hometown parade, on
our newly-beautified Main Street, the town truly comes
to life in the summer months and one of the reasons is
the bountiful vegetation all around, with flowers blooming
and vegetables growing in abundance. Sonoma County is
truly one of the great breadbaskets of California and this
month our own Chuck Lucas highlights some of the
natural farms and stores that produce and sell much
of the healthy, organic produce that we are so lucky to
have access to in our local backyard.

We also tell a little of the fascinating history and local
roots of Levi jeans, a true San Francisco success story
that has become a worldwide phenomenon over the
last century. One of the Proud’s aims has always been to
uncover some of Penngrove’s own history through the
words of longtime local residents and, following in the
spirit of Jeannie Pratt who has given us so many wonderful
stories of the town’s rich past over the last few issues, Jan
Shaw, member of one of the town’s oldest families, shares
some of her reflections and memories of early Penngrove.

Another longtime resident is Thelma Donovan, this years
parade Grand Marshal, who will be riding in the lead fire
truck down Main Street and is profiled here. Parade Day
is always a special day in Penngrove that we can share
with local neighbors and friends as well as visitors from
far and wide who marvel at our little slice of small-town
America, and often wish their hometown had just a little
of the magic found in our quite special community. Please
come and say hello to us at the Proud’s booth in the park
after the parade, on your way to eat some of the tasty BBQ

If Clara Peller, the late actress who delivered the Wendy’s
catch phrase, “Where’s the Beef?” lived in Sonoma County
she would know where the beef is - and she would know
where the chickens, vegetables, fruits, breads, cheeses,
wines and beer are as well. We live in a region where the
term ‘SoCornucopia’ comes to mind amid the verdant hills,
blue ocean and orange sunsets. Our county is strewn with
organic farms and ranches that enable us to eat the way
our Neolithic ancestors did - without processing, packaging
and pesticides.
- is the one that makes us sick.” We have all read about the
“slow food” movement but, more often than not, we fail to
heed the message. Pollan says in his book, “Eat food, not
too much, mostly plants”. If we took his line to heart we
would all be healthier and thinner.
America is in the grips of a self-induced health crisis by
eating “foods” that our bodies are not designed to process.
According to statistics, sixty percent of Americans are
overweight. Diabetes is rising at an alarming rate. Heart
problems and cancers are wracking our bodies and our
health care system. These problems did not exist a mere
(for evolutionary purposes) 60,000 years ago or even before
WWII. The advent of processed “convenience” foods
changed all that. Food that is processed is heavy in sugars,
(especially high fructose corn syrup), salt and preservatives. Our organs are overtaxed. Our metabolisms are spent.
It is like putting jet fuel in a model T. It is just plain too
rich for our blood. Someone said “Health is the bodies
default mechanism” and when we put the correct fuel in it,
it will run properly as nature intended. The author of “The
Omnivore’s Dilemma”, Michael Pollan, asserts “The irony
is, the one diet we have invented for ourselves - the Western diet
Fortunately for us, living in SoCo we are afforded the
opportunity to eat the foods as nature intended - local
and in season. We have great local markets and farmer’s
markets dot almost every small town. If you want to live
a healthy lifestyle don’t eat anything that comes in a
package with a bar code. Since I’ve put this philosophy
into practice I have lost sixty-five pounds over the last two
years and it was effortless and enjoyable. I simply stopped
eating packaged and fast foods and I cook real food and
still enjoy my local beer from Lagunitas.

My mother and I have been researching our
family history and are interested in the James
and Lydia Goodwin family who were furniture
makers in San Francisco. They apparently had
built a home in Penngrove around 1870. Do
you know who we might talk to about the history of the area, or the house? We are assuming Goodwin Ave is named after them or one
of their descendants. (The family as far as we
know has died out except for our line which
does not carry the name.)

Welcome to Penngrove. Our local historian, Ellen
Harris, has a very informative book available to read
and or purchase at the local coffee shop, JavaMore,
in The Grove shopping area. I recommend stopping
in and checking the book out, saying hello to owner
Kim, who is a wealth of information herself and seeing if there are any chatty, local characters hanging
out. And don’t miss the great coffee and eats!
Dear Lynda
To bring you up to date. We did go to
Javamore and introduced ourselves to several
gentlemen having coffee. They had some suggestions but the firehouse won so off we went.
The fireman was very helpful in pin-pointing
where James Goodwin had lived and as we
walked out he introduced us to a Mr. Brian. His
family had lived around there for years and
he thought he knew the house. Well, he did!!
We went to door, introduced ourselves to the
owner and he showed us the house, inside
and out. It was wonderful. It has to be one
of the oldest homes in the area as we know it
was built in late 1880’s or before. We did buy
the book and it is interesting and was certainly
helpful.
Penngrove is distinguished! Penngrove School has been awarded the California
Distinguished School honor for 2010 by the State Department of Education.
Congratulations to everyone at our school. Several staff members were able to travel
to Anaheim to personally receive this honor. Another busy quarter lead up to it,
starting out with Penngrove School joining up with RUN, a project by non-profit
organization, Brute Labs. Project RUN was created to help students understand
the importance of exercise and a healthy diet. All students received a pedometer
and a card to keep track of how much they ran or walked at recess and before
school. They turned the cards in after a certain amount of activity was recorded to
be entered in a drawing for some fun prizes. The Student Leadership group had a
very successful fundraising effort selling Smencils, a pleasantly smelly pencil made
out of recycled newspaper. They raised enough to
purchase new basketball nets for the playground.
The school Open House was held mid-May with
great attendance in all classes. A Pasta Feed was
held prior to the classroom visits and the Drama
Club’s presentation of “The Wizard of Oz” afterwards. A full house was there to cheer them on.
Yummy desserts were available, supporting the 6th
Grade Outdoor Education Fund. Mr. Sanborn’s 4th
Grade class also did an end-of-year performance of
“Gold Dust or Bust” for students and parents (photo
on right). Great job from all of our actors this year.
The last Book Fair of the season was very successful
with many students taking advantage of the ‘buy
one book, get another one free’. We are very lucky Catherine Rauch, Stormy Anderson,
to have so many amazing volunteers and mentors at & Pearl O’Keefe in “Gold Dust or Bust.”
our Penngrove school. This year the PTA honored three Penngrove parents with the
esteemed Golden Oak award. This honor is given to individuals who have made a
significant difference in the daily lives of school children. Thank you Sheila Moore,
Debbie Koos and Heidi Dieffenbach-Carle, we appreciate all that you do. We also
thank all the PTA members for all their efforts throughout this past year, from the
special assemblies, Halloween Carnival, Talent Show, Movie Night, Skate Nights,
Red Ribbon Week and so much more. It really does take a whole community.

“Summer’s here and the time is right for
dancing in the streets,” as the song goes,
so make sure that you don’t miss the
biggest day of the year in Penngrove - the
July 4th celebration! The fun really starts
the day before on Saturday the 3rd with
the Rancho Adobe Firemen’s Pancake
Breakfast. Come and share a wonderful
morning meal with your neighbors. Then
Sunday is the big parade followed by the
Penngrove Social Firemen’s BBQ where
delicious tri-tip, burgers, oysters, and more
will be available to munch on, all washed
down with your favorite beverage! Make
sure to check out the crafts and wares and
different business booths, including yours
truly set up in the park, along with entertainment for the kids. You will notice that
some improvements have been going on
down at the park. Thanks go to members
of the Penngrove Social Firemen for a lot
of labor and painting and to a group of
four of our kids working on a senior class
project to help improve the playground.

have in town. The lamp posts, besides
their obvious value in lighting our way,
are charming in a nice ‘olde world’ kind
of way. The shops are looking good as
well with folks putting out various plants
and seating arrangements (top photo-Passanisi
downtown store). Take a stroll downtown soon
and check it out. We also have a couple
of new neighbors on the block. Yanni’s,
a European sausage shop, opens at the
beginning of July in the old Nini’s coffee
spot. Yanni and Francesca are combining their Greek and Italian heritages to
bring you a wide variety of homemade
sausages served up in many different ways.

Maverick Leather has moved up to the
top of Main St. Go and see all the beautiful leather bags, journals and artwork
they carry. The PSF annual rummage sale
was held May 1st. at the clubhouse. So
many varied items were available, a few
of which are now at my house. Everyone
had a fabulous time at ‘The Trucker’s Ball’
also put on by the PSF. Good music, dancing, food and fun. Summer Power-up Day
will be held on July 10th. this year up at
the Power & Implement Museum on
Phillips Drive. Don’t miss this opportunity
to see the engines come alive. Look out

Baking bread since 2004, the family-run Full Circle has
been milling organic flour and grain for more than a half

History of Penngrove
“In Her Own Words”
Jan Shaw – Jan comes from a Penngrove
family whose history goes back more than
150 years. Her family has lived on the
same piece of land on Petaluma Hill Road
above Adobe Road for several generations.
She kindly sat down and told us some of her
own memories of Penngrove and its history.
he did. In fact there are stories that the Chinese people
camped here, chopped the wood, hauled it by horse and
buggy down to the railroad and sent it to San Francisco.
I’m not sure when the railroad was established, all we know
is that it was 1870’s, or ‘80’s. How soon that was after he
bought it, I don’t know, but that is how he cleared it.
My great grandfather was born in Germany, and so was his
wife. They met on the steamer ship and were married later.
He bought this property, and although there is conflict in
dates to the original document, I’ve always heard it was in
the ‘1860’s.
After he split the land, it became seventy acres and little
by little through the years, with the school and the railroad
track and all the neighbors up and down the hill, it’s now
about six acres that fronts on to Petaluma Hill Road.
Originally he and his partner bought a hundred and sixty
acres which they split, and my great grandfather kept six
lots in Penngrove, from the vacant lot at the corner of
Adobe Road and Petaluma Hill Road down to what was the
first Fire Station. There were other purchases he made. He
may have had dealings with property all over Penngrove,
but this is where we settled, on this property here.
I was born and raised right here in this house in 1936, and
my folks gave me half an acre when I was married in 1954,
and we built a house next door in 1957. When I left this old
house, I just went next door, and we lived there for almost
40 years. After my husband and my Mom passed away, I
inherited this house, so I went back home! And my daughter went back to where she was born and raised, next door.
The first thing he did, as the story goes, is that he cleared all
the trees off the land so he could farm, because that’s what

In this issue Penngrove Proud will talk about buying local
with three long-time entrepreneurs who are making buying
local a reality. Your support is essential for their success and
important for your own health as well as that of your families.
Oliver’s Market in Cotati has long been a leader in bringing in meat and produce that is grown and raised locally and
is one of the biggest boosters of the “local-vore” movement.
Oliver’s general manager, Tom Scott, recently spent some time
with us discussing the advantages and some of the problems
of purchasing local products for Oliver’s three stores in SoCo.
At each store they feature a large gallery of sixty photos of
local producers and other entrepreneurs and urge the shopper to support local efforts. Oliver’s breaks down “local” into
two categories: 1) “Go Local” as in grown in SoCo; and 2)
“Locally Grown” which includes the five adjacent counties of
Napa, Mendocino, Lake, Marin and Solano. It is important to
remember that money spent when buying local goods stays in
Sonoma County and does not go back to corporate headquarters like money spent at the major chain stores. This is vitally
important to our economy and better for the environment and
our bodies as well.
One of my favorite pleasures is shopping at Oliver’s. I often
bring visitors to Oliver’s and they always come away with a
sense of awe and a certain feeling that this is what grocery
shopping should be. They are always impressed with the
organic selections and especially the fact that they can enjoy
the “Back to the Future” concept of purchasing local grass-fed
beef that an actual butcher cuts up and wraps in butcher paper
and not a shrink-wrapped package with a disgusting soaker
pad on a yellow plastic tray. There is no “French Paradox”.
They simply eat good food and not too much. They are not hunched over a TV dinner watching “Wheel of Fortune”. They
eat at a table and eat real food. It’s that simple and they don’t have
the same health burden that the American diet presents.
Arguably, SoCo is home to some of the finest grass-fed
beef in the world. Some scientists say it is the high quality grasses that are plentiful and nutritious. We are very

These humble beginnings laid the foundation for Oliver’s
Markets. Steve got
a lease on the empty
store in the Rancho
Cotati Shopping
Center in 1988.
Tom Scott opened
his own market six
months later in what
is now Oliver’s in
Summer 2010
the Montecito shopping center. Tom approached Steve
to meet and discuss the grocery business. Two years later
Tom decided that the business was not headed in the
right direction and split from his partners. The two soon
decided that there was a really good fit and they began
working together in 1990. Tom Scott is now the general
manager of all three stores.

are grown right in our own backyard.
They may not have their own masseuse like Kobe beef, but they have
it pretty good. Recently Oliver’s was
able to contract with Hicks Valley
grass-fed beef to supply the large quantities that Oliver’s needed. Grass-fed
beef is a totally different animal that
corn-fed beef. It is lower in omega-6
fats that are related to heart disease,
and is higher in beneficial omega-3
fats and conjugated linoleic acids.
Both reduce the risk of heart disease.

Grass-fed beef tastes like the beef my
grandmother used to prepare when I was a child. The animals do not spend their last days on earth in inhumane
crowded feedlots while being “finished” with grain to
increase their size and pumped with hormones and antibiotics that are administered because of the unsanitary conditions of the feed lot.
Grass-fed beef also reduces pesticides and residues that are
pumped into our air and water systems by growing animal feed like corn and soybeans. Corn and its seemingly
inseparable sidekick soybeans are raised intensively in the
mid-west states and vast forms of subsidies come from the
government to keep the prices low while we should be subsidizing, if anything, natural foods.

As you wander the organic vegetable aisle in Oliver’s
with your green grocery cart you may come upon Robert
Caamal who is in charge of the organic produce. With his
long black flowing ponytail Robert knows a lot more about
produce than stacking organic onions in an artistic fashion.
In his ‘spare’ time, Robert is also an organic farmer. Robert
and his partner Felix Diaz lease twenty acres of farmland on
Stony Point Road that they sell to Oliver’s, Pacific, Fiesta markets and farmers markets in Sonoma and Marin
Counties.
Robert has been farming since he was six years old in the
Yucatan with his father. Now his Los Pelacano Farm is
leasing 20 acres that have been fallow for 35 years and
until Robert and Felix took over it was pasture for cows
producing organic milk for Strauss Dairies of Marin. They
became organic certified last year and hope to add an ’s

to make production limits optimal.

uses fossil fuels that
add significantly to
pollution. The tilling of these crops
allows top soil to
become dust particles in the air and
leads to soil erosion and flooding –
think recent floods
in Iowa for an indication of what this looks like. Grass-fed
beef on the other hand works hand in hand with nature.
It uses no chemical fertilizers; the cows do that for the
rancher. The animals graze naturally like the bison once
did on America’s plains. They lead a great life, at least
if you are a bovine, until they fulfill their final destiny.
When that day comes they are not confined in terror in
feedlots as they are in fragrant Coalinga along route 101.
They simply take their last walk with no knowledge of
what’s coming next. We should all be so lucky

additional forty acres next season. An accomplished chef in
traditional Mayan dishes, Robert was also a professional chef
featuring French, Italian and traditional American cuisines.
Los Pelacanos Farm with its sweeping views of the
Petaluma plain produces a large variety of heirloom
tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes, zucchinis, and organic
strawberries. They also supply herbs for Bauman College
in Penngrove. Besides providing produce for local groceries they hope to expand to CSA’s, (Consumer
Supported Agriculture), next year. When produce is in
season you may purchase the produce directly from the
growers but you should call Robert on his cell phone at
415-246-1566 to make sure someone is there besides a
Brandywine tomato plant.

are ready to have your home grown beef butchered. Matt or
one of his twelve employees drive in a truck with a spotless
stainless steel shed perched on the back to ranches that dot
the countryside and humanely kill and quarter a steer and
then take it back to the shop and cut it up and package it
for the freezer. In 1998 Matt, decided to quit his construction business and return to the shop full time. They raise
and breed their own cattle, which are grass-fed and free
from antibiotics. Their beef is dry-aged for three weeks in
large coolers before it is presented for sale.
Along Petaluma Hill Road just across from Valley House
Road close to the truck that sells tie-dyed t-shirts and
roses, you will see the beautiful hand painted sign on a
buckboard that indicates you are at the home of Buds
Meats. Enter the bucolic oak tree lined lane with the
beautifully restored fence and you will soon come upon the
rural butcher shop run by Bud’s son, Matt Gamba. Once
part of the pioneering Brian Ranch, it houses another of
SoCo’s hidden gems.
Buds also processes 15 to 20 local hogs and 60 lamb from
Potter Valley and Chilano Valley per week and they make
the best jerky I’ve ever tasted. It’s also the best place I’ve
found for dog bones.

Matt appreciates the ultimate sacrifice the animals are making for our food chain and is very respectful of the animals
in his charge. They die quickly and do not suffer the indignity of the feedlot. If you are an omnivore the question is
not about eating meat; it is about the quality of the meat
and how the animal is raised and slaughtered that matters.
If you have the taste for exotic meats and are not a hunter
you should try Buds for their grass fed bison (I think it’s as
good as the beef), elk, venison or wild boar. Most of these
meats are not actually local but come from other parts of
California and as far away as Texas but let’s face it, this is
not where the buffalo roam.

This year’s Penngrove Fourth of July Parade will
feature Thelma Donovan riding in the first fire engine
as the Parade’s Grand Marshal. Thelma was admittedly very surprised by the announcement and is thrilled
to receive such a high honor from the community.

Thelma was born in San Rafael in Marin County. She
married her late husband, George, in Reno, Nevada in 1941.
During the early part of WWII, Thelma lived in San Francisco
with her husband’s sisters and worked for Mackay Radio that was
engaged in the business of transmitting and receiving telegraph,
radio, and cable messages from Europe and around the U.S.
Thelma in her backyard with a fully functioing train built by her sons
in Vallejo and San Francisco’s China town. They often took
part in dinners at the now vacant Green Mill - they loved the
smorgasbord. They enjoyed frequent good times at the Twin
Oaks and were also regulars at Kelly’s (now the Black Cat).
Thelma was a founding member of the Penngrove Social
Firemen in the early ‘50’s and is still an honorary member today.
From 1943 to 1945, Thelma worked for Marin Ship in Sausalito
while her husband was in the Army. Previously he had
been a driller working on ships at Mare
Island which was
the first Naval base
on the Pacific coast
and an important
site for shipbuilding beginning in
the Civil War. Mare
Island was as busy as
a beehive during the
war building ships
and
submarines.

Thelma and George had nine children, all of whom
attended Penngrove School and high school in Petaluma.
All of them will be there to see Thelma honored by Penngrove.
Her son is flying in from Philadelphia and her daughter is coming from North Carolina to see the parade and a big family
barbeque is planned for after the event. Her three great-grandchildren will also see her lead the parade.
Currently, Thelma enjoys tending her flower
garden, embroidery, and being a member of the
Red Hat Society and she grows grapes for a little juice.

where George began
dressing chickens
from local farmers that he distributed twice a week



LEVI’s HAVE THEIR ROOTS IN THE CALIFORNIA
GOLD RUSH OF 1850

In the last few decades, jeans have moved from being exclusive teen gear of the 60s to a mode of dress for all. In the
current era of designer denim, gone (in the main) but not
forgotten, are the days when it was cool to wear threadbare,
patched, see through holes and fancy embroidered jeans
which were only fit for the rag bag, yet were loved and treated with tender loving care by their proud wearers, and were a
real thorn in the flesh to exasperated mothers (me included).

Despite all this, jeans do have an honorable heritage and it
may surprise you to know that there are several pairs preserved for posterity in the Smithsonian Institute. They are all
“Levi’s” and they stem back to the California gold rush days.
One of the miners asked what dry goods he had brought
with him. After telling him, Levi was amazed when the man
retorted “should have brought pants,” apparently what was
available were not strong enough to last long.
Levi Strauss, a Bavarian immigrant, sailed from New York in
1850 and landed in San Francisco with thousands of others in
the midst of the gold rush. He was only twenty years old, neat
and dapper in appearance, with a keen eye to business and an
astute mind. He had brought with him a small quantity of dry
goods, including some canvas for tents and covered wagons;
he was hoping to do business with some of the prospectors.
Levi had the seed of an idea. He took one of his precious
rolls of canvas to a tailor and commissioned him to make a
pair of pants for the miner. They proved to be just the thing,
strong hard-wearing, long lasting, and before long all the
other miners were wanting “those pants of Levi’s.” Thus was
born a brand name and an item of clothing that has become
famous all over the world.

sequins, embroidery,
piping and other fancy
embellishments.
Levi adopted a two horse trademark label together with a
back pocket metal Levi tab to guarantee genuine Levi’s.
By the 1880s Levi Strauss had set up a company and had
become the world’s largest pant maker. His plant in San
Francisco employed 500 workers. Attention was paid to
practicality and bottoms of pants were made with a slight
flare to fit over boots, known as ‘spring bottom pants’.
Gradually other garments were added to their line of production - overalls, blouse jackets, engineers coat, combination
coat, jumpers - all riveted and many blanket lined. They
became the working man’s garb, and were worn by the miners, cowboys, lumbermen, farmers etc. Which is why they
have become part of the North American history.
There have been many imitators, but Levi’s still lead the field
even though it is more than one and a quarter centuries later.
Levi Strauss died in 1902. He was unmarried and therefore
had no heirs. To secure its future the business had been
incorporated in 1890 and it has continued as a successful

What is a Mother?
A delicious chilled pie that everyone will enjoy on a
hot summer day. Visit your local Farmer’s Markets
for many varieties of wonderful fresh berry finds
this time of year. Makes a nice festive holiday pie.
A mother is someone to shelter and guide us,
To love us, whatever we do,
With a warm understanding and infinite patience,
And wonderful gentleness, too.
How often a mother means swift reassurance
In soothing our small, childish fears,
How tenderly mothers watch over their children
And treasure them all through the years!
The heart of a mother is full of forgiveness
For any mistake, big or small,
And generous always in helping her family
Whose needs she has placed above all.
A mother can utter a word of compassion
And make all our cares fall away,
She can brighten a home with the sound of her laughter
And make life delightful and gay.
A mother possesses incredible wisdom
And wonderful insight and skill In each human heart is that one special corner
Which only a mother can fill!
Vanilla Berry Pie
Ingredients:
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 cups milk
3 egg yolks, lightly beaten
2 tablespoons butter
1- 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 pint heavy cream
1- 1/2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
1 (9 inch) pie shell, baked
1 pint fresh strawberries, halved
1 cup fresh berries of choice

Directions:
In a 3-qt. saucepan, combine sugar, flour and salt.
Add milk, stirring until smooth. Cook and stir over
medium heat until thickened. Stir in small amount
of milk mixture into yolks, then return all to saucepan. Cook, stirring for 2 minutes. Remove from the
heat; stir in butter and vanilla. Cool 20 minutes.
Pour into pie shell; chill several hours until firm.
Whip cream and sugar; spread half over pie filling.
Arrange berries on cream. Dollop or pipe remaining cream around edge of pie.
