2012 CSHA President’s
Report
The pace of change in biological and
biomedical sciences in laboratories
around the world is stunning. Every
agency, whether
governmental or
private, that supports these endeavors
has to balance the impact on human
health, agriculture and the environment
with hard-to-evaluate blue skies
research which may have no immediate
payoff. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s
scientists have long pursued
fundamental biological research, and this effort is reflected in
our educational programs that focus on basic biological
processes such as transcription, RNA processing and protein
synthesis or methodological approaches such as imaging,
electrophysiology, proteomics or X-ray crystallography.
Increasingly, however, translational or applied approaches
that are much closer to the clinic or the farm make
appearances at the Laboratory’s meetings and courses in the
form of individual talks, sessions or even themes of an entire
program. This is a good thing, because it exposes young
scientists to the idea that what they do may have real societal
impact in the years ahead. But too much of a good thing can
be bad, and excessive emphasis on outcomes may be
counterproductive, because the freedom to experiment
becomes relegated to a distant second place.

conferences provide opportunities to share and discuss new
discoveries and findings, irrespective of their immediate
monetary or societal value. This is not to argue that scientific
research should simply be funded for its own sake, but rather
because the next research breakthrough is inherently
unpredictable – we simply cannot say from where the next
discovery will appear. Predictions about the future of society
even a few years hence are notoriously unreliable;
predictions about future scientific discoveries are probably
even more fanciful. Scientists young and old must be allowed
– at least to some extent - to be driven by their curiosity,
rather than by the strategic plans of funding agencies or
government departments. The next big thing is just around
the corner, only none of us know what it will be, or around
which corner it may come.
2012 marks an expansion of
CSHA. The total number of our
meeting has grown to 17, which
is a significant expansion from
13 in 2011.Expansion naturally
comes with challenges. And the
challenges that CSHA faced in
2012 were not only in the
operational level, but most
importantly were in terms of the
quality and nature of our
meetings. The following
highlights are some of our
answers to those challenges:
Integration of Science from the Asia-Pacific Region
Right in the beginning of CSHA's establishment, we strongly
believed that CSHA's scientific meeting programs should
reflect the latest scientific progress in the Asia-Pacific region.
Besides, CSHA should be, and ought to be, an open and
neutral platform for all scientists throughout this region to
organize meetings for their research topics, to present their
data and to discuss their works. In the past three years, most
of our meetings were predominantly occupied by science
from outside of this region. With the rapid expansion of
CSHA's conference list in 2012, eventually we were able to
assimilate the latest research from this region into our
programs by reaching out more local scientific communities.
For example, the conference on “bone and cartilage biology”
was a direct result of a visit to a Korea University that was
ended by a proposal from a Korean scientist who had been
looking for organization to host meeting for this growing
community. Meetings in plant epigenetics and ion channel
were results of interactions with teams of Chinese scientists in
various schools. And the meeting on neural circuits and
behavior was brewed during a visit to a Japanese lab.All
these examples represented CSHA efforts in committing itself
as an open and neutral platform for scientific discussion.
In Cold Spring Harbor Asia’s third year of operation, it is
noteworthy that the academic program of conferences shares
this dichotomy between basic and applied research, with
some events focused on the fundamentals such as RNA
biology, epigenetics or plant stress, while others address
diseases in the liver, bone & cartilage, or the immune system.
While CSHA programs should indeed explore pathways of
research that may yield new therapeutics, diagnostics and
other products of benefit to humankind, we should not ignore
the value – and excitement - of discovery in its own right.
Investigating the unknown is unpredictable and risky, since the
outcome cannot be known ahead of time, but may be
immensely rewarding both in terms of intellectual curiosity

CSHA Meetings with More Asian Characters
As the sole scientific meeting program in the Asia-Pacific
region, CSHA understands its irreplaceable and indispensible
role in promoting science with regional characters within its
programs. In addition to adding more meetings to our list
from local communities, CSHA also tried to organize
meetings with topics unique, or especially interested in the
Asia-Pacific region. Meetings in infectious diseases, liver
metabolism and diseases are examples that fall into this
category. And we are committed to organize more meetings
in those Asia specific areas in the years to come.
Make CSHA More Accessible to Local Students
In the past 3 years, we have spent a great deal of our energy
in understanding the particular needs from local schools and
students in order to make our programs more accessible and
more helpful to them. As a result, in 2012 we renewed an
even more generous package called “Watson Program”, or
WP, in addition to many existing packages that are tailormade to local students. WP basically is a free auditing
mechanism for students at the very beginning of their
scientific career. They come to CSHA's meeting in an
organized and chaperoned way. This mechanism not only
lowers the hurdle of CSHA's meetings to local students, but
more importantly it ensures the students participation in
CSHA's meeting in a more responsible and beneficial way.
After roughly a year's practice, this program has became so
popular that more than 40 top Chinese universities have
entered agreements with CSHA. And towards the end of
2012, CSHA has also applied this program to students from
Hong Kong and Taiwan. Now we are also considering the
possibility of open WP to students in Korea, Singapore and
beyond.

The 3rd Computational and Cognitive Neurobiology Summer
School was held in Beijing, China. The objective of this course is to
train in Computational Neuroscience talented and highly motivated
students and postdocs from Asia and other countries in the world.
Students are with either quantitative, including Physics, Mathematics,
Engineering and Computer Science or experimental background.
The lectures introduced the basic concepts and methods, as well as
cutting-edge research, in Computational and Systems/Cognitive
Neurosciences. Modeling will be taught at multiple levels, ranging
from subcellular processes, single neuron computation, to
microcircuits and large-scale systems. Matlab-based programming
labs coordinated with the lectures provided practical training in
important computational methods.

meeting video archives, meeting photo albums, online courses and public lectures. Access to some of
these resources depends on prior attendance at an individual meeting. Other resources are open or
require a simple free registration process.
Cold Spring Harbor Asia offers archived streaming video of the oral sessions of each meeting through
this Leading Strand web site. Speakers could choose whether their talks are recorded or not. If the talk is
allowed to be recorded, the video will be available to review for meeting attendees only and on a
password-accessible basis. Otherwise, speakers’ talks will not be archived or recorded at all.

2011, the third year of Cold Spring Harbor Asia consisted with 17 conferences (6 spring conferences and 11 fall conferences) and 1
summer course. Many conferences are becoming real series meetings, which keep on repeating every 1 or 2 years, such as the
epigenetics meeting, the system biology meeting, etc. More than 3100 scientists have joined CSH Asia’s meetings and course. Nobel
laureate Dr. Martin Chalfie attended and delivered his keynote lecture at the CSH Asia meeting on Invertebrate Neurobiology. CSH
Asia is glad to have a joint conference with ICMS for a meeting on Tumor Microenvironment.
Our statistics show that there were totally 2576 registrants (including 463 student auditors and 96 representatives from the local
biotech companies) from 49 countries who have participated in the seventeen meetings and the summer course. In general, female
participants took about 36.5% of the total participants.
