Area Chamber of Commerce website
www.manhattanchamber.org.

word in their name, address, business type, etc. Additional words that direct a

A publication of the Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau
100 years and still going strong!
100 years of basketball is something to celebrate! 2A State Basketball Championships
have been held in Manhattan for 22 years. The 2011 Championship at Bramlage
Coliseum was another huge success for Manhattan! Well over 15,000 people
entered the gates to watch their favorite high school team compete at the
game that makes March… Madness. On Saturday, just before the championship games, 26 schools with 372 men and 22 schools with 365 women
took the floor, representing their past championships and honored once
again by the Kansas State High School Activities Associations for the
100th year celebration.
The Manhattan Convention & Visitor Bureau couldn’t pull off this event without
numerous volunteers and donations from business in this great community. We’d like to thank each and every one
of you for making 2A a great success.
The fishing is good
By Todd Lovin
Fall fish surveys were completed
and the data has been analyzed.
Now is a great time to be sitting
on the bank of a favorite fishing
spot or spending some time in
the boat. The upcoming year will
provide some exciting fishing
opportunities for anglers at Tuttle
Creek Lake. The last few years
due to unstable water conditions,
fishing results were down, but fish
populations are recovering. The
last preparation to do before actually hitting the water is to consult
fishing reports to make your time
on the water more productive.
The Kansas Department of
Wildlife and Parks website,
www.kdwp.state.ks.us contains
crucial information for the angler.
At the KDWP website, click on
fishing at the top, then on the left
click on fishing forecast. At this
site you will find fishing forecasts
for all species at all bodies of
water including Tuttle Creek Lake.
In a nutshell for Tuttle Creek
Lake in 2011, fishing for catfish
will again be good with good size
and numbers being available.
White bass and Crappie numbers
are not quite at target levels, but
anglers will have the opportunity
to catch some large fish. Saugeye
fishing will improve in 2011 compared to the last few years. Saugeye will still be a little small, but
the numbers are increasing. If
you wish to have current fishing
reports the KDWP website is also
a great place to consult. Instead
of clicking on fishing forecasts,
click on fishing reports, Region 2
which covers Northeast Kansas.
The information at this site is
provided by KDWP fisheries
biologists. If you click on fishing
reports you can also click on Public Fishing Reports. From here
click on Region 2 “Dock Squawk”.
Dock Squawk is a site that anglers
can ask about their favorite fishing hole or share recent fishing
success stories. For computer
challenged folks, local bait shops
or the local KDWP office can also
give you some good fishing information. For more fishing information, contact the Tuttle Creek
State Park office at 785-539-7941.
Office hours are Monday through
Friday 8am to 4:30pm.

Flint Hills Discovery Center Bicentennial
Time Capsule Project
During 2011 the State of Kansas
celebrates our Sesquicentennial.
Another celebration will also take
place during 2011, as this is the
final year of construction for the
Flint Hills Discovery Center in
downtown Manhattan. The Flint
Hills Discovery Center is an interactive science and history learning
center intended to educate and
inspire visitors of all ages of the
importance of our rare and fragile
Tallgrass prairie eco-system. This
year of celebrations and reflection
provides us with a unique opportunity for the Flint Hills region to capture our way of life today and to
showcase it for future generations.
To mark the 150th anniversary of
the state, and to commemorate the
founding of the Flint Hills Discovery
Center, a region-wide, 50-year time
capsule project is being launched.
Every county that makes up the
Flint Hills region is invited to
become a part of the Flint Hills
Discovery Center by collection
aspects and expression of their
communities lives. Each county
will be given an archival box and
material to safely store the
collected items.
For more information on this
project, contact Bob Workman
at 785-587-2726 or

CVB assists events in the Manhattan area
The Manhattan Convention &
Visitors Bureau announces four
events which are the recipients of
the 2011 Marketing Grant Program.
This grant program is designed to
enhance marketing efforts of
tourism oriented attractions/events
by leveraging community funds with
Manhattan Convention & Visitors
Bureau monies to assist in creating
marketing materials and/or
advertising.
To be eligible for these grants, the
organization representing the
Manhattan area has to be actively
involved in marketing Manhattan
and the area to leisure tourists
outside the primary trade area.
Projects primary function must be
aimed towards marketing to out-ofcounty travelers and designed to
stimulate economic growth and/or
enhance future tourism development activities to visitors who will
stay over night in local hotels,
hence generating transient guest
tax.

Job Fair
On March 8, Myranda trekked to
Salina for the Kansas Statewide
Career Fair. At the 4-hour event,
many job seekers visited the
Manhattan Area Chamber of
Commerce table and received job
lists of the openings in Manhattan (www.nationjob.com/manhattan). Of the job seekers,
several were K-State alumni or
had Fort Riley ties. At the end of
the event, Myranda had gathered
38 resumes. From those,
resumes are sent to chamber
members in whose fields the job
seekers are interested. In
addition, the job seekers are
e-mailed every two weeks with
listings from the job website
based on the type of job they’re
interested in. It is a time-consuming process, but helping people
find employment is worth it!
