The NSD Scoop - National Service Dogs
“The NSD Scoop”
“enriching the quality of life and enhancing the independence
of children and families living with autism and special needs.”
June 2012
Braydon and NSD Whoopi
In July 2003 my beautiful daughter Evelyn welcomed
her baby brother Braydon to the world. Although
Braydon missed many early year milestones, he was
not diagnosed with moderate-severe autism until
2007 when he was four years old.
Our family quickly became overwhelmed with meeting
Braydon's most basic needs. What was most
troubling to us was how isolated our son was by his
disability, meaning his communication was very
limited and thus, he had no friends. It was to our
surprise and sheer delight when Braydon managed to
make a few. Unfortunately, his "friends" had four legs,
were really hairy, and drooled! Braydon's interest in
dogs was something we could not ignore. This began
our search for Braydon's new best friend.
In 2010 we read about National Service Dogs. During our first interview with NSD, we learned how
these amazing dogs assist with safety and provide many other benefits too. We were privileged to be
approved as a recipient of one of these incredible dogs free of charge; although, what a dog like this
would bring to our family would be worth millions. (Continued on next page)

Braydon & NSD Whoopi
Two weeks ago, National Service Dogs gave us a two year old Golden Retriever
named Whoopi. My husband and I spent an entire week learning how to use her
in the capacity of a Certified Service Dog before bringing her home to meet
Braydon.
The first time Braydon saw Whoopi, he was not impressed. He ran out of the
house screaming and crying; however, the placement is going much better now
and Braydon’s bond with Whoopi grows stronger each day. Just two days after
bringing her home, my son was having a total meltdown in the bath and my
husband decided to bring Whoopi into the room. Like magic, Braydon calmed
down. Braydon holds onto a handle on her special Service Dog vest and is also
tethered to Whoopi by a belt around his waist. This prevents Braydon from
bolting, hence how these dogs assist with safety since Braydon is almost nine
years old and doesn't want to hold mommy and daddy's hand anymore.
Whoopi helps Braydon in other more profound ways too. To us, it is clear she
helps Braydon manage his anxieties and maintain focus while out in public. Just
last week, Braydon was able to sit through an entire two hour school concert with
the help of his dog. While walking with her in public his pace is leisurely and his
body is relaxed. So relaxed that if you had never met Braydon before, you would
never suspect he has Autism. What this means is our family is finally able to
explore the world around us all together. Previously, one of us would have to stay
home with Braydon while the other attended the school concert. This is no longer
the case, and this means we can spend more time together. You can imagine how
isolated all of us were because of Braydon's disability. This is still very new to us,
and extraordinarily liberating.

Tips & Reminders
Pet Insurance
It is best to be prepared for
emergencies before they
happen. Think about what you
would do if an expensive
medical emergency
unexpectedly came up with
your service dog. If you know
the cost would be difficult to
manage, you should look into
pet insurance now rather than
later. There are many different
companies so do your research
to choose what works best for
you. Some companies provide
discounts for service dogs so
don’t forget to mention this
when getting your quote.
Written by Jenny, Braydon’s mom. You can follow Jenny’s blog about Braydon
and NSD Whoopi at www.mommy-confessions.blogspot.ca.
Did You know?
As accredited members of assistance dogs international (ADI), NSD works at or above the
international standards created to govern the training, matching and after care of NSD’s
dogs and clients. ADI sets the standards for a dog’s temperament, ability to perform its
required function as well as its behaviour with the client and out in public. Every Certified
Service Dog Team must pass a rigorous public access test and meet the public access
standard laid out by ADI. Some of the key features of this test and standard are:
• Dog does not solicit attention from the general public.
• Dog does not bark, growl or whine.
• Dog shows no aggression.
• Dog does not solicit or steal food from the general public.
• Dog works calmly on leash.
• Dog is trained to urinate and defecate on command.
All of the training NSD dogs receive in the Puppy and Advanced Training Program is
geared toward preparing them to meet these standards of behaviour.

NSD Puppy Camp (NEW)
In May, we held our first Puppy Camp for the NSD dogs
waiting to be recalled for our next Advanced Training class.
The principle was to help transition the new dogs into
kennel life and teach them the daily routines that would
help them be more prepared for their next stage of training.
We had 10 to 12 dogs per week for two weeks so we could
give each dog plenty of one-on-one time. The camp
activities were staged so the dogs confidence would grow
over the few days they were here. We covered skills and
activities such as basic kennel manners, feeding routines,
and appropriate behaviour in our runs and in the Gail
Dubrek dog park. In addition, they were introduced to the
training vans, the traveling crates, the relaxation room, and
the evening volunteer routines.
We had a great time with the enthusiastic new dogs. It also
gave staff and volunteers an opportunity to get to know and
assess the dogs prior to coming in. We were able to match
up future kennel roommates and highlight dogs that may
have problems adjusting to kennel life. Any highlighted dogs
were then matched with families or individuals who have
volunteered to help on our new Weekday Sitter Program.
This is a new program where dogs can go home to local
families after work each day and then be returned for work
by the next morning. We hope that this new program will
help alleviate stress in the dogs who are more sensitive
than others.
Of course, we couldn't have run camp without the help of our
Puppy Camp volunteers. Some even showed up at 8:00
a.m. to help give breakfast to the dogs and relieve them
before cleaning the kennels. Chris McArthur, our Puppy Program Coordinator, worked tirelessly from
morning until night, in addition to making sure her regular day duties were taken care of. A big thanks
goes to all who participated.
Our Dedicated Helpers Left to right: Pat Pooley, Marg
Mannel, Karen Eakins, Chris McArthur, Marilyn Johnston
We're all looking forward to another Puppy Camp following the November graduation.

NSD Breeding Program
NSD Lindor’s K litter puppies are all in class now and doing very nicely. They've settled down to be
calm and quiet individuals now that their handlers have established an assertive but gentle manner.
Like all puppies, they would seize the opportunity to do their own thing if given the chance. This a very
nice litter and they’re getting bigger by the minute.
NSD Isla’s L litter puppies are settling into their new homes now and have had their first couple of
puppy classes. They are already showing signs of being attentive, and share the same mischievous
attitude that Isla had when she was a young puppy. This was the first litter for Isla and the Langham
family so they were very sad to see the puppies go. We look forward to seeing these puppies progress
into adulthood.
NSD Daisy’s M litter puppies were just placed with their Puppy Raisers. There were lots of ooh's and
aah's from the staff and volunteers as we were waiting for their Raisers to come and collect them. Bob
and Susan, Daisy's Breeder Caretakers mentioned how quiet they were compared to Daisy's previous
litters. I wonder if their new Raisers think the same thing?
NSD Missy’s N litter has attracted a lot of attention. Being a 1/4 Bernese Mountain Dog and 3/4
Labrador Retriever, they are slightly different than what we are used to. The most obvious difference is
their bone substance which is stronger than most Labradors. We are patiently waiting to see how big
these puppies will grow! Wanda and Nick Spruyt, Missy's Breeder Caretakers, report how easy and
pleasant this litter has been to work with.
NSD Beta is currently in season and has been bred. Beta is a Jemma puppy and will carry on the
Jemma line now that she has retired. Beta’s puppies will be due around the end of July or early August.

“Since 2003, National Service Dogs (NSD) has been proud to be part of the Nestle Purina
family. Over the years, Purina Pro Plan has fed four generations of Service Dogs for
Autism. At any given time, NSD has 100 dogs going through the Service Dog Program
and they are all maintained on Pro Plan Diets.” Danielle Forbes, Executive Director, NSD
“We have found that the incidence of growth related problems while using Pro Plan
Large Breed Puppy have been minimal. In the past three years, we haven’t had any
health problems related to accelerated growth from diet. I can testify that this has not
been the case when I have used other brands of food in previous puppy programs.”
