Meeting:

One of the best pieces of wisdom that I have ever heard
came from a very old Benedictine monk, who stated
“no matter what… keep reading.” He knew something
wonderful. My favorite authors are Dante, James Joyce
and Charles Dickens. They were all products of their
time and wrote deeply in conveying spiritual realities,
social concerns and romance.
One of my favorite moments in all of literature comes in the narrative
by Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol.” The moment is when
Scrooge is taken to the home of his underpaid-overworked
employee; Bob Cratchet. During this moment he sees the character
Tiny Tim, who is sickly. This is a turning point in the life of Scrooge.
What does he see in Tiny Tim? Himself! Scrooge sees the
characteristics of who and what he really wants to be and truly who he
is. He also realizes that in order for Tiny Tim to become an adult,
Scrooge himself, must become more childlike. In essence in order
for the child to live, Scrooge must become fully alive.
The narrative is packed with so many different meanings. But for us
today, I use this brief excerpt to convey that we are not random
incidents in each other’s lives, but rather we are carefully woven
because God knows what is best. In Matthew 18 Jesus uses the
analogy of becoming like children. He does not use the word
juvenile but rather the words child. A child knows they are loved and
therefore can love, and the child knows there is no place like home.
For us, in our growing up, we are called to grow down (that does not
mean immaturity). Each moment of our lives, especially our
relationships we are called to identify with what Jesus made us the
first time he touched our lives (baptism). He made us sons and
daughters of a God of love. Faith is “the divine virtue by which we
believe the truths of God.” That is absolutely the definition, but
there is more to it than that.
If we are called to believe in HIM, aren’t we also called then to
accept what HE knows and loves about us? Very often when we say
that we struggle with faith, we are struggling with something else. It is
fair to say that often it is not that we struggle with believing in HIM,
but rather accepting that we are called “from love, for love.” If we
know we are loved and called to love, then our lives change.
Especially how we relate to one another and how we accept the
sacraments. Take Confession for example. If we accept and try to
live as children who are so valued and loved, then our confessions
take on a deeper tone. It is no longer about our sins (though we must
confess them) it becomes about how we did an act that is not good
enough for us. Confession is not about the wrong we have done but
rather about the fact that we have not accepted how good we have
been created and redeemed to be. Sin is not good enough for us.
God’s love is our beginning, our path and through cooperation with
HIM, our end.
It is an amazing gift to be a priest and now to serve, pray with and
minister to the family of St. Gertrude’s. We thank Fr. Stephen
Brigandi for his witness and pray for continued blessings upon him.
Please pray for me, as I pray for you.

2016 Catholic Ministries Appeal
One Faith, Family, Community
‘Put on Christ!’ in your life and you will find a friend in whom you can always trust; ‘put on Christ’ and you
will see the wings of hope spreading and letting you journey with joy
towards the future.”
- Pope Francis
Dear Parishioners:
As Catholics, we all hold dear the responsibility of bringing our young people into our family of faith and guiding them on a
lifelong journey with Christ.
One opportunity to nurture their faith is by supporting the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Every day, young people on our college
campuses are actively committing to their faith and living lives filled with joyful service. Consider Susan, a student at Stony
Brook University, who became involved in Campus Ministry immediately following the start of her freshman year.
“Having a family of friends here at Stony Brook
University is so important to me. I grew up in a very
small town and coming to a big school I didn’t get that
sense of community anywhere else but in Campus
Ministry. God is first and being surrounded by people
that feel the same way encourages you and helps you
through all your troubles.”
More than 3,000 young people a month participate in Campus Ministry Programs in our Diocese.
The Catholic Ministries Appeal is also important for so many other ministries and programs that involve our children. Are you
aware that collectively parish-based religious education programs serve more than 110,000 of our young people in public
schools? Similarly, youth and young adult ministry programs serve more than 5,000 each month.
Your support helps to inspire young adults to journey together as they continue to find Christ in their lives.
Please know that I thank you most sincerely for your consideration of this special request to make a gift to the 2016 Catholic
Ministries Appeal. Please know that no gift is too small and every gift makes a difference in the lives of our young people - the
now and the future of our Catholic Church.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Regan

The IRA Charitable Rollover
is back and is now
permanent!
What’s called a rollover is actually a “qualified charitable distribution” that can be made
to our Parish.
If…
You are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date you make your gift
Your IRA is a traditional or Roth
You don’t exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions
You will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New
York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution
(RMD).
The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified
charitable distribution". In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form.
VERY IMPORTANT!! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive
the money first then you’ll be taxed on it like any other distribution.
Example: Mrs. Connors, age 76, has $125,000 in a traditional IRA and would like to contribute
$5,000 to her Parish in 2016. Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover opportunity, she directs
the custodian of her IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2016 directly to the
Parish as a 2016 gift. She will not be subject to income tax on her $5,000 qualified charitable
distribution.
This information is not intended and should not be construed as legal, tax or investment advice. For such advice, please consult an attorney,
tax advisor or investment professional.
Wills and Bequests have the power to impact future generations. It’s so easy to
include our Parish in your Will and still provide for loved ones. You may be able to make a simple bequest
by adding the following language:
“I give and bequeath the sum of $ _________ (or the % of), to be used for the general
program of St. Gertrude Parish, a Catholic Church in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.”
Ensure the future vitality of our Parish with your charitable
bequest or consider other Estate Planning options,
such as designating our Parish as beneficiary of a
life insurance policy or an IRA account.

SUMMER WORKSHOP – CHURCH OF MERCY AND A GOSPEL OF JOY! The
Spirituality of Pope Francis
The papacy of Pope Francis and the vision he has shared since his election have been remarkable and indeed electrifying to many.
His papacy has been marked by many “firsts.” Not least among these, he is the first Jesuit pope and the first pope to choose the
name Francis. His words and example have become an inspiration to believers and non-believers alike. This workshop will
examine the first three years of his papacy and what biographer John Allen has called, “The Francis Miracle.” In the course of
the week, we will discuss the Franciscan and Ignatian influences on his spirituality together with an analysis of his writings,
interviews, and homilies with a particular focus on the themes of mercy and joy.
