First Reading -- God appoints Jeremiah as prophet to
the nations (Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19).
Psalm -- I will sing of your salvation (Psalm 71).
Second Reading -- Love with its many facets is the most
important of the virtues (1 Corinthians 12:31 -- 13:13 [13:4-13]).
Gospel -- When Jesus claims his salvific mission is for all people, not just the
Jews, he is expelled by the enraged members of the Nazarean synagogue
(Luke 4:21-30).
THE GREAT HYMN TO LOVE
It is doubtful that Saint Paul, when he sat down
to write what we now know as the thirteenth
chapter of First Corinthians, knew that he was
penning what was to become one of the keystones of Christian ethics. In this
brief passage, he set down ideals about love that have held fast through the
centuries. Sometimes we may think that because these are ideals to which we
aspire, we are excused from them in our daily living.
But what Paul was writing was a letter to his friends, providing them with some
sound advice about what it meant--and still means--to live in love, day by day,
as a follower of Christ. We find in his words to his friends a broadening of the
great commands of Jesus to love God and neighbor. Today we hear what this
love must look like in our own actions, and how it ought to guide our relationships with others.

Interna onal Day of Prayer and Awareness
Against Human Trafficking – February 8th
Pope Francis has called the Catholic community to
engage in the fight against Human Trafficking. Human Trafficking is the 2nd largest and fastest growing illegal enterprise in Southern California. However, given that is it growing faster than drug Trafficking, it could become the largest illegal enterprise in a few short years with our children being
the main target for sex trafficking. Labor trafficking
is an even greater problem worldwide, and persists
in local neighborhoods, households, businesses and
industries. February 8th is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita who was kidnapped and sold into
slavery in the late 1800’s. On her feast day the
Catholic community is asked to pray and take action
in the fight against Human Trafficking. Three actions that we can take that will make a difference
are:
1. Pray for the healing of the victims and that God
will change the heart of the Traffickers.
2. Protect the most likely victims. The most likely
victims of Human Trafficking are foster children,
homeless youth, the poor and immigrants. For that
reason we can consider becoming foster parents and
mentors. We can also volunteer for Catholic Charities, which is the largest charity in the U.S. with a
focus on taking care of the poor and immigrants.
3. Make sure that for any purchase of imported
products like tea, coffee and sugar, those products
are marked “fair trade” meaning no slave labor was
used in the growing, manufacturing and distribution
of that product.

1- Năm Thánh trong lịch sử Giáo hội Công Giáo :
Truyền thống Công giáo về Năm Thánh bắt đầu với Đức giáo
hoàng Bônifaxiô VIII vào năm 1300. Đức giáo hoàng đã ấn định
mỗi thế kỷ sẽ có một năm Thánh. Từ năm 1475, để giúpmỗi thế hệ
đều được hưởng Năm Thánh, Năm Thánh thường lệ được cử hành
mỗi 25 năm. Tuy nhiên, khi có một sự kiện có tầm quan trọng đặc
biệt, Đức giáo hoàng có thể công bố mở Năm Thánh đặc biệt. Cho
đến nay, đã có 26 Năm Thánh thường lệ được mở, gần đây nhất là
Năm Thánh 2000. Việc mở NămThánh đặc biệt có từ thế kỷ XVI.
Trong thế kỷ vừa qua đã có hai Năm Thánh đặc biệt: năm 1933, do
Đức giáo hoàng Piô XI công bố để kỷ niệm 1900 năm Ơn Cứu
chuộc và năm 1983, do Đức giáo hoàng Gioan Phaolô II công bố
vào dịp 1950 năm Ơn Cứu chuộc.
Hội Thánh Công giáo đã đem lại một ý nghĩa thiêng liêng hơn
cho năm Hồng ân của Do Thái giáo, gồm có ơn tha thứ chung, ân xá
dành cho mọi người, để canh tân mối quan hệ với Thiên Chúa và
với tha nhân. Như vậy, Năm Thánh luôn là một cơ hội để đào sâu
đức tin và canh tân chứng tá Kitô giáo.
2- Năm Thánh Lòng Thương Xót :
Ngày 13 tháng Ba 2015, tại Đền thờ Thánh Phêrô, Đức Thánh
Cha Phanxicô đã công bố mở một“Năm Thánh đặc biệt” gọi là
“Năm Thánh Lòng Thương xót”. Năm Thánh bắt đầu với việc mở
Cửa Thánh tại Đền thờ Thánh Phêrô vào ngày 08-12-2015, Đại lễ
Đức Mẹ Vô Nhiễm nguyên tội, và kết thúc vào ngày 20-11-2016,
Đại lễ Chúa Giêsu Kitô, Vua Vũ Trụ.
Đức Thánh Cha đã công bố mở Năm Thánh khi ngài giảng trong
cử hành phụng vụ sám hối bắt đầu “24 giờ cho Chúa”. Sáng kiến
này do Hội đồng Toà Thánh về Tân Phúc-Âm-hoá đề ra nhằm mời
gọi các giáo hội địa phương trên toàn thế giới mở cửa nhà thờ trong
hai ngày 13-14 tháng Ba 2015 để các tín hữu đến lãnh nhận bí tích
Hoà giải và chầu Mình Thánh Chúa. Chủ đề “24 giờ cho Chúa” năm
nay là “Thiên Chúa giàu lòng thương xót” (Êphêxô 2,4).Việc mở
Năm Thánh 2015 diễn ra nhân dịp kỷ niệm 50 năm bế mạc Công
đồng Vatican II vào năm 1965. Điều này thật ý nghĩa, vì Năm
Thánh sẽ thúc đẩy Giáo hội tiếp tục công trình mà Vatican II đã
khởi sự.
Với “Năm Thánh Lòng Thương xót”, Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô
muốn đặt trọng tâm nơi lòng thương xót của Thiên Chúa, Đấng mời
gọi các tín hữu trở về với Người. Gặp gỡ Chúa sẽ giúp chúng ta biết
thực thi lòng thương xót.
3- Các việc cử hành trong Năm Thánh Lòng Thương Xót :
Nghi thức khai mạc Năm Thánh là việc mở Cửa Thánh. Cửa này
là cửa chỉ được mở trong thời gian diễn ra Năm Thánh và đóng lại
vào tất cả các năm khác. Bốn Đại Vương cung thánh đường ở Roma
đều có Cửa Thánh, đó là các Vương cung thánh đường: Thánh
Phêrô, Thánh Gioan Latêranô, Thánh Phaolô Ngoại thành và Đức
Bà Cả. Nghi thức mở Cửa Thánh biểu trưng ý nghĩa: trong Năm
Thánh, các tín hữu được ban cho một “con đường đặc biệt” để
hưởng Ơn cứu rỗi. Các Cửa Thánh của các Vương cung thánh
đường khác cũng sẽ được mở sau khi mở Cửa Thánh Vương cung
thánh đường Thánh Phêrô.
Như một phương cách đề cao tầm quan trọng của sự tha thứ và
canh tân mối tương quan của mỗi người chúng ta với Thiên Chúa,
ơn toàn xá sẽ được ban trong Năm Thánh. Ân xá là việc tha các hình
phạt tạm vì tội, thường được ban cho những tín hữu hành hương đến
Rôma cùng với một số điều kiện khác: xưng tội, rước lễ, cầu nguyện
theo ý Đức giáo hoàng và thực hiện việc những việc bác ái đơn giản
như thăm viếng bệnh nhân ...
Những ai không thể hành hương đến Rôma cũng có thể được
hưởng ân xá bằng cách xưng tội và rước lễ, cầu nguyện theo ý Đức
giáo hoàng, khi đi viếng hay tham dự một cử hành phụng vụ chung
tại một nhà thờ được Đức giám mục địa phương chỉ định.

Cha Cố, Michael J. McGivney, đã thành lập
Hội Hiệp Sĩ Columbus từ năm 1882. Ngài đã đấu tranh để giải
quyết nhu cầu phục vụ cấp bách trong lúc nhiệm sở cho Cộng
Đoàn Giáo Xứ của Cha, từ cấu tạo của nhóm nam giới, chung
một tâm huyết xây dựng Cộng Đoàn dân Thánh Chúa. Mục
đích này vẫn tồn tại đến nay dựa trên 3 chủ yếu:
1- Bác ái trong gia đình và Cộng Đoàn.
2- Kiến tạo Hoà Bình trong ý nguyện tích cực để phát triển và
hoàn tất nhiều kết quả.
3- Luôn kết tình anh em trong Chúa yêu mến nhau. Rất tha
thiết mời gọi anh em nam giới, với tinh thần nhiệt thành tham
gia vào Hiệp Hội, để nối tiếp sứ vụ của niềm tin bằng lời
nói và việc làm cụ thể. Một kinh nghiệm tốt xả thân phục vụ
tất cả dân Thánh trong Giáo Hội Chúa.

Día Internacional de Oración y Concientización Contra la Trata de Personas – 8 de Febrero
El Papa Francisco ha llamado a la comunidad católica a tomar
parte en la lucha contra la trata de personas. La trata de personas es la 2da empresa ilegal más grande y de más rápido
crecimiento en el Sur de California. Sin embargo, dado que está
creciendo a un ritmo más rápido que el tráfico de drogas, podría
convertirse en la mayor industria ilegal en unos pocos años con
nuestros hijos siendo el objetivo principal para el tráfico de
sexo. El tráfico laboral es un problema aún más grande en todo
el mundo y persiste en barrios locales, hogares, empresas e industrias. El 8 de Febrero es día de Santa Josefina Bakhita quien
fue secuestrada y fue vendida a la esclavitud en los años 1800.
En el día de su santo, se le pide a la comunidad católica a orar y
tomar acción en la lucha contra la trata de personas. Tres acciones que podemos tomar que harán la diferencia son:
1. Orar por la sanación de las víctimas y para que Dios cambie
el corazón de los traficantes.
2. Proteger a las víctimas más probables. La victimas más probables de la trata de personas son los hijos de crianza, los
jóvenes sin hogar, los pobres y los inmigrantes. Por esta razón
podemos considerar la posibilidad de convertirnos en padres de
crianza y mentores. También podemos ser voluntarios para Caridades Católicas, la cual es la caridad más grande en los Estados Unidos con un enfoque en el cuidado de los pobres y los
inmigrantes.
3. Asegurarse de que cualquier compra de productos importados como el té, café y azúcar, estén marcados “comercio justo”,
lo que significa que no fue utilizada mano de obra esclava en el
cultivo, fabricación y distribución de ese producto.
