January Outlook
Dakota Geyer
During the month of January,
winter sports have been underway for a while. Basketball, wrestling, cheerleading,
and dance have gone through
almost half of their season if
not more. Each sport has
done a great job so far.
Boys’ basketball has
been doing great. The boys
participated in the Graber
Post tourney on December
18th. Each of the three games
was close contests but the
Rangers only came out with
one win against South Knox.
They then traveled to Barr
Reeve to play the mighty Vikings. It was a barn burner,
but the Rangers came out
behind with a score of 44-54.
That set their record at 3-6.
They then came storming
back with a big victory over
Perry Central, which only had
one loss before playing the
Rangers. They then had two
PAC games in a row against
South Spencer and North Posey. The Rangers convincingly won both of those games.
Girls’ basketball has been
through nearly all of their
games. They went to the
Eastern Greene tourney on
December 27th, 28th, and
29th. They came out with
two wins and two losses.
They then traveled to Dubois
to play the Jeeps, which ended in a loss. Their next opponent was against PAC rival
Pike Central. They won by a
large margin with a final
score of 43-29. The girls lost
their last two games against
Corydon Central and Barr
Reeve. Their current record
is 10-8.
Wrestling has started
off strong and is doing well.
The wrestlers traveled to the
North Knox tourney on December 3rd. They ended up
forth out of eight teams. Cody Flamion and Casey Abell
were the champions in their
weight classes. They then
matched up against Washington at home but came up with
a loss.
The cheerleaders
have been putting in a lot of
time to perfect their cheers for
the basketball games. They
have done a fantastic job
leading the fans during the
games. If you have not seen
them yet, come and cheer
with them at any basketball
game.
The dancers have
also been busy during the
winter months. They have
been practicing every night to
perfect their routines. They
perform in front of fans during the basketball games and
also in competitions. They
recently went to Vincent Lincoln and Greenfield Central
for competitions.
They
placed 2nd in hip-hop and
kick at Vincent Lincoln.
They placed 1st in kick, 2nd
in pom to Floyd Central and
3rd in hip hop at Greenfield
Central.

Teacher Spotlight

This month’s spotlighted teacher
is Mr. Tenbarge, better known to
his students as Herr T. Herr T is
an excellent teacher, regarded by
his students as one of the best
here at Forest Park. Though you
will only have Herr T if you are
taking German, you can see him
as you walk through the eighth
grade hallways and will commonly say hi to any student that
passes by. “He is a fun teacher
to be around and I look forward
to his class everyday” , says
German 2 student and sophomore Brett Wiederkehr.
of Forest Park’s longestrunning teachers. He has never
taught at any other school, he
has been here for his entire
teaching career. Before he
taught here at Forest Park, he
attended college at Indiana
State University and Indiana
University. He also studied at
Goethe Institut in Germany to
learn how to more properly
speak German. Besides teaching, he has worked at Mead
Johnson Pharmaceuticals and
Holiday World during the summer with some of his fellow
students and teachers. Herr T
has taught German since his
first year here at Forest Park,

History.” It seems as if Ms.
Niehaus ever needs a replacement,
Herr T would be up for the job.
When asked which year
of German was his favorite to
teach, Herr T responded, “That is
a tough question to answer. I enjoy the enthusiasm of beginning
students, but I also like working
with advanced students too.” Herr
T obviously loves teaching here at
Forest Park or he would not have
stayed here for thirty-five years.
“Students are friendly and for the
most part they are cooperative and
polite. The staff and administration are great to work with.”
One of the best qualities
about Herr T as a teacher is how
well he can keep students attention. He commonly incorporates
humor into his teaching methods
and is quite the storyteller as well.
Ask him to tell the story about his
cat Fluffy, or as his German students will recognize, Fluffy Die
Katze. Herr T is not afraid to get
off topic, yet, at the same time, he
makes his stories relevant to the
topic he is teaching.

Prayers For Paul
Bailey Cronin
“Never, never, never give up.” Winston Churchill.
Nine-year-old, Paul Fischer, is
doing just that. Those who have
had the chance to meet him
know that he is a smart, athletic,
and loving little boy. While
playing multiple sports, working
hard in school, and still finding
time to give to anyone he can,
he shows how wonderful he
truly is. As most of us know,
Paul had an unfortunate event
recently happen. It all started
when he was experiencing headaches and nausea, causing him
to go to the doctor. The doctor
ordered an MRI to be done as
soon as possible. After having
an MRI done at Memorial Hospital in Jasper, Paul Fischer was
diagnosed with a brain tumor on
December 19th, 2011. Immediately sent to Riley Hospital for
Children in Indianapolis, he and
his family had no idea what they
would soon face. There, the
children specialists had another
MRI taken to see exactly what
they would be dealing with.
Paul lost most of his hearing
and the life he once lived. He
encountered urgent surgery the
next day to remove as much
of the tumor as they could.
After extracting three inches,
the family was notified that
the tumor was very aggressive and cancerous. Sadly,
the surgeon was not able to
remove all of it because of
how deep it was in his brain;
therefore, as Paul took time
to heal, it kept growing. Fortunately, Paul was released on
Christmas Day to enjoy the holidays with family and friends at
home. On January 3, 2012 he returned to Riley’s to have a spinal
tap done in order to determine if
cancer cells were present in his
spine. Thankfully, this test came
back clean giving family, friends,
and doctors more hope. Paul was
officially diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) on January 6, 2012. A brain tumor that is
aggressive, fast-growing, and contains many fingers that spread
through his brain. He was once
again sent home in order for him to
recover from the surgery before
starting treatment. After deciding
Paul’s treatment plan, he went back
to Riley’s to receive another MRI
on January 11th. To make matters
worse, the MRI showed that the
tumor had strongly grown back
causing swelling and hemorrhaging. Paul was then admitted to
Riley’s again and immediately
started radiation. On January 14th,
he was moved to the intensive care
unit in order to be closely monitored due to his decreasing heart
rate. After having a few better
days, the doctors decided to start
Paul’s chemotherapy treatment on
January 18th. The following day,
he was released out of the ICU,
which was a good sign.
This little boy is fighting
to win. He appreciates everyone
who has contacted or helped him
or his family in any way. To get
more information on his medical
updates, meal plans for family,
sending comments to him, making
donations, or sending something to
the hospital check out his website,
www.praysforpaul.com. “Prayers
For Paul” bracelets are also being
sold for five dollars as a fundraiser
for the family. If interested, please

Martin Luther King Jr. Day
By Shelby Bettag
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated all across America on the third
Monday of January. This legend was
born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta,
Georgia. His original name was Michael, but he later changed it to Martin. His family was known for its long
line of pastors. Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, and he graduated from high school
at the young age of fifteen. King then
received a degree from Morehouse
College; his father and grandfather
also graduated from Morehouse. He
was elected president of a mostly
white senior class at Crozer Theological Seminary, and continued his studies at Boston University. He received
his doctorate in 1955, when he met
and married Coretta Scott. They had
two sons and two daughters together.
In 1954, he became the
pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist
Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
He had always been outspoken
about civil rights, and by this time,
he was a member of the National
Association for the Advancement of
Colored People. He later accepted
the leadership position of the first
great Negro nonviolent demonstration. The bus boycott lasted 382
days, and on December 21, 1956,
the Supreme Court ruled that both
races ride the buses as equals. Dur-
ing the duration of the boycott, King was
arrested and his house was bombed.
In 1957, he was elected president of
the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. This was an organization formed to
provide new ideas for civil rights. Between
1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke about civil rights over
twenty-five hundred times. These speeches
were given in areas with injustice, protest,
and action. In the meantime, he wrote five
books about the subject. Also during these
years, he led a massive civil rights protest in
Birmingham, Alabama, that caught the attention of the entire world. He also led the
peaceful march on Washington, D.C., where
he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream”
speech in front of 250,000 people. During
King’s lifetime, he was arrested around twenty times and assaulted around four times. He
was awarded five honorary degrees, named
Man of the Year by Time magazine, and became known world-wide. At the age of thirty
-five, King was named the youngest man to
receive a Nobel Peace prize, and later donated the money to further the civil rights movement.
On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther
King Jr. was standing on the balcony of his
motel room in Memphis, Tennessee. He was
getting ready to lead a civil rights march,
when he was assassinated. King died that
evening, but his legend lives on today.

Dance Team
By Jayme Roos
No doubt, the dance
team continually strives to work
hard as they start off their competition season. The girls
kicked off their first competition
of the year with an excellent
outcome. They traveled to Vincennes Lincoln where they competed against one of their biggest rivalries, Floyd Central
High School. The dance team
finished second in both their hip
-hop and pom routines. It was a
close competition, but the girls
ended up losing first place by
only less than one point in both
of the routines. After competing at Vincennes Lincoln the
dance team traveled back home
to perform at half-time during
the boys’ basketball game
where they show cased their
jazz dance routine to Bon Jovi.
The dance team’s next
competition took place at
Greenfield Central. The dance
team had an exciting weekend
after performing their kick, hip-
hop, and pom routines and
placing in the top three in all
categories. The girls were
extremely satisfied with their
kick performance and came
home with a first place victory
against Crawfordsville and
Mitchell. They also did a
great job performing hip-hop
and pom. The team placed
second in pom against Floyd
Central and third in hip-hop
against Floyd Central and
Northrop. The following
weekend the girls had no
competitions, but performed
twice during the half time of
the boys’ basketball games
against Jasper and Tecumseh.
With a great outcome
of their first two competitions
the dance team hopes to keep
up the hard work and strive to
do better in their future competitions. When asked how
she thought the first two competitions went, Senior Erin
Schaefer says, “We were all very
proud of our performances for
the first competition. We came
out closer to Floyd Central than
ever before which was a huge
accomplishment. The second
competition turned out to be
even more rewarding after we
placed first in our kick routine.
Even though we did so well, we
know that we can’t stop working; therefore, we will be pushing ourselves at practice for future competitions.”
The girls will be performing at many other competitions during the season and will
also continue to perform during
the basketball home games. The
dance team has two regular competitions left in their season, followed by Regional and State
competitions at later dates. If
you have not yet seen the dance
team perform, make sure to
come out and support the girls at
any of their competitions or at
the last boys’basketball game!

Wrestling Review
By Rebekah Thomas
The Forest Park
Ranger Wrestling Team has
had an interesting start to the
season. With the new coach
Craig Recker and assistant
coach Dr. Darin Thomas, the
team has been blessed with
great leadership to look forward to for the rest of the
year, including four seniors to
lead the team with a total of
12 members.
There are many
weight divisions in which the
boys separate into. The boys
compete as the following:
Miles Recker 106 lbs., Cody
Flamion 113 lbs., Winston
Glenn 126 lbs., Phillip Rogier
132 lbs., Leighton Fleck 138
lbs., Keith Hurst 145 lbs.,
Tyler Recker 152 lbs., George
Allen 160 lbs., Casey Abell
170 lbs., Rhashaun Hurt 182
lbs., Justin Freyberger 220
lbs., and Jhett Bieker 285 lbs.
The seniors on the team this
year are Casey Abell, Jhett
Bieker, Rhashaun Hurt, and
George Allen. Along with the
coaches, these senior members provide great leadership
and determination for the other underclassmen on the team.
On November 25th
and 26th, the boys headed to
Mount Vernon for the Turkey
Classic. They finished with a
respectable place of fourth out
of eight teams. Senior Casey
Abell and Sophomore Cody
Flamion earned the title of
champion with records of 3-0.
Freshman Justin Freyburger
and Miles Recker both placed
Runner-Up with records of 21. Sophomore Winston Glenn
and Sophomore Phillip Rogier
received third place with records of 3-1, and Junior Keith
Hurst and Senior Rhashaun
Hurt got fourth place. Overall, the outcome of the tourney
was better than expected and
made the boys hopeful for the
season to continue.
On January 7th, the
wrestling team hosted a tourney at FP, the big money
maker for the wrestling program. Casey Abell, proving
to be the leader he is, was
undefeated with a record of 50. Winston Glenn also came
out with the 5-0 record. Cody
Flamion and Miles Recker
came out with one loss at the
end of the day with records of
4-1, while Phillip Rogier had
a record of 3-1. Overall, the
team came out with a record
of 2-3.
Forest Park would
like to wish the Wrestling
Rangers good luck at the PAC
Tourney on January 21st at
Heritage Hills. The wrestling
Sectional tourney will come
up soon after on January 28th
and will be held at Southridge
high school. On February 4th,
the Regionals will take place

January Boys’ Basketball Review
By Erin Schaefer
The boys’ basketball team lost two
games and won one in the Graber
Post Tourney over the holidays. In
their first game on Wednesday, the
Rangers stayed with Brownstown
Central for the first half. The boys
had to adjust to playing a game with
some new faces while Miles Leonard
sat out with a partially torn meniscus.
At the start of the second half, the
Braves took off on their scoring
streak, ending the game with a loss
for the Rangers, 67-45.
After suffering a loss on
Wednesday, the boys were ready to
come back for a win on Thursday.
Starting the game a little shaky, they
came back with a strong second half.
The Rangers pulled away from the
South Knox Spartans with a 48-35
win. In their last game of the tourney, the boys suffered a loss to Clay
City, ending with a score of 50-55.
January was packed with a
full schedule of regular season home
games, as well as away. On Friday,
January 6, the Rangers traveled to
class 1A number 2 ranked BarReeve. The Vikings kept a huge lead
over the Rangers the whole game and
ended the game with a score of 4454. The team was not happy with
their loss so they came back strong
on Saturday night to overcome the
Perry Central Commodores with a
close 56-49 win.
The following weekend the
Rangers traveled to South Spencer for
a matchup with the Rebels. Jake
Meyer, Ben Braunecker, and Miles
Leonard all had an outstanding game,
scoring double figures. The whole
team played well together and came
out on top with a 63-43 win, also
making them undefeated in the PAC.
On Saturday night, the boys played
North Posey at home. The Vikings
stayed with Rangers for the first quarter, but Forest Park tightened their
defense during the second quarter.
The boys did a great job hitting their
free throws in the last minutes of the
game, where their last sixteen points
were scored. They earned their second
win of the weekend against North
Posey with a score of 60-47.
On Friday, January 20, the
Rangers will play the Jasper Wildcat’s at home. The following night
will be against Tecumseh at home.
Homecoming will be held in between
the junior varsity and varsity games
on this night.
After struggling during the
beginning of the season, the Rangers
have started to get back on their feet
and have been winning more games.

Featured Vehicle: Don’t dodge it, Ram it!
By Kevin Brown
Von Buechler is the
proud owner of this month’s
featured vehicle. His slogan
is, “Don’t dodge it, Ram it!”
Von originally drove a 2004,
Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71,
5.3 liter V8. He switched
vehicles with his dad. His
dad drove a 2004 Dodge
Ram 1500 SLT, 5.7 liter V8
Hemi. They decided to
switch because Von’s dad
liked the leather in the
Chevy, and Von liked the
Dodge because it had more
power, looked better, and
had the best suspension
package you can buy standard on a truck.
The 1500 Silverado
has eighteen inch Helios
chrome rims that glimmer in
the sunshine while the SLT
Dodge has twenty inch polished steel rims. The rims on
the Chevy are wrapped in
Firestone tires, and the
Ram rides on Michelin
tires. The Dodge has
100,041 miles on it rather
than the Chevy which has
128,288 miles. Both vehicles have a spray on bed
liner, which is much nicer
and longer lasting than the
plastic bed liners. The
Chevy has a mean Flowmaster exhaust system,
which is the only thing he
misses about it. The Ram
was around 15,000 dollars
while the Silverado was
about 14,000 dollars. Both
of the trucks were purchased at Expressway
Dodge in Mount Vernon,
Indiana.
I asked Von where he travels in the Ram. Von stated,
“I go anywhere and every-
where. It’s a truck. It can
take the mud and dirt roads,
but she can also get up on
the asphalt.” The Dodge has
the seating capacity of six
and the Chevy can hold up to
5. As you can see, the Dodge
can hold one extra passenger. Von says that the Ram
is the more spacious of the
two vehicles. He admits the
Chevy doesn’t have a lot of
space to put your feet. Unfortunately with the rising
gas prices, the Dodge is the
worst choice of the two because it costs 85 dollars to fill
the tank from empty while
the Chevy only costs 78 dollars to fill. Both trucks have
the standard features such as
cruise control and power
locks and windows. The
Chevy has an added luxurious feature of leather. Von
says that he likes the power
that the Dodge puts
out, but he misses the
roar of the Chevy when
he would rev the engine
up.

Movie Review:
By Dakota Geyer
When Isabella Rossi
was a small child, there was an
accident. Her mother Maria Rossi killed three members of the
clergy while two priests and a
nun were performing an exorcism on her without the Vatican's permission. Since her
mother killed those three people
in the basement of her own
house she was sent overseas to
Rome. She was sent there because there is a mental hospital
there that is next to the Vatican.
Isabella grew up without a
mother because she was sent off
when she was only three.
Fortunately for Isabella,
being close to the Vatican gives
her an opportunity to meet two
priests, Ben and David, who
practiced unlicensed exorcisms
using a mix of medical science and
religious rituals to determine who is
simply mentally ill or who has an
actual demon inside them. Of
course, this combination of situations makes Isabella's situation good
for Michael, who for unknown reasons has decided to document the
whole process of Isabella going over
to Rome to film a documentary over
her mom and exorcisms. Of course,
the exorcism of demons is not as
easy as it looks in movies or on television, and is fraught with danger
for both the priests, the possessed,
and innocent people. The two priests
try to get the demons out of Maria
Rossi, but she has multiple demons
inside her. That means that one or
more of the demons can escape the
original body and go into someone
else’s body.
The Devil Inside provided me
with one of the most unique movie experiences I've ever had, and not in a good
way. I've seen some bad movies, and I've
seen some packed theaters full of disappointed audience members, but I have
never heard an entire theater groan like I
did at the end of this movie. Literally,
when the ending title popped up inviting
people to go to the film's official tie-in
website to learn more facts about the Rossi case, there was a unified, impressively
loud expression of disgust.
Until that abrupt and stupid ending, the movie itself was entertaining. It
was a standard exorcism movie, but
moved quickly and didn't skimp on the
creepy scenes, but then it ended with a
terrible advertisement for a website I will
never visit. There is nothing more unsatisfying than paying to watch a viral ad cam-

Just Dance 3
By Alexa Lange
Dance games show a perfect
example that videos games
can become more than just
sitting around and hitting
buttons with your thumbs.
You do not even need to be a
skilled dancer to play this
game. You just have to be
willing to dance the moves
shown before you and have
some fun. Like Just Dance
and Just Dance 2, it has
many great songs with some
amazing dance moves. If you
love dancing to fun music,
Just Dance 3 will be fantastically entertaining for you.
New to Just Dance 3
is four-person choreographed dancing, with dance
routines designed around for
four people at once. There
are some absolute classics in
this game including “This Is
Halloween”, which sees you
pretending to be a vampire, a
werewolf, a pumpkin-headed
marionette and a witch. The
two-player routines make a
return as well, though it's a
shame that only around a
quarter of the 40 tunes on
the disc have specific multiplayer routines. Doing a
proper four-person routine is
so much more fun than just
doing identical moves side by
side.
The Just Dance series has never been difficult
to pick up and play: you pick
a song to dance to, hold the
Wii remote in your right
hand, and mimic the actions of a virtual
dancer on the
screen. You're
awarded points
based on your
movements,
which are tracked
by the Wii remote, with each
being scored as
bad, OK, good, or
perfect. No matter
how many points
you rack up,
though, it's impossible to
fail out of a song. While this
makes the game much
more accessible for casual
players, it removes much of
the challenge, which makes
playing on your own a dull
experience for all but the
most dedicated dance fanatics.
Even if you're not
participating, it's hilarious to
watch your friends perform,
with onscreen lyrics that let
you sing along
too. While the
excellent track
list caters to
most tastes,
other songs
are available
to download
from the ingame store,
such as Anja's
"Baby Don't
Stop Now"
and Groove Century's "Soul
Searchin," for 250 Wii points
each.
If you are looking for
a fun time with your friends,
Just Dance 3 is the answer!
Everyone will have a blast
watching each other bust out
some great moves. I highly
encourage everyone to buy
the new Just Dance and learn
some great dance moves.

Jobs in High School
Kevin Brown
Having
stress is normal for all
teenagers. Between juggling school work, parents,
and extracurricular activities, teens have many
things on their plate. With
the added stress of your
parents making you get a
job to help pay for things
such as gas, insurance,
and the wants we would
like to have, it can have an
added toll on stress and
the amount of sleep you
receive. Having a job
could mean working during the week which cuts
into your school work.
Staying up late because
you had work until eight
or nine that night then
coming home to do homework, can really cut into
the sleep needed for teenagers. Thus, making it
harder for them to stay
awake for class the next
day and also making it
harder to concentrate on
what the teacher is explaining during class. This
puts a stress on you because it requires you to
put more time into study-
ing because you couldn’t
pay attention during
class that day. This
means your grades could
slip and then your parents would get onto you
for the declining grades,
which in turn, puts more
stress on you. Having a
job during high school
can add enormous
amounts of stress on
you; however, it also
gives you more freedom
to spend your money on
what you please.
The money you
earn from your job lets
you purchase new items
such as a new phone,
new shoes, or some nice
clothes. You can drive
where you want to because
you pay for your own gasoline. I asked Rebekah
Thomas what she thought
about working in high
school and she admitted,
“Even though it’s stressful
sometimes, having a job
gives me great feelings of
responsibility. I like being
able to pay for my own
things instead of asking my
parents, like I did when I
was younger.” She agrees
that having the extra money and not having to ask
your parents for money
gives you much more freedom to do what you please.
As I said, having a
job in high school can be
stressful, making it harder
to study for school and
could also make your
grades drop; however, it
also provides you with the
freedom to spend the money you make on things you
want to have, so that you
do not have to ask your
parents for the money to
buy things.

2012 Resolution Solutions
By Jayme Roos
Everyone would
probably agree that one of
the hardest things to do is
trying to stick to their new
year’s resolutions. By the
time you even think of your
resolutions the new year has
already begun and you have
most likely

about them.
However, if

There are

One main new year’s
resolution that most people
have for the new year is exercising. We all that know
that after a long day of

How to Become a Calmer Person
By Danielle Fromme
Set a limit to these techniques.
After all, you can be too extreme with them; you need
balance to make it work. Take
a piece of paper and a pen and
write the techniques down.
Then write down what causes

things you can’t fix. Set up a
few cases that will void this

may make you lose your job if
not handled promptly. Or, if it
is a family problem, that
would cause complications.
Being calm is important, but
not to the extent of losing
your job, or your family. Certain things require urgency
and that is why we need these
guidelines to refer to. Being
calm doesn’t mean you have
to slow down completely.
You still can be aggressively

So let it go, stop trying to fix it.
Minimize the damage and go on
with your life. A rock falling
will hurt you less if you catch it

will hurt more if you catch it

I have always been a calm person, but at times, I can’t help

wanted to find out how to be
calm all the time, even in those
stressful situations. One way to
stay as cool as a cucumber is to

Fast Food: The Most Dangerous Meal
Erin Schaefer
In today’s world, fast food has
become a prominent fix for our
busy schedules. The fact that it
is both relatively cheap and
tastes good is also appealing to
us. However, as we have heard
over and over, the choices that
are offered at fast food restaurants can be extremely hazardous to not only our short-term,
but as well as our long-term
health. One of the easiest ways
to stay healthy is to avoid going
through the drive-thru, even if
you are in a hurry.
Over one billion people around the world are now
considered overweight. The
major driving force behind
childhood obesity, fast food is
the source of a number of childhood diseases. Fast food packs
tons of calories, fat, cholesterol,
salt, and sugar into the food and
obviously has much less vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients than a home-cooked meal.
If a child eats fast food too often, they are at high risk for
developing type 2 diabetes,
asthma, and liver disease. Each
time one eats this food, he or
she is put at an even greater risk
for these diseases than before.
Along with these diseases that
could set in during childhood,
there are a few more that one
could be at risk for during adulthood as well. An unhealthy diet
during any point in one’s life
can lead to stroke, cancer, or
cardiovascular disease.
At first, fast food
restaurants usually tried to
target low-income neighborhoods because they don’t normally have markets or access
to fresh produce. However, as
they learned that they could
gain business in large cities,
the restaurants spread. Obesity has become an epidemic in
the United States, and it is
mainly because people do not
take the time to prepare
healthy meals.
Restaurants also try
to make the large-sized meals
look more appealing. Some
even give incentives for buying the largest sizes. When
one purchases these, the individual is over-eating, which
eventually leads to obesity.
Even when one eats portionsized meals at these fast food
restaurants, the amount of unhealthy carcinogens that is consumed is still harmful to the
body.
Especially in one’s
younger years, it is important to
make healthy eating decisions
because it will affect not only
your health at the current time,
but also as one grows older. The
fact that it is so unhealthy should
be the number one reason for
individuals to avoid fast food
restaurants. When you are
tempted to stop at the drive-thru,
think about your health and
guide yourself to a healthier
meal.

Odd February Holidays and Traditions
By Danielle Fromme
We all know the traditional holidays of certain months, but
what about the other, lessrecognized holidays? I found
some odd and neglected holidays that you could celebrate
this February.
One such holiday is Singles
Awareness Day, which is always February 15th. Singles
Awareness Day is for those who
are unattached and without a
significant other. Valentine's
Day, celebrates love and romance for those currently in a
relationship. However, if you
are without a significant other,
you may feel left out, which
makes Valentine's Day depressing. So, the day after is yours.
On Singles Awareness day, Singles get together for a chance to
meet others, give each other
gifts, and to enjoy being unattached. The origin of Singles
Awareness Day can be traced
back to Dustin Barnes from
Mississippi State University as
the creator of this day. Yes,
Dustin was single at the time.
Northern Hemisphere HoodieHoo Day on February 20 is usually a hoot. On this day, people
go out at noon, wave their hands
over their heads and chant
"Hoodie-Hoo". It is meant to
chase winter away and bring in
spring. Did you know that
Hoodie Hoo Day is a copyright-
ed holiday? It was created by
the pleasant people at Wellcat.com.
Of course, this year is a leap
year, so those of you out there
who were born on a February
29 will finally be able to celebrate on your actual birthday.
Just how many of us are celebrating our birthday on Leap
Day? Only about one in 1461
people, so if you were born on
this day, consider yourself
very, very special. Why do we
need an extra day? The earth
rotates around the sun once
every 365 and about 1/4 days.
So, by adding an extra day
every four years, we get closer
to keeping the calendar consistent with the earth's annual
trip around the sun. And to be
very precise, the earth orbits
the sun every 365.242190
days. So, on years ending in
"00", (except those not divisible by 400) we skip Leap
Year and Leap Day. With all
that fancy calculating out of
the way, let's just celebrate the
day. Did you know that there
are occasional "Leap Seconds"? We will spare you the
detail on those.
How can I forget Valentine’s
Day? There are some odd
traditions on this lovey day. In
Japan, women are expected to
give chocolate and other gifts to
men on Valentine's Day. This
tradition was started as a marketing campaign by Japanese chocolate companies. Also, in Wales,
an intricately carved "love
spoon" is a traditional Valentine's Day gift. Pet owners even
sometimes give valentine’s gifts
to their pets!
