Mass Intentions & Memorial Candles
If you would like to have a Mass offered for a particular
Intention or for someone who has died, or if you would like to
dedicate a candle to an intention or a loved one, please call the
parish office. The stipend for the Mass is $10. The candles are
$30 for 1 month, $60 for 6 months, or $90 for one year. Our
office staff will help you find an open date and time for a Mass,
or available candles for dedications.
What is it to be close to Jesus and see the miracles he does?
In our Gospel this Sunday, John the Evangelist tells the narrative of the miracle of
water turned into wine. In that story, there is this minute detail that says the
headwaiter was deprived to see Jesus turn water to wine. The servers who drew the
water saw and knew. What an awesome rare privilege!
John, in a very sharp contrast, showed what eyes see Christ’s miracles. The servers
saw the miracle. The headwaiter did not. Wait. Why would a headwaiter miss that
chance when he was supposed to be privileged to be near Jesus? Well, that sounds
presumptuous. No one is privileged to be near Jesus. On the contrary, anyone is
invited to come close and see.
Come and see (Jn 1:39). Jesus invites anyone to have the chance to be see revealed
Truth. Are they, who come to see, the scholars of the law? No. They were ordinary
people. They were shepherds, fishermen, tax collectors, Samaritans, women, sinners. They were those who
chose to be opened.
Opening our eyes, ears, mind and heart can be challenging. We usually believe in our own truths. And
when we believe in our own truths, we are closed to only believe in them. Thus we are made to believe in
fundamentalism and ideologies.

Are we privileged to see miracles? Yes. On a daily basis. But it is not our eyes that see one; it is the
eyes of our faith that sees miracles.
Recently the news circulated about a possible Eucharistic miracle in the Diocese of Salt Lake City. The
story is told that a priest mistakenly gave a child, who had not yet made his First Communion, the Eucharist.
The mother prudently returned the Eucharist to the priest. The priest religiously did his part: he placed the
Eucharist in a glass of water. After three days, the Eucharist bled. Now the event is being verified of its
veracity.
Why don’t we see this here in our diocese? I do not know. But do we actually need to see one like that?
I don’t think so. We are already privileged to see the real presence of God every day at Mass. The Eucharist is
enough to see and taste and put to heart Jesus Christ. The Eucharist is Jesus Christ.

Adore the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Believe that the Eucharist makes Christ present. It is
the Body and Blood of Christ.
Our chapel offers 24-hour Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. I am inviting you to come to adore
Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament helps our spiritual growth. Individuals or
groups are encouraged to take an hour for Thursday adoration and also you are invited to come anytime. If you
wish to come for adoration other than Thursday, call the office to have access to the chapel (541-926-1449).
¿Como seria estar cerca de Jesús y ver los milagros que hace?
En nuestro Evangelio de este domingo, Juan el Evangelista cuenta
La narración del milagro del agua convertida en vino. En esta historia, hay ese detalle que dice que el jefe de
camareros fue privado de ver a Jesús convertir el agua en vino. Los servidores que sacaban el agua vieron y se
dieron cuenta. ¡Qué increíble y raro privilegio!
Juan, en un contraste muy fuerte, nos muestra los ojos de los que vieron los milagros de Cristo. Los
servidores vieron el milagro. El jefe de camareros no lo vio. Espera. ¿Por qué sería que el jefe de camareros
perdido esa oportunidad cuando se suponía que era el privilegiado de estar cerca de Jesús? Bueno, eso suena
presuntuoso. Nadie tiene el privilegio de estar cerca de Jesús. Por el contrario, a cualquiera se le invita a
acercarse y ver.
Ven a ver (Jn 1:39). Jesús invita a cualquiera a tener la oportunidad de ver la Verdad revelada. ¿Los,
que vienen a ver, son los maestros de la ley? No. Ellos eran personas comunes. Eran pastores, pescadores,
recaudadores de impuestos, samaritanos, mujeres, los pecadores. Ellos eran los que eligieron a ser y estar
abiertos.

Abrir los ojos, los oídos, la mente y el corazón puede ser un reto. Por lo general, creemos en nuestras
propias verdades. Y cuando creemos en nuestras propias verdades, estamos cerrados a creer sólo en ellos. Así
se nos hace creer en el fundamentalismo y las ideologías.

¿ Somos privilegiados de ver los milagros? Sí. Diariamente. Pero nuestros ojos ven uno; es acaso los
ojos de nuestra fe que ve milagros.
Recientemente, la noticia circuló sobre un posible milagro eucarístico en la Diócesis de Salt Lake City.
La historia cuenta que un sacerdote por error dio a un niño, que todavía no había hecho su Primera Comunión,
la Eucaristía. La madre devolvió prudentemente la Ostia al sacerdote. El sacerdote hizo religiosamente su parte: él puso la Ostia en un vaso de agua. Después de tres días, la Ostia sangró. Ahora están verificando el caso
de su veracidad.
¿Porqué no vemos esto aquí en nuestra Diócesis? No lo sé. Pero realmente necesitamos ver algo como
eso? No lo creo. Ya tenemos el privilegio de ver la presencia real de Dios cada día en la Misa. La Eucaristía es
suficiente para ver y probar y poner el corazón en Jesucristo. La Eucaristía es Jesucristo.

Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
SURPRISES
Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The
scriptures are filled with stories of God’s surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children
obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted
to eternal, heavenly glory.
Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event
knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises.
For the bridegroom in today’s Gospel story, who has no
direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus.
We may think that the point of today’s familiar story
of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus,
our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however,
needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to
have faith in Christ means that somebody’s life—not necessarily our own—will be surprised for the better.

Mary, whom Catholic tradition names “Mother of Mercy,”
at Cana intercedes with her Son to show mercy toward the
bridal couple: “Son, they have no wine.” But he does
more! Jesus’ transformation of water into wine is a
“sign” (John’s term for “miracle”) that God’s marriage with
the whole human race has begun in Jesus’ person and
ministry, a marriage that will be consummated on the
cross: “It is finished”—we are saved! But before Jesus acts,
Mary instructs the servers to prepare the way for Jesus’
miracle of mercy: “Do whatever he tells you.” During this
Jubilee Year of Mercy, Mother Church, like Mother Mary,
instructs us to share the Spirit’s manifold gifts—some of
which Paul lists in today’s second reading—in generous
service to the human family. Thus we prepare the way for
Jesus’ new miracles of mercy, transforming life’s
sometimes stagnant water into the refreshing wine of
God’s mercy.

La vida está llena de sorpresas, algunas agradables,
otras no. La Sagrada Escritura está llena de relatos sobre
las sorpresas de Dios que surgen donde menos se esperan:
los hijos más jóvenes reciben la herencia, a los más humildes se les dan los sitios de honor; un predicador itinerante,
condenado a morir como un criminal, es exaltado hacia la
gloria celestial eterna.
Cualquiera que haya planificado una boda o celebración similar sabe que está llena de oportunidades para que
surjan sorpresas. Para el novio (el cual, en el relato bíblico,
no tiene contacto directo con Jesús) la agradable sorpresa
vino porque otra persona había prestado atención y tenía
fe en Jesús.
A lo mejor pensamos que la lección de la conocida historia de las bodas de Caná es que cuando tenemos fe en
Jesús, nuestra vida cambiará positivamente. Sin embargo,
un cristiano necesita tener una perspectiva más amplia, y
darse cuenta que tener fe en Cristo implica que la vida de
alguien –sea la tuya, sea la de otra persona– va a mejorarse sorpresivamente.
Por la boda de Cana, la tradición católica llama a María
“Madre de la Misericordia”, pues ella intercede ante su
Hijo para mostrar misericordia a los novios: “Hijo, no les
queda vino”. ¡Jesús hace algo más! Para Jesús esa transformación que hace del agua en vino es un “signo” (la palabra
que usa Juan es “milagro”) que es el matrimonio de Dios
con toda la humanidad que empezó en la persona de Jesús
y su ministerio y que será consumado en la Cruz: “todo
está cumplido”, ¡somos salvados! Pero antes que Jesús
haga algo, María dijo a los que estaban sirviendo preparar
el camino para el milagro de la misericordia de Jesús:
“Hagan lo que él les diga”. Durante este Año Jubilar de la
Misericordia, la “Madre Iglesia”, como la Madre María, nos
dice que compartamos los dones del Espíritu, algunos de
los cuales Pablo enlista en la segunda lectura de hoy, en un
servicio generoso a la familia y así preparar el camino para
los nuevos milagros de misericordia de Jesús, transformando la vida; algunas veces el agua estancada en un vino refrescante de la misericordia de Dios.

Holy Family - On the Move.
PLEASE NOTE: There were a few snafu’s that have
changed the location of the Holy Family statue. It was
delayed a week, then went to the home of Jack & Dorothy
Gall. Last week it was with Dan, Lisa, Richard & William
Freeman. This week Jim, Peggy & Ian McDowell will
host the statue at their home.
Our Catechism defines Mercy as:
Charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our
neighbor in his or her spiritual and bodily necessities.
In keeping with his Holiness's request, each week
we will be presenting one family or individual with a statue
of the Holy Family. This can be put on display somewhere
in their home as a reminder of the Pontiff's desire for all of
us to pray for and show mercy and kindness toward all
people, especially to those who are less fortunate. After one
week the statue will be passed on to another family or
individual. This ritual will continue throughout the year.
