Ferrari bracing for hardest year yet in the
2013 Formula 1 season
DECEMBER 2012
`
Ferrari is bracing for what it believes will be the toughest year in Formula 1 history
next season, as teams get ready for new regulations in 2014. During that year the
engine formula changes to 1.6 liter V6 plants with turbo charging (multi systems on
engines) and more energy recovery systems.

Ferrari is determined to make amends for the weaknesses that cost it this year's
world championship, Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali says he is under no
illusions about the size of the task the team is facing if it wants to triumph.
He reasons that the challenge posed by a new car and engine rules for 2014 is already
enormous while pushing the development of the 2013 car.

My First Ferrari!
by
Bert Smith
Regional Director/President
1976! I was working as a computer programmer for a national CPA firm, making the
princely sum of $10K a year. I had been fascinated by sports cars in general and Ferraris
in particular for as far back as I could remember. I didn't know much about the prancing
horse marque but like many of you, I sure wanted one.
I had overheard someone in the office mentioning that a local bank had a repossessed Ferrari for sale at $7,500! It
was supposed to be a beautiful silver over red 1968 365 GT 2+2, famously labeled by the ferraristi as the Queen
Mother.
Enthralled with the idea of actually owning one of these dashing cars, I immediately contacted the bank and
arranged financing which meant that payments would be just over half of my paycheck. I was so excited. I
bought the car, of course, subject to a "mechanic's approval.”
I drove the car over to Western
Motor Works in southwest Denver
and meet the famous Kenny Sindall
and his team of mechanics who
checked the oil and told me I was
about a gallon low!
My first eye-opening event for sure
but I sensed there would be many
more with the Queen Mother!
I said, "Don’t you mean a quart?”
"No, a solid gallon low because it holds 12 quarts,” Kenny casually explained with equal authority.
The gallon of oil was poured into the v-12 engine and after a thorough inspection, I was informed that the car
needed tires because the steel cords were showing. Well, of course I knew that, but what I didn’t know was that
the new Michelin XWX’s were about $125 each. Quick math meant that it would be indeed $500. My paycheck
was looking smaller and smaller.
Kenny’s team also told me the Ferrari needed new silver paint and a decent job would only cost about $1,000. I
could now see my paycheck slipping away faster than I was earning the cash!
I knew I couldn’t afford $1,000 for the new paint so my younger brother came to my rescue because he was a
manager of a body shop and could get it done for $500. My wallet seemed fatter after that sensational news.

(Continuing My First Ferrari!...from page 3)
But, Kenny had also told me that the complete ANSA exhaust system was burned out, a lowly $500 of course,
and that I needed four new stabilizer/leveller shocks in the rear. Good grief, another $500! It seemed that
everything was always “another $500.”
And a couple of synchros in the transmission - $500. Another one! Good grief, they didn't even bother to list the
number of cosmetic repairs that the interior would need, probably a long list of $500 parts.
At this point I was feeling faint with $500 bills floating around my head. The dream of owning one of
Maranello’s best had now evaporated. At best, I was only expecting to own the car for a few months while I got
it painted and installed tires on it. I had planned all along to sell the Ferrari for a profit and then I would have
owned a Ferrari, a dream come true.
I knew my princely paycheck would disappear quickly and that I would be under water with no chance of being
able to grocery shop or pay rent until it sold. I was going to take it back to the bank but the key they had given
me, the only one by the way, was about to break off in the ignition. It had obviously been bent and straightened a
few times. I took a deep breathe of air, called the bank, and asked them to pick it up.
I will always wonder where the Ferrari went.
Did it end up in a good home? Was it
painted? Did it have those new XWX
tires? Did the new owner
have lots of $500 bills?
Just the other day I thought I heard a
new ANSA exhaust on a Ferrari V-12
wailing down I-25 !!

New Brake Ducts
During the last F1 race in Brazil, observers
noticed there were new brake ducts on the
Ferrari racers, featuring an additional fin
attached to the drum to boost the amount of
downforce at the rear of the car. At the previous
round in Austin, Fernando Alonso used a
modified version of the F2012's rear diffuser.

Dear members (a note from Tim Greenshields, Editor),
I recently talked with Peter Sachs from the Klemantaski Collection and asked permission to use some of his
historic racing photos throughout our monthly newsletters with the objective of bringing a sense of Ferrari
history to all of us each month. What a wonderful gentleman he was! He sent me an email allowing this
monthly sharing. Please look at the Klemantaski website below. Peter has a brilliant collection from many
of the great photographers such as Peter Coltrin, Robert Daley, Ami Guichard, Edward Eves, Nigel Snowdon,
Gunter Moter, Louis Klemantaski, and many other greats.
http://www.klemcoll.com/
Peter says: The Klemantaski Collection is one of the world's largest and most varied libraries of historic
motorsports and motor racing photography. The Collection supplies its images to photograph and car
collectors and enthusiasts, racing car restorers, authors and publishers worldwide. The Collection also offers
a selection of limited edition publications which include many of its most famous images.
After visiting the website above, go to The Gallery to see a great selection of images, with a helpful search
engine. Save your favorite images to review again later. You also may order prints of your favorite images
direct from The Gallery. Peter is once again having an End-of-Year Sale! All prints are 20% off normal prices
and all Books are 40% off normal prices. Place your orders early right here. Discounts on website orders will
be taken manually and confirmed to you by return email.
If you are looking for photos of a specific car, driver or race course, send us an email with the details. We will
then provide you with low resolution scans of any images we may have. For a list of races and other events
which we cover, you may obtain a copy of a new revised version of our Venue List which you will find in our
Downloads area. The Downloads area also contains our Race Program list – we will send copies to you of
these programs – and full descriptions of how we produce our prints and our print pricing.
