Parish Mass Book - Readings on page 59
One’s life does not Consist of Possessions
A columnist once wrote about a man who had achieved
everything in his ambition when he was once a
president of a large corporation. This man, one day
thought of himself and said, “Now I have everything and
have reached the age of retirement, but I live with my wife in
the same house and never talk to each other. I don’t know my
own children, and my children don’t know me too. I don’t know
anything or anybody apart from myself. Everything is all about
me; but I am retiring in a month’s time and don’t know even
how to cook any food.” What shall I do?
This man in the above short story is guilty of two things:
1. Had a wrong set of values and life priorities.
2. had failed to allow life to enrich him with it’s God’s given
treasures.
He had refused to become educated and to grow up into
the whole human being. He had organised his life
without reference to God. Such life in the end can bring
nothing in a person’s life, but only frustration as
Qoheleth calls it vanities in reading One and Jesus in
the Gospel said; he is like the one who stores up
treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to
God. These readings are not only speaking about
material riches but also our God’s given gifts and talents
not used to the benefit of others. Our today’s world is
being possessed by greed. The rich people and nations
are always ready to exploit and grasp from the poor by
all means possible and likewise the poor try to fight
back, resulting to present chaos in the world. Pope
Francis said this week that our world is at war- not war
of any kind but “War of interest.”
