Hello Volunteers,
We’ve made it through K-Days and now we look forward to our fall events season. The Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) and
Farmfair International (FFI) will be upon us before we know it! We want to extend our sincere gratitude to those who
donated their time to K-Days and the Canadian Derby—you play a huge role in ensuring our events are a success!
As the days get shorter, fall is shaping up to be a busy season at Northlands. Rexall Place will see the arrival of such greatly
anticipated concerts as Paul Brandt and Dean Brody, The Who, Jason Aldean, Madonna and Kelly Clarkson. Throughout
the upcoming months, the Edmonton EXPO Centre will be bustling with the Home Renovation Show, Edmonton Comic
& Entertainment Expo, the Edmonton Fall Home Show and more! At Northlands Park Racetrack & Casino, this year’s
successful thoroughbred season is slated to wrap up on October 24.
As a very busy summer ends at Northlands and throughout Edmonton, we hope that you are able to take some time to
relax. Fall holds the excitement of FFI and the CFR—two events where our western heritage comes alive and is celebrated
in Edmonton for five days. We’re looking forward to having you join us in November for the 42nd edition of both events

K-DAYS WRAP-UP
From July 17-26, Northlands brought music, rides, food and shopping to our city. With more than 160 acres of indoor and
outdoor play space, 785,290 fairgoers celebrated their summer at K-Days.
K-Days 2015 was kicked off with the downtown parade on July 17. The rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the spectators
who braved the soggy start to celebrate our Parade Marshals, Edmonton’s first responders, and the local heroes who were
nominated to serve as our Honorary Parade Marshals. An estimated 171,000 viewers tuned in to Global Edmonton to catch
the two-hour broadcast.
K-Days 2015 also brought new opportunities for volunteers. This year’s feature pavilion (Adrenaline Rush) included a new
attraction called Zorb Adventure—an exhilarating free activity where the volunteers involved certainly got a great physical
workout helping guests in and out of the balls and then sending them on their way around the course. It was a dusty job but
everyone loved it, including Ed Pietsch and Bob Haudenschild. Kids Town saw new areas for our guests this year, including
inflatable bowling and human foosball where Estella Flueck certainly enjoyed engaging with the younger fairgoers. The
President’s Choice SuperDogs made their return to K-Days in 2015 and was an enormous success. It was also the first
schedule to be filled up with volunteers. Hall D is always a hit with volunteers and fairgoers alike but to be able to meet and
greet the talented dogs at the end of the show was certainly a highlight for all involved.
On the Northlands grounds, fairgoers enjoyed more than 50 live shows on the K-Days North Stage, 48 midway rides, 25 new
and outrageous culinary creations, 11 headliners on the K-Days South Stage presented by TD, eight indoor halls filled with
attractions and one great time. As a community-service organization, we’re committed to giving back to the community
through major events such as K-Days. Throughout the ten days of K-Days, dozens of charities and community organizations
were supported with an investment of more than $344,000.

K-DAYS IN THE COMMUNITY
K-Days 50/50: In its second year, the K-Days 50/50 raised $88,640 in support of youth development and agriculture
education programs.
Monday Morning Magic: At the 38th annual Monday Morning Magic, more than 550 children with special needs and their
families enjoyed an exclusive visit to K-Days with local heroes, athletes and celebrities at their side!
Food Bank Days: This year, every day was Food Bank Day at K-Days. Through the collection of non-perishable Food Bank
donations at the north, east and south gates, we were able to collect over 500 kg of food for Edmonton’s Food Bank.
Monster Burger: Back for the first time since 2011, 15 Monster Burgers were sold through the 10 days of K-Days. Through
these sales, 33 lbs. of beef was donated to Edmonton’s Food Bank.
Kids Up Front: A total of 12,000 K-Days gate admissions were donated to Kids Up Front, an organization that provides tickets
to children who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend K-Days.
Kiwanis Slide: We were proud to once again support Kiwanis, a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the
world. Through the operation of the giant slide at K-Days, Kiwanis has generated more than $80,000 to help them achieve
their mission.
KidsSport Edmonton: Kick, Shoot or Throw for Kids in support of KidSport Edmonton raised a total of $6,918, meaning more
children in the community can participate in organized sports.
Make-A-Wish: Ten Make-A-Wish children participated in the daily K-Days on-site parade and more than 40 Ride-All-Day
passes were donated to Make-A-Wish children and their families.

I just wanted to send a quick note to you guys about the mini parade volunteers.
They have been absolutely amazing. Some of them are extremely involved, they are quick thinkers if we run into any issues
and their enthusiasm is off the charts.

Working with each one of them was amazing and so much fun! We snapped some pictures. As you will see Darlene had some
pretty great hoola hoop moves, Marjorie was sporting some awesome glasses and Frank and I were in the mix of silliness.

All though it was very hot outside, everyone kept within the Family Day spirit with huge smiles on their faces. We are very
fortunate to have our volunteers; I could not have done family day without them today!
I extended my thanks to each as they left for the day! I hope they had a great time too and looking forward to have an
opportunity to work them again soon.

OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW
K-Days saw the unveiling of a new uniform for volunteers! We had wonderful comments
about the color and style and functional jacket. Then came the questions about what to
do with the outgoing, light blue and white golf shirt. We are happy to advise that we will
be having a collection of those golf shirts and any other former volunteer uniform you may
have from Northlands. The items will be collected November 6th during the Canadian
Finals Rodeo/Farmfair International Kick Off and again at the Volunteer Center during
Canadian Finals Rodeo/Farmfair International. We are pleased to advise that the old items
will then be given to the Salvation Army who send them off shore. Round up those items
and have them handy to bring in!

I stopped to talk to them because I was in on their interview
process and noticed that they looked a bit overwhelmed. I wanted
to welcome them to their first volunteer experience and answer
any questions they had.

There were close to 40 people signed up for the first week of the
University of Alberta Hospital’s Riverbend Initiative, so I thought
that was a great start to the program. When they came to pick up
their veggie bags they were excited and impressed. There were
many people that were very interested in knowing more about the
program (approx. 30-40). We gave them the website to get more
info and we also asked Riverbend Gardens to provide pamphlets
and signs to inform people about the program for this coming
week. Quite a few people stopped by and wanted to purchase the
veggie bags that were sitting on the counter for pick-up.
All in all, I think the program will really take off as the weeks go by...

NORTHLANDS HISTORY
As a 136 year old organization, we have many stories to tell. Moving forward, each edition
of Northlands Live will include a brief excerpt from the pages of Edmonton Exhibition The First Hundred Years by Tony Cashman, a Northlands history publication. We hope you
enjoy the trip down memory lane with this second article!
WAR AND BUST
By the time the high court settled the matter, all the factors in the human condition had
boiled up and exploded to create the First World War. The booster spirit, which had made
Edmonton’s square mileage second only to Chicago’s, suffered quick deflation. Only five
weeks after the armies marched the exhibition was driven to “A Retrenchment Plan to save
$6,267.” Among other economies, popular grounds superintendent Dave Stewart was let
go and manager Stark had to move into Stewart’s cottage.
The capitalists who had been lavishing on Edmonton packing plants and brick buildings,
and subdivisions with poetic names, suddenly disappeared. About the only foreign
entrepreneur who retained faith in the city was Lynn Welcher of Brooklyn, New York, who favoured us with a roller coaster
and tunnel of love.
Mr.Welcher’s amusements went up in 1915 along the south fence, half on the exhibition grounds, half in Borden Park. During
fair week, the association got 15 percent of the gross, which was welcome. By 1916, when total revenues dropped to $68,000,
$481 came from thrill seekers who paid to experience the sharp dips and turns of the permanent rollercoaster, and couples
who floated through the dark passages of the tunnel on magnetically pulled boats, to cling to each other in fear when ghosts
and skeletons loomed out of the Stygian void.
CANADIAN DERBY WRAP-UP
The 86th Canadian Derby took place at Northlands Park Racetrack & Casino on August 15 with 40 volunteers taking on a variety
of tasks. The day had mixed weather but it did not dampen the spirits of those who drove shuttles, manned entrances and
helped at the Simons fashion show, as well as various tents. A few of the ladies even wore jaunty headwear to honour the day!
HOLD ON TO YOUR HAT DERBY 2015:
A MEMORY FROM VOLUNTEER JEAN

I would like to tell you about my day at the Canadian Derby.
It was themed “Hold on to your hats!”and I could not hold
onto mine for the day and this is my story…..
I am a hat wearer and love hats and even though I have
about 25 there was not one that was good enough for the
Canadian Derby, so Barb (my daughter) and I made two
beautiful red and white derby hats. We made one for me, as
I was volunteering at the Marketplace as an ambassador for
Northlands, and one for a friend. I was volunteering at the
Simons booth telling people about their contest. All you had
to do was have your picture taken with your hat and outfit
and if you were one of the top ten finalists you could win a
Simons gift certificate. As I was helping I was approached by
two ladies who wanted to have their picture taken, but one
was without a hat. She was dressed all in red and white from
her dress, shoes, and purse all that was missing was a hat so
she asked me if she could borrow my hat and have a picture
taken wearing it as it was the perfect color for her outfit, I
said no problem. She had her picture taken and the finalists
were to be announced at 3 p.m. To my surprise, the lady
sought me out and told me she was one of the ten finalist for
the Simons hat contest and asked me if she could borrow the
hat once again I said of course, then the lady said “You know
what, why don’t I just buy it from you and then I would not
have to worry about returning it?” I told her the cost and she
paid me double as I had no change. She was very happy with
it, so she went on her way with my hat on her head and I had
money in my pocket we were both happy but now I had to
redo my hair… haha …
So now I will have to make another one for next year and
can’t wait … even though it was cold I had a great time I look
forward to working the Derby 2016.

HOLIDAY HAMPER PROGRAM BY JCI EDMONTON
The Holiday Hamper Program is the highlight event of the year for
JCI Edmonton and this project has been recognized nationally by
JCI Canada as an outstanding initiative.
This annual event has been creating positive change in our
community for over 10 years!
Northlands staff have been participating in this project for
several years, and with the suggestion of the Volunteer Advisory
Committee our generous volunteers are asked to participate to
help fill two hampers. The turkey and roasting pan are supplied
and we need your donation of items listed below.
We will also be accepting JCI Hamper item donations November
6th during the Canadian Finals Rodeo/Farmfair International Kick
Off. You may also bring donations to the volunteer check-in centre
during Farmfair International and Canadian Finals Rodeo. Below is
a list of items that are acceptable to donate. Every item donated
will bring us one step closer to help making a better Christmas for
families across our city.

Northlands Remembers
On behalf of all Northlands volunteers and the Volunteers Services team we send our sincere sympathy to volunteer
Joan Higgins, whose husband passed away on Sunday, August 2.
We also wish to extend sympathy to the family of longtime volunteer Bernice Pagee. Bernice had
graciously volunteered her time to us for ten years. She lost her two year battle with cancer on
Sunday, July 5.
VOLUNTEER PROFILE: DOUG & SHARON WICKHAM
Of the more than 1,100 Northlands volunteers, there are two
individuals who excel at a rather unique sport. Believe it or not,
Doug and Sharon Wickham are mounted shooters. Mounted
shooting is the prefect marksmanship and equestrian hybrid. Not
only do you have to shoot the target balloons, but you have to do
it while controlling a horse running at full speed. This sport is one
where the spirit of the Wild West truly shines and is certainly not for
the faint of heart.
“The event is modeled after the 1800s so you are in fact taking a
step back in time,” explains Doug. “We all shoot 45 caliber Colts
as they did in the old west. It’s also the fastest growing equestrian
event in North America.”
Doug and Sharon have been Northlands volunteers for 25 and 22 years respectively and it was only about a year ago they took
their infamous first ride through the mounted shooting course. “I was announcing the provincial finals for mounted shooting
and started asking questions and then we went to a clinic with our horses and got hooked,” explains Doug. For only being
involved in mounted shooting for a year, Sharon already has a championship buckle that she won in Regina last November.
Cleary, they’re both very passionate about mounted shooting. “There are many things that Sharon and I enjoy about shooting,
but the ones that stand for out us have to be the speed of shooting off horseback; it’s a very high-paced event, and the people
involved in the sport; everyone will help you, from world champions on down,” says Doug.
Just like in any sport, Doug says that the trick to mounted shooting is practice. “The trick to shooting on horseback is timing and
lots of practice. As you practice you learn from others but it still comes from what you have put into it.”

NORTHLANDS STORE
Have you heard the news that we have opened up our very own store? Located inside the Edmonton EXPO Centre beside
the food court, the Northlands Store will be selling branded clothing and merchandise along with essentials including sun
screen, lip balm, ponchos and more! Northlands volunteers will receive a 50 per cent discount on all items inside the store,
so stock up today!
NORTHLANDS FOOD TRUCK
We’re putting Alberta on the menu and taking it to the street. On July 10, we launched our very own food truck! Truck 1879,
named in honour of the year Northlands was founded as an agricultural society, shines the light on Alberta made food. A
minimum of 75 per cent of all ingredients are from Alberta- thus helping to support local food producers and suppliers.
This means that Truck 1879 offerings will include ingredients grown or raised in Alberta, processed in Alberta and made by
Alberta businesses.
The menu will include gourmet versions of traditional favourites such as duck fat garlic frites and short rib burgers, as well as
a few of Truck 1879’s own creations including the Northlands bacon banh mi. Let your stomach rest assured that every dish
from Truck 1879 will have local flavours. You’ll find Truck 1879 at Northlands events throughout the summer and early fall.

VOLUNTEER ADVISORY COMMITTEE UPDATE
The Volunteer Advisory Committee met on July 13 to discuss topics such as Destination K-Days and the new volunteer
uniforms. This was the last meeting for this particular set of committee members who formed in 2013. The Chair of the Advisory
Committee, Mahlon Weir, thanked the committee for their contribution for the past two years. We look forward to introducing
the new committee in our October newsletter.
WHAT VOLUNTEERS WERE INVOLVED IN RECENTLY
Northlands volunteers supported the 2015 FIBA Americas Women’s Basketball Championship from August 9–16, taking
place at the Saville Community Sports Centre helping with accreditation, information booths and ticketing. This event
produced qualifying teams for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Closer to home, we were proud to announce our participation in a
wonderful agricultural event—the province’s 3rd annual Alberta Open Farm Days. On Sunday, August 23, guests had the
opportunity to learn where their food comes from through free and ticketed events that demonstrated the vibrancy of
the Alberta agriculture industry at Northlands Urban Farm. Volunteers helped with bus tours, farm tours, registration and
shuttles. This was a unique opportunity for us and our versatile volunteers.

CORRECTIONS
We would like to take the opportunity to make the following corrections from the June 2015 Newsletter.
• On the right hand side of page 2, under “30 Years” of service, we apologize and would like to recognize that we had
misplaced the abbreviation C.M. (Congregatio Missionis) for Don Clarke’s name. It should have read “Don Clarke C.M.”
• On the bottom of page 3, under the “Soaring Out of the Gate Award” we apologize and would like correct the spelling
error for winner Odette Dionne.
• On page 6 in the article about Northlands History, it should have stated that the book “Edmonton Exhibition the First
Hundred Years” is written by Tony Cashman, not Tom Cashman.
• On page 2, Julie Lupul and her husband Allen Lupul were missing from the 20 Years of Service photo, as they were out of
