Message from the
FOUNDATION CHAIR & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
2012–2013 ALGONQUIN COLLEGE FOUNDATION
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Thank you for your generous support
We are pleased to celebrate with you some of the Algonquin College Foundation’s
2012-2013 accomplishments, which are due to the generosity of our donors, our College
and Foundation Board leadership and the tireless commitment of our Campaign
Cabinet volunteers.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Before describing these endeavours, we wish to acknowledge and pay tribute to
Sal Iacono for his leadership as Chair these past two years. In particular, Sal enhanced
the Foundation’s community focus due to his extensive experience as a former
United Way Chair and also, shared his business acumen and insights to help guide
Foundation activities.
We would also like to pay special tribute to Cathy Palmer, who retired in July after serving
as the face of the Foundation Office since its inception in 2003. We will all miss Cathy’s
great sense of humour, no nonsense approach, and steadfast support. Cathy — we wish
you all the best in your retirement!
A special highlight from this year’s outreach was the unveiling of three donor walls in
recognition of the generous contributions to the Constructing OUR Future Campaign in
support of the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence Campaign (ACCE), in
Ottawa; the Building OUR College, OUR Community, OUR Future Campaign in support of
the new Algonquin College Heritage Institute, in Perth; and the Strengths in Partnerships
Transportation Campaign, in support of the Transportation Technology Centre.
We look forward to another unveiling, in Pembroke, in the not too distant future.
Campaigns continue to raise funds to support both the Pembroke and Perth Campaigns.
The Foundation also offered more activities to College alumni with an Alumni Night with
the SENS and two social events.
In addition to the initiatives listed above, funds were raised for student bursaries and
scholarships and the College was the grateful recipient of substantial gifts-in-kind
donations. In total, over $4.54 million was donated to the Algonquin College Foundation.

ALUMNI RELATIONS
During 2012-2013, Alumni Relations took a new direction in the College. The new

Algonquin alumni are proud and strong as witnessed by the nomination of six
candidates for the Ontario Colleges Premier’s Awards, which were held in Toronto in
November 2012. The Premier’s Awards recognize the tremendous contribution that
Ontario’s college graduates make to the success of the province. Algonquin College’s

TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY CENTRE — Ottawa
Strengths in Partnerships Transportation Campaign
The Foundation’s first campaign was initiated in 2004 to raise funds to support the new
Transportation Technology Centre (TTC). In partnership with the Ottawa New Car Dealers
Association (ONCDA), regional auto dealers and national manufacturers came forward to
raise over $1 million towards building the Centre and in support of student bursaries.

Numerous alumni events were held this past year and highlights include the Alumni
Night with the Ottawa Senators, alumni information session at the Algonquin College
Corporate Training Centre and the sold-out Algonquin College Retiree Holiday Social in
December.
Towards the end of the fiscal year, the Alumni Relations department embarked on a
comprehensive survey with our alumni. The results and feedback will be analyzed and
used as a benchmark to form the upcoming Alumni Business Plan. Our overarching goal
will be to better engage our alumni and to provide the services and resources that
alumni consider to be the most beneficial.

DONOR WALL
Last spring, the Foundation unveiled the TTC donor wall to pay tribute and express
appreciation to the generous campaign contributors and also, the campaign volunteers
who donated numerous hours to fundraise for this worthwhile initiative. The unveiling
followed the College’s approval of a unique donor recognition design that is being
implemented across all three Campuses.

ALGONQUIN CENTRE FOR CONSTRUCTION EXCELLENCE —
Ottawa
Constructing OUR Future Campaign
On March 7, 2013, donors to the Constructing OUR Future Campaign in support of the
$79 million Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE) joined College
President, Dr. Kent MacDonald, in the magnificent ACCE atrium to witness the unveiling
of a Donor Wall that recognizes their generous support. The Campaign surpassed its
$7 million goal by over $500,000.
CELEBRATING A NEW COLLABORATION
between Ciena and Algonquin College
In November 2012, Ciena and Algonquin College marked the start of a new
collaboration with the grand unveiling of advanced optical telecommunications
equipment, which was installed in Algonquin College’s Ciena Optophotonics Lab.
The equipment, donated by Ciena, is empowering the next generation of
telecommunication engineers by permitting practical learning opportunities with
technology that is in use in the networks of major telecommunication providers around
the world. It also allows for greater collaboration with other educational institutions,
laboratories, and advanced research and innovation networks to further their learning.
DONOR WALL
The ACCE programs are full and the building is doing what it was designed to do —
inspire the public to think differently about careers in construction and to consider
options for their future that they might not have previously considered.
The building was also designed to showcase sustainability and this has been a true
success. This past November, the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence
officially received LEED Platinum certification from the Canada Green Building Council.
High performing buildings and their
associated technologies are a growing
interest in the trades and this facility
is helping to promote that interest.
Students are being drawn to the
College — to this centre — to experience
a new way of learning. As our
Campaign Cabinet had hoped,
the new centre is helping to promote
the construction industry as a
first-choice career destination.
CIENA RECOGNITION EVENT
James Frodsham, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, Ciena, and Rodney Wilson,
Senior Director of External Research, Ciena, receive a certificate of appreciation from
College President, Dr. Kent MacDonald .
“Technology is changing the world,” said Algonquin College President Kent MacDonald. “It’s
changing how we do business. It’s changing how we conduct research. It’s changing how we tell
time — just ask a student what time it is and you won’t find them checking their wrist watch but
pulling out a mobile device. Their ability to grow, to discover and to innovate is even greater now
thanks to Ciena’s donation. It has raised the bar on what is possible and given our students — and
our future graduates — what they need to move confidently forward to accomplish their dreams.”
THANK YOU for contributing to OUR 2012-2013 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

ENDOWMENT FUNDS
grow to support STUDENT RETENTION
$1.098 million dollars was donated through renewal gifts and five new named funds
that were established between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013.
Our Foundation is proud to list the following new endowment funds:
John and Carol Dunfield Bursary
Robert C. Gillett Leadership Scholarship
n Little Family Bursary
n John Waters Bursary
n Grace Whitmore Scholarship
n
Donors to the Constructing OUR Future Campaign shared the vision that the new
Centre would help shape the future of the construction industry. With this in mind
the Campaign Cabinet made a recommendation that the College use the funds raised
beyond the $7 million goal to establish the Algonquin Centre for Construction
Excellence Endowed Bursary.
This legacy gift, from the construction industry, is now valued at $500,000 and will
support deserving, financially-challenged students who are studying in a program
within the new Centre – in perpetuity! Each year, roughly 25 students receive
funds to complete their education. In the words of one recipient:
n
Thank you to these donors for establishing newly named funds and to others for
generously renewing their annual support.
WORDS OF GRATITUDE FROM
A BURSARY RECIPIENT
To all of our Constructing OUR Future Campaign donors: Thank you for helping this
Centre of Excellence to become a beacon and a catalyst that is instilling a sense of
pride in all those who are choosing to work in this dynamic and powerful industry.
ACCE Receives GNCOC Award
At the Greater Nepean Chamber of Commerce 2012 Business Achievement Awards,
the College received two awards. The Algonquin College Foundation was recognized
with the Not-for-Profit award, and the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence won
in the Green Award category.

ALGONQUIN COLLEGE HERITAGE INSTITUTE — Perth
Building OUR College OUR Community OUR Future Campaign
ALGONQUIN COLLEGE IN THE OTTAWA VALLEY — Pembroke
Your College Your Community Your Future Campaign
The Algonquin College Foundation received its largest alumni gift to date in support of
the new $10.4 million campus, in Perth. The family of alumnus Dave Trick generously
donated $100,000 through the Dave and Ann Trick Family Foundation and in doing so,
recognized the value of this small, friendly campus that provides a high quality
education to students residing in Lanark County and the surrounding area.
The new $36 million waterfront campus, in Pembroke, opened last fall and is now home to
approximately 900 full-time students. The campus is surrounded by beautiful countryside,
forests, lakes and rivers — the perfect location for some of the most exhilarating outdoor
programs on earth.
A committed Campaign team continues to
actively work with community leaders from the
Renfrew and Pontiac Counties to raise funds in
support of the new campus. The communities
the College serves have rallied to support a
number of fundraising activities including the
annual capital campaign golf tournament that
has now raised almost $128,000 over the past
five years.
(Left) Campus Dean Karen Davies smiles as she thanks
everyone who made the new campus possible at the
opening ceremony in November 2012.
TRICK FAMILY DONATION
Algonquin College President, Dr. Kent MacDonald, together with Shelley Carter-Rose,
Dean, Algonquin College Heritage Institute, and Lana March, Campaign Chair, were
joined by fellow campaign members and other College staff to celebrate the unveiling
of the Perth Campus donor wall.
The opening of the new waterfront campus was a special time for staff, and they played
a major role in helping the campaign when they presented the College with a cheque for
more than $60,000 in June of this year — money raised through pay roll deductions,
one-time gifts and special events organized by the staff.
PEMBROKE STAFF DONATION
PERTH DONOR WALL
Campaign donations continue to be received for the new Perth Campus. Each gift
reinforces the value of a rural campus and helps to bring our students closer to their
career goals.

As we continue to work towards our community fundraising target of $2.5 million, we ask
you to continue to spread the word about the many benefits of this new campus for
everyone in our region. Our students are embracing new opportunities because of your
belief and support of Algonquin College.
We encourage you to visit our wonderful new campus and see the result of your
outstanding generosity.
