Messages from our Leadership
Dear Friends of Holy Trinity,
It is with great excitement that I begin my term as the Chair of the Holy Trinity High School Board of Trustees
in this, our 105th year of educating Chicago’s youth. It is a privilege to lead a board and community so committed
to the values of the Brothers of Holy Cross and the mission of the school. The dedication of our donors, parents,
faculty, staff and friends is what makes it possible for Holy Trinity to provide a quality Catholic education to all
deserving students.
2013-14 was a record-breaking year at Holy Trinity! We raised $433,638 for The Fund for Holy Trinity, the most
in school history. Our March gala, Guardians of Hope, also surpassed all goals and records, boasting over 550 guests
and raising over $600,000 in support of the Financial Assistance Fund. In January, we celebrated the closing of our
Centennial Capital Campaign, which exceeded its $7.5 million goal, raising $8.3 million. We have already seen
incredible capital improvements around Holy Trinity because of this campaign, including our technology-filled
university classrooms and $1 million science labs, as well as helped support hundreds of students in need of financial
assistance. Thank you to each of you who helped make these incredible successes a reality.
I am confident that these successes will carry on into the 2014-15 school year. This year marks the fourth year of our
strategic plan, which means big fundraising goals, more capital improvements and enhancements to our curriculum.
We welcome to Holy Trinity this year, Principal Marianne Lynch, who brings with her vast experience in Catholic
education and fresh ideas for continuing Holy Trinity on the path of educational excellence. As we embark on this
new year together, I’d like to thank you, the Holy Trinity family, for your continued support. Your commitment
provides invaluable educational opportunities for our students.
Sincerely,
Laura Clark, Board of Trustees Chair
Dear Holy Trinity High School Family and Friends,
As a Holy Cross institution, our goals center on educating a new generation of leaders who will positively influence
our world. We strive to place our students in diverse situations where they can demonstrate their commitment to
values and their ability to develop creative solutions to difficult problems. I am beyond proud of how Holy Trinity
students rise to the occasion and stand out in these situations, whether it is traveling to Ghana for a service project,
interning at a Fortune 500 company, or working with fellow Holy Cross students at a leadership conference.
The Class of 2014 demonstrated this spirit in all that they accomplished here, while continuing the tradition by
becoming the ninth consecutive class to achieve 100 percent college acceptance. We confidently look forward to
their impact on the world.
To create an environment that inspires leadership, you need strong examples. As we begin our 105th year of service
to Chicago, we are excited to welcome a new academic leader to our campus. Mrs. Marianne Lynch has won
our community over in just a few months with her kind heart, her dedicated work ethic and her commitment to
providing each student with a strong college preparatory and faith-based secondary education. Her ability to lead
teachers, students and our community is already obvious and has everyone excited about the future. On behalf of
the entire Holy Trinity community, I would like to thank Brian Richards for his work over the last three years as
Chair of the Board of Trustees and welcome our new Chair, Laura Clark. We are excited for many great things under
these two experienced new leaders.
As we begin this school year with our largest enrollment in five years, our community is confident about our impact
upon the lives of our students. For providing Holy Trinity with the resources to continue to produce a life-changing
experience on Division Street, we honor you with our Annual Report. Your incredible generosity continues the
Holy Cross tradition of enriching the minds and hearts of our students while building the foundation for our future
leaders.
In Holy Cross,
Timothy M. Bopp, President

Principal Lynch:
An innovative leader
Holy Trinity High School welcomes Principal Marianne Lynch. She comes to Holy Trinity
from Seton Academy in South Holland, Ill., where she served as principal. Mrs. Lynch
brings with her more than 30 years of experience in Chicago Catholic schools and a strong
record of educational leadership both as a school administrator and classroom teacher. We
sat down with Principal Lynch to discuss her vision and educational values.
Could you share a little about your background as an educator?
I began my career teaching high school English in the Chicago Public School system and then taught overseas in an
American School in Liberia for five years. When I returned to Chicago, I began working for a school in the Archdiocese
of Chicago and have remained in Catholic education ever since. This provided my own grounding for life in both faith
and education, and I believe it has helped me provide similar grounding for others. Eventually I went back to school
for a graduate degree in political science and international relations. I found it exciting to return to the other side of the
classroom. Most recently, I spent five years as the principal at Seton Academy. During that time, I oversaw a one-to-one
technology program and helped increase the average ACT score by three points through data analysis and curriculum
alignment. Now, I’m excited about the opportunities on the horizon at Holy Trinity.
What attracted you to Holy Trinity?
Holy Trinity is a diverse and special school right in the heart of the city. I was drawn to the mission and smaller-school
model, which allows faculty and staff to truly get to know each student—to understand their needs, their strengths, and
what drives them. Additionally, Holy Trinity offers me the opportunity to continue to do what I love: working with
teens, their families and their teachers to help each of them recognize their limitless potential. It does so in an atmosphere
imbued with a spirit of family, faith, and zeal. What a great word to describe the atmosphere created by a group of
dedicated people who love what they do!
What do you see as the biggest opportunities for Holy Trinity in the coming years?
As a college preparatory school, we are committed to helping each student succeed in our halls, in college and in life.
Building on the work of recent years, we plan to strengthen the curriculum through enhanced learning technology, the
addition of Advanced Placement courses and innovative instruction like College 101 (a college preparation course for
juniors) and our new BSTEM program. We will continue to look at ways to increase enrollment and build upon the
quality of education and the environment we provide, to ensure what we offer is worth the investment we ask of families,
supporters and scholarship agencies. This should be reflected in both the success of our students and in increasing test
scores as a common measure of educational achievement in society today.
How would you describe your leadership style?
I believe collaboration is a key ingredient in the success of any organization. It is based on respect for others, an
understanding of our interdependence and belief in the value of diverse knowledge and ideas. No one individual can
know or do everything. Together we are much smarter, stronger and more creative. Listening to the input from others,
creating cohesion and providing a shared vision and sense of direction that supports our mission are essential elements of
good democratic leadership. However, there are times when a leader must direct and take responsibility for decisions in
the best interest of the organization. I strive to achieve this balance.
2
What are your thoughts on the current
educational landscape of Chicago?
The educational landscape of Chicago has changed
drastically in the past two decades. Magnet schools
introduced the first major change as they grew in
number and drew the best and brightest students
out of neighborhood public schools. This led to
a series of greater issues in public schools. At the
same time, Catholic schools were becoming more
expensive with the shift to lay faculties, leaving
many families unable to afford them. Those who
are able often move to neighborhoods with better
public schools. The rise of charter schools provides
another free alternative to local public schools that
struggle to serve a largely underserved population.
As a result, Catholic schools face increasingly
greater competition and are constantly challenged
to prove their value. Underlying the dynamics
of this landscape is inequality in funding, which
makes access to quality education, public or
private, increasingly difficult for many students
and their families. Our opportunity at Holy Trinity
is to continue demonstrating to Chicago youth
and their families that an excellent and affordable
school in the city is not out of reach.
What are you most excited about in the
upcoming school year?
I am excited about helping both students and
teachers reach their goals. I am energized by seeing
positive results from all of the effort, past and
present, invested in continuing to develop quality
programming to enable HT students to be their
very best. I also look forward to a few good pep
rallies, sporting events and celebrations along the
way!
What are some of your best memories of high
school?
I remember the camaraderie and the excitement
of meeting new people and making new friends.
The ability to expand my horizons beyond my
immediate neighborhood for the first time was
incredibly exciting. Especially wonderful for our
family was sharing my high school years with a
foreign exchange student whose college years were
spent with us. Dances, plays, working in the main
office, woolen uniforms and hush puppy shoes are
all essential parts of my high school memories.

Introducing
BSTEM
Holy Trinity’s new
honors program takes a
fresh look at preparing
students for bright and
successful futures.
At
the start of the 2014-15 school year, Holy Trinity
High School introduced an innovative new
program, the Business, Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math (BSTEM) Honors Program. This program differs
from traditional STEM programs, which give students
advanced skills in science, technology, engineering and
math. BSTEM takes those skills and combines them with
the business skills that students will need for advanced
degrees and real world application.
“The philosophy behind the BSTEM program is thinking
about how to put traditional STEM curriculum into a
practical framework,” Assistant Principal Patrick Kelly
explained. “For example, in the BSTEM introduction to
computer science course, we look at specific businesses as
the students do projects. They recently did a project on
hacking, and we used real-world examples to help them
understand how these concepts affect real people and
businesses.”
The Class of 2018 is the first Holy Trinity class with the
BSTEM Honors Program available to them. There are
23 students currently enrolled in the program. Students
were selected for the program based on their high school
entrance exam scores, their seventh and eighth grade test
scores and grades, and their interest and aptitude in science
and math.
“”
I feel really lucky to be part of
the BSTEM program. I think it will
open up great opportunities for
me in the future.
-Natalie Nieves ‘18
The math and science department is in the process of
developing the full BSTEM curriculum. Students in the
program will take honors courses beginning their freshman
year, including honors biology, honors BSTEM computer
integration (Intro to computer science), and honors algebra
or geometry. As they advance through their high school
careers and the BSTEM program, they will continue into
AP courses as upperclassmen. AP courses planned to be
available at Holy Trinity by 2016 include AP economics,
AP physics, AP chemistry, and AP computer science.
Juniors in the BSTEM program will be able to take Holy
Trinity’s Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE)
course, which is a year-long business course in which
students prepare for careers in business. Students learn
to develop their own business models and gain practical
skills like writing resumes and interviewing for jobs.
They compete in citywide and national business model
competitions.
Holy Trinity’s administration is excited about the
possibilities available as the BSTEM curriculum is
developed.
“With the unique skill set our faculty members possess, it
allows us the opportunity to expose our students to realworld experiences,” President Tim Bopp said. “We are able
to build a well-rounded curriculum for our students by
utilizing the professional experience of our faculty, which
includes an engineer, an accountant, and a technology
expert.”
BSTEM students will be able to take summer courses at
the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago to advance
their specific learning needs. Course opportunities range
from programming and visual design using processing
language, to OS virtualization, configuration and
automation, to creating a sensor network and platform for
use in a high-altitude weather balloon.
BSTEM students will have the opportunity to become
members of prestigious academic and professional societies
like the National Business Honor Society (Holy Trinity is
anticipated to join by 2016) and Business Professionals of
America.
The BSTEM program strives to provide more than just
advanced academics and professional opportunities for its
students. BSTEM students will leave the program equipped
with the skills necessary to succeed in the college classroom
and in life. Mr. Kelly explained that one the most
important aspects of the program is that it is collaborative
both on the class and individual level.
“As the honors algebra class is working on order of
operations, I focus on HTML in the BSTEM computer
course, which forces students to pay attention to detail,
something that is necessary for order of operations,” Mr.
Kelly said. “I try to emphasize that in math, if you miss a
detail, you lose a point, but in the real world, if you miss
a detail, even something as small as a bracket, the whole
operation doesn’t work. By the time these students reach
the NFTE class their junior year, they will be trained in a
detail-oriented, collaborative mind set.”
Natalie Nieves ‘18, is one of the first members of
the BSTEM Honors Program. She graduated from
St. Stanislaus Kostka Elementary School and said that
her favorite class in the BSTEM program has been her
technology course.
“I really like HTML coding,” Natalie said. “We use a
program called Code Academy and learn the ins and outs
of coding. We get to see parts of a website that no one
usually sees. I feel really lucky to be part of the BSTEM
program. I feel like I’m a lot more advanced in my classes
than I would be at any other school, and I think it will
open up great opportunities for me in the future.”

Holy Trinity hosts Math and
Technology Camp
This summer, Holy Trinity hosted a Math and Technology Camp
for middle school students. 20 students participated in the
camp, which was led by Assistant Principal Patrick Kelly, faculty
member Angela Miceli, Leo Neri ‘14, and Will Data ‘15.
The campers learned how to design their own computer games
over the course of the week-long camp. Students worked
with the camp leaders to learn about math, computer science
and game design. The campers spent the mornings learning
design and aspects of what makes a computer game fun. In the
afternoons, the students learned the math behind what makes
programming work.
“Our goal was not a classroom and worksheet experience, but
rather an interactive, blended learning experience,” Mr. Kelly
said.” We tried to pull everything the students were working on
in a broad-brush way, showing them how the math skills they
practiced directly related to the games they were designing.”
After the success of the camp, Holy Trinity is hosting a follow up
Game Day for campers to return to Holy Trinity this month and
work in teams to create a computer game. Campers will create an
original computer game and Holy Trinity students will test the
games and choose a winning game.
Class of 2018 welcomed with first-ever Convocation
On Thursday, August 28, Holy Trinity High School celebrated its first ever Convocation. The word convocation means “coming
together,” and this ceremony brought together all parts of the Holy Trinity community: students, families, faculty, staff, Board of
Trustees and Advisory Council members, and school administration.
Convocation celebrated the start of Holy Trinity’s 105th school year and welcomed the Class of 2018 into the Holy Trinity
community. The students and their families were addressed by Principal Marianne Lynch, Board Chair Laura Clark, President
Timothy Bopp, and Robert Walker, Holy Trinity Class of 2004 and recent graduate of Northwestern University Law School. The
students were encouraged to not only take advantage of all the opportunities Holy Trinity has to offer, but to make the school their
own, creating an even better environment for future Holy Trinity students. At a reception after Convocation, Mr. Jim Rolfes, Chair
of The Fund for Holy Trinity, addressed attendees about the important role The Fund for Holy Trinity plays in the everyday lives of
students.
Holy Trinity will celebrate Convocation each year as a way to gather the school community together in welcoming the incoming
freshman class. Just as Robing Ceremony at the end of the students’ senior year helps them to reflect on their time at Holy Trinity,
Convocation will prepare the students for four years of success in high school.
