THE LEGION OF HONOR OF WORK BY
ANNIE LEIBOVITZ, YOU KNOW THAT
PORTRAITURE
IN
PHOTOGRAPHY
IS HOT.
The fine art of capturing the essence,
the inner life, of a subject is a tall order for
any photographer — even masters such as
Ms. Leibovitz don’t always succeed.
Sacred Heart Prep senior Shannon
Hamilton of Menlo Park decided to
tackle the challenge in a series of photographs she calls “The Passion Portraits,”
now on view in the Sigall Building at the
school’s Atherton campus.
The resulting portraits are whimsical,
funny, touching and revealing; clearly,
this young artist has a gift for achieving
a rapport with her subjects as they open
themselves to the camera’s lens.
The project began when Shannon was
asked to take portraits of women students for the school’s annual Women’s
Talent Show, held in March.
Rather than limit the portraits to
women, Shannon opened it up to all
students and staff, and came up with
the idea of asking each person to pose
with an object that represents her or
his passion in life. She set a schedule
of four days, during which she would
photograph the people outside the
administration building, using a digital
camera and just a sheet of white paper
as a backdrop.
The first day only four friends showed
up, but Shannon was undeterred. She
photographed the small group and then
posted the pictures on Facebook, the
popular social Web site. The next day,
students and faculty lined up to have
their photograph taken.
In all, she shot a total of 60 people, often
taking as many as 20 photos of a person.
And what did her subjects choose as their
“objects of passion”? Predictably, there
were examples of athletic gear — basketballs, footballs and a tennis racket. But
there were also the unexpected.
One student brought a photograph

of her late mother. Another showed
up with ballet shoes on and posed en
pointe. Biology teacher Deenie Clinton
arrived with five rats from her lab.
English teacher Connie Solari proudly
displayed an action figure of her beloved
Dante, while student Maggie Brezinski
wears a chef’s hat and holds tools of the
culinary trade.
Shannon was able to allow her subjects to reveal themselves, without any
self-consciousness or hesitancy. “Photography is a shared moment” and a
way to “distill reality,” she says.
She took on the Passion Portraits
because it was a “cathartic release” and
a way to distract her thoughts from concerns about grades and college applications, she says.
She had no way of knowing that
the project would become so large, or
so time-consuming. After taking the
portraits, she and her brother, Sean,
spent hours teaching themselves editing
techniques using Photoshop software.
Shannon used color to highlight the
objects held by each person. The rest of
the portraits are in black and white.
Influenced by the large-scale, blackand-white photographs of Richard Avedon, Shannon arrived at a double-layered
editing technique that required using two
prints. The portraits were taken using a
color digital camera; the color was then
removed, yielding a black-and-white
print. That print was placed over the
color print and the area surrounding the
object was carefully removed, revealing
the object below in color.
In this photographic portrait by Shannon Hamilton, student Maggie Brezinksi
shows her passion for cooking by wearing a chef’s hat and holding the tools of
the culinary trade.

The Passion Portraits
Continued from page 33
The result is a striking balance of color, which
emphasizes and enhances the object, and the cool
contrast of the black-and-white portrait. The photos
were printed on glossy photo paper (actual printing
done by Costco.com) in a 20-by-30-inch format.
She chose to have the printing process done commercially because of the desired size of the finished
prints and also due to the time it would have taken
to print in the school’s darkroom. In this case, the
editing process (done on Photoshop) was more
important, aesthetically, than the printing process.
Shannon Hamilton has studied photography
since her sophomore year; she says, in fact, that
she looked for a high school that had a darkroom
and a photography curriculum.
She explains that learning how to take a photograph and then actually printing it in a darkroom
is a good basis for any photography student, since
printing attunes the eye to the myriad uses of light.
Last year, she won first place in the youth category of the Palo Alto Weekly’s annual photography contest with a photo of a small child jumping
in a puddle of water. She has been offered admission by a long list of colleges, including Duke and
Georgetown University, and plans to pursue her
love of photography wherever she goes.
The Passion Portraits are on display in the Sigall
Building on campus through June 5. The prints
are for sale, with proceeds going toward a project called Epoche, which brings students in the
seventh and eighth grades at St. Elizabeth Seton
School in Palo Alto to Sacred Heart to learn photography and darkroom techniques from Sacred
Heart student volunteers.
The program was started by Shannon and fellow
student Pallavi Menon. Although they will be
graduating in June, other SHP students have
stepped forward to continue the program.

Kepler’s bookstore wins children’s bookseller award
“Kepler’s has won the equivalent of the Oscar
for children’s booksellers,” says Vivian Leal,
Kepler’s youth and family programs director.
The Menlo Park bookstore has been selected
as the winner of the 2008 Lucile Micheels Pannell Award, which recognizes retail bookstores
that excel in inspiring young people’s interest in
books and reading.
The Women’s National Book Association will
present the award at BookExpo America 2008
in Los Angeles on May 29. The award includes a
check for $1,000 and a framed piece of original
art by a children’s book illustrator.
“This recognition from WNBA is a huge honor

Author and actor Henry Winkler and co-author Lin Oliver will
visit the Menlo Park Library at 7

their latest book, “The Life of Me:
(Enter at Your Own Risk),” part of
their Hank Zipzer series.
The free program is co-sponsored by the Menlo Park Library
and Kepler’s bookstore in Menlo
Park.
Many remember Mr. Winkler
as “The Fonz” on the television
program, “Happy Days.” His
book, he says, is based on his true
life experiences as “the world’s
greatest underachiever.”
Growing up in New York City,
no one knew what dyslexia was,
he says. “I was called stupid, lazy
and I was told that I was not living
up to my potential,” says Mr. Winkler. The book deals with learning
differences in an empathetic way.
Mr. Winkler and Ms. Lin have
written 14 books about Hank

Step across the sun-dappled entry deck into the bright foyer
of this lovely, artful home. The spacious living room glows
with the warmth of the woodburning fireplace and the redwood paneling on the vaulted ceiling. The hardwood floors
throughout most of the house offer a perfect palette for
Oriental carpets. This three-bedroom home also has an
office/den and an eat-in kitchen that opens to the dining
room. Outside, the home is sheltered by towering oaks that
add to the privacy and tranquility. Yet there is plenty of sun
for the rose garden. There are private decks off the master
bedroom and the office, and additional large decks in front
and back for complete enjoyment of the California lifestyle.

Dear Readers,
Priced low, Sold high...
Rumors of the demise of the local
real estate market have been greatly
exaggerated. Since the beginning of the
year, low inventory and high buyer demand has resulted
in brisk sales in Palo Alto & Menlo Park. The majority
of homes listed for $1.5 million have sold for over the
list price. Two keys for successfully selling your home:
1) Properly prepare your home 2) Price your home
correctly. If you are considering selling your home,
now is the perfect time. My professional staff is ready
to assist you in preparing and selling your home. I look
forward to adding your name to my list of very satisfied
clients.
All the best,
Ann Griffiths

Notification of Cost of Capital (COC)
Filing by California Water Service
Company - Bear Gulch Service Area
On May 1, 2008, the California Water
Service Company (Cal Water) filed
Application A.08-05-002 with the
California Public Utilities Commission
(CPUC) asking for authority to increase
its authorized COC for the period from
January 1, 2009 through December
31, 2011. If approved by the CPUC,
Cal Water's revenues would increase by
$1,041,428 or 4.89%.
Cost of Capital is a financial term defining how much a corporation is allowed
in rates as a return on its invested
capital. In this proceeding the CPUC will
determine Cal Water's reasonable costs
of long-term debt, preferred stock and
common stock that are part of the
authorized cost of Capital. The authorized COC will be applied to the capital
investment authorized for Cal Water.
The purpose of this notice is to
inform customers of the filing of the
Application and to provide instructions
on how to provide input in the process.
Summary of Key Reasons for Cal
Water's COC Request
• Cal Water believes approval of this
request is necessary for it to attract
capital to meet its obligations to serve
its customers safely and efficiently.
• Cal Water's COC proposal will assist
it in maintaining an investment-grade
rating, thereby reducing the overall
financing costs and contribute to Cal
Water's ability to provide high quality,
reliable water service.
• Cal Water's authorized COC determines the compensation for those who
invest in Cal Water.
Cal Water's Request
For Cal Water's metered customers
Cal Water is requesting an increase of
$0.17 per CCF of water per month.
If Cal Water's proposal is adopted, a
typical metered customer with a 5/8” x
3/4” meter using 28 CCF of water per
month would see a monthly water bill
increase of $4.70 or 5.28% from $
89.01 at present rates to $93.71 in
mid-2009.
The rates shown on your monthly water
bill may vary from the existing rates
shown above due to surcredits or surcharges currently in effect in your area.
The CPUC's Process
The CPUC's Division of Ratepayer
Advocates (DRA) will review the
Application and submit its independent analysis and recommendations
in written reports for the CPUC’s
consideration. Other parties may also
participate.
Evidentiary hearings may be held whereby parties of record will present their
testimony and are subject to crossexamination before an Administrative
Law Judge (ALJ). These evidentiary
hearings are open to the public, but
only those who are parties of record
can present evidence or cross-examine
witnesses during evidentiary hearings.
After considering all proposals and
evidence presented during the formal
hearing process, the assigned ALJ will
issue a proposed decision. When the
CPUC issues a final decision on this
application it may adopt all or part of
the ALJ's proposed decision as written, amend or modify it, or deny the
Application. The CPUC's final decision
may be different from Cal Water's
proposal.
