We have started a wonderful Israeli Dancing group for
Kindergarten and Grade 1 that will be performing at the JCC's
Annual Festival Ha’Rikud in May. We have hosted a Shabbat
Dinner, with great attendance, every single month, and run a
number of programs and activities for school aged children,
youth (USY & Kadima), as well as families.
As we gear up for Winter, stay tuned for our USY & Kadima
programs, adult speaker series, more Shabbat dinners, and
fun Tu B’Shvat and Purim activities!
For adults, our Social Committee organized a delicious Israeli
cooking class where my mom - yes, my Ima - taught a secret
Falafel recipe she learned from a famous restaurant in Israel.
To complete the meal, she also showed the class how to make

he weather outside is dreary, cold and wet. So what do I
do? I keep the blinds in my office closed, open the door to
the daycare and listen to the kids singing songs about
Chanukah! I go visit the 3 to 5 year old program and watch the
kids celebrate Shabbat. So, who cares if its miserable outside.
Beth Tikvah is the best! Its indoor warmth and sunshine! That’s
what is so great about Beth Tikvah. I know I always talk about
“family” at Beth Tikvah. But, its true. It’s like a home away
from home. You can come here to pray, to get advice from the
Rabbi, to learn, to have coffee and a cookie, to volunteer, to
shop, to enjoy programs and so much more. Beth Tikvah is the
place to be!!!

days. And from that time to this we celebrate this festival, and
call it Lights. If the Maccabees had not won their fight for

everybody else and stop being different, the Jews would all
have disappeared.
And so, we also celebrate as we observe this Festival of Lights
– Chanukah. We light our candles, play the dreidle game and
eat latkes. We enjoy “family” time. Come to Beth Tikvah – to

has already made a commitment in B.C. and who has not, the

not? And now sadly the events in France.

through both a secular and Jewish lens. Do you have views on

Preschool I follow those guidelines, creating an environment that
will promote children’s development. Offering them cognitive,
physical and emotional experiences, that will help them in
becoming critical thinkers. Human beings who will have the
clarity of vision to direct and shape the future of our society.
I would like to use this opportunity to thank the Beth Tikvah
Board of Directors and Naomi Hazon for their efforts to make
Maria Montessori who was an Italian physician, educator, and sure that Beth Tikvah Congregation will continue to offer
innovator, acclaimed for her educational method that builds quality early childhood education to the community.

DIRTY APRON KIDS PROGRAM
Challah Baking

an you imagine anything sweeter than the smell of fresh baked challah
that you created with your children? On Sunday, November 1st, the social
hall was a bustle of activity as children and their parents and grandparents
came together to learn the finer points of how to braid and bake a challah.
Over 30 children and their parents and grandparents rolled up their sleeves
and rolled out strands of dough. With focus and determination (and a bit of
flour to prevent sticking), they tried out several different braiding patterns.

While their creations
baked in the oven, the
children designed and
crafted their very own challah covers. Once the challah was out of the oven,
our bakers confirmed that the challah tasted as good as it smelled. The leftover dough was braided and baked and then donated to the Jewish Food
Bank. The only question remaining at the end of the program was: What will
our young bakers and
chefs cook at the next
program?

Isha l’Isha also sponsored an earlier session of candle making in the afternoon for the Hebrew school youth. This event
was a favourite a few years ago and was brought back by
popular demand. It was well worth it!
DRESS FOR SUCCESS

our annual Suit Drive for the Dress for Success organization
which provides interview appropriate clothing for low income
women who are trying to enter the work force. We were able
to donate beautiful suits, coats, blouses, and accessories that
will outfit many women. Your gifts will help women in fulfilling

along with the group “feed the hungry”. One of the
participants, Sam Schon, participated as part of his
Mitzvah Project for his Bar Mitzvah taking place in
Toronto this December.

trengthening connections between Jewish teens is more
important now than ever before, and this is exactly what
Richmond USY is all about. We give teenagers an opportunity
to build lasting friendships with old friends, all while making
new friends and attending fun activities and vents. S
teens jumped around the 80-trampoline room, into foam pits,
and even organized a game of 3D dodgeball! Most recently,
Richmond USY went to the movies to watch the new James
Bond movie Spectre 007. Our next event, USY Skate, will be on
Sunday, December 6th from 12-4pm at Minoru Arena.
We started off the year with a Kick-Off BBQ where we collaborated with Vancouver USY to gather USYers from all around
Greater Vancouver. The teens enjoyed an evening full of food,
fun ice breakers, and games such as GaGa and Ride the Bus.

Chanukah 2015 begins at sunset on Sunday, December 6, and ends on Monday, December 14
What is Hanukkah?
Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights. In Hebrew, the word
“hanukkah” means “dedication.” The name reminds us that
this holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the holy
Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the
Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E.
How are the candles lit?
The first night, the first candle is lit. It is the candle on the
extreme right of the menorah. On the second night, the second candle (the new one) is lit first and then the one which

u B’Shevat, the 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar –
celebrated this year on Monday, January 25, 2016 – is
the day that marks the beginning of a “New Year for Trees.”
This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in
the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin
a new fruit-bearing cycle.

BRIDGE NIGHT AT BETH TIKVAH

Monday night is when Beth Tikvah runs its premier bridge
game. This is an ACBL sanctioned duplicate bridge game,

Maksymetz, who has helped represent Canada in international
tournaments, and is currently coach of Canada’s Junior Bridge
Team. If you want to brush up on your bridge skills before playing in this game, please contact Larry Meyer at 604- 271-8692.
If enough people are interested, Bryan will be happy to offer
bridge lessons.
THURSDAY NIGHTS
Thursday night is when Beth Tikvah runs its casual duplicate
bridge game. This is not a sanctioned bridge game, there is no
official director, no masterpoints are awarded, entry fee $2.

We would like to remind our members and guests
to be mindful during our Shabbat Services of:
• fragrances (many people are allergic to them)
• turning off ALL cell phones, pagers, and any other
electrical devices
• as we would like to celebrate Shabbat as a community
we ask that you wait to have the Kiddush and
Hamotze recited before partaking of the Kiddush
luncheon
• always wearing a kippah and tallit when participating
in our Shabbat service
• no applauding during Shabbat services
This helps us in our aim to make Shabbat a
pleasant and memorable experience for all.
DRIVERS WANTED
Do you want to do a mitzvah…We have some elderly congregants who would love to come to services but can no longer drive.
