Christmas Wafer - Oplatek
Sharing of the oplatek
(pronounced opwatek) is the
most ancient and beloved of all
Polish Christmas tradi ons.
Oplatek is a thin wafer made of
flour and water, similar in taste
to the hosts that are used for
communion during Mass. The
Christmas wafer is shared before
the Christmas Eve supper. The
head of the household usually
starts by breaking the wafer with
his wife and then con nues to
share it with everyone at the
table. Wishes for peace and
prosperity are exchanged and
even the pets and farm animals
are given a piece of oplatek on
Christmas Eve. Legend has it that
if animals eat oplatek on
Christmas Eve, they will be able
to speak in human voices at
midnight, but only those who are
pure of spirit will be able to hear
them.
This tradi on dates back many
centuries when a thin, flat bread
called podplomyk was baked over
an open flame and then shared
with the family gathered around
the fire on Christmas Eve.
Pa erns would be cut onto the
bread to make breaking easier.
This is why oplatek today s ll
have pa erns on them, usually of
Na vity scenes.
The Christmas Wafer will be
available in the Resource/Gi
Center at the ves bule of the
Church a er all the weekend
Masses. The cost is $2.00 for an
envelope containing three
wafers.

Christmas
Caroling Event
On December
20th, and as part of our con nuing
Centennial Celebra on, we will
have a Christmas Caroling
event. This free event is here at St
Barbara in the Parish Center at 3:00

Christmas Carols outside of Mass,
we thought it would be fun to sing

caroling, hot chocolate and
cookies. All are welcome,
especially families, for this free
event. Please bring some cookies
for the sharing table, and wear
your favorite holiday wear or an
ugly Christmas sweater. If you

informa on, please contact
[email protected], or call
708-704-8525. Hope to see you
there!

Desde el escritorio del Párroco…
“In passing through the Holy Door, then, may we feel
that we ourselves are part of this mystery of love, of
tenderness. Let us set aside all fear and dread, for these
do not befit men and women who are loved. Instead, let
us experience the joy of encountering that grace which
transforms all things.”
Pope Francis—December 8, 2015
“Que el atravesar la Puerta Santa, por lo tanto, haga que
nos sintamos par cipes de este misterio de amor.
Abandonemos toda forma de miedo y temor, porque no
es propio de quien es amado; vivamos, más bien, la
alegría del encuentro con la gracia que lo transforma todo.”
Papa Francisco—diciembre 8, 2015
On the Feast of the Immaculate Concep on, Pope
Francis opened the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica in
Rome and announced the beginning of a Jubilee of
Mercy. In the year ahead, everyone in our Church is
encouraged not only to pray for God’s mercy for
themselves, but also to extend that mercy to others.
The Holy Door at St. Peter’s becomes a powerful
symbol for us. Can we be like that door? Can we open
ourselves up to receive the love and mercy that God
wishes to offer us?
puerta? ¿Podamos abrirnos a recibir el gran amor y
misericordia que Dios nos quiere ofrecer?
It can be so easy to live our life behind closed doors,
unwilling or unable to receive the gi s of forgiveness,
mercy, and peace. This year invites us to unlock our
hearts and give welcome to the great love that God
has for us.
A door not only serves to welcome in, however. A
door also serves as a means to go out. Can we use this
year of mercy to consider how we will extend God’s
mercy to the world around us? All to o en we choose
to hold onto resentments and refuse to let go of our
prejudices and assump ons. This year invites us to
step through the door of mercy and begin a journey
together on the path that will take us away from sin
and darkness and lead us onward to the bright
promise of new life in God.
Here at St. Barbara, we do not have a Holy Door. But
we do have a Niche of Mercy. During the next twelve
months, I hope that we can have placed in that niche
images of God’s great mercy to remind us of who we
are called to be as God’s children. To begin, we now
have hanging in the niche the image of the Divine
Mercy. Down the road, however, we can place other
images of God’s mercy. The Return of the Prodigal
Son, for example, is an oil pain ng by Rembrandt that
beau fully depicts mercy in the loving embrace of a
father and son. If you have other images of mercy that
you’d like us to consider, please send me your
sugges ons. Let us pray that we may keep our hearts
and minds centered on God’s great love for all people.

Secrets to Happiness
5. Sundays should be
holidays. Workers should have
Sundays off because “Sunday is for family,” he said.
6. Find innova ve ways to create dignified jobs for
young people. “We need to be crea ve with young
people. If they have no opportuni es they will get
into drugs” and be more vulnerable to suicide, he
said. ”It's not enough to give them food,” he
said. “Dignity is given to you when you can bring
food home” from one’s own labor.

for Religious
Please give to
those who have given a life me.
“My life is ed to the liturgy and
the Eucharist,” says Precious
Blood Sister Ann Hipp, 95, who
entered religious life in 1937. “It’s
part of who we are as a
community.” As a teacher for 50
years, she shared this love of the
Eucharist with her students. At
age 70, Sister Ann traded in her
chalk for a sewing needle and
today s ll helps cra altar cloths
and vestments.
Like Sister Ann, tens of
thousands of senior sisters,
brothers, and religious order
priests have dedicated their lives
to sharing their faith. Genera ons
of Catholics recall with gra tude
their work in Catholic schools,
hospitals, and social service
agencies. Yet years of ministering
for li le or no pay came at a
price, and now their religious
communi es lack adequate
savings for re rement and
eldercare. Your gi to the

more. Please be generous.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
December 13, 2015
Pope Francis chose to
inaugurate the Jubilee Year of
Mercy last Tuesday because
December 8th marks the fi ieth
anniversary of the closing of
Va can II. That council, Pope
Francis reminds us, inaugurated a
new phase in the Church’s
history. The Spirit called the
Church to tear down the walls
that for far too long had made it
a fortress, and to proclaim the
gospel in a new, more accessible
way. Pope Francis quotes Saint
John XXIII in declaring the
Church’s preference for “the
medicine of mercy,” and Blessed
Paul VI in proposing the Good
Samaritan as our model for
discipleship (Misericordiae
Vultus, 4). Pope Francis adds that
God’s mercy is “the bea ng heart
of the Gospel,” and that mercy
“must penetrate the
heart and mind” of every disciple
(MV, 12). Three mes today’s
Gospel asks, “What should I do?”
Pope Francis would say: Imitate
Jesus, who came not wielding the
fiery judgment that John the
Bap st had threatened, but
instead impar ng healing,
compassion, forgiveness—mercy!
