Is Camping Allowed
in City Limits?
With limited housing available in Moab, many turn to temporary living situations, living in RV’s, campers,
or in their cars. The Planning Department and the Police Department receive many phone calls asking,
“Is camping allowed in City limits?” and “Can my friends live in my RV on my private property?” or
“Can I rent out my RV on my private property?”. The answers to these questions are found in the City’s Municipal
Code and are provided for you below.
Camping is not allowed on individually owned residential lots, or on commercial or retail property, or on
public streets or public parks. These restrictions are in place to preserve residential neighborhoods and ensure
proper facilities for those camping.
The City does allow camping in tents or RV’s and similar vehicles but only in designated campgrounds or
recreational vehicle parks.
The city code defines camping as:
“Camping” means to establish, for human habitation or temporary lodging any tent, lean-to, tepee, yurt, hut,
tarp, sleeping bag, blanket, vehicle, trailer, or camper.
“Campground” means a public area designated by a public agency for camping, or a private area licensed
by the City of Moab for camping.
Camping or Living in RV’s, Travel Trailers, Campers or Cars – Camping in City Limits is only allowed in
designated campgrounds or recreational vehicle parks. Living in an RV, travel trailer, camper, car etc... on
someone’s private property, for any length of time, is prohibited in City Limits. Living in an RV, travel trailer,
camper, car etc...parked on a public street, public parking lot or public park, for any length of time, is prohibited
in City Limits.
