From the bus stop in Gunnerside, head south on the
B6270 following Gunnerside Beck on your left. Cross
the River Swale on the road bridge and continue as it
rises a little, turns right then left, to a minor junction.
Turn left here, over the cattle grid and follow the track on
the left. This old, enclosed lane continues for a mile and
a half, past Haverdale House where it meets a slightly
wider road. Turn left at this junction.
Walk along this road, ignoring the first road to the left.
Continue to its end, around a slight leftward curve and
past Low Houses. Where the road forks into two, take
the left hand alternative.
This is Low Lane, which follows the river Swale for 1½
miles until it meets another, wider road.
Turn left here and continue along this road passing
Scabba Wath Bridge. After a further ½ miles, look out
for a bridleway signpost to the left.
Leave the road here and follow the bridleway close to
the river. After around a mile, the route bears slightly
right across a field bringing you to a path junction.
Turn left here and cross the River Swale on a footbridge. On the other side follow the rightward path,
across a couple of fields, to another bridge over a minor
stream.
Bear left, ascending up the enclosed path and follow it
where it turns right. This leads into the edge of Reeth.
Take the second lane on the left to reach the centre of
the village, where there are public toilets, a National
Park Centre, bus stop and parking as well as café’s
pubs, and shops.
