Tonight?s card at the Meadowlands is chock full of stakes,
so we asked a slew of prominent industry types to give their
picks for who will win the two biggest stakes on the card ?
the $732,050 Crawford Farms Meadowlands Pace and the
$471,800 William R. Haughton Memorial.
TOM GROSSMAN (Owner Blue Chip Farms)
Pace: ?You must Roll With Joe ? Racing Hill to get sire Joe
a Meadowlands Pace winner in his first crop. If you have any
doubts go back and look at Joe?s Pace.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki is a monster. I can't bet against
him, though I have tremendous respect for both Wiggle and
Pete.?
BILL O?DONNELL (president Central Ontario Standardbred
Association)
Pace: ?My pick for the Meadowlands Pace is Control The
Moment. He's coming into the race fresh off his easy victory
in the elimination.?

Haughton: ?Always B Miki in the Haughton. A better post
position draw than Wiggle It Jiggleit makes him my pick.?
JUDY DAVIS-WILSON (Executive Administrator - Delaware
Standardbred Breeders' Fund)
Pace: ?Control The Moment will "Control The Moment" if he
blasts home like he did last week.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. Even though some can go just
as fast, he can carry it a long way.?
ROGER HUSTON (Hall of Fame race caller)
Pace: ?Control The Moment as I liked the effort last week
and don't like the off week for Racing Hill.?
Haughton: ?Wiggle It Jiggleit and Montrell Teague despite
post 10. Could work out to his advantage with the speed
inside.?
LINDA TOSCANO (Trainer)
Pace: ?Control The Moment finished very strong last week.
He will be tough to beat.?
Haughton: ?I love the FFA's this year. It's a throwback to
yesteryear when there were real free-for-all pacers and not
just nice open horses. These are the real deal. It's hard to bet
against Always B Miki. He's crazy fast, tough and can race
anyway he needs to.
BOB BONI (Northwood Bloodstock ? part-owner Always B Miki)
Pace: ?I like Control The Moment in the Meadowlands Pace
in a very competitive race with Racing Hill and Lyons Snyder.
His elimination was spectacular and I think he is coming
around for Brad Maxwell and I would not at all be surprised
if he moves to the head of the division from here on. I am
also a big fan of the certain next ?Hall of Fame?driver Brian
Sears.?
Haughton: ?As for the ?Haughton,?for obvious reasons I
strongly believe Always B Miki will prevail again.?
MURRAY BROWN (Hanover Shoe Farms / Hall of Fame publicity
man)
Pace: ?Racing Hill is the logical choice. He's in great form
and has most things in his favor. I can see Control The
Moment making it a real horse race, though. He appears to
be in top form, has a good position and having Brian Sears
does not hurt.?
Haughton: ?I'll go with Always B Miki. In my opinion, he's
the best, until one of the others show they are better. In
addition, I think he's got everything going for him. He's on a
big track, which he prefers. He's got a very favorable post
position, maybe the hottest and coolest driver in the country
and he appears to be in top form. If he makes the top
without too much expenditure, I don't see anybody catching
him.?
RON GURFEIN (Hall of Fame trainer)
Pace: ?Control The Moment was very good last week. Brad
Maxwell is great for the money. Racing Hill hurt by week off.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. May be the best there ever was.
We haven't seen the best yet and his only competition had a
horrid draw.?
ANTHONY MACDONALD (Trainer/ Driver; Thestable.ca)
Pace: ?Control The Moment has been a bit hit and miss this
year, but he certainly looked like the colt of old last week.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki in likely the toughest bunch of
aged pacers most of us have ever seen. He's not a lock, but
has position on his toughest foes.?
CASIE COLEMAN (Trainer)
Pace: ?I pick Control The Moment. He was a freak last year
and looks to be rounding back into form. Explosive move
down stretch last week. Racing Hill a game second
Haughton: ?Always B Miki is just in a league of his own,
and loves the big track. He is possibly the fastest horse I?ve
witnessed in my lifetime. Wiggle It and Freaky Pete second
and third best.?
FRANK M. ANTONACCI (Trainer)
Pace: ?Boston Red Rocks. He was sneaky good last week
and Timmy (Tetrick) always seems to find the right trip for
the Meadowlands Pace.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. Gets a nice rest week and will
be hard to beat especially with the post position draw of WIJI
and FFP.?
PETE SPEARS (President and CEO Standardbred Horse Sales
Company)
Pace: ?Racing Hill. Dominant at Pocono, peaking at right
time, great post.?
Harness Racing Update | 2 | July 16, 2016
Harness Raci ng Update
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. Monster at Pocono, perfect post,
competition way outside.?
GREG BLANCHARD (Raceway Manager ? The Raceway at The
Western Fair District)
BOB ROBERTS (Racing writer)
PACE: ?Control The Moment. Looked better than ever in his
elimination with a scintillating rally to win. Much better post
this time should put him well within striking range.?
Pace: ?Racing Hill looks the lone speed in the
Meadowlands Pace. Look for him to make the top and never
look back.?
Haughton: ?Give me Always B Miki, the in-form horse, in
the William Haughton. He'll probably appreciate the race's
added eighth of a mile more than others.?
BILL FINLEY: (Racing writer)
Pace: ?Control The Moment seems to be back on track after
showing so much promise at two. He is ready to deliver
winning effort in a minor upset.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki proved he's the king of this
loaded division with his win in Franklin. There?s no reason to
expect a different outcome this time.?
GARNET BARNSDALE (Handicapper, writer)
Pace: ?Racing Hill. This colt has shown great progression
and can be raced effectively in any style the driver chooses.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. The fastest horse in the race
draws inside his two main rivals. In my opinion, this race was
decided at the post position draw.?
MIKE KIMELMAN, JR. (Breeder)
Pace: ?I like Racing Hill. He is ready to shine his brightest
in the biggest moment, just like his sire Roll With Joe.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. Fresh with week off and has a
good post distance and big track won't hurt either
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. Has looked every bit the pacing
powerhouse everyone thought he would be. The horse to
beat in an incredible division.?
KEN MIDDLETON, JR. (Race caller ? Woodbine Entertainment
Group)
Pace: ?Control The Moment was a bit snake bitten until
last week's eye-catching score in off-the-pace fashion. I'll
look for lightning to strike twice for the Brad Maxwell pupil.
Haughton: ?Always B Miki had a week to freshen up while
others slugged it out in last week's Graduate Final. The
hottest horse in racing gets the edge again.?
MARK LOEWE (VP of Ohio Racing Operations, Penn National
Gaming)
Pace: ?Control The Moment?s victory last week was
exceptional. Moves inside and is in his second week with
HOFer Sears. That gives him the edge. If there is any kind of
flow don?t be surprised if Check Six is close at the end along
with Racing Hill and JK Will Power.?
Haughton: ?I like Always B Miki as his victory at Pocono
showed he is extremely versatile. Five-year-old against
four-year-olds and the post position draw gives him the
edge.?
JASON SETTLEMOIR (CEO and GM Meadowlands Racetrack)
Pace: ?Racing Hill. Looking for another big effort, razor
sharp.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. He has just been unbelievable.?
BRETT REVINGTON (Director of Racing ? Pompano Park)
Pace: ?Control The Moment. I?m hoping he?s regained his
two-year-old form and follows up his impressive elimination
win with another winning performance.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. David Miller should be able to
navigate a trip with the versatile Miki even at the extra
distance getting him to the winner?s circle.?
BOB MARKS (Author, former communications direction Perretti
Farms)
Pace: ?Racing Hill has the slight edge as there really isn?t
any diehard speed in here.?
Hauhgton: ?I?ll go with Always B Miki as I think he?s the
best. Not sure how the race unfolds but the long run to the
first turn and the trailers might aid outside speed leavers.?

SHANNON ?SUGAR?DOYLE (Race caller ? The Raceway at The
Western Fair District)
Pace: ?Racing Hill. Loving him, even more now, with the
extra week off to freshen up for this main event.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. Gets a great post to work with
and will enjoy the added distance. Tough to go against!?
JEFF GURAL (Owner Meadowlands, Vernon and Tioga Downs)
Pace: ?I have to go with Racing Hill as again I think the
week off is a big advantage, but then again Brain Sears
always seems to find a way to show up and win our big
purses.?
Haughton: ?Once again I have to pick Always B Miki as I
think the added distance will help along with the week off
and the better post.?
KIM RINKER (Ohio Sires Stakes administrator)
Pace: ?Racing Hill appears to be in the right form at the
right time, and ready to ?roll on?once again for this tough
trainer/driver combo.?
DAVE BROWER (Broadcaster, handicapper)
Pace: ?Control The Moment?s stretch move in the
elimination was nothing short of breathtaking, and from a
key, inside post, I expect him to be in prime, upset position to
knock off the favorite for Brian Sears.?
Haughton: ?As much as I'd like to pick against Always B
Miki, I simply cannot, as he's proven to be the best of this
free-for-all class for now and his ultimate versatility and
toughness will give him a big edge and push-button
response for Dave Miller.?
DOUG MCINTOSH (Trainer)
Pace: ?Control The Moment. From his elimination race he
looked awesome. This track can really pick some horses up.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. Great field, but this horse is five
and lightly raced. On his game. His main competitors are
both four-year-olds. With a warm night we could see 1:46
and a bit. Great night of racing.?
DARIN ZOCCALI (TVG, Daily Racing Form)
Haughton: ?Off that stunning last performance, I'd have to
give Always B Miki the edge in the Haughton, especially with
Wiggle It Jiggleit being saddled with the 10-hole.?
Pace: ?Control The Moment. Sensational turn of foot in his
elimination and appears to be the only one that can beat
Racing Hill in what looks like a two-horse race.?
TOM PEDULLA (Racing writer)
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. When the chips are down, I am
yet to be shown that the pair of Pete and Wiggle can best
him, so I will pick him until proven otherwise.?
Pace: ?Control The Moment repeats impressive elimination
effort.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki should get the best trip.?
DAWN LUPUL (WEG broadcaster and analyst)
Pace: ?Boston Red Rocks closed furiously in his last race
and looks in a good position to capitalize off a good trip
here.?

JAY WOLF (Little Brown Jug publicity)
Pace: ?Control The Moment. Brett Miller will stick to his
script and will send Racing Hill after the early lead. Tim
Tetrick will get Boston Red Rocks into the race early. Control
The Moment will be closer to the pace this week and will
use his fast closing speed to win by a length over Racing Hill
and JK Will Power.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. The post position God has been
good to Wiggle It Jiggleit and Team Teague the past few
starts. Even with the additional 1/8th of a mile, post 10 will
be hard to overcome. Always B Miki has the post advantage
and will use it to defeat Freaky Feet Pete in 1:47.4. Wiggle It
Jiggleit will overcome a rough trip for the show spot.?
IAN FLEMING (General Manager ? Clinton Raceway)
Pace: ?Control The Moment. He has a great late kick that is
a perfect fit for the Meadowlands.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. The best until proven
otherwise.?
KEN WEINGARTNER (Harness Racing Communications / USTA)
Pace: ?Racing Hill. Control The Moment was awesome in
the stretch in last week?s elimination, but Racing Hill has
done little wrong this season and should be fresh off his
bye.?
Haughton: ?Always B Miki. Hard to pick against the world
champion, who defeated WIJI and Pete in the Franklin from a
tough starting spot and gets the best of the draw here.?

Driver Scott Zeron believes the Canadian invader from the famed Wellwood
Stable is primed for a big night in his Stanley Dancer division.

There?s really no other way to put it. Scott Zeron is
optimistic when it comes to driving Marion Marauder.
he was as strong as he?s ever been going across the wire. I?m
excited, and he?s lightly raced so he?s fresh.?
The Canadian-based trotter drew post six in his $153,250
division of tonight?s (July 16) Stanley Dancer Memorial for
three-year-old male trotters at the Meadowlands Racetrack
and will not have to contend with Hambletonian favorite
Southwind Frank, who is in the opposite division. Marion
Marauder finished second to Southwind Frank four times last
season.
Marion Marauder has won three of four races this year,
including the Goodtimes Stakes at Mohawk Racetrack on
June 18. A week ago, he started from post nine in a
three-year-old open at the Meadowlands and stormed home
from last place in :26.3 to finish second-placed-first when
Jack Vernon made a break and was eventually placed ninth.
Marion Marauder is the 5-2 morning line favorite in his
Dancer division, with Jimmy Takter-trained Bar Hopping the
3-1 second choice from post nine in the 11-horse field that
will go 1-1/8 miles.
?I think the Stanley Dancer looks great,?Zeron said of the
prep race for the $1 million Hambletonian on Aug. 6 at the
Meadowlands. ?He couldn?t be coming into the race any
better. Last week when we were just in an overnight to make
sure he got prepped for the Dancer, he finished guns a

Owned by Marion Jean Wellwood, widow of the late U.S.
and Canadian Hall of Fame horseman Bill Wellwood, and
trained by their daughter, Paula Wellwood and her husband,
Mike Keeling, Marion Marauder is also owned by Paula and
Mike?s son Devin Keeling. The trotter has won four of 17
career races and earned $404,862. As a two-year-old, he won
once in 13 starts but finished second five times and third
three times.
?Last year he had a few quirks,?Zeron said. ?He didn?t like
going up to the gate. If he did, you had to follow another
horse and then slide him onto the gate at the last second. So
Harness Racing Update | 6 | July 16, 2016
Harness Raci ng Update
that was the main reason we never positioned him in a
winnable spot last year. He was always a little too far back.
We did what we had to do with the quirks we were working
with.?
Those issues have been resolved this year, not to mention
the fact that Marion Marauder has gotten substantially
bigger.
?I don?t usually see a big difference from (ages) two to
three,?Zeron said. ?Not a lot of them get a lot of size and
mass to them like I?ve seen him do this year. That?s going to
be a great thing, we?re going to need that for two heats in
the Hambo.?
Since the Stanley Dancer attracted 11 starters in each
division, it will be contested at 1-1/8 miles rather than the
traditional one-mile distance. That added distance is another
reason Zeron feels good about his horse.
?I think it helps me,?said Zeron, who leads all drivers at the
Meadowlands in wins with 70 this year. ?If he was a stone
cold frontrunner I think it?d be terrible. But the fact that my
horse likes coming off the pace, it?s good. The further he goes
in the mile, the better he picks up his speed. It?s better suited
to me.
divisions.
?Any time you can miss one of the favorites, it?s good for all
of us,?he said. ?To beat Southwind Frank, if we have to do it
on Hambo Day than that?s the time we?ll try to do it. But it?s
perfectly fine he?s in a separate division. By the same token,
my horse isn?t a frontrunner. I?m not saying he can?t do it, but
horses like Southwind Frank, when they?re in a race they
push it and that?s always a good thing.?
It seems everything about Marion Marauder is a good thing
where Zeron is concerned.
?He?s given me no inkling as to why he would be not
capable of winning (on Saturday) and I feel like he?s only
gotten that much better every start he?s raced this year,?he
said. ?The extra eighth should be suited for him. Everything
is prepping into solid form for the Hambo and I?m excited
about it.?
It?s not hard to tell.
?Obviously having trailers is never a good thing but I?m
perfectly fine with the extra eighth. I?m not worried about it
being harder for him to win. I feel like it?s a little easier for
him to win.?
Of course, it?s not like Zeron would complain if Marion
Marauder got out front.
?But so far I like him a little bit better following the
helmet,?he said. ?I almost feel like he slowly starts to build
up his speed the further in the mile he goes. His last quarter
is always going to be his best quarter.?
Zeron has driven Marion Marauder in eight of his career
starts, including second-place finishes to Southwind Frank in
last year?s William Wellwood Memorial and Breeders Crown.
?So far the trips have been working out,?Zeron said. ?We?re
being patient with him, trying to have him in the right
situation heading home, and he?ll always give you everything
he?s got. It?s always nice driving a trotter who?s good gaited,
well mannered and lets me do whatever I want with him.
He?s very easy for me to drive.?
As for not getting another shot at Southwind Frank in the
Stanley Dancer, Zeron is not complaining. He hopes it will
materialize a few weeks down the road. Southwind Frank,
trained by Ron Burke and driven by Yannick Gingras, is the
6-5 morning line favorite in the first of the two Dancer

Dri v er Trends Rev i si ted
Through July 6, which drivers are trending up, which are down and which are
consistent compared to the same time in 2015?
by Joe Fitzgerald
We took a look at some of the drivers that were trending
one way or the other several weeks ago, comparing their
stats in mid-May of this year with those of the same date in
2015. Time to revisit that topic and see how things have
changed since May and also how various drivers are doing
compared with last year through July 6. There?s no room to
mention everyone, so there will be drivers near the top of
the earnings list who aren?t included, in many cases because
they haven?t engaged in a dramatic performance shift.
Since mid-May, 34-year-old Tim Tetrick has moved up one
spot to the top of the
earnings list. A year ago,
he was at number three.
He was able to leave the
gate fast this year, which
hasn?t been the case in
the recent past when he
had to play catch up for
one reason or another. As
of July 6, he was 90 wins
and almost $389,000
ahead of the same date in
2015. His UDRS is 0.329;
a year ago it was 0.300.
Dave Briggs Tetrick is the leading

Philadelphia and number
two at The Meadowlands.
Rockeyed Optimist, Boston Red Rocks, Maestro Blue Chip and
Mach It So are a few of his money makers.
Yannick Gingras, who turns 37 in a few weeks, has clawed
his way from number seven in mid-May to number three
today. He?s actually two spots ahead of a year ago, with 15
fewer wins, but $24,000 more in earnings. Gingras is number
three at Harrah?s and number eight on the driver?s list at The
Meadowlands, winning at a 14 per cent rate. And he?s
number 11 at Pocono Downs. Southwind Frank, Hannelore
Hanover, Check Six, Rockin Ron, All The Time and JK Will
Power are a few of his big guns. Gingras moved to the top of
the list in mid-August of 2015. He?s got the prohibitive
Hambletonian favorite and a win in the classic would send
him right to the top of this year?s list. But overall, the Burke
Barn is softer than usual on the top aged tier, thanks in part
to Miki, Pete and Wiggle. All Bets Off and Rockin Ron have
been successful, but the Big Three are putting a damper on
their game of late. Hannelore Hanover doesn?t have that
problem. Burke had no starter in the Lynch and the
sophomore pacing colts aren?t as good as they seemed to be
a month ago. But he and Takter both have lots of promising
freshmen, so Yannick will be a tough out again this year.
The 2015 dash champ,
37-year-old Aaron
Merriman, is on top of that
list by a mile, but he?s
banking more dollars this
year. He?s fourth now, after
being 10th a year ago this
time. In May he was third.
His UDRS is up from last
year. He?s winning more
than a quarter of his
starts at Northfield and
he?s second to Dave
Palone at The Meadows,
with a very good UDRS of
.328 and more than $2
million in earnings at the
PA track.
USTA
A aron M erri man i s al so h av i ng a

Matt Kakaley, who was fourth on the money list in May, is
now fifth. He was in 12th place a year ago. The 28-year-old is
second to George Nap at Pocono and number eight at
Yonkers. He gets around. His UDRS has risen from 0.208 a
year ago to 0.252 today. I Said Diamonds and All Bets Off are
two of his better regular drives. Kakaley finished 2015 at
number 13. The fact that the Burke barn was off 108 wins
and $3.4 million from 2014 had a lot to do with that. He was
eighth the two previous years.
After a slow start Brett Miller, 42, has jumped from number
23 in May to number nine. He was 11th this time last year.
He?s fifth at Harrah?s, seventh at The Meadowlands and ninth
at Pocono Downs. Star pacers Pure Country and Racing Hill
are two of Miller?s best, in addition to a slew of good young
ones in the Takter Barn.

time. He?s risen from number 21 in May to number six. One
year ago, he was at number nine. His win total is down by 24
since then, but his earnings are up by $42,000. Taking a page
from the Jim Morrill, Jr. playbook hasn?t hurt him at all. And
his UDRS is up to 0.303 from 0.267 a year ago. Miller
occupies the four slot at Harrah?s and is number 10 at The
Meadowlands. He won the NA Cup with Betting Line and is
also driving Always B Miki, Darlinonthebeach, Katie?s Rocker
and Broadway Donna. He?s finished the year in the top five
on the money list the past four years.
Jordan Stratton, 29, the number five driver at Yonkers, has
gone from number 32 a year ago to number 13. He?s banked
$900,000 more at this point in 2016 than he had a year ago,
thanks in no small measure to his success with Bit Of A
Legend N, Texican N and others in the Levy series. He was at
number nine back in May when that money was fresh.
Chris Page, the number three driver at Scioto Downs, where
he drives for top trainers like Ron Burke and Brian Brown, has
gone from number 25 last July to number 16. He?s also been
driving for those trainers in the energized Ohio Sire Stakes
races at Northfield. The 32-year-old Buckeye has 56 more
wins and $443,000 more in earnings than he had one year
ago. His UDRS has risen from 0.232 to 0.267.
Jody Jamieson, 39, has moved up 11 spots from where he
was a year ago this time; he?s gone from 38 to 27. He has 38
more wins and his earnings are up by $270,000. And his
UDRS has increased from 0.244 to 0.284. His drive, win and
money totals have fallen the last four years as he slid from
number seven in 2012, to number 11, to number 16, to
number 31 last year.
Joe Bongiorno, who wasn?t on the top 50 earnings list a
year ago or at the close of 2015, is now number 12. As of July
6, he had 238 wins, earnings of $1.6 million and a UDRS of
0.292. Ron Burke has been keeping him busy. He?s number
three at The Meadowlands, number five at Northfield and
number 13 at Harrah?s.
Jason Bartlett, the top driver at Yonkers Raceway, was
number one a year ago this time, but is number two right
now. He doesn?t embrace a nomadic lifestyle like many of the
top drivers; 35-year-old Bartlett pretty much stays at Yonkers
where he wins more than 24 per cent of the time. The
overnight purses are so high at Yonkers that staying put
serves him well. His UDRS has risen from 0.348 a year ago to
a stellar 0.378.
Twenty-seven-year-old Scott Zeron has carved out a spot
on the top tier. He obviously made the right career move
when he relocated to the States in November, 2013. A
paragon of consistency, he was at number 13 one year ago
and is currently at number 12. He finished up 2015 number
12 and was 13 in May. His UDRS is up a bit from last year.
Scott is the leading driver at The Meadowlands and number
nine at Yonkers Raceway.
Like Scott Zeron, Mark MacDonald, 37, who moved South
four-and-a-half years ago, is reaping the rewards. He went
from number 22 a year ago to number 17, with 22 more wins
and $286,000 more in earnings. He?s number six at Yonkers
and is ahead of all the WEG based drivers on the money list.
Mac?s UDRS is up to 0.228 from 0.186 a year ago. He finished
up 2015 at number 24; That number is sure to rise in 2016
with the help of the lucrative NYSS program.
Presumptive Hall of Famer Brian Sears, 48, is at number
seven, down from fourth in May, when all that Yonkers money
still dominated the stats board. His UDRS is up but he?s short
$826,000 from a year ago this month. Bee A Magician being
on the shelf since the end of May has much to do with that.
Perhaps Control The Moment will fill that space for him.
Sears is another consistent performer: he finished up in sixth
last year, in fifth in 2014, and in third and sixth the two
previous years. He has three stakes drives at The
Meadowlands, five drives at Harrah?s and none at The
Meadows. Obviously Sears doesn?t get around the circuit as
much as he used to.
It?s been a tough slog for the ubiquitous Corey Callahan,
who got a late start. Last July, he was number two on the
money list, and he was number eight in May. He?s currently at
number 10, 134 wins and $1.3 million short of his totals one
year ago. He has 249 fewer starts than he did at this point in
July, 2015. Corey, who is number four at The Meadowlands,
winning at a 12 per cent clip, has seen his UDRS drop from
0.333 to 0.272. Still, he is behind a select group of nine
drivers and ahead of a zillion others. It?s telling that his
fastest drive Mel Mara would be a star most years, but he has
to battle ABM, Wiggle and Pete in 2016. He?s number four at
The Meadowlands. Corey finished at number five last year
and was sixth the two previous years. Chances are he?ll be
right there by December.

apron shot me odd looks and stepped back a few feet as I
tore up vouchers while doubled over on the racetrack apron,
giggling like a lunatic. If three or four other of my loopy
friends had witnessed this debacle it would have morphed
from funny to hilarious, perhaps legendary. It would have
been a tale passed down to future generations of
handicappers.
Or this? A dreary November, home alone, log onto my
computer to do some harness handicapping, hit my first and
only ever Pick 4. When they posted the payoff of $681.20, I
sat up in my chair like it had just been plugged into a wall
socket and whooped, ?I feel good.?Since the computer was
right there, I quickly YouTubed, ?James Brown and his
Fabulous Flames ? ?I Feel Good? and cranked that tune up to
warp three.
Dancing alone
by Trey Nosrac
You had to be there.
I wish you had been.
I once had a system for betting on harness races that was
brilliant. It was not complex. I would wager on a heavy
favorite to show. The horse had to be a mortal lock. I would
then parlay the virtually automatic winning ticket on the
next race with another chalk to show. I would repeat this
four times and then unload the whole profit on a win ticket
in the fifth race.
To me, this plan seemed totally cool, basically foolproof,
and much better than my previous 107 gambling systems. At
least my money would last a little longer. I actually whistled
and skipped on my way to the ATM at the racetrack.
My first bet was, as planned, the favorite, coming out of the
rail in a six-horse field. I plopped down $20 to show and
watched the pacer stagger to a fourth-place finish.
Things happen. You can?t bet scared money. I just needed
another trip to the ATM for funds to give my new system a
restart. Dutifully, I slapped down another $20 to show on a
pacing filly in race #2. This horse was a 2-1 shot that could
not lose. She did not win, but, phew, she did get her head
across the wire in second place, until the inquiry sign blinked
on and she was placed fourth for, ?Racing inside the pylons.?
When I returned from the ATM for race three, I went with
an even-money trotter, a gelding picked by everyone on
planet earth, by far the best in a seven-horse field. He would
have won by open lengths - had he made the gate. I actually
collapsed in laughter when the trotter (that never trotted a
single step in this particular contest) galloped past the finish
line.
This may have been the best 60 bucks I ever spent. I still
can?t believe it happened. I submit to you that it may well
very have been easier to cash an exotic pick five than to not
cash a single show ticket in one of those three races.
The next two minutes James and I did a duet that included
maniacal dancing, leaping off furniture, dropping to my
knees and an ill-advised attempt at doing ?the splits?as a
finale (which later required ice packs and medical attention).
Somewhere, ?The Godfather of Soul?was smiling. Alas, as I
lay panting, I realized that nobody witnessed our
performance.
And that?s the theme of this report ? gambling alone. It?s
not as much fun playing the ponies in a vacuum. And it?s just
not easy to round up a posse these days, but I don?t do
whining. This is about doing, consider it a little tip.
When possible, try to make your horse handicapping social;
make it into a contest, or a joint effort. It does not matter if
you are attending the track in person, or gambling on the
internet ? it?s just difficult to have much of a party alone.
Hey? I have more wagering systems and my groin has
healed.
Now you know something has to be funny to make you
laugh out loud when you are alone. Yeah, some folks on the

Every Way Out, A riana G
dominant in NJSS at Big M
On a program that saw four $100,000 New Jersey Sire
Stakes (NJSS) Finals for 2-year-olds, Every Way Out and
Ariana G stood out Friday (July 15) as the dominant winners
at the Meadowlands.
Every Way Out won the colt and gelding pace by
four-and-three-quarter lengths over Deo Galileo. Firefox
Hanover was third.
The son of If I Can Dream? Every Play led at every call,
cutting out fractions of :28, :56.3 and 1:24.4, before sprinting
home in :27.4 to record an easy 1:52.3 score for driver Tim
Tetrick, trainer Dylan Davis and owners Taylor, Basen, Gold
and Lazzaro.
As the 1-9 public choice, Every Way Out returned $2.10 to
win and stayed perfect in three starts.
?He's got a pretty big motor,?said Tetrick. ?Every time I asked
him, there was plenty left.?
There was plenty left in Ariana G?s tank as well, as the
daughter of Muscle Hill? Cantab It All rolled by seven
lengths over Evelyn in 1:53.4 for her second win in as many
starts in the filly trot. Feed Your Head was third.
Ariana G, driven by Yannick Gingras and trained by Jimmy
Takter, came uncovered around the far turn and blew her foes
away as the 3-2 second choice, returning $5.00 to win for
owners Marvin Katz and Al Libfeld.
Checkmate Time, the 6-5 favorite, got jammed up at the
three-eighths and went off stride, finishing far back.
In the colt and gelding trot, What The Hill (Muscle Hill? K
T Cha Cha, $17.80) emerged victorious along the rail in deep
stretch for driver Andrew McCarthy and trainer Ron Burke,
scoring by a head over King On The Hill in 1:55.2. Fly On was
third.
Designated Drinker (If I Can Dream? Dreamsicle) blew up
the tote board in the filly pace, gunning down 1-5 favorite
Livinginthedream in 1:55.2 to record a neck win for
owner/trainer/driver Chris Lems at odds of 40-1, paying
$82.40 to win. Wonderful World was third.
Lems picked a great time to record his first career driving
win at the Big M.
?It could not have come at a better time,?he said.
LITTLE EXTRAS: Jeff Gural?s Little E LLC owned a half-dozen
of the trotters in the NJSS finals. ? The fifth race 20 cent
Jackpot Super High Five did not have a single-ticket winner,
upping the carryover for the next program to $35,773.41. ?
All-source wagering on the 14-race program totaled
$2,590,736, which represents an increase of $193,482 over
the corresponding card from last year, which had 13 races. ?
Tonight?s huge Crawford Farms Meadowlands Pace Night
program has an early post time of 6:30 p.m. In addition to a
star-studded stakes slate, the card also features a mandatory
payout of the late Jackpot Super High Five (race 12), which
has a carryover of $267,769.

Snowstorm Hanover equals
PA SS stakes record
Snowstorm Hanover matched the stakes record when he
stormed through the slop and scored in 1:56 in Friday?s (July
15) Pennsylvania Sires Stakes action at The Meadows.
The $192,004 event for two-year-old colt and gelding
trotters, known as the Hickory Pride, was contested over six
divisions, with Affair Of Honor, Dover Dan, Don Dream, Lucky
Matter and Moonshiner Hanover also taking splits. Trainer
Chris Beaver (Lucky Matter, Moonshiner Hanover) enjoyed a
stakes double while Corey Callahan, trainer John
Butenschoen and owners William Wiswell, Jean Goehlen and
Eugene Schick (Affair Of Honor, Dover Dan) teamed for a pair
of Hickory Pride victories.
Snowstorm Hanover had little trouble with the off going,
zipping to the front for Dave Palone and defeating Stealth
Hanover by three-and-a-half lengths, with Andy M third. The
time equaled Stormin Normand?s Hickory Pride record
established in 2011.
Palone, who previously piloted the son of Muscle
Massive? Snow Angel Hanover in two qualifying wins, said
the big performance was no surprise to him.
?He?s acted like a really good colt all along,?Palone said.
?There?s no bottom to him. Today over that racetrack, that?s
an incredible mile.?
Ron Burke trains Snowstorm Hanover for Burke Racing
Stable, Frank Baldachino, Phillip Collura and Weaver
Bruscemi LLC.
A full-brother to millionaire and top stallion Explosive
Matter, Affair Of Honor raced greenly through the stretch, but
still held off Box Of Luck by a head in 1:58. Muscle Ville
earned show.
?He kind of ran out a little bit, looked a little bit lost, but
he?s starting to figure it out,?said assistant trainer Tyler
Butenschoen of the son of Cantab Hall? Fireworks Hanover, a

$90,000 yearling acquisition. ?He has a bunch of ability and
speed, but he might be one who takes a little longer to put
everything together.?
?First-time Lasix and racing her off the helmet made the
difference,?Bartlett said. ?We?re trying to get her back to the
way she was last season. This was the first step.?
Dover Dan saved ground for most of the mile, then
exploded out of the final turn and downed You Cant Habit by
half a length in 1:58.3. Muay Hanover completed the ticket.
As for odds-on Time On My Hands ($3.50), she took it the
distance (:28.1, :57.3, 1:26, 1:54.3) from post four in the
second division.
?I had to just get him through the turn at the half,?Callahan
said. ?If I could have been first up, I think he?d have won a lot
easier. But I didn?t want to move with him in either turn. He?s
still trying to find his gait.?
Opening to three-and-a-half lengths in and out of the final
turn, she whipped a closing No Clouds Bluechip (Brian Sears)
by three-quarters of a length. American Ivy (Andy Miller)
couldn?t sustain her second move and faded to third.
In the $20,000 winners over $10,000 life/preferred
handicap pace, Foiled Again, the richest horse in harness
racing history, showed he still has plenty of pop at age 12
when he cruised to a front-end victory in 1:51.4, two and
three-quarter lengths better than the pocket-sitting Techtor
Hanover. Aimo Hanover earned show.
Time On My Hands, an American Ideal? Bewitching Jewell
miss trained by Chris Ryder for co-owners Robert Mondillo,
Michael Robinson, Steve Cheatham and BFJStable, is now
four-for-seven this season. The exacta paid $74, with the
triple returning $206.50.
The Dragon Again? In A Safe Place gelding soared over
$7.4 million (U.S.) in career earnings for trainer Burke and
owners Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and JJK
Stables.

Bartlett sweeps NYSS events
Jason Bartlett won five races Friday night (July 15) at
Yonkers, included both halves of the equally-divided
$167,874 New York Sire Strakes events for sophomore pacing
fillies.
Soft Idea ($24.40) held sway in the opening $83,937
division. Grabbing the three-hole from post position five, she
watched 31-1 proposition Angels Rockn Pink (Mark
MacDonald) throw down early intervals of :28.2 and :57.
Mother Of Art (Joe Bongiorno), part of a three-headed, 1-20,
Ron Burke-trained entry, was away second but decided not to
take over from the longshot. That left Soft Idea a clear path
to try it, which she did in and out of a 1:25.3 three-quarters.
Soft Idea opened two-and-a-half lengths entering the lane
and looked to coast.

However, a resurgent ?Pink?made up a ton ground late, to
only miss by a neck in 1:54.3. Dime a Dance (Matt Kakaley),
trying to salvage some semblance of dignity for the failed
entry, was third.
For third choice Soft Idea, an American Ideal filly out of
Walk Softly trained by Linda Toscano for South Mountain
Stable, Bay?s Stable LLC, Radio Racing and Little E, it was her
second win in six seasonal starts. The exacta paid $301.50,
with the triple returning $573.
