lautet das Motto des United States Marine Corps
(USMC). Die Angehörigen der amerikanischen
Marineinfanterie werden gemeinhin auch als
»Marines« bezeichnet. Sehr bekannt dürfte wohl
auch die Bezeichnung »Ledernacken« sein. Sie
ist ein Pseudonym für Kompromisslosigkeit, Zähigkeit und Härte des Corps und dessen Angehörigen. Die US-Marines gelten als prestigeträchtigste Einheit der US-Streitkräfte. Ihre adretten
“Semper Fidelis” – always faithful, that’s the
motto of the United States Marine Corps (USMC).
The members of the American Marine Infantry
are commonly known as “Marines”. The term
“leatherneck” is also a well known moniker for
Marines. It is a synonym for the uncompromising, toughness and rigor of the Corps and its
soldiers. The U.S. Marines are considered the
most prestigious branch of the U.S. military
forces. Their smart blue uniforms with the red
borders look very splendid. Alex John Kruso is
the oldest U.S. Marine living in Germany and he
lives in Bremerhaven.
Just imagine for a moment that you used
to deliver the morning newspaper to one of the
inventors of the airplane or that you were selected as a member of the U.S. fencing team for
the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. If so, you
would be admittedly a bit older than most of us.
But you would surely have a couple of exciting
stories to tell – such as Alexander John Kruso.
“I had a fantastic life with a wonderful woman,
great children and many unbelievable experiences,” says the 94-year-old man with the animated smile. This man, who sounds so satisfied
with life, has tales to tell that many among us
can hardly imagine. Could it be that precisely
there lies the secret of his satisfaction and his
humble attitude towards life?
Alex J. Kruso was born, one of ten children,
on the 8th of April, 1920 in Dayton Ohio. Alex’s
parents were Hungarian immigrants from Bu-
