Cody Collier
To my Fellow
PCOC’ites
As we close
out 2015 I would
like to start off
with saying
farewell to you
all. I will not be
running for
President again
this coming year.
Though this past year has been a
fun one, going forward I feel it
best that someone that is able to
dedicate more time to the position
should be the person to fill the job.
I am glad we were able to start our
mentoring program back up for
some of our novices. A big thank
you to all of our members that
helped with that!
That being said, it is time
for the holidays! At our next
meeting we will be handing out
some awesome gifts to you all that
you will find quite useful out in the
field! Thank you to Bill and Mike
for acquiring these items for us.
Our next meeting will be a fun
one. We will have our gifts
handed out, we will be making a
presentation to the CRPA and
another special guest as well as
holding our annual nominations
for office, and hopefully hold one
last raffle for the year.
Thank you to Sultan for
heading up our campout hunt in
Victor’s absence. The weather
was cold and the animals were
few, but hey, it’s all about the
food! Also congratulations to the
winning team! This next hunt will
be even colder out there so be sure
to bust out the heavy duty jackets
and the long johns.
I want to wish everyone a
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah,
and a Happy New Year! Also, be
safe out there in the field! Even
though it’s cold as hell out there,
remember to stay hydrated.
Once again everyone, thank
you for this past year. For all of
your support and fun times. I
greatly appreciate it. So, thank
you!
Sinceriously,
Cody Collier

DECEMBER
2015
The Predator Press
PCOC December 1, 2015
Meeting
By Bill Saksa
This will be a special
and critical meeting
that you do not want
to miss. It will be the
start of the holiday
spirit and enjoying the
club camaraderie.
All the elected board
positions are up for
nominations and we
encourage every member to consider
who might have the skills and time to
serve next year on the board. As for
all clubs, it is vital to have strong
board members, mentors and
volunteers willing to help. You can
have another member nominate you.
After the January board elections take
place there will be many committee
positions that need to be filled.
All members will be receiving many
useful holiday gifts plus the first
Predator Nation magazine. Here is a
chance for everyone to arrive early
and have dinner plus we will have a
cake for everyone to enjoy after
dinner. We will be giving a thank you
to Nazani and Arpeni for their
excellent service during our
meetings.
Don will be giving us the history and
latest information on the December
memorial hunt.
We will be giving recognition to a
couple of our members.
Our own member, Rick Travis, is
also the Programs Director of the
California Rifle and Pistol
Association. He gave us a very
compelling November program on
the CRPA Weekend Youth Camp and
the future of hunting in California.
The next generation of hunters is
critical with an ever-present decline
of hunting license purchases in our
state.
Each youth walks away with a Hunter
Education Certificate, Hunting
License, hunting experience, game
preparation, game cooking and a
game cooked meal. They have 6
Weekend Youth Camps scheduled for
2016 and can use our help and
support.
In lieu of a “White Elephant
Exchange” as announced at our
November meeting we would
encourage all our membership to
make a donation at our meeting to
help support the CRPA Weekend
Youth Camps for next year.
Kudos to Hank Haynes for already
making a donation to Rick at the
November meeting to sponsor one
youth for a weekend. Let’s all join in
and make a donation and help make
these camps a success.
This is also a good time to pay your
2016 dues and be ahead of schedule.
Happy Holidays to everyone,
Bill Saksa
Board Member at Large 2015

November Club
Hunt Results:
The coyotes won
this hunt. This was
the poorest
hunting that I can
remember since I
started critter hunting. The hunting
in MNP hasn't been that good, but
this was ridiculous. Only 4 teams of
8 hunters showed for this weekend
campout hunt and check-in on
Sunday morning, November 15.
Our dinner at the Rocks went well.
Sultan did most of the heavy lifting
for dinner on Saturday and breakfast
on Sunday morning. Everyone
cooked their steaks to their own
liking. I heard the chats at the
campfire continued until 2 AM
Sunday morning – too late for Ed
Moeller and me. We had the alarm
set for 5:15 AM. Ed and I saw more
animals in a few hours before the
hunt started than the rest of the 2
days of the club hunt.
Reynolds, Henkhaus, Kingdon and
Zane weathered the elements by
sleeping in the back of their open
bed pickups. These are real he-men.
McGilvery and Abassy slept on beds
in a tent camper. The weather was
about normal for this time of year.
Light winds where we hunted.
Thirty-six degrees when we woke up
Saturday morning.
First place was won by the team of
Mike Reynolds and Steve Henkhaus
(1 coyote). Congratulations to the
winners. Seems every team saw one
of more animals, but had trouble
getting them lined up to pull a
trigger. Fred Kingdon and Newton
Zane paired up. Sultan Abassy and
Dennis McGilvery made up another
team. Our next hunt will be the
Memorial Hunt on December 1113th. Details will be sent about a
week before the hunt and at I'll
share some details at the club
meeting on Tuesday, December 1st.
December Memorial Hunt
Announcement: This is the hunt
where all the members of the
predator clubs in southern CA come
together at the end of a weekend
hunt. It is a good time to see other
predator hunters that we see only
once a year. This weekend hunt
dates coincide with the dates
published in our own PCOC hunt
schedule. The format of this check-in
has changed since the F&G
abolishment of giving awards for
contest hunting. We just have to
adjust to the current law. I'll tell
more about the details of the hunt at
the Tuesday, Dec 1st membership
meeting. Then I'll also send
complete details in an email on
Sunday, Dec 6th. There will be 2
winners at this hunt. The first will be
the overall winner of all the clubs.
Then we'll also have a PCOC winner.
There will be lunch for sale at the
check-in site. The host club will have
a rifle raffle. There will be plenty of
other raffle items as well. If you
can't make the hunt, try to make the
check-in and get your face in a
group photo. Email me if you have
any questions.
Predator Nation Magazines: The
Fall issues of the Predator Nation
magazine have arrived. I'll have
them labeled with your name so you
can pickup your copy at the
December 1st membership meeting.
These are free to 2015 paid
members. Another perk for being a
PCOC member. A winter issue is yet
to come.
3
Catchall Drawer: The American
Crow season starts December 5, and
ends on April 6, 2016. ΘΧ Thank
you John Bernath for providing 22
homemade animal drags to the club.
We'll include some of these in our
new member starter kit. ΘΧ If you
would like to learn something about
the Phoenix Varmint Callers, Inc,
check out their newsletter called
'Predator Tales' at: www.pvci.org
ΘΧ Badger, Bobcat and Gray Fox
seasons are now open until February
28th. ΘΧ "The wild life of today is
not ours to do with as we please.
The original stock was given to us in
trust for the benefit both of the
present and the future. We must
render an accounting of this trust to
those who come after us." Theodore
Roosevelt ΘΧ
Health, Welfare & Sympathy:
Tris Swan recently had surgery for a
hernia repair and then followed up
with back surgery. Hope that both
surgeries were successful and he is
back to hunting soon. ΘΧ I am very
sad to report that Fred Kingdon, our
secretary, recently lost his wife
Terryll on November 21st. We send
our most sincere condolences to
him. ΘΧ By the time of this writing,
John Bernath will have had a hip
replacement. Hope that he recovers
soon. ΘΧ Bob Peters' stepson,
Steven, had a motorcycle accident
recently and Bob has been very busy
nursing him back to health. Hope
that he is 100% healed soon. ΘΧ
Thanks fur reading my articles. Don
Jamroz – Hunts, Pins, Points guy.
Bill Saksa introduces PCOC member
Rick Travis as our November
membership meeting speaker. Rick
is the Programs Director for the CA
Rifle and Pistol Assoc. He talked
mainly about the youth programs
that the CRPA has developed.
New member, Steve Childs, talked
about 'Project Coyote' at our
November membership meeting.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
We need volunteers to head up a
committee to bring in interesting
and informative guest speakers to
our monthly meetings. Remember
the club is run by volunteer
members! Please contact one of
the board members if you can help.
The club is only as good as its
members. Don't be a lump. W e need
everybody's contributions to make the
club work and to make it interesting. If
you have something you can contribute,
a specialty you'd like to talk about, an
article you can submit, a guest speaker
you think would be interesting please let
me know or one of the board members.
"Don't complain if you don't vote". Be a
part of the solution not the problem.
Magazine Exchange: The magazine
exchange at the membership
meetings is starting to be successful.
Take your magazines to the club
meetings for others to hare -- then,
pickup a few for yourself. <>

Memorial Hunt Raffle
Tickets: Ricky Macey is again
selling rifle raffle tickets to
benefit the Memorial Hunt.
The National club needs some
profit in order to purchase
other raffle items to make
this event a success. Please
be generous and buy a handful
of tickets. See Ricky Macey.
Lead Shot/Non-Lead Shot:
Be sure to start managing
your lead shotshells.
Remember that starting next
season, you may use only nonlead when taking critters.
Therefore, make a concerted
effort to use your lead ammo
this season.

75 animals taken and will receive
an award at our Awards
Presentation this spring.
Fleabags: I have more fleabags
if anyone wants one.
Experienced Hunters:
If you have some interest in taking
out a novice on a hunt, please talk
to me. We need to get more
novices trained.
Ron Stevens & Steve Childs –
Thanks: This is a Big 'Thank
You' to
our Ron Stephens and SteveC
hilds for attending the Sept 9
F&G Commission meeting
in Fresno. These guys take
the time and use their own
money to attend these
meetings. They are our
proponents to keep our
predator hunting rights. Lets
give Ron a big hand.
As a side note, not on my agenda –
I am having a rough time trying to
get experienced hunters to take
out Novices. We have 17 novices
and most would like a ride this
season. Please consider taking out
one or more of them. Don J.
God Bless America!

IMR 4955 lands between IMR 4451 and
IMR 7977 on the burn rate chart and is
an ideal choice for many popular calibers
such as 270 Winchester, 25-06
Remington and the 300 Winchester
Magnum. Enduron® Technology allows
accuracy to be maintained over longer
shooting sessions, thanks to a special
additive which helps remove copper
fouling as the rifle is fired.
This environmentally friendly formulation
delivers ideal loading
densities in medium and big game
hunting calibers.
Ballistic variations based on climate
conditions are a thing of the past with
IMR 4955,
4955 thanks to its temperature
insensitivity. From extreme heat to
extreme cold, shooters will see uniform
velocities. IMR 4955 has a small grain
size, making it extremely accurate and
easy to flow through a powder measure.
With the addition of IMR 4955 to the
series of Enduron® Technology powders,
reloaders can find a technically
advanced powder for reloading anything
from 223 Remington all the way up to the
500 Nitro Express.

DFG Q & A
Submitted by Ken Dunn
Regarding the
Lead Ammo Ban
Submitted by Michael Cantor
Selling mounted trophies
Question: I received a collection of museumquality African game trophies in a divorce
settlement and would like to sell them. I recently
moved to California but the mounts are still in
Alaska. They are not animals that exist in
California. Can I sell them on eBay? I want to
unload these animals legally. I have read the
statutes. I need to know if I can work with
someone in Fish and Game, show them the
collection, and get their advice. Alaska Fish and
Game already gave me an email saying they
could be moved to California and sold. (Mary
Jane S., Sacramento)
Answer: You should contact the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service about any mounts that you
would like to import to California and sell. The
sale of birds or mammals found in the wild in
California is prohibited by Fish and Game Code,
section 3039. In addition, California Penal Code,
section 653o prohibits the importation for
commercial purposes, sale and possession with
intent to sell a number of African wildlife
species that may be in your collection.
Carrying rifles through a game refuge?
Question: How do I legally travel through a
wildlife game refuge on the way to hunting on
the other side of the refuge? With bolt action
rifles, we take the bolt out so that it’s not a
functioning gun anymore. What about with a
lever action gun? How can we legally cross
through the game refuge? (Erin)
Answer: The possession of firearms is not
prohibited “when traveling through any game
refuges when the firearms are taken apart or
encased and unloaded. When the traveling is
done on a route other than a public highway or
other public thoroughfare or right of way, notice
shall be given to the California Department of
Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) at least 24 hours
before that traveling. The notice shall give the
name and address of the person intending to
travel through the refuge, the name of the refuge,
the approximate route, and the approximate time
when that person intends to travel through the
refuge” (Fish and Game Code, section 10506). #

In October, 2013, California Gov.
Jerry Brown signed a ban on lead
hunting ammunition into law. The
ban called for the complete phasing
out of all lead shot and bullets for
hunting by mid-2019 at the latest,
with regulations and phased-in
implementation to begin on July 1,
2015. The law is ostensibly intended
to reduce the introduction of toxic
materials into the environment
and protect the state’s wildlife
populations.
The first phase of the ban will begin
this summer and requires non-lead
ammo be used for all hunting on
California’s state-run wildlife areas
and reserves. Lead ammunition was
already banned in the state’s condor
areas, but beginning in July, no lead
ammo will be permitted on California
Department of Fish and Wildlife
areas.
In July, 2016, the second phase will
take effect. At that time, lead
ammunition will not be permitted for
use when hunting upland game birds
except at licensed game bird clubs.
Lead shotgun ammunition will also
be banned for small game animals,
furbearing animals, non-game
mammals, non-game birds, and any
wildlife taken for depredation
control. Lead rifle ammunition will
remain legal.
The third and final phase of the ban
takes effect on July 1, 2019, when
non-lead ammunition will be
required for all hunting purposes
within the state of California.
9
The ban is controversial, both within
California and across the U.S. The
National Shooting Sports Foundation,
opposed to the ban, claims that
the science backing a ban is
incomplete and points out that
Norway enacted a similar ban in
2005 but recently repealed it
because there was not enough
scientific evidence to support it.
Other groups opposed to the ban
claim that a shortage of non-lead
ammunition and the higher prices
associated with what there is will
reduce the state’s hunting population
and have a negative impact on
wildlife management.
Critics also point out that a reduced
number of hunters will cost the state
revenue. Efforts to repeal the law,
however have been unsuccessful so
far.
The California Fish and Game
Commission are implanting the law
in three stages:
1.
On July 1, 2015, no lead
ammo may be used to hunt in state
run wildlife areas and ecological
reserves.
2.
On July 1, 2016, no lead
ammunition can be used when
hunting with a shotgun for upland
game birds, furbearing mammals,
and non-game mammals and birds.
3.
A total ban on hunting with
lead ammo goes into effect on July
1, 2019.
