Integrated Heatsink/Port Design

rise to many breakthroughs in multimedia design. One of these has been the
use of the integrated heatsink/port design, which allows for a lower overall
part count and cost, as well as for an increase in reliability. Another added
advantage is the more effective cooling (and, therefore, greater efficiency) of
components due to increased airflow over the heatsink.

The use of testing facilities at its Northridge, CA, location allows Harman to use the most advanced testing equipment and
methods available. Harman subjects its drivers to the industry’s toughest testing regimen, which includes using lasers to find
the best materials and laminates for optimal driver performance, and testing in real-world rooms filled with real-world furniture.

>> The Harman International campus in Northridge is one of the best acoustic test facilities in the world. The use of its 2 π
and 4 π acoustic test chambers and open-field anechoic chambers allows Harman to build systems that meet only the highest

Phoenix SE Driver (utilizes JBL TSR™ surround technology)
The development of the Harman Phoenix was driven by the need for a full-range, high-power-capable, compact driver for
desktop speaker systems with small enclosures. The driver uses the patent-pending JBL TSR™ (JBL Tangential Strain Relief™)
surround geometry. This technology uses alternative surround and spider geometry to achieve high levels of excursion
and low levels of distortion that are not possible with standard surrounds. The JBL TSR geometry allows Harman
to achieve driver performance that’s significantly better than that of other manufacturers. JBL TSR technology can
be seen on the driver’s surround, which has a unique geometry to increase maximum excursion of the diaphragm;
this provides for very large excursions with linear mechanical response. The inverted aluminum dome provides
full-range response from 90Hz to 20kHz. The motor consists of a neodymium magnet and a four-layer voice coil over a
Kapton® former. This driver works in enclosure volumes down to 500cc. Harman has produced and shipped more than 1 million
Phoenix drivers.

Technical Highlights 2
Odyssey® I and Odyssey II
The development of the Harman Odyssey® I and Odyssey II drivers was driven by the need for a full-range, high-powercapable, compact driver for laptops and small enclosures. The drivers use a single-suspension half-roll surround. The inverted
aluminum dome provides full-range response from 120Hz to 20 kHz for the Odyssey I, and 150 Hz to 20 kHz for the Odyssey II.
The motor consists of a neodymium magnet and a four-layer voice coil over a Kapton former. This driver works in enclosure
volumes down to 50cc for the Odyssey I, and 150cc for the Odyssey II. Harman has produced and shipped more than 40 million
Odyssey I drivers and more than 5 million Odyssey II drivers.

The Ridge high-frequency driver is dedicated to the smooth reproduction of high frequencies, and is part of the HALO
(Horizontal Acoustic Level Optimization) acoustic design used in the JBL On Time™ system. The high performance of this driver,
coupled with the unique driver arrangement, provides a uniform, smooth high-frequency response in the horizontal axis, giving
the listener a more enjoyable listening experience, independent of where the JBL On Time is located.

JBL Atlas Drivers
TM
The Atlas™ driver is a compact, low-frequency driver with unbelievable bass performance, designed to produce constant force and stiffness over its operating displacement. The driver utilizes MAPS (Minimum Audio Parameter Shift) design to ensure performance stays constant.
Some competitor drivers produce high SPL (output levels), but the distortion
that plagues these small speakers at higher output levels dramatically affects the
audio experience. MAPS suppresses distortion, even at the highest output levels.
The Atlas driver’s magnetic structure, coil and frame all have unique aerodynamic vents
to minimize noise and distortion. The driver has an unprecedented excursion-to-size ratio
– a 20mm peak-to-peak excursion relative to a 65mm radiating diameter/89mm driver. In
comparison, a 38cm woofer would have to move 9cm to match! This characteristic enables
JBL speakers to achieve very good bass extension from very small enclosures. The driver
utilizes two massive, ultra-high-strength neodymium magnets in an opposing external-ring
magnet geometry that provides a powerful and highly symmetric magnetic field with very
low leakage.
>> The Harman Suzhou Electronics facility in Suzhou, China, has been created
by Harman for the manufacture of high-performance, high-technology drivers.
The addition of the Harman Suzhou Electronics facility brings added value to
both Harman and Harman customers. Control of manufacturing, quality,
engineering, documents and purchasing gives Harman an advantage over
other suppliers in the Chinese manufacturing market.
Surround Materials
Magnum® 4 and Magnum 6 Drivers
>> Harman has developed the use of alternative surround materials. The industry typically
uses only black foam for surrounds, which, although inexpensive and straightforward to manufacture, limits design flexibility. Harman’s use of several proprietary rubber compounds
and coloring agents allows for surround design to match performance goals, as well as
to become part of the overall design philosophy.

Complete Driver Design and Manufacture
The development of the Harman multimedia Magnum series of subwoofer
drivers was driven by the need for a high-power-capable, compact lowfrequency driver for desktop speaker systems with small enclosures. The
Magnum drivers were designed to optimize the cost-to-performance ratio
for small subwoofers. The Magnum series utilizes a standard half-roll
surround, ceramic magnet and paper cone. Harman has produced and
shipped more than 2 million Magnum drivers.
