Piaget: Observing Children’s Thinking Skills
Name: _________________________________________
Date:____________________
Piaget designed many tasks to test children’s logical thinking. http://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRF27F2bn-A
For this activity, do each of the following:
1. Select three of Piaget’s Tasks for Logical thinking (from the handout or from the video we watched).
2. Collect the materials you will need, write the procedure and the
English you will need on the attached forms “Preparing for Piaget’s
Experiments”
(one for each experiment=3 forms). Practice giving the tests FIRST.
3. Select two children:
• One should be in the pre-operational stage (ages2-7). It is
best if you choose one in the middle about four years old.
• The other should be in the concrete operational stage (age 7
-11)
• Be sure to get permission from the child’s parent before doing
the task!
4. Set up the cameras and perform the tasks. Use the photos and label
them in your reports. You will fill in 3 reports for each child
(attached). 6 reports total! (and 3 PREPARATION reports)
5. Think about how you will also get some pictures. Do not take
pictures of the children’s faces! Just from the back or from above.

Keep in mind: Remember this is a scientific experiment! You must be
scientific and do the experiments properly. If you do not, your results
may not be accurate.
Be sure not to tell the child, “You are right!” or “You are wrong!”,
because there is no right or wrong. We are just trying to find out if
Piaget’s theory about cognitive development is correct.
Preparing To Do Piaget Conservation Experiments
Experiment # 1
Name
Water
Materials Needed
Two cups the same size and one is longer
Exact words I will say:
Does it has the same amount of
water
What I will do when I say these
words:
point at the two glasses that are
filled with water with same size
what glass do think has more this I will take one of the glasses that has
glass or this glass or both of them the same size and transfert it to the
have the same amount
longer glass
why do think this cup has more
water?

Experiment # 2
name
biscuit
Materials Needed
3 pieces
Exact words I will say:
What I will do when I say these
words:
DO think thats fair
i will take to pieces of biscuit and
give them one
why it not fair
pointing on our plates
Now do think its fair
i will broke their biscuits into half

Materials Needed
10 coins
Exact words I will say:
What I will do when I say these
words:
we have two rows of dirhams do
thing both rows have the same
amount
organizing the two rows at the same
length
what do you think are they both
the same ? or one is more than
the other and why
i will sperate the coins of one row
only and keep the other one as it is

Piaget: Observing Children’s Thinking Skills
Describe the basic procedure of the task (How it is done)
i filled 2 same size glasses with water and then i told her do
think that both glasses have the same amount of water
Describe the child’s responses
after she said both have the same amount of water i poured
one in the long glass and i asked her again now which one has
more water or both have the same amount? and why
She said the longer glass because its taller
What do the child’s responses signify?
It shows that all kids at this age have same response,as it
shows that they their mind is still not fully developed

Describe the child’s responses
At the beginning when i give her one she said its not
fair because she said she had one only and i have
two pieces of biscuits, then when i broked her
biscuit to half she smiled and said now it is fair i
have two and you also have two pieces of biscuits
What do the child’s responses signify?
I signified that my sister respond that she is still in
per operation stage and her mind is still not able to
understand this concept

Name of child Reem
age 7
gender F
Name of experiment 3 coins
Describe the basic procedure of the task
At the begging i brought 10 coins and put into two rows each
row has 5 coins after that i pointed at each row and asked do
you think both have the same amount of coins ? and she replied
by saying both have the same but after i separated one row
and asked her again do both have the same or one has more
than the other? She the separated one because its taller
Describe the child’s responses
when i separated the coins she immediately she said it has
more because it is longer and bigger

What do the child’s responses signify?
It signify that reem pre operation stage this proves that she is
still not able to understand more than one concept or more
than one view at same time and this proves that piaget theory
is true

more water or both have the same amount? and why
he said both have the same amount you just changed the glass
What do the child’s responses signify?
the child responed signified that they are in the concrete
operational stage because they can understand more than one
concepts.

understand more than one concept or more than one view at
same time and this proves that piaget theory is true again
