Shepherd`s Voice - Shepherd of the Hills
The
Shepherd’s Voice
Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Summer Edition 2015
Fair are the meadows,
fairer still the woodlands,
Robed in the blooming garb of spring;
Jesus is fairer,
Jesus is purer,
Who makes the woeful heart to sing.
Starting Memorial weekend,
May 24 through Labor Day
weekend, September 6 we will
have one service at 9:30 AM.
The annual outdoor service,
congregation picnic and
water games will be Sunday,
August 23. Mark your
calendars, and join us!
Over the Handlebars...
With Pastor Dana
What do you hope happens for you
while you're away? What will the
summer be like with you on sabbatical?
What do you hope will happen for us?
Where will you go? When do you leave?
Who will look after us? When will you
be back?
I've heard quite a few of these questions
in the last few weeks, and I will try to answer them as best I
can. Here are a couple of easy ones: My sabbatical begins on
May 15 and ends on August 15.
I hope that being on sabbatical can be a time of rest, study,
and re-energizing for me, so that I can return to Shepherd of
the Hills ready to step into a renewed, vibrant ministry.
Ministry is a wonderful career; I am fortunate to share with
you the joys and the sorrows of our community of faith. I am
grateful for the opportunity to share God's word with you
each Sunday, and I enjoy the challenge of creating a sermon
each week that helps you to reflect on and grow in your faith
life. I hope that sabbatical will "refill the tank" a bit, to be

able to work with new energy and
creativity.
As we have been mentioning, Pastor
Chad Adamik will be the "fill-in" Pastor
for me while I'm gone. He will have
office hours on Mondays and will be
available through the office or by phone
at other times.
Pastor Bruce will
continue to provide regular visitation to
those who are unable to come to church.
We look forward to our second annual
"RE:Spond" multi-generational summer
study and service opportunity, July 2428. Like VBS and a mission trip swirled
into one, RE:Spond will have something
to offer for people of all ages. Pastor
Chad and Diane Patterson will provide
the leadership.
The highlights of the sabbatical are two
motorcycle trips, one along the west
coast from the San Juans to San
Francisco, and the other through the
Alps in Germany, Switzerland, France,
Italy and Austria. I will be blogging
throughout
the
sabbatical
at
ontherideofmylife.blogspot.com, and I
hope you'll read it and stay connected
with me.
I'll be reading and studying as well,
asking questions about the best practices
for reaching post-modern, non-churched
folks with the gospel. I will meet with
two well-known practitioners, Dr. Len
Sweet and Deaconess Sara Miles, to
experience their particular ministries. I
will also have time for prayer and
reflection.
My hope for SOTH is that we can
continue to enrich our ministry together-to experience the love of God in Christ,
to participate in a grace-filled community
together, and to learn to speak the
language of love and grace to people
who have yet to hear the message of
Abundant and Eternal Life.
Remodeling on a Strong Foundation
As you have probably heard, the council is
talking about some remodeling in our
narthex area, to provide added warmth
and comfort for all who enter our doors.
You've heard Lloyd Wilson's "Outreach
Minutes," which will continue as we
strengthen our ability to invite those in
our "sphere of influence" to Come and See
who we are as God's people at SOTH. We
are working on a new logo and new
communication strategies, and we'll
launch a new website very soon! In
addition, we are considering the best ways
to move forward with filling the vacancies
created by Kari and Chris's departure for
New Zealand. The council has also begun
work on the creation of a new three-year
plan, which has become even more
important in light of our staffing situation.
In conversation with one of our leaders, I
heard a great phrase, that describes
everything we're trying to accomplish.
She said to me, "We have a strong
foundation, and we are remodeling from
that strong foundation."
Remodeling
from a Strong Foundation. It's a brilliant
way to say it! We are remodeling our
"home," not just with some physical
changes, but with new ways of being
Church better together.
One final hope I have is that through this
summer we can be united in prayer and
reflection, opening our hearts and minds
to the direction God has in store for us, in
order that together we may continue
moving into God's future for Shepherd of
the Hills.
May God continue to bless the ministry of
Shepherd of the Hills!
PD
Welcome Pastor Chad!
Pastor Chad Adamik was called by the Rocky Mountain Synod Council to serve the synod as an
‘Intentional Interim Pastor’, a specialized ministry in the ELCA which focuses on leading a congregation or ministry through a pastoral transition. Bishop Jim Gonia appointed Pastor Chad to serve as
Interim Pastor of Lutheran Campus Ministry at CSU in February, 2014. A graduate of Capital University and Trinity Lutheran Seminary, this Buckeye (“Ohioan”), comes to LCM/CSU from the IndianaKentucky Synod of the ELCA where he has served as pastor/redeveloper of two congregations in
Kentucky. He has also served on several synodical committees and boards and most recently as the
Interim Pastor of a congregation in southeast Indiana, near Cincinnati.
Congratulations Class of 2015
Mark Bockhaus has been a member of Shepherd of the Hills his entire life. Over that time we estimate that he has consumed at least 585 donuts. He was baptized by Pastor Gary McCluskey and confirmed by Pastor Dana. Mark has been a member of the ushering crew since birth. Some of his SOTH
highlights include Sunday School with Mrs. Wendland and serving on Church Council. Mark also loves
the family environment at SOTH. Mark has lived in the same house in
Fort Collins while attending Shepardson Elementary, Lesher Middle
School, Poudre High School (2 years) and Fort Collins High School (2
years). He is a great student and currently has a 3.998 GPA. Mark is in
National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. He
works about 20 hours a week at Hunter and Associates in the shipping
and receiving department. In the fall, Mark will be attending Colorado
State University and will study Business.
Laura Lenczycki will be graduating from Poudre High School, IB Program on May
23rd.
She plans to attend a small, liberal arts Lutheran college and major in chemistry.
When asked what some of her favorite memories are from SOTH, she answered,
I really enjoyed the New Orleans national gathering trip and being in the Super
Dome. I liked that there were so many Christians together. It was uplifting. I also
enjoyed writing the Christmas program because I wanted to give back to the
congregation.
Laura also shared some favorite parts of the Bible. She likes when Jesus washes
the disciples' feet because it shows how Jesus humbled himself and why He came to earth. It reminds
her how the first shall be last and the last shall be first. It shows a relatable Jesus. In addition she likes
how Jesus is reassuring when he is hanging on the cross next to convicts. When He says that tomorrow
they will be with him in paradise, it fills her with hope. Thank you.
Craigslist Home Health Care Dangers
Craigslist can be a great place for older adults on a fixed income to save money on a wide
range of products, and it can be a great source for making a little extra cash by selling unwanted items.
But there’s a problem - Craigslist is a haven for scammers. Transactions on the popular site
involve complete strangers. They aren’t vetted by Craigslist. You don’t know these people or
anything about them.
Here at the Older Adult & Caregiver Services program at Lutheran Family Services, Rocky
Mountains, we find there lurks a particular danger on Craigslist, one aimed directly at vulnerable older adults and their families.
This danger comes in the form of Craigslist ads offering in-home services for older adults.
These ads are scattered through various Craigslist categories and offer to provide the services under the heading of home healthcare workers, CNAs (certified nursing assistants),
caregivers, or personal attendants.
Here at OACS’ our Geriatric Care Managers know that the family is trying to do the right
thing for their older loved one. The family’s vision is to hire a compassionate home
healthcare professional to provide a few visits each week to assist the older adult with simple household tasks such laundry or food preparation. Or perhaps they are seeking a live-in
helper, to assist the older adult with more personal tasks, such as bathing or dressing.
But you, as the consumer, have no way of knowing if these people have experience in working with older adults or if they have a criminal background. Are they bonded? Are they insured? Do they know CPR?
The greatest danger lies in those Craigslist advertisers who say they want to be paid “under
the table,” or those who offer to handle paying their own taxes, to save you the hassle.
It sounds like such a great deal. Your older loved one gets the help they need to age in
place. You save money and avoid payroll headaches. And your new Craigslist home helper
takes home a bigger paycheck. Everyone wins! So, what’s wrong with that?
Just about everything.
Lutheran Family Services urges you to do your research. As our grandmothers used to say,
“If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.”
There are numerous risks and hidden costs involved in hiring someone off Craigslist, and in
paying a caregiver under the table. Here are a few concerns to consider:
Background checks: Will you trust your older loved one to just anyone? Are you confident
that you can do a thorough criminal/driving/drug background check on
someone?
Home health agencies generally conduct thorough criminal background checks on employees before hiring, and use verification agencies to confirm their results. That is difficult to
accomplish on your own.
Of course, if you are hiring a home health agency on your own, without the help of a Geriatric Care Manager, you still need to ask a lot of questions. What types of screenings are performed on caregivers before you hire them? Criminal background check—federal or state?
Continued...
Drug screening? Ask if their employees are fully bonded and insured. Are they certified in
CPR or do they have any health-related training?
Here at OACS, our Geriatric Care Managers handle all of those questions and more. We only work with professional home health agencies that we have successful professional relationships with. And please note, OACS doesn’t collect any so-called “referral fees” from
home health agencies when we refer them to our clients. Our only goal is to connect the
best agencies to serve the needs of our clients and their families.
Theft/Abuse: Think about it -- if your relationship with your caregiver is under the table, it is
illegal and in some sense, a secret. As a result, your caregiver knows there's less chance that
you'll report abuse, theft, or other problems. The feeling of being able to "get away" with
more can lead to serious problems such as theft, neglect or deliberate abuse.
IRS: Home healthcare agencies take care of taxes paid on employee’s pay. If you hire a private in-home caregiver, the IRS considers that person your employee if you pay them more
than $1,800 in a calendar year.
Therefore you are responsible for withholding and paying taxes, including income tax, Social
Security, Medicare, and other state and local taxes, etc.
If you fail to take care of taxes you are considered to be defrauding the government and the
IRS will make you responsible for back taxes and penalties, which can be steep.
Liability: Many professional caregivers are bonded and carry disability insurance in case of
injury. Under-the-table caregivers usually don’t come with these safeguards. If your caregiver is not bonded and insured, you or your older loved one could be liable if she gets hurt or
disabled from an injury or accident she claims to have suffered on the job. By hiring under
the table, you have little protection if she chooses to seek damages.
Loss of benefits: This under-the-table arrangement appears to be less expensive than using
caregivers from an agency, at least until it comes time to document the caregiving costs to
qualify for Veterans Administration (VA) benefits (no adequate documentation is available).
Likewise, you may need to prove to Medicaid that funds spent on the Craigslist “under the
table” caregiver were not gifts.
Reliability: It is not uncommon for Craigslist caregivers to quit unexpectedly or simply not
show up. This can throw a family into chaos as they scramble to fill the gap, and it is potentially dangerous for the older adult. On the other hand, a home-health agency sends a replacement if a staffer cannot fulfill their assignment.
Even better, a Geriatric Care Manager who oversees your older loved one’s needs will be diligent in getting a replacement sent promptly, and insure home health workers complete all
their duties. Geriatric Care Managers are advocates for their clients, and the older adult’s
health, happiness and safety is of paramount importance. If you would like to know more
about what a certified Geriatric Care Manager can do for you or your older loved one, contact OACS intake coordinator Diane Cohn, at 303-217-5864.
Costa Rica Team News
The Costa Rican Mission Trip team would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your tremendous financial and prayerful support of us this year. With the $2,200 raised from our recent
Costa Rican Dinner and Silent Auction evening, our grand total to date is $21,000. We would
also like to share again who is going and what we will be doing. THANK YOU!
In the words of Robin who is our contact with Lifetree Adventures (the mission trip branch of
The Group), here is what we will be up to….
“Our focus on this trip is to come alongside Timothy in learning more about his Bible translation
work and his ministry to the Cabecar Indians. The tangible projects that we will do during the
week will focus mostly on either helping him out on his coffee farm, which is the major source of
revenue that his family has to support themselves, and doing some other projects around his
farm. He has several shelters that he has built/is in the process of building for the Indians to stay
in when they are traveling by foot from one village to another, so part of the group will most
likely help with those projects.
We will hopefully go to a Cabecar church on Sunday and experience worship with them, which is
way different from church that you all are used to back home. I think you’ll like it a lot! And
there will be some time to maybe visit a Cabecar in his home and share some prayer and scripture together there as well.”
With grateful servant-oriented hearts and more to come,
Averi, Katelyn and Darin Luze, Eric and Lynn Bockhaus, Holli and Whitney Knutson, Jane
Homann, Alex and Austin Blaho and Kris and Laura Lenczycki

Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp, Summer 2015 Camperships Available
We are encouraging any youth from our congregation (having completed 1st-12th grade) to
sign up for a program through Sky Ranch. Shepherd of the Hills will then pay the equivalent to
1/3 of your cost (roughly equal to deposit for week long camps but family pays this first). Sky
Ranch programming can be found at www.SkyRanchColorado.org or call them at 970.493.5258
or stop by to visit at 805 S. Shields St. (in St. Thomas Chapel). Programs for younger grades are
1/2 week at $170 and increase to $375 for a week. Please work with Sky Ranch for registration,
details and camp questions. Also notify Kris Lenczycki or Dawn in the church office that you will
need SOTH to pay 1/3 of your cost and we will do that directly to Sky Ranch. Camperships do
not work for Family Camp, June 28 to July 3, but families are encouraged to consider this option
(spaces fill up fast). Kris Lenczycki at 493-4869/ [email protected] for campership
questions. Happy Camping!

Where Everybody Knows My Name
One of the better TV shows in the last few years was “Cheers”, and one of the neat things about the
show was the opening song which had a line that went “Where everybody knows my name”. Isn’t it
true that we like to be recognized by folks we know? We like by being called by our name. We like
to gather together with folks we know who have shared beliefs.
One of the very hardest things we do is to walk into a room where we don’t know anyone and no
one knows us. We experience a certain amount of dread and angst going into a situation like that.
This brings us to two thoughts that can be learned from this 1. It is really important to spend the
time to learn the names of the folks in the congregation so that the church becomes a friendlier
place to be. 2. When new folks come to church it is important to go out of your way to introduce
yourself and to learn their name. Spend a little time and energy to help make Shepherd of the Hills
a friendly place where everybody knows your name.

Food Bank Drive
Through our Benevolence ($1500), Alternative Giving Fair ($666.66) Lenten Services offering,
Lenten Folders, and the Food Drive ($2371.58) we were able to donate a total of $4538.24 to
the Food Bank this year.
It doesn’t stop there! This March & April, the Board of Directors for the Food Bank and the Davis
Wealth Management Group Advisors at Wells Fargo are sponsoring the Einstein Challenge.
These leaders have pledged up to $40,000 and are challenging the community to match that
amount. Our donation of $4538.24 will help them reach that goal and will go twice as far to
provide food for the hungry in Larimer County. Thank You SOTH for all of your support and generosity with our Food Drive.
Some facts about Hunger in Larimer County:
29,034 unduplicated individuals were served through their Food Share fresh food pantry.
8.9 million pounds of food distributed to low income seniors, families and individuals.
77,361 meals & 76,701 snacks prepared for and served to children at 10 area Kids Café sites.
23,282 week-end backpacks provided to students needing assistance over the week-end and
during school breaks.
102,518 snacks supplied to schools and after school programs through Kids Link.
2,417 volunteers contributed 34,254 hours to assist with Food Bank operations, which is equivalent to 16 full time staff members.
For more info, to schedule a tour, or to volunteer, call the Food Bank at 493-4477.

RE:Spond Crews Needed!
RE:Spond Worship Crew: We need 3 to 5 people who would be interested in planning the opening
worship, closing worship, and opening songs for these four days. This does not mean you have to be
the band for the worship but you could do both. J We want to think outside of the box with our
worship for this event. If you love music, love liturgy, and love thinking about things in a new way
this is the job for you!
RE:Spond Cookout Crew: We need 3 to 5 people who would be interested in planning and prepping
the meal for Thursday night and taking care of the hotdog roast on Saturday night. If you love to
cook, grill, organize then this is the job for you!
RE:Spond Service Project Crew: We need 4 to 6 people who would be interested in planning and
leading a service project. Several service projects planned but we are in need of a couple more. The
leading part would be going to the location and helping to organize our group by making sure
everyone is there and leading the closing (a prayer) at the end of the project time. If you have ideas
for community outreach projects or love leading people this is the job for you!
To RE:Spond, contact Diane Patterson at [email protected] or 970-214-8600 or the church office!
Faith Family Hospitality Hosting:
Our next rotation for supporting St.Lukes’s Episcopal with housing and feeding the four Faith Families is
June 28th thru July 5th. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available during that week:
Setting up the rooms on Sunday the 28th – taking down and cleaning the rooms on Sunday the 4th – furnishing, cooking and serving an evening meal during the week or breakfast on Saturday morning – being
an evening host or an overnight host – furnishing food for their breakfast each morning – provide department store, gas, or supermarket gift cards. If you have questions or would like to volunteer, see Dawn in
the office or call Lois at 226-1046.
Thank you for your support.
Funeral helpers
It’s always sad to hear there is a funeral scheduled. We have had four so far this year. I want to thank Pat
Madson and Joyce Hahn for their time and efforts in making calls to find helpers and salads for these funerals. A very special THANK YOU to those who answer the call by saying “Yes, I can help or I can bring a salad.”
The families are very appreciative of this service we provide for their loved one. If you are not on our calling
list for funerals and would like to help out, please call Lois at 226-1046 or Annette at 484-6812.

Gully Greenhouse Fundraiser
Several of our youth and adults will be spending their day at Gully Greenhouse on Saturday, May 9th (the
day before Mother's Day) and they hope to see you there as well.
Many of our Costa Rica bound youth (and possibly a few others as well) will be participating in the Gully
Carry-out Fundraiser from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. This Fundraiser is designed to allow groups to raise needed funds while providing Gully and their customers with needed help. Youth from Shepherd of the Hills
will be available to help customers carry purchases from the greenhouse to their vehicles. They will also
provide drinks to thirsty customers as they wait to check out, and they will place purchases on shelves to
relieve weary arms as people wait in line. In addition, our youth will assist Gully with any behind-thescenes tasks such as assembling boxes or organizing work areas, and they will make sure customers have
boxes, carts, and wagons to make their shopping easier. All participating youth and one supervising adult
will be paid an hourly wage.
From 9:00 am until 3:00 pm, while the youth are working and beyond, the Costa Rica bound adults will be
cooking and serving hotdogs and bratwurst. In addition, chips and cold beverages will be available for
purchase both in combination with the sandwiches and on their own. Gully provides the grills and all
profits are ours to keep.
Don’t forget to bring your Gully Greenhouse gift cards that you can purchase at the Welcome Center!
Rent-a-Teen
We have had some early requests for our teens already. It is that time of year for spring cleaning, yard
pick-ups, any one of numerous odd jobs that may just not get done without Rent-A-Teen! Of course the
kids are available for dog walking, babysitting, baking, and other household chores. There is no set price
for Rent-A-Teen, all jobs are completed to your satisfaction for a free-will offering.
Most of the kids are pretty busy finishing school work, and of course that must come first! But please contact me with your needs and I’ll see what I can do to fulfill them as soon as possible. The end of May and
June are going to be the best times to schedule a teen. But, please, call me or email with your requests.
The kids are ready, willing and able!

A big Thank You to the folks that donated their Thrivent Choice Dollars to
SOTH. Through that program, we
have been blessed with over $5,500!
Ambassadors
Hey gang, we need your help!!! With
Pastor gone for the summer we need
to circle the wagons and help each
other to bring in the sheaves!
As we ramp up the outreach program
sending out individual mailers to new
residents we need a way to identify
the new folks that come to church on
Sunday. We will be asking the greeters and ushers to help identify folks
that they have not seen before, then,
we need a group of members to act as
ambassadors to welcome and share
with the newbies a little about
Shepherd of the Hills.
We need about 8 members who
would like to take on that mission. If
you are in church and are told that
there is a new visitor by an usher or
greeter, Introduce yourself, welcome
them and just make sure they have
what they came for. Get names and
whatever else they are willing to
share.
This is not a high intensity position it is
just an outreach ministry that requires
a big smile and a listening ear.
Thank you so much for your help!

Adventure Beckons!
A long-held dream is coming true for SOTH’s music director, Kari
Fedde, and her husband Chris. At the end of May, they’ll be moving to New Zealand to open a new chapter in their adventurous
lives. With eldest son Kevin married and settled in North Dakota,
and younger son Cameron graduating from Valparaiso University,
Kari and Chris decided to “seize the moment” and go to live in a
place they’ve been interested in for many years.
They’ll be sorely missed here at Shepherd of the Hills! Both as our
former parish associate and as music director, Kari has touched
many lives in the congregation. She has enlivened worship services
with a broad spectrum of musical styles and offerings, from bluegrass to cantatas. Homebound members relished her cheery visits. Kari had a real gift for spotting, incorporating, and encouraging
members’ musical skills, whether they were beginning to learn an
instrument or were already accomplished musicians. That has given the congregation the precious opportunity to see some of our
young people grow into truly gifted performers using their talents
for Christ. Kari has helped the choir and bell choir to flourish.
Chris, meanwhile, as a congregation member, has contributed his
technical expertise to help with the audio-visual system, and lends
his voice to the bass section of the choir.
We wish Godspeed to Kari and Chris, and hope that as they see
New Zealand’s many flocks of sheep, they’ll have happy thoughts
about their years at Shepherd of the Hills!

Thanks In Advance For Remembering!
Often as we change from school-year routines to more relaxed
summer schedules, church offerings become easy to
forget. We’re so grateful for the faithful stewardship at SOTH,
and urge each of you to continue that through the summer
months so that we can continue to meet ongoing budget
expenses. Envelopes will be available in the pews if you’re
planning to be on vacation and would like to give your offering in
advance, or you can sign up for your Realm account and sign up
for Online Giving. Thank you for your ongoing support!

person to enter
the Kingdom of
God than for a
camel to go
through the eye
of a needle."
"What this Bible verse means to me is
that Jesus favors the "poor" and less fortunate because they know how to be less
dependent on material things and they
know how to look to God for help whereas "rich" people rely on money and servants and overlook God's willingness to
help."
"The dynamics, discussions and opinions
between me and my classmates over
these last 3 years of Sunday School and
Confirmation have added to my memorable experiences at church."
Mark will be completing 8th grade at
Blevins Middle School soon where he has
participated in pre-AP classes, Science
Olympiad and recently received an
award at the state Science Fair. In fall he
will attend Poudre High School.
Some of Mark's other favorites are food,
family, movies and sci-fi/fantasy.
