SUNDAY READINGS
First Reading: Acts 6: 1 – 7
During the early growth of the Church, the apostles realized
that they needed more disciples in order to carry out effectively
the ministry of the Church. The community selected seven
men, one of whom was Stephen.
Second Reading: 1 Peter 2: 4 – 9
Citing many uses of the word “stone” in the sayings of Jesus
and in the Old Testament, Peter urges the Christians to be
“living stones...an edifice of spirit.”
Gospel: John 14: 1 – 12
In this beautiful passage from the words of Jesus at the Last
Supper, Jesus promises that he is preparing a place for the
apostles. He tells them, “I am the way, and the truth, and the
life; no one comes to the Father but through me.”
When Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus
answers, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”

THE EUCHARISTIC PRECEPT + EASTER DUTY
All Catholics are to receive Holy Communion during the Easter
Season. Church Law states in Canon 920:
1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most
Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving
Communion at least once a year.
2. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season
unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time
during the year.
The dioceses of the United States have an indult that allows
the Easter Duty to be satisfied from the First Sunday of Lent to
Trinity Sunday.

BRING SOME FOOD WITH YOU TO CHURCH
NEXT WEEK AND HELP FEED THE HUNGRY!
The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal at Our Lady of
Guadalupe Convent (in St. Ann’s Parish on Bainbridge
Avenue) collect food for the poor which they distribute weekly
to the needy in their Bainbridge neighborhood. Holy Rosary
th
collects food for them on the 4 weekend of every month. So
please bring in one of the following items and leave them in
the Church vestibules.
+ Canned vegetables, beans, soups and fruits
+ Bags of dry rice and beans
+ Bags or boxes of dried pasta
+ Containers of oatmeal, cornmeal and grits
+ Boxes of cereal
The sisters distribute food every Thursday morning to about
100 families who come to the convent door. Since most of the
families have children, the sisters also request juice boxes and
some treats like cookies, candies, chips, pretzels and the like.

10 TIPS FOR PRAYING THE FAMILY ROSARY MORE
DEVOUTLY, ESPECIALLY WITH CHILDREN
1. Avoid forcing or punishing anyone to pray the rosary
– let it be a privilege and pleasure.
2. When someone has to be absent for the rosary, let
them know they will be missed.
3. Younger children may not be able to participate in the
entire rosary because it is too long.
4. Choose a time that is convenient for most in the
group, let it be known as “Rosary Time”. It does not
have to be the same everyday.
5. Choose a special place that appeals to as many as
possible – before a picture or statue, at an outdoor
shrine, or even a bedside.
6. Vary the posture – kneeling, sitting, standing.
7. Let everyone be involved according to age and ability,
from quiet attending to leadership.
8. The family rosary should reflect the loving relationship
within the family – for example, a hug of peace could
conclude it.
9. Make the rosary inclusive. If there are guests, invite
them to share in it.
10. The rosary is a bouquet, a gift of love from your family
to Jesus and Mary.

A NOTE TO OUR NON-CATHOLIC FRIENDS
Although we warmly welcome you to our parish Liturgies, we
cannot extend to you an invitation to receive Holy
Communion. The reception of Holy Communion is a sign of
Unity in Faith, and such unity does not exist between
Catholics and those who belong to other Christian groups.
That unity is something for which we are to pray. If you
would like to explore becoming a Catholic, please speak to
one of the Priests. You may find the U.S. Catholic Bishops’
GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF COMMUNION
helpful. This document is found printed on the inside cover
of Today’s Missal in the pews.

A NOTE ABOUT BECOMING SPONSORS
FOR BAPTISM AND CONFIRMATION
It is a great honor to be asked to be a sponsor for Baptism or
Confirmation. The role of a “godparent” is to be an “other
parent” in matters of our holy Faith. That is why sponsors
must be practicing Catholics, 16 yrs of age or older,
having received Confirmation and currently living a good
Christian moral life. If the sponsor is married, that person
must be in a valid Church marriage. One sponsor is
required for Confirmation. It is customary to have two for
Baptism, in which case one must be male and the other
female.
A nominated sponsor is asked to get certification from his/her
current parish. This is a declaration by a priest/deacon that the
individual is qualified to be a sponsor according to Church Law.
To be so certified, the individual must be a current parishioner
of the particular parish where the certification is being sought,
and be known to the priest/deacon as being a faithful practicing
Catholic, attending Mass there regularly.
Unfortunately, at times, family members or friends are chosen
to be sponsors with good intentions, but are found to be
ineligible according to Church Law. Also, more and more,
people seem to think that they are still “parishioners” of their
childhood parish, where they attended school or received
sacraments years ago, while no longer living in the area or
attending Mass there regularly. It is important for all
individuals to be active members of their local Catholic
faith communities. The unfortunate fact is that some are
neither practicing Catholics nor faithful members of a parish
family and are thereby ineligible to become sponsors. Like all
other things in life, individual choices bring consequences.
Here, at Holy Rosary, Certificates of Sponsorship are
given by the pastor to registered members of the parish
who are practicing Catholics and who meet the above
mentioned criteria. Please see the pastor after Mass on
Saturday evening or Sunday to inquire about getting a
certificate.
