“I’ve been working out and eating healthy for the last
few weeks but I can’t seem to get rid of this last bit of
fat, how else can I lose more weight?” - Lisa
Good Question Lisa! Well the first thing you need to take a look at is your diet to
make sure you’re getting an adequate amount of calories to make sure your body can
handle what you’re asking it to do. I tend to see a lot of people under-eating when
trying to lose weight, just as there are people who don’t eat enough in order to gain
weight. You must eat accordingly to your goals. There is a lot of misinformation out
there on “the streets,” so please make sure you get with a professional that can guide
you in the right direction appropriately.
Secondly, staying hydrated is a big component of losing weight and just staying in top
physical/mental well-being. Water has so many great health benefits for the body, and we
ultimately will not survive without it. How could we ask our bodies/muscles to perform
such feats of physical activity without enough of it? Hence why we start feeling more energetic when we drink it and our performance is highly increased across the board. The
Institute of Medicine’s general guidelines for water intake recommends women consume
a total of 91 ounces per day – from all food and beverages combined. For men, it’s about
125 ounces a day. Depending on your diet, about 20% of the water you consume comes
from your food. Summer is also right around the corner, so drink up!
Lastly, I would highly suggest monitoring your cardiovascular program a little
more closely. Keep in mind, in order to lose one pound of fat you must have a deficit
of 3,500 calories, which comes from physical activity(calories out), and maintaining
a balanced weight loss meal plan(calories in). Your caloric deficit is one of the main
determinants of how much fat you lose. If you want to drop weight quicker, you
might be able to lower your daily caloric intake by 250 calories. It is important to
understand that the body does not want to burn a lot of fat off too quickly. If you
rush the fat-loss process, you can end up losing some of your hard earned muscle.
Also, adding in an extra workout once or twice a week will help speed things up.
Just be careful not to over-train! This is another solid reason to work with a professional if you’re unsure of what to do. Once you get this down, consistency comes
next and is absolutely crucial if you want to succeed in your journey!

Dr. Paul V. Minotty, founder of New Vision Eye Center, known for offering
patients the latest technological advances in eye care, is excelling once again. Dr.
Minotty and Dr. Stephen M. Tate are pleased to announce the final piece of the Cataract Refractive Suite puzzle with the addition of the VERION Image Guided system.
New Vision Eye Center is honored to be the first facility on the East Coast of Florida
to offer this advanced technology.
The VERION Image Guided System tracks your eye from the beginning to the
end of your cataract surgery, adding more accuracy and precision throughout the
process. During the planning stage for cataract surgery, the VERION system takes a
high-resolution image of a patient’s eye. It then maps out each eye’s unique iris and
scleral details, as well as the pupil size and centration. This ‘fingerprint of the eye,’
helps the surgeon create an optimized surgical plan that guides him through the
procedure on the day of surgery. This ensures accurate centering and positioning
of the intraocular lens and laser incisions during surgery. The VERION features
software that assists the surgeon with astigmatism correction and eliminates the need
to manually mark the eye.
Dr. Minotty stated, “Cataract surgery has come a long way. From the use of
hand-held blades to the advancement of bladeless laser technology and now, more
recently, to advancements in operating microscopes and software. These advances in
cataract surgery offer safer, more accurate and more predictable vision outcomes. By
the VERION, patients have the most advanced, fully computer-guided technology
possible for their cataract surgery.”
Already in operation at The Cataract Institute at New Vision Eye Center are
the other pieces of the Cataract Refractive Suite: The LenSx Laser, The LuxOR
Ophthalmic Microscope and The CENTURION Vision System, which all work
seamlessly with the new VERION.
Dr. Minotty and Dr. Tate have performed over 50,000 successful cataract surgeries.
Rest assured they offer unparalleled expertise not only on the Treasure Coast but
across the nation. Drs. Minotty and Tate, along with Dr. Roger Meyer, Dr. David
O’Brien, and Dr. Paul Winslow, III look forward to assisting you with all of your eye
care needs. Visit their website at www.newvisioneyecenter.com or call 772-257-8700

VOLUME 123 • COMPLIMENTARY
Do you find yourself catching the seasonal “bug” every
season or having headaches more often and you just chalk
it up as normal? If so, your body could be trying to tell you
something and you aren’t paying attention.
Our bodies have been sending us lots of messages since
we were born to act upon; such as thirst, hunger, temperature, stress, fear, and the need for sleep. As we get older,
smarter and busier though we don’t seem to listen as well
to what our bodies are telling us. We hear this statement a
lot- “Listen to your body!” - What does this mean? We
seem to multi-task more, sleep less, and ignore messages of
stress. So this summer I am taking a vacation from surround
– sound -the new era of cell phones, tweeting, texting, and
Instagram and heading back to me. Wow, that sounds selfcentered! By golly, I think that’s a worthy journey.
Listening to one’s body requires taking a break from external things like how we look, where we need to go, and
daily to-do lists. It requires making time for checking in with
how we feel. Start with the easy stuff like deep breathing
and appreciating the local beauty and fresh air. With some
thought and listening I know I can even upgrade my food
choices to more mindful ones.
Accompany me if you would like. Pack lightly- we just
need a few things, leave behind the urge to pack more than
you need. The itinerary is stress-free. There is time for resting, deep breathing, and sightseeing the local beauty around
us. We will carry-on conversations and “check “the tweets
and texts baggage.

Spotlight on Sebastian’s
Emergency Services
Sometimes being in the right place at the right time means
everything and for John Coard, that was truly the case the
morning of April 3rd. While out and about in Sebastian,
John experienced indigestion, a dull achiness in his chest
and what felt like muscle soreness in his right arm. At
first he told his wife, Susan, that he wanted to go home
and lie down because he just wasn’t feeling right but
quickly changed his mind and Susan drove directly to
Sebastian River Medical Center instead.
Within minutes of walking into the
hospital’s Emergency Room entrance
and announcing that John was experiencing chest pain, he was on the fast
track to finding out what was going on.
Whisked quickly into a room, he was
given aspirin and a thorough workup by
Dr. John Fernandez and his well-trained
team so fast he barely had time to get his
shirt off. It was clear that John was having a heart attack and needed immediate
intervention.
Knowing that time is crucial, Dr. Fernandez ordered that John be brought directly to the Catheterization Lab where
the preparation for a heart catheterization was immediate. Dr. Charles Croft
and his team took over and efficiently
inserted stents to repair four blocked arteries, one nearly 99% blocked. All this
took place in the span of about an hour
that Friday morning and John returned
home that same weekend.
When asked about his experience,
John said the whole thing was just a
8
“bump in the road”, as he’s always been
a healthy man with no previous history
of heart disease. A retired engineer, John
commended Anna Brooks, Chief Nursing Officer, and Brad Guffin, ER Director, for the processes that SRMC has in
place for patients requiring emergent
cardiac intervention. From the moment
a patient alerts the ER registrar, nurses
and technicians spring into action and
allows the ER physician to provide direction for their care. Dr. Fernandez was
able to diagnose the heart attack quickly, resulting in John getting the lifesaving treatment he needed right away. Dr.
Croft was able to perform the necessary
interventional procedures within minutes of his arrival to the ER.
“We place a lot of emphasis on having
everything ready the moment a patient
presents in our ER with chest pain,” said
Kelly Enriquez, Chief Executive Officer.
“Our team is focused on providing the
very best outcome for our patients. We
are very proud of our Cath Lab proHeartbeat of the Treasure Coast

Have you had a
Vaccination Check Up?
With all of the attention recently to the measles outbreak in California (and even
more recently with several cases reported in Indian River County!), have you given
any thought to whether you up to date with all of your vaccinations or if you should
do an assessment?
Other than an annual influenza shot, many adults never think twice about needing
additional vaccines. Well, there might be that rusty nail they step on while barefoot,
and then they wonder when their last tetanus vaccine was, but otherwise, it is usually
not top of mind. However, because of recent concerns about measles and whooping
cough outbreaks, along with new guidelines for older vaccinations, it might be time to
have a discussion with your doctor or pharmacist!
There have been several updates recently to guidelines for adult vaccines. In addition, you probably are starting to see some television advertising about pneumonia or
shingles vaccines, so let me provide you with the most recent information to help you
make a decision as to your need to update your vaccines.
Pneumonia – The newest guidelines came out in fall 2014. Prevnar (PCV13) was
recently approved for adults over the age of 65 and also for some adults under age 65
with certain conditions. It is a “booster” of sorts for those who have previously had
Pneumovax (PPSV23) and is first line for those who are “naïve” to the pneumonia

“We Care” Update - Exciting News!
Heartbeat has been keeping a pulse on “We Care” for almost
two years and sharing their progress with you. For those of you
who are not familiar with “We Care”- the “We Care” program
provides specialty medical care for patients who otherwise could
not afford it. Medical services valued at a million dollars annually are provided by 134 local volunteer physicians and other
medical professionals.
“We Care” currently operates out of a small space at the Health Department and
has been fundraising to renovate a wing at the Gifford Health Center as their new
home. The Indian River County Medical Society Foundation (IRCMSF), volunteers, sponsors, and supporter efforts have been worth all the work and wait!
In March, a Mardi Gras event to benefit “We Care” was held at the Moorings and
it was a successful evening for raising money toward their much needed space in
the Gifford Health Center. As promised, it was a sumptuous culinary tour of New
Orleans complete with a Dixieland Jazz Band, beads, masks, and entertainment.

Autoimmune Diseases and Women
Autoimmune conditions affect over 50 million Americans, a
large percentage of who are women. More than 80 diseases
occur as a result of the immune system attacking the body’s
own organs, tissues, and cells.
Some of the more common autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, type I diabetes, thyroid disease,
lupus, psoriasis, Sjogren’s, and multiple
sclerosis. They can cause many
different types of symptoms
all over the body that
range from mild to severe in nature.
Our bodies have
an immune system,
which is a complex
network of special
cells and organs that
defends the body
from germs and other
foreign invaders. At the
core of the immune system is the ability to tell the
difference between self and nonself: what’s you and what’s foreign. A
flaw can make the body unable to tell
the difference between self and non-self.
When this happens, the body makes autoantibodies that attack normal cells by
mistake. At the same time special cells
called regulatory T cells fail to do their
job of keeping the immune system in
line. The result is a misguided attack on
your own body. This causes the damage
we know as autoimmune disease. The
body parts that are affected depend on
the type of autoimmune disease.
There are many underlying factors
20
that can cause people to develop an autoimmune condition. There certainly
is an underlying genetic component.
However, whether these genes get expressed or turned on is actually caused
by a host of other factors, such as toxins from heavy metals like mercury or mycotoxins from molds, or infections.
Although each disease is unique, many
share hallmark symptoms, such as fatigue, dizziness, and low-grade fever. For many autoimmune diseases, symptoms come and
go, or can be mild sometimes and severe at others.
When symptoms go away
for a while, it’s called remission. Flares are the
Heartbeat of the Treasure Coast
sudden and severe onset of symptoms.
You might notice that certain triggers,
such as stress or being out in the sun,
cause your symptoms to flare. Knowing
your triggers, following your treatment
plan, and seeing your doctor regularly
can help you to prevent flares or keep
them from becoming severe. If you suspect a flare is coming, call your doctor.
Don’t try a “cure” you heard about from
a friend or relative.
Most autoimmune diseases don’t go
away, but you can treat symptoms and
learn to manage your disease, so you can
enjoy life. If you are living with an autoimmune disease, there are things you
can do each day to feel better:
A Eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
Make sure to include fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk products, and lean sources of protein. Limit
saturated fat, Tran’s fat, excess salt, and
added sugars.
B Get regular physical activity and do
not over do it. A gradual and gentle
exercise program often works well for
people with long-lasting muscle and joint
pain. More is not always better.
C Get enough rest. Rest allows your
body tissues and joints the time they
need to repair. Sleeping can help both
your body and mind. If you don’t get
enough sleep, your stress level and your
symptoms could get worse. You also
can’t fight off sickness as well when you
sleep poorly. When you are well-rested,
you can tackle your problems better and
lower your risk for illness.
D Reduce stress. Stress and anxiety can
trigger symptoms to flare up with some
autoimmune diseases. So finding ways
to simplify your life and cope with daily
stressors will help you to feel your best.
Meditation, self-hypnosis, and guided
imagery, are simple relaxation techniques that might help you to reduce
stress, lessen your pain, and deal with
other aspects of living with your disease.
Although the causes of autoimmune
disease remain unknown, a combination
of a person’s genes together with infections and other environmental exposures are likely to play a significant role
in disease development. Treatments are
available for many autoimmune diseases, but cures have yet to be discovered.
For more information about autoimmune diseases, call
womenshealth.gov at 800-994-9662 (TDD: 888-220-5446) or

Conversation Starter
If you had to make a healthcare decision for a seriously-ill loved one, would
you be prepared to do so? Could you tell
a doctor, decisively, how much information to share with your loved one about
her/his condition? Would you know
whether or not your loved one wanted
aggressive care to prolong her/his life?
Consider the following fact:
90% of people say that talking with their
loved ones about end-of-life care is important…but only 27% percent have done so.
There is a clear contrast between our
desire to discuss end-of-life care and our
willingness to actually do so. Fortunately,
there is a straightforward solution to this
disconnect—a simple conversation—and
the VNA is planning to help facilitate such
conversations in our community through a
grassroots effort called “The Conversation
Project in Indian River County.”
The new initiative is modeled after
“The Conversation Project,” an initiative
started in 2010 by Pulitzer Prize-winning
author Ellen Goodman and a group of
concerned colleagues who wanted to
share stories of “good deaths” and “bad
deaths” within their own circle of loved
ones. At the core of the concept is a
“Conversation Starter Kit” to help people think through their desires for endof-life care, put those thoughts in writing,
and make their wishes known to family,
friends, and healthcare providers.
Collaboration with community part-
ners will be vitally important to reach
the diverse population of Indian River
County. Fortunately, the VNA already
has received positive feedback and letters
of support from many community organizations, and in late March, the organization held a Conversation Project kickoff
meeting, which was attended by forty
local health and human service providers and community advocates the VNA
hopes will champion the cause.
The idea for bringing “The Conversation Project” to Indian River County
came from VNA President & CEO Mary
Linn Hamilton, who has seen the project
work successfully in other states. “Having caring, open, compassionate discussions about end-of-life issues is the key to
ensuring your wishes are honored,” said
Mary Linn, “but starting those conversations can be very difficult. We’re dedicated to helping our friends and neighbors
begin their own conversations so they can
make their wishes known.”
The VNA plans to begin offering Conversation Project presentations over the
summer for community groups, service
organizations and clubs, faith communities, healthcare providers, senior living
communities, and anywhere else people
live, pray, work, or gather. They will also
offer training for volunteer presenters and
facilitators to work with individuals and
families who request support with advance
care planning and family conversations.
To learn more about The Conversation Project in Indian River County, download
your own “Conversation Starter Kit,” or to schedule a Conversation Project presentation for your community group, please visit www.theconversationprojectIRC.org.

of the most popular
runs/events happening
right now in the health
and fitness world. If you
look in the right places,
such as on the Runner’s
Depot of Vero Beach’s
website, you’re sure to
find one almost every
single weekend. For those
who might not be familiar
with the term a 5k is a 3.1
mile road race that participants complete at any pace
they’d like, from walking
with their babies in strollers to sprinting! Anyone
and everyone can enter, and
everyone is equal. From kids
to seniors there can be a lot
of competition out there for
you too. Otherwise you go to
have fun, and possibly support
a friend whose doing their first
race, or trying to lose weight and
they need motivation. Others
look at it as a way to stay in shape
or just test out and improve their
own fitness and health.
Another great thing about 5k’s
is that they are usually put together by people to raise money
for certain causes, such as cancer,
diabetes, school/band/sports/club
trips, small local businesses etc. By
doing this it brings the local community together more frequently,

A Store for Runners, Run by Runners!
Runner’s Depot of Vero Beach is
more than an athletic shoe store. It
is a family owned and operated team
consisting of owners Bill Urban, his
wife Linda, their daughter Meredith
and her husband Jim. In their 10 year business history they
have successfully built a great reputation for providing customers with well fitting, comfortable shoes and apparel for
their fitness needs, as well as hosting very well run races.
They are a one stop shop for all of
your running, walking, and fitness needs
and carry a variety of products designed
for comfort and performance.
When shopping at Runner’s Depot, a

As Bill always tells his customers, “What
some swear by, you may swear at!”
Whether you’re starting a beginners
walking program or you’ve run for years,
they will keep you moving with comfort!
Runner’s Depot has also had a major
influence on the local road race scene.
When they first opened up there were only
4-5 races annually in town. In the last few
years, they have helped that number grow
to 40+ events each year. You can check the
Race Calendar on their website, runnersdepotvb.com to see all the races they are

Lung Cancer Early Detection and Care: Find
Out What a Difference Experience Makes!
I first met Dr. Michael Greene when
he was caring for a friend admitted to
Sebastian River Medical Center (SRMC);
I was moved and impressed with Dr.
Greene’s compassion and how he engaged
the patient and family in options for care.
Months later, the opportunity to interview
Dr. Greene seemed more like a privilege
than a task.
Dr. Greene is double board certified
in general surgery and thoracic surgery.
He obtained his undergraduate degree at
Drury University and went on to receive
his medical degree from the University
of Missouri. Dr. Greene completed his
surgical internship at the University of
Louisville where he later served as a surgical resident and worked at the Price
Institute for Cardiothoracic Research.
He then completed his cardiothoracic
surgery residency at the University of
Florida and became a faculty member.
In addition to his full time work, Dr.
Greene volunteers for medical missions
in other countries such as Haiti and
Peru. Dr. Greene’s medical achievements are numerously admirable and
remain a catalyst for continued advancement and compassion. Dr. Greene told
me that his medical practice is “rewarding and has the highest of highs and lowest of lows. It is a balance of the human/
medical versus the spiritual side of being
a physician.” Speaking of the spiritual
28
side, Dr. Greene’s family and hobbies
such as kite surfing and playing the guitar provide a personally satisfying role in
his life.
Dr. Greene’s office is on U.S Highway
1 in Sebastian where he treats patient for
lung conditions, diseases, and cancers.
He has privileges at SRMC where he
inserts pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (a small device that’s
placed in the chest to help treat irregular
heartbeats), and inserts infusion ports
for the delivery of medications and chemotherapy.
Dr. Greene shared his passion for prevention and early detection for the number one leading cause of cancer deathslung cancer. He explained that each year,
more people die of lung cancer than of
colon, breast, and prostate cancers but
the stigma associated with lung cancer
and its relationship to cigarette smoking
is an injustice. Eighty percent of women
and men are in advanced stages when
they are diagnosed. “We need preven-

Local Organization Re-structures
in “Memory of” My Husband
I got a call from Colleen one evening in
late January asking if the local organization, Diabetes & Health Education, Inc.
could restructure and name their business after my husband, Phil Petersen,
who passed away in April of 2014.
I paused to hold back the tears and
Colleen filled in the silence. She said,
“Laura, certain people deserve something being named after them so their
life’s contributions remain alive, and Phil
is that someone.”
Phil and I knew Colleen and of the
great work she does, so three years ago
we scheduled an appointment with her
for health coaching services for Phil. He
never missed an appointment in over a
year and he became a strong supporter.
Phil made their signs, did interior work,
and exemplified the benefits of better health while being able to continue
doing in-depth tours for Piper Aircraft.
I lost my husband, my best friend and
travel companion. So, I told Colleen
“Phil would like that…” The “Phil Petersen Memorial Center” received their
501-C3 tax emption as a non-profit and
benefited from their first 5K run/walk
fundraiser in March.
The Phil Petersen Memorial Center for
Diabetes and Health serves those with
not only diabetes but individuals with
other chronic illnesses. They provide
education, health coaching, support,
and tools to help you reach your goals
of being healthier, or at least slowing
down risks of complications. Services
are available on a donation basis. They

believe everyone desiring to improve
their health and reduce frequent hospitalizations or medical visits should have
access to their services.
The Center works closely with local
healthcare providers and organizations
to strengthen efforts for a healthier community and greater access to services.
They partner on community seminars,
events, and symposiums. They fill a need
in our community for a comprehensive
and individualized approach for better
self-management and self-advocacy for
people wanting better health. They embrace that health is unique to each person and what works for someone else is
most likely not going to have the same
affect for you – one size fits all.
If you have a health concern, the Phil
Petersen Memorial Center for Diabetes
and Health is only a telephone call away.
The fees are donation based. Colleen
Sanders-Symanski is the program administrator. She is an RN, a certified
diabetes educator, holds certifications in
health and wellness, and is also a certified
National Diabetes Prevention Program
Lifestyle Coach. You can reach her at
(772) 231-5555.
We have a home sponsored by “A
Healthier Me” in Vero Beach and hope
to have our own center in the near
future- we are blessed with awesome
supporters. It is comforting to know that
Phil’s name and his values will live on

Racing to Raise Support for Alzheimer’s
Grace Healthcare treats patients, family
members, employees, and community
members, how they would wish to be
treated. Their ownership and corporate
management team, as well as individual
facility nurses and caregivers, recognize
that their profession is much more than
a business; it is a mission – “A Service
from The Heart.”
They decided to
“speed up” their mission for finding
a cure for Alzheimer’s and to provide
comfort to caregivers.
Seasonal local philanthropist Byron
DeFoor, who founded Grace Healthcare, and his Fifty Plus Racing team of
internationally known race car drivers
are literally putting their lives on the
line to raise support for Alzheimer’s
research. Fifty Plus Racing Foundation
came to fruition when Byron DeFoor
and co-founder Rocker Brian Johnson
(AC/DC) realized they both had a passion for racing cars and a shared mission
to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. Debuting
on Daytona International Speedway in
2012 at the Rolex 24 hours 50th Anniversary, this year, 2015, will mark their
4th consecutive year of competing,
drawing international attention and support for their mission to cure Alzheimer’s. The Foundation has so far raised
hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the search for a cure. To learn more
about the Fifty Plus - visit their website
at www.fiftyplusracing.com.
Grace Rehabilitation of Vero Beach
is a supporter of the ‘Fifty Plus Racing
Foundation” which uses racing to raise
money for Alzheimer’s. Their mission is
to Cure Alzheimer’s and Comfort Caregivers. They do that by funding research
and awarding grants to unfunded caregivers. Locally, their team Vero goal
is to raise $3500, through car washes,
yard sales, carnivals (where you have an
opportunity to dunk a staff member),

Vaccination Check Up continued from page 10
vaccine. Bottom line, even if you have previously been vaccinated for pneumonia, if
it has been more than 1 year, you are probably a candidate for this vaccine!
Shingles – This vaccine is indicated for age 50 and over, but Centers for Disease
Control (CDC) recommended for adults 60 and over. While it does not guarantee
that a vaccinated individual will not develop shingles, at the least it greatly prevents
the severity and duration of the symptoms that some suffer from having shingles. The
vaccine is not recommended for certain populations with greatly weakened immune
systems (such as HIV, those undergoing chemotherapy, etc.), but otherwise should be
considered and has very few side effects associated with it.
Measles – I have had several inquiries about this vaccine because of the recent news
reports, especially about the ability of adults to contract measles due to waning immunization status since they received their vaccine so many years ago. However, please
know there is no cause for concern! Almost every case that has been documented
recently has occurred in children who were not previously vaccinated. And, the CDC
has a great frequently asked questions (FAQ) page that even states that anyone born
before 1957 is considered “immune by age.” www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/measles/faqs-dis-vac-risks.htm
Whooping cough (pertussis) – A booster vaccine of Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria,
acellular pertussis) is recommended for all adults age 19 to 64 in place of their normal
tetanus vaccine every 10 years. Also, adults 65 and over who anticipate being around
an infant should have a booster. The attached link from the CDC gives more detailed
information. Pharmacists may not administer this vaccine under Florida law, so you
should ask your physician or check with the local health department about the availability of Tdap www.adultvaccination.org/whooping_cough_vaccine_pertussis_vaccination_adult_immunization.htm
Annual influenza (flu) shot. This is important for ALL age groups, so please remember to get your flu shot each fall which provides immunity against the flu during
the height of flu season.
Most pharmacies offer these vaccines and do not require a prescription under Florida law. There are exceptions, so please call your pharmacist first to verify. Also,
certain vaccines are billed to your Part B benefit of Medicare and usually have no out
of pocket cost. However, Zostavax, for shingles, is only billed to your prescription
insurance so there often is a copay for that vaccine.
Listed below are a few additional references including a video that discusses the
2015 Adult Vaccination Schedules. Also, Bay Street Pharmacy is happy to serve as a
resource if you have additional questions. Please call us at 772-589-2043 or reach us
via our website www.baystreetpharmacy.com or on Facebook www.facebook.com/

member intake as well as costume management. Not to mention she sings for
the group and attends all rehearsals and
performances! The amount of work she
puts into the group is a full time job in
itself and her volunteer efforts go above
and beyond what would ever be required
of her. She has been an outstanding asset to the Silver Tones Program and has
helped transform the program to what it
is today.

John’s Island Foundation Awards SRA
Grant for Sebastian Adult Day Care New
Security System
The Senior Resource Association
(SRA) has been awarded a $20,000 grant
from the John’s Island Foundation for an
Access Control and Fire Alarm System
to be installed at its Adult Day Care location in Sebastian on Davis Street.
Due to the Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) regulations and to
receive a new licensure to accommodate
more attendees for Adult Day Care at
its Vero Beach location, the Senior Resource Association made it a priority to
have the security/fire alarm system in
place after converting the Schumann
Center in October of 2013. The funds
raised were through individual donations and capital campaigns to add the
new features and prepare the new location for its renovated purpose.
“The system has been working very
well for our staff, clients and caregivers
at our Vero Beach Adult Day Care facility,” said Karen Deigl, SRA President/
CEO. “We are excited to implement the
same security system to our Sebastian facility to provide the best service possible.”
The security systems include locking
devices that consist of electromagnet
and an armature plate that are connected
to a separate release button or key fob
swipe mounted near the door. All doors
are also tied to the Fire Alarm System
and receive a signal to disarm itself in
the event of a fire or other emergency. A
master intercom is also installed to alert
staff of a participant’s arrival. The system
allows the SRA Adult Day Care to provide the utmost safety and security for all
of the clients in the program.
The Senior Resource Association requested the grant for the system to put
the requirements in place for a new
Adult Day Care licensure. The new licensure designation will make the Adult
Day Care facilities in Vero Beach and
Sebastian a ‘Specialized Alzheimer’s
Services Center’. This new licensure will
allow SRA Adult Day Care to provide
clinical care for clients with Alzheimer’s
and other Dementia Related Disorders
(ADRD) as well as support and education services for their caregivers.
For more information about the Senior Resource Association,
visit www.seniorresourceassociation.org or call 772-569-0760.
