Celebrating 27 years of hot air, 7 years of getting your wine & food passports validated, and 5 years of
great music and award-winning regional brews, the 2012 ColorFest Weekend is just around the corner. We
made it through an early dry summer and a potentially dangerous fire situation and yet the river is still hosting
thousands of floaters; the Colorado Rocky Mountain Bike Tour will be here August 4 th, 5th and 11th, the rains
have greened up our area and life is good! This year, the Chamber will be undertaking producing not only the
Passport to Pagosa Wine & Food Festival and the Bands, Brews, etc. Blowout, but we will also be working on
the Hot Air Balloon Rally.
The 27th annual Reach for the Peaks ColorFest Weekend will be held September 7 th thru the
9th. In addition, wine dinners are being planned for Thursday, September 6 th at various restaurants around town.
These locations will be announced soon. The party begins on Friday, September 7 th with the annual Passport to
Pagosa. Numerous Pagosa restaurants and caterers will be on hand to showcase their fantastic creations and
show residents and visitors alike the variety and sumptuous food Pagosa has to offer. The restaurants will also
be vying for some awards such as Most Original, Best Sweet, and People’s Choice. In addition to delicious
food, there will be flavorful wines. Typically we choose several different countries to represent at our festival.
We look at what wines are “popular” and what countries are “hot”. There is a wide variety of choices and
wines to help you think “out of your box – or bottle” in this case! Varieties run the price gamut and we try to
find wines that our local or regional liquor stores will carry so that you can add these wines to your repertoire.
Add some music by Pagosa’s talented Bob Hemmenger and you will have a fantastic evening. Tickets are $40
in advance and $45 at the door.
On Saturday, September 8th the Bands, Brews, etc. music and microbrew festival will take place.
Again this year beginning at noon we will host the Kiddee Karaoke contest. Get that child music star out and
singing from 12-2 p.m. We will have prizes for the children and a huge array of songs to choose from. Then
beginning at 3 p.m., the adult music starts, the feet get to dancing and the beer aficionados come out to taste
regional beers from over a dozen microbreweries. We will again present the People’s Choice award for the
favorite beer. There will also be food vendors available and the music of several regionally-known bands will
continue until dusk and the Balloon Glow. The Balloon Glow will take place starting at approximately
7:15 p.m. as the pilots begin to inflate their balloons. At this time they will be using the downtown athletic
field. The Glow can be seen from Hot Springs Blvd. and Hwy 160; however, please be careful that you are not
blocking traffic or creating a hazard as you watch this spectacular event. Tickets for the Bands, Brews, etc.
event are $20 for the beer tasting and admission and just $5 if you just want to come and listen to the music.
Wine and non-alcoholic beverages by the glass will also be available.
On Saturday and Sunday mornings, September 8 th and 9th the colorful hot air balloons take to the skies.
On Saturday morning, the mass ascension will take place from the downtown area.
The pilots will meet in the tent in Town Park at approximately 7 a.m. If you are
interested in crewing for a balloon, please be at the tent at 7 a.m. and sign up. You
must know the area and streets well in order to crew. Later in the morning, the
pilots will compete at a precision toss game with prizes to be awarded. Then on
Sunday, September 9th the balloons will launch from the west side of town. Due
to the residential growth of the west side, there is no actual launch site. Returning
balloons have their favorite spot near the Wyndham area, off of N. Pagosa Blvd.,
and various points in between. Whether downtown or on the west side, Pagosa
Springs and balloons offer some of the most picturesque photographic opportunities with our lakes, river, mountain and town back-drops. This weekend has
something for everyone with lots of oohs and aahs attached! Tickets for all the
events are available online at www.pagosaspringschamber.com or at the Chamber
of Commerce. We look forward to another colorful, magical ColorFest weekend.

COLORFEST: WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL & BANDS, BREWS, ETC.
Almost as quickly as summer arrives, it seems as though it is on its way out again. Welcome to Autumn in
Pagosa Springs.
September brings with it our annual ColorFest Celebration. We are looking for volunteers for the Passport
to Pagosa Wine & Food Festival on Friday, September 7th and for Bands, Brews, Etc. on Saturday,
September 8th. There are numerous volunteer opportunities such as event set up and break down, wine
and beer service, and clean up. We have some free or discount ticket passes for volunteers depending on
your level of volunteer duty.
The summer Visitor Center schedule will continue through Sunday, October 14th. Our annual Diplomat
Appreciation Dinner will be held on Tuesday, October 16th 2012. The location is yet to be determined, but
save the date so you don’t miss this wonderful year-end event! If you’re interested in working at either
Visitor Center location throughout the winter, please let me know. Thank you, for all you do, not only for
us but for the entire community.
Event News & Updates
By Stacy Kirby, Events Coordinator
ColorFest 2012
It seems hard to believe we are entering the month of August…where has the summer
gone?
Upcoming events for the Chamber include, Passport to Pagosa and Bands, Brews, Etc.
These are wonderful functions that bring our locals and visitors together to enjoy great food,
wonderful wines, local musical talent and incredible micro-breweries.
Don’t miss out this year! Passport to Pagosa tickets and Bands, Brews, Etc. are available
online NOW. Or you can pick them up at the Chamber anytime after August 1st or at the door.
The Chamber is proud to announce that it is now overseeing the Pagosa Balloon Rally. We are actively
seeking sponsors, lodging facilities and goody-bag swag. If you are interested in helping with any of the
above please contact Stacy Kirby @ 264-2360.
The 2012 Renaissance & Pirate Festival
The Renaissance and Pirate Festival concluded with a bang, literally. We had large
cannon firings every day at 2pm, pirate water walk and land jousting, along with
The Gypsy Players, Rakassah Jabal belly dance troupe, escape
artist Sir Mark Logsdon and more.
The Medieval Village doubled in size this year and a great time
was had by all! Attendance was equal to last year at 2,400;
however, attendees could enjoy double the amount of fun
activities. A special thanks to all our volunteers!
Happy Summer!

Review Your Business Description
As always, I recommend members review their contact information and business description on the Chamber website. Perhaps
your business mission or focus has changed but the description has not been updated. That could result in visitors receiving
Inaccurate information and not finding a business that meets their needs. Visit

Submit Keywords
I encourage members to submit keywords that will help locals and tourists find you, your business and your services. Basic membership

beyond those that are included in your business name or description. As an example, if you are in the lodging category you may want to enter
destination, resort or timeshare as keywords. Members must submit keywords to me at [email protected]; it is not something you

Updates from the Town Tourism Committee
In an effort to keep Chamber of Commerce members updated on the
efforts of the Town Tourism Committee, we are
going to begin providing updates in each
Chamber newsletter. First of all, we would like to thank the Chamber
staff, Board Members and all of the Diplomats and Ambassadors for their
efforts in greeting tourists, answering their questions and so much more.
Your service to the community is so important and the TTC tremendously
appreciates the wonderful job that you all do.
A few of the TTC’s recent projects have yielded noticeable results
around the community. Have you seen the new, colorful banners
hanging downtown? Stay tuned, there are plans for more. Have you
noticed the new trailhead and information
signs? We recently replaced 13 old, dreary
signs with new ones full of colorful, updated
maps and lots of photos. The new signs are located in Visitor Center parking lot, Town Park, at
the Reservoir Hill trailheads, Riverwalk, Rotary
Park and the US Forest Service signs on Hwy 84 at
Buckles Road and at the West Fork Valley Overlook. Before the new signs
were installed, members of the Wayfinding & Signage Subcommittee spent
two evenings staining and landscaping the sign structures. We would like to thank Mel and Darlene
Cassio with the Cassio Group and Linda and Chris Erskine with Design-a-Sign for their incredible
work in completing this project.
We also handle social media, print, online, and press & media relations
to promote Pagosa to possible tourists. We work closely with the
Colorado Tourism Office and their efforts to bring tourists to the state.
One area that we are particularly proud of is our growing FaceBook
page. We currently have over 5,100 fans. Check out our fan page at
www.facebook.com/visitpagosasprings and please post your amazing
photos of the area to our wall, too. We love to share as much of
Pagosa as we can!
On the following page, we have included a sample of our new Area Information Poster and Rack
Card. We will be delivering posters and rack cards to area businesses in early August. Our goal is to
provide as many possible ways for tourists, or those just passing through town, the opportunity to
find as much information as easily as possible. These pieces leverage QR codes to link phones to
our new booking engine, upcoming events, area activities and more.
If you have any questions, ideas, concerns or you are interested in getting involved, please give
Jennie Green, TTC Director, a call at 970-903-9728 or email us at [email protected].
