Tutor Directory
Parents are often seeking special assistance to help their children improve their
grades. To assist, Teen Services is compiling a Tutor Directory to provide parents
with a list of tutors, their subject specialties and credentials.
If you are a qualified tutor and would like to be included in the directory, you
will need to submit a tutor information form to Lynn Maaiki, the Young Adult
Librarian. Forms are available at the library or may be downloaded from our
website. Please note that being included in our directory does not imply a Library
recommendation. Parents must evaluate each tutor themselves. Tutors are
encouraged to include a resume and references.

Bev’s Book Beat
A good book should leave you . . . slightly
exhausted at the end. You live several lives while
reading it. –William Styron
Hooray! March is here and with it comes
the promise of some warmer weather . . .
though the cold snowy weather was great for
cozying up with a good book.
When one of my favorite authors comes
out with a new book, I get excited. Here are a
few that I am looking forward to:
Alex Berenson introduced us to his main
character, John Wells in The Faithful Spy,
then followed up with The
Ghost War. Here we get to go
on another thriller ride with his
new one, The Silent Man. What
Wells needs to find out is who
has the highly enriched uranium
that the Russians lost. Let’s remember that
Wells likes to devote his time to fighting evil
and keeping America safe . . . and he does it
well. As long as I know that there are people
like John Wells keeping me safe, I sleep better
at night.
Robert B. Parker brings back
Jesse Stone in Night and Day. I
know that some think Parker
just calls it in, but you know
when you start a Parker you will
be finished in a day or two – he’s
your light snack when you want something
easy and fast to read.
David Baldacci brings back
Sean King and Michelle Maxwell
from Simple Genius in his new
one, First Family. Years ago,
when the President was a senator,
King saved his life. Now the first
family needs his help again, which begs the
question, will secrets from the past come out
in the future?
With Care, she demonstrates why. Every parent
wants a healthy, perfect child but what happens
when your child isn’t perfect or even healthy?
With her usual poignancy, Picoult takes us into
the heart of a family that gives us insight into
how each one deals with the drama.
Michael Connelly brings back newsman
Jack McEvoy in his new one, The
Scarecrow. McEvoy was in Connelly’s first
book, The Poet (one of my all
time favorite books). With the
newspaper’s budget cuts,
McEvoy is losing his job so he
decides to go out on top. The
killer he is tracking has always
been one step ahead of whoever
makes a move against him . . . so who’s
tracking who?
FYI: An interesting new way to read books
is making an appearance. Graphic novels for
adults have been coming into their own in
recent years. A graphic novel is a type of comic
book with a complex story line but they have
pictures in them to move the story line along.
While they have been around for years, more
people have discovered them and they are
making a niche for themselves. Let me know
what you think about graphic novels – would
you like the Library to establish a collection?
Great news! The library has purchased an
Amazon Kindle. The Kindle supports books,
magazines and newspapers. Stop by my desk
and I will explain how to use it. The Kindle
can be checked out for a month and the
Library will download material for you to
read, free of charge. Come on by and see what
it’s all about.

There are so many popular authors who
have new books coming out this spring!

Clive Cussler – Corsair
Lee Child – Gone Tomorrow
(Jack Reacher #13)
John Sandford – Wicked Prey
Danielle Steel – One Day at a Time
Brad Thor – Apostle
Peter Robinson – All the Colors of
Darkness
Lincoln Child – Terminal Freeze

Library Receives Grant
The Library recently received a grant, thanks to the
efforts of Senator Ken LaValle, for $6,500 for the
purchase of a digital microfilm reader/printer.
The new machine gives staff members and patrons
the ability to digitize microfilmed records and instantly
e-mail them to anyone anywhere.
The Library was given the complete archives of
The Suffolk Times, on microfilm 10 years ago. Since
that time, microfilm from the Long Island Traveler
has been added to the collection. The Library was also
given the archival records of the Mattituck Presbyterian Church, some of
which date back to the early 1800's. The Library is able to offer access to
these rich resources, thanks in large part to this grant.
The microfilm archives and new reader are available for use during
Library hours.

Sunday, April 26th 4:00 p.m.
Concert will be held at the Mattituck Presbyterian Church
Free of charge, all welcome!
Organized in 1994, the Recorder
Orchestra of New York performs on Long
Island, New York City, Connecticut and in
July of 2001 completed a highly successful
tour of England. Orchestra members,
including several musicians from our own
North Fork, play instruments ranging from
the smallest recorder – the six-inch
garklein, to the very large seven-foot
contrabass. The rich, sweet sound of the
instruments is adaptable to a wide musical
repertoire from Renaissance and Baroque
periods through contemporary music.
The concert is being held at the
Mattituck Presbyterian Church because of
the acoustic quality the Church sanctuary
has to offer. Refreshments will be served
following the concert. All are welcome to
this unique and outstanding performance.
