ESIDENTS in Subang jaya
will be prepared to face all
kinds of everything.
They would be educated on disaster preparedness for hazards
that could impact their neighbourhoods.
Besides, they would also be
trained in basic disaster response
skills, such as fire safety, light
search and rescue, team organisation and medical aid,
Subangjaya Municipal Council
(MPSjJ president Datuk Asmawi
Kasbi said there was a need to
equip residents with basic skills
in medical aid and enable them
to deal with emergency situations like an outbreak of fire and
other disasters.
"Giving our residents free
training and hands-on experience in basic disaster response
skills will help create confident
communities.
"Once the people are equipped
with such skills, then they would
know how to act and what to do
when such s'ituations arise,
"The trained residents can
then assist others in their neighbourhood or workplace if professional responders are not immediately available to help," he
said.
Asmawi added that the idea to
have the SubangJaya Community
ResponseTeam would take some
time to materialise.
Earlier, Asmawi gave out certificates to 10 MPSJ staff who
completed a two-week disaster
response skills training.
He was glad the MPSJ's
Emergency Response Team (ERT)
had grown from 13 to 23 and
would be able to complement
the SubangJaya's Fire and Rescue
Department.
"We have trained our staff
from various departments since
200S, after the floods that affected Taman Tun Dr. Ismail.
"Out of the 23 staff, three are
women," he said.
The three women are Marhaini
Mohd Bashri, 29, Umi Kalsum
Rahman, 30 and Nurul Farah
Ewani Burhan, 24.
Asmawi also said MPSj was
preparing a working paper on
the Emergency Response Unit
where the council plans to provide staff with a risk allowance,
as the job entails dangerous situations.
MPSJ staff Mohd Azdi Maulud
from the public relations department was chosen as the best ERT
personnel in the training exercise and he received a certificate
in recognition of his efforts.
Also present at the event were
Subang Jaya's SS17 Fire and
Rescue Department chief Mohd
Khairi Daud and SubangJaya district police chief Asst Com Zainal
Rashid Abu Bakar.

THECleanZoneCampaignhas been
successfully implemented for the
2009/2010 period, which is why
the Selangor government is continuing the programme, said state
localgovernment committeechairman RonnieLiu.
Liu said the campaign had also
received encouraging response
from residents' committees, nongovernmental organisations, local
agenciesand companiesthat sponsored the programme.
"The local community is given
exposure on how to care for their
environment and health.
'The zones that have, been selected for the programme have to be
kept clean even after the campaign," Liu told Yap Ee Wah (BN-Sg
Pelek) who wanted to knowwhether the programme had achieved its
objectives.
Liu said this year's campaign
started in October last year.
Asked about the cost of buying
garbage bins, Liu said it was up to
the zone committees and local councils to decide on the-sizeand number
needed, as the state government's
directive was only that the garbage
bins had to be provided.
"The state government has allocated RM1.2mil to be distributed
among the 12 local councils to
implement
the Clean Zone
Campaign," he said.
"The allocation breakdown for
the councils includes RM24,750 for
Shah Alam, RM33,000 for Petaling
