages of the competitors spanned from 15 to
a few in their 60’s who won’t stop as goes the fleet
saying, ‘14’s are Forever’.

are looking forward to a big year of 14 sailing out of
Southwestern and building a campaign to go after the
World Championship in January 2015 in Geelong,
Australlia.

N
ovember 16th our last event of the year, Harbor
4/4, brought out ten skippers to run the
12.128nm course. The predicted drizzle did not
appear but the skies were cloudy with an occasional ray
of sunshine to brighten the vista. The start was at CB 20
with a lat/lon route point, followed by Mark I at CB 22
where the racers were allowed to use a stop watch to
calculate their actual speed to route point CB 24. With
stopwatches stowed away and throttles adjusted, the
racers proceeded to Mark II, directly between Bridge
Pier 18 and 19. A long leg to route point CB 28 and a
360 degree turn at a lat/lon, thence to Mark III, another
lat/lon. Next, a turn to port to get to route point CB 30,
another lat/lon for Mark IV and the long trek back into
the North Bay. A lat/lon Mark V off of the Cruise Ship
Terminal, followed by a long leg towards America’s Cup
harbor for a route point and a turn to port for the finish
at CB 18. At the conclusion of the contest, the
participants rendezvoused at San Diego Yacht Club for
a Mexican-themed lunch and the contest results.
Finishing in third place was Ed Denaci aboard
Microship II with a tally of 1.1694. Right behind Ed was
your scribe navigating Ancora in with a count of
1.3793. In sixth place was Jim Lonergan steering Casa
Del Perro Tres with a percentage error of 1.9163. In
tenth place we have Mike Fontaine steering Tuffy in
with a score of 5.0036.

keeping all the boat ratings in line and your vast
experience with just about every aspect of Sail Fleet.
Thank you, Dave Baer, for another year of keeping the
protest hearings to a minimum. Thank you, Karl
Simonsen, for stepping in as Membership Chair. Thank
you, Jeff Woods, for your blow-out year of great Sail Fleet
Presentations. Big thanks to Don Stouder for his steadfast
guidance of Race Committee. Thanks to Judd Lather for
getting our SI’s and NOR’s out throughout the year.
Looking into 2014 I want to wish Brad Alberts well as he
leads the Sail Fleet Board into a year that is already
starting with some major changes. The Cabrillo Ocean
Series will be almost completely re-written thanks to the
stepped up visa issues with Mexico. I’m very excited about
the new courses and I believe the racers will enjoy the
change.

Holidays to my fellow anglers. As new Anglers board president, I
want to thank Lynn for two great years as board president. I am
hoping for great fishing 2014, as well as continued success with
our White Seabass program and charity Bottom Fishing
Tournament. For new and old members, I ask that you help with
all the events of the coming year, the first of which is the Anglers
mixer on Jan. 24th. Hope you can attend. I will be fishing - hoping
for a 200+ pound tuna. Wish me luck!

Donna, our perennial chairperson for our Mixers, says the theme

Bernie Jeffe caught a blue marlin solo recently in Baja. This feat
has been on his bucket list for the last 30 years! The estimated
weight was 140#. Congrats to Bernie, who now belongs to an
exclusive club here at
