WHO WAS YURI GAGARIN?
Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was a
Soviet pilot and cosmonaut.
Vostok space-craft
He was the first man to
complete one orbit of
the Earth in his spacecraft “Vostok I” on 12th
April 1961.
EARLY LIFE
Yuri Gagarin was born in
the village of Klushino near
Gzhatsk, on 9th March
1934. A German officer,
during World War II, took
over their house. In 1946,
the family moved to
Gzhatsk .
CAREER
When he was young he
began to be interested in
planets and Space.
Gagarin was selected to
attend the Technical
High School in Saratov.
In 1955 he entered the
Orenburg Pilot's School.
Then he became a
Lieutenant of the Soviet
Air Force.
SELECTION
In 1960 Yuri Gagarin
was chosen, with 19
other pilots, for the
Soviet space
programme.
Then, after selections
and a hard training
Gagarin was chosen to
be the first man to
travel into the Space.
VOSTOK I
On 12th April 1961, aboard
the Vostok I, Gagarin
successfully completed one
orbit of the Earth. His call
sign was Kedr.
HONOURS
After the mission,
Gagarin became a
worldwide celebrity. He
visited Italy, Germany,
Canada, Brazil, Japan,
Great Britain and
Finland to promote the
Soviet Union's
accomplishment.
HONOURS 2
In 1962, he became a
deputy at the Supreme
Soviet of the Soviet Union
and training director of
the Star City cosmonaut
training base, but maybe
the most important
honour was the “Hero of
the Soviet Union” honour,
the nation's highest award.
DEATH
On 27th March 1968,
during a routine training
flight from Chkalovsky
Air Base, he and a flight
instructor Vladimir
Seryog died in a MiG15UTI crash near the town
of Kirzhach.
CURIOSITIES
Gagarin married Valentina Goryacheva in
1957, with whom he had two children.
During his flight in the Space
Gagarin said:
