History
St. Anton am Arlberg
T he cradle of Alpine skiing and
modern cable car technology
In 1901 six pioneers from St. Anton am Arlberg founded the
Ski-Club Arlberg. In 1903 Hannes Schneider revolutionized
alpine ski technique and founded the first ski school in
Austria and, in 1937 the Galzigbahn in St. Anton became
the first cable car especially designed for winter operation.
T he Ski-Club Arlberg which was founded in 1901 by the six St.
Anton pioneers organized in 1904 the first „General ski race“.
The participants had to walk over 1,000 meters in altitude
through snow from St. Anton to the start near the Ulmer Hütte
on the Valluga. The long distance downhill ski race led from
the Valluga over the Galzig to St. Anton. It soon became clear
that the usual Telemark skiing style had to be changed for the
high-alpine terrain of the Arlberg because the Telemark lunge
style demanded extraordinary stamina and ended repeatedly
with a fall. The 13-year-old Arlberger Hannes Schneider would
revolutionize alpine skiing technique; by firstly shifting his
weight when turning and going into a tuck on the straight. As
early as 1907 he taught guests from the St. Anton hotel „Alte
Post“ in his new Stem turn technique. In 1920 he founded the
first ski school in Austria and in the following years featured in
15 mountain and ski films. 1928 was the year of the first, now
legendary Arlberg-Kandahar race in St. Anton - a milestone for
the international breakthrough of alpine ski races.
ince 1937: Pioneering cable car technology work in the
S
Arlberg
In 1937 the first winter operation designed gondola in the Alpine
region was built in St. Anton on the Galzig - the Galzig cable car.
In the 1950s it was followed by the St. Christoph and the Valluga
cable cars, the Valluga cable car was at the time the highest lift
in the Alps. Also in the 1950s came Austria’s first fixed double
chair lift on the Kapall. The1960s saw further alterations of the
existing lifts, and in addition, the variety on offer was extended
by, amongst others, the Valluga lift, the Osthang chair lift, as well
as the Tanzböden T-bar. During the 1970s there was constant
investment in the expansion of the area, one of the investments
being the Rendl cable car, thus opening up the Rendl skiing area
with three T-bar lifts. In addition to the permanent investment in
avalanche barriers, in slope improvements and in the art of snow
making, in the 1980s, the following lifts were built: Valfageher
chair lift, Zammermoos chair lift, Schindlergrat chair lift, Riffl I &
II chair lifts and the Mattun chair lift, as well as the renovation of
the Kapall chair lift. In the next decade there would be continued
investment in snow making, as well as slope development,
the update of already existing lifts and new ones such as the
Kapall and Gampen. In the years prior to the FIS World Ski Championships 2001 the focus was around the areas of the Gampen
and Kapall: enlargement of the snow making system, opening
of the Fang chair lift and the Nasserein cable car. Today, the 97
cable cars and lifts in the Arlberg now constitute a truly hightech lift system. An absolute world first in 2006 was the new
Galzigbahn, a highly modern Funitel cable car, combined with
newly developed giant ferries wheel technology: wheels with an
impressive diameter of 9.3 m allow the guests level entry into
the gondolas. In 2009 the Rendl cable car was replaced by an
8 man single cable, cable car with heated seats and the new
Rendl restaurant was opened. 2013 saw the new Tanzböden
chair lift on Galzig come in operation: a 6 man detachable chair
lift with weather protection hood and automatic child safety - a
further first in the field of cable car technology.
