SYNOPSIS
“Legends of Madagascar” takes on numerous issues in contemporary Madagascar: racial
tensions between the native population and Indian immigrants, military corruption, and the
challenge to preserve indigenous traditions amidst economic growth. Jimi, a young man
studying in the capital must return home to his village when he learns (via radio
announcement) that his father is deathly ill. The hero and his Rastafarian friend Bob
scrounge up the money to buy a bus ticket home. They fail to raise enough, but fortunately
their gangster friend Dylan needs to skip town and offers them a ride. Signs of political strife
are everywhere, as are military checkpoints. Yet they encounter a spirit of camaraderie
everywhere they go.
DIRESTOR’S SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Haminiaina Ratovoarivony (Hamy Ratovo) is a filmmaker from Madagascar who battles to
revive the Malagasy cinema. When he was a kid, Hamy found a 8mm movie camera in his
dad's belongings. When he asked what it was, his dad told him what it was for: a tool to
share ideas with others and to transform the society through images and stories. After
receiving a B.A. in Sociology, he moved to France to study Cinema. By combining his
knowledge of social sciences and his love for images, he is able to reflect social problems not
only in Madagascar, but in Africa in general. “Legends of Madagascar” is his first film.

PRESS EXTRACTS
CHICAGO TRIBUNE
African themes power Facets Festival by Michael Phillips
The road-tripping "Legends of Madagascar" is about a journey home, not away. It's also a
spirited fable of what a sociology degree might do in the hands of the right young Malagasy
students.
CHICAGO READER
A “Living newspaper” from Madagascar by Ben Sachs
As Jonathan Rosenbaum wrote of Spike Lee's Jungle Fever, Madagascar is "a kind of 'living
newspaper' where front-page stories exist in proximity to one another without necessarily
linking up, and where it's left to the audience to make some of the vital connections." And like
much of Lee's work, it's lively and impassioned stuff—too entertaining to come off as a
screed.
RTB – RADIO TELEVISION BURKINABE
