Special Events
From the Director
Dear Friends and Patrons of Music:
We are fortunate indeed to live in a community where the arts matter. The Schwob School of Music
has become a magnet for some of the most talented students and faculty to be found anywhere. Just
this fall, thirteen of our performers won or placed in their categories in the state collegiate competition of the Music Teachers National Association, and in the winter, seventeen of our singers won
or placed in the state competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. These events
require each performer to present a full recital, competing in the same category as graduate students
from larger institutions. Last summer, pianist Alina Sarkisyan was awarded a third prize and honorable mention in the International Russian Music Competition in San Jose, CA and was selected to
perform at the winners’ concert by the decision of the international jury. At this time of year, almost
every night presents another opportunity to hear these remarkable students perform at RiverCenter,
and I am so pleased when you bring your guests to our concerts. You can always view the latest
concert information at http://columbusstate.edu/music.
Our students this year hail from fifteen countries and from all over the U.S. As you will see in the
following pages, our graduates are faring very well in their pursuit of opportunities for advanced
study and teaching positions. We maintain a number of collaborative relationships that enhance the
education and culture of our city and our region, through the professional activities of our faculty
and through the Music Preparatory Division and its programs: Voices of the Valley, the Columbus
Community Orchestra, and the Young Artist Program. This spring, we host the Georgia Music
Teachers Association state auditions, and in 2014 we will begin a new relationship with the American Guild of Organists that will bring young organists to Legacy Hall on a periodic basis.
I am especially pleased this year to announce the return of fully staged opera to the Schwob School
of Music. On January 11 and 13, we present Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love in the Bill Heard Theatre.
A comic opera in the famed Bel Canto style, this production will be sung in English and presented
with full orchestra, sets, and scenery – it will look as good as it sounds! Our special thanks go to
Mrs. Betsy Leebern, Mr. and Mrs. John Holt, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Waddell for their generous support of the opera production which is also supported by the G. Gunby Jordan Endowment
for Operatic Studies and the John and Sally Walden Endowment. Bravi, tutti!
We owe our past and present success to visionary leaders, incredible faculty, and you, our supporters. CSU now awards over a half million dollars in music scholarships annually – something few of
our peer institutions can say. At the same time, we are seeking creative synergies that enable us to
accomplish more with the resources we have. Today’s challenge is to make our programs sustainable
in the “new normal” of reduced state support for higher education. I am happy to announce that,
through the generosity and leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pezold, an endowment has been created
to establish The Sam and Jacquie Rawls Distinguished Professorship in Music, with gifts from many
donors that were matched by the Pezolds. We thank all of these donors and other generous supporters who have created endowments and planned gifts to the Schwob School. I encourage each of you
to consider how you can help the Schwob School of Music to secure its future.
Musically yours,
Dr. Ron Wirt, Interim Director

Vince receives congratulations after a
Rotary Club talk.
He says, “What I loved the most about the Schwob were the amazing opportunities offered. The Schwob not only had the most elite instructors, but also brought
in world-class musicians that allowed for the best experience possible for all
music majors alike. I truly credit my successes as an educator to the vigorous
and complete preparation I had from the Schwob. The Schwob School of Music
produces the highest caliber of teachers and musicians, and I am truly honored
to have been a part of it.”
...And we are proud to have him as one of our own. Congratulations, Vincent!

Interview
Faculty
Accomplishments
Constantina Tsolainou
Paul S. and Jean R. Amos Distinguished Chair in Music
We interviewed the Schwob School’s Director of Choral Activities
last summer:
It is now your seventh year at Columbus State. How has the school
changed during that time?
“Administrators
have visited us
from other
institutions,
looking to use
the Schwob
School as a
model for their
new buildings—
what a
compliment!”
CT: When I first arrived, I reconfigured the vocal ensembles to better
serve the voice majors here in the Schwob School of Music. Since then
we have tried to customize the ensemble offerings each semester to satisfy the needs of the voice area. For example, this semester we have the
large ensemble, Choral Union, preparing a Mozart Requiem for November 4, and a mixed ensemble of voice majors, University Singers, preparing a varied program for October 18. In addition, we have the Opera
Chorus preparing for a production in January. In the spring semester,
there will be at least three ensembles, but I’m not sure what they will be
at this point. Last spring we had a mixed ensemble, a women’s ensemble
and a men’s quartet. The possibilities change with the fluctuation of our
voice major population.
You conduct three choirs regularly at CSU and also teach classes in
French diction. Do you still find time to travel professionally?
CT: This year I have been named Acting Artistic Director of the Arts
District Chorale in Dallas, Texas. For the last several years, I have been
their principal guest conductor. With the retirement of the founder and
former artistic director, I will be traveling to Dallas for three different concerts this season, in addition to the other engagements that I
have scheduled. Many of us here at Schwob work to balance our travel
schedule with our teaching schedule in order to maintain a professional
profile nationally.
What do visitors most often say about the Schwob School of Music?
CT: Most people comment on the fabulous facilities that we enjoy everyday. Most schools cannot provide the classroom, rehearsal, and performance spaces that we take for granted. Administrators have visited us
from other institutions, looking to use the Schwob School as a model for
their new buildings—what a compliment!
What are you most excited about in the coming year?
CT: Each year brings new and different excitement. No year has been
better, just different. The difference this year is the addition of three
more graduate students in the voice area. We are hoping that, with the
increase in graduate numbers and the higher quality undergraduate
students that we are attracting, our vocal forces will be able to tackle
more challenging repertoire both in the choral area and in the opera
productions.
Dr. Michelle DeBruyn served as the music director for the CSU Theater Department’s
production of Caroline, or Change, for which she received a director’s nomination from
the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. She presented at both the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) and the Alabama Music Educators Association
(AMEA) with her colleagues Dr. Andrée Martin and Dr. Robert Murray on the similarities
in breathing technique for wind instrumentalists and vocalists. In addition, Dr. DeBruyn
earned Level III certification in Somatic VoiceworkSM The LoVetri Method, during the
summer of 2012.
Professor Joseph Golden released his new CD, RiverCenter Favorites on the Jordan Concert Organ, available Fall, 2012 through the American Guild of Organists.
Paul Hostetter, The Ethel Foley Chair in Orchestral Conducting, led performances by the
National Cup Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall; the Naples, FL Philharmonic; the New York
Concerti Sinfonietta; the PAI Festival Orchestra in Kingston, PA; and the Sequitur Ensemble as part of a residency at the University of Pittsburgh. He also served as a clinician
for Music in the Parks in Atlanta and is working on a new conducting text to be published
by Connect4Education, Inc.
Alexander Kobrin, The L. Rexford Whiddon Distinguished Faculty Chair in Music, performed concert tours in Europe, Asia and the U.S., was guest artist at MTNA National
Conference in NYC, and counted three students as prizewinners of international piano
competitions in the U.S. His Moscow recital in December 2011 was named as major piano
recital of the year by “ Literaturnaia Gazeta,” one of the main Moscow newspapers, and he
also received warm reviews by the New York Times and the Oxford Times (U.K.).
Dian Lawler-Johnson attended the MTNA 2012 national conference with her private
student, who advanced to the pre-college finals in the Young Artist Competition. She also
participated in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Conference in Orlando as Southeastern Liaison to the NATS Foundation Board. She was recently appointed
as Georgia NATS District Governor for 2012-2014.
Ms. Lawler-Johnson prepared students entering the Georgia NATS Auditions, Georgia
Metropolitan Opera Auditions, and the Georgia NATS Artist Awards competition (NATSAA), which she assisted in hosting at the Schwob School of Music this year. Recent
accomplishments of her students include Georgia and Southern District MTNA Senior
Voice awards, Georgia NATS Auditions, Bel Canto Opera (Italy), Si parla, si canta (Italy),
and the Harrower Opera Workshop (Atlanta)
faculty accomplishments
Dr. Matthew McCabe designed and taught a new course entitled “Web Design for Musicians”
at CSU and then travelled to Valdosta to teach at the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program, a
4-week residential summer program for gifted high school students; he will return next summer as the department chair for Digital Media Studies at GHP. In early May, his latest publication, in collaboration with the Cognition and Language Lab at the University of Florida,
entitled “Concurrent Word Generation and Motor Performance: Further Evidence for Language-Motor Interaction” appeared in the journal PLoS ONE. He also performed with Atlantabased blues guitarist Marshall Ruffin, served as technical director for the International Trumpet
Guild conference at CSU, and engaged in recording sessions, composition, and technical consulting.
Dr. Lisa Oberlander performed Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs with the CSU Wind Ensemble at the 2012 Georgia Music Educators Association conference in Savannah. Her students
won first and second place in the GMTA Young Artist Woodwind Competition Division. Her
student, Ford Fourqurean, attended both the Sewanee Summer Music Festival (Sewanee, TN)
and the Music Seminar in Kitakaruizawa (Japan) 2012, run by the acclaimed clarinetist Charles
Neidich.
Dr. Sean Powell, Assistant Professor of Music Education presented 3 research papers at the
Music Educators National Conference in St. Louis, and presented a research paper at the ISME
30th World Conference on Music Education in Thessaloniki, Greece. He has been elected Facilitator of the Program Admission, Assessment, and Alignment ASPA of the Society for Music
Teacher Education
Dr. Brad Palmer, trombone professor, performed at the International Trombone Festival in
Paris and with the American Trombone Choir in Belgium, Germany, and France. He was a faculty Artist at the SliderAsia trombone festival in Hong Kong. He was featured soloists in Frank
Martin’s “Ballade” with the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra and in John Mackey’s “Harvest”
Trombone Concerto with the CSU Wind Ensemble and Millikin University’s Wind Ensemble at
the Illinois Music Educators Conference.
In 2012, Dr. Elizabeth Parker presented her research in Vancouver, B.C at the American Educational Research Association, and in Thessaloniki, Greece at the International Society of Music
Education. Forthcoming publications include a qualitative study of the work of James Mursell
in Visions of Research in Music Education and a mixed-methods study of undergraduate musicianship in Research Studies in Music Education.
Andrew Poor served as a brass instructor for the Phantom Regiment drum and bugle corps
during the summer of 2012. The corps placed third at the Drum Corps International World
Championships recently in Indianapolis, Indiana. His composition, When Words Are Not
Enough, was recently published by Northeastern Music Publications. He recently received a
commission for a composition for young band from the Wrens Middle School band in Jefferson, Georgia. This fall, he serves as staff arranger for the University of Tennessee-Martin
Skyhawk Marching for the 2012 football season, as a member of the GMEA Adjudication committee, and as coordinator for the 2013 All-state bands. He served as a facilitator at the 2012
National Brass Symposium this past June.
Sergiu Schwartz, The William B. and Sue Marie Turner Distinguished Faculty Chair in Music, returned to the Bowdoin International Music Festival (Maine), where, as artist faculty in residence,
he conducted master classes and performed in concerts. The Portland Press Herald wrote following
one of Prof. Schwartz’s performances in the festival: “Masterful Show ...This week’s Monday Sonatas
concert of the Bowdoin International Music Festival, at Studzinski Hall, was sold out…It is seldom
that one attends a concert with such a sustained high level of musicianship, beginning with an exciting Mendelssohn Violin Sonata in F Major, as played by Sergiu Schwartz, violin, and Peter Basquin,
piano.”
Prof. Schwartz’s teaching assistant Boris Abramov appeared in numerous solo and chamber music
concerts with Bowdoin faculty and fellow students and served as one of the principals of the Bowdoin Festival Orchestra. His chamber group substituted at short notice for the world-famous Ying
String Quartet in a live appearance on Maine Public Broadcasting. Boris was also chosen by the
festival to perform the world premiere of a new violin work by American composer Derek Bermel.
Prof. Schwartz also performed at Summit International Music Festival (New York), Hunter College
in New York, and Smith College in Massachusetts and conducted master classes at Cleveland Institute of Music and at Lausanne-Sion Academy of Music (Switzerland).
Dr. Susan Tomkiewicz presented a lecture on TMJ among musicians at the International Double
Reed Society Conference in Oxford, OH. Dr. Ron Wirt also attended with his student Bogdan
Dumitriu, who received Honorable Mention in the Fox-Gillet International Competition.
Paul Vaillancourt, at the International Trumpet Guild, performed with international artists
throughout the conference. He has produced a recording with the Continental Trombone Quartet.
The CSU Percussion Ensemble CD, entitled Shifting Cells, was released on Albany Records this past
October and featured new works written for the ensemble. Paul toured as part of the piano/percussion duo, Strike with pianist Jeff Meyer all over the U.S., promoting the group’s first CD, Convergence. He also composed drum scores for the world and North American champions, New York
Metro Pipe Band.
Yien Wang was the official collaborative artist at the 2012 International Trumpet Guild Conference, the 2012 Southeast Trombone Symposium, the 7th Annual English Horn Master Classes with
Carolyn Hove, the 2012 Summerflute, and the 2012 MTNA Southern Division Competition. She
was the collaborative artist and piano coordinator at the 2012 International Saxophone Symposium
and Competition. She was also a jury member at the GMTA auditions. She performed and taught
with Trio Carrizo colleagues Dr. Susan Tomkiewicz and Dr. Ron Wirt at Baylor University and Texas
State University this fall. She served as a jury member at both 2012 MTNA Piano Competitions at
Auburn University in Alabama and Young Harris College in Georgia. She will be the official collaborative artist at the 2013 International Trombone Festival and the 8th Annual English Horn Master
Classes with Carolyn Hove.
Dr. Andrew Zohn released his new Duo Spiritoso CD, “Duo Spiritoso Plays Granados,” on Clear
Note Productions. He completed a multiple-concert summer tour of Italy, France, and the Netherlands.

faculty of CSU’s Department of Music.
She’s performed as a piano soloist with
the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, Atlanta
Symphony Orchestra, Marietta Symphony,
Columbus Symphony and Columbus
College Symphony Orchestra.
Long-time CSU benefactors Henry and Joyce Schwob
received honorary doctorates at the 2012 spring commencement held in the Columbus Civic Center.
The Schwob family’s support of Columbus State has been
strong for decades. Family members were among prominent
Columbus businessmen and educators who led the push to
establish a junior college in Columbus in the 1950s. Henry
Schwob was among the charter members of the Columbus
College Foundation’s Board of Trustees in 1964. Because of
generous donations over the years, CSU’s Schwob Memorial Library and the Schwob School of Music bear the family
name.
“Without a doubt, the support of Henry and Joyce Schwob
has been one of the most important factors in establishing
the reputation of Columbus State University as a center of
excellence in music and the arts,” said Rex Whiddon, Columbus State’s Director of Principal Gifts and University
Stewardship.
He’s served on the boards of First National
Bank, First Union Bank, Wachovia Bank,
Wells Fargo, Burnham Services Corp., the
Medical Center, Columbus Museum and
Temple Israel. An avid collector of American
art, he now serves on the board of Atlanta’s
High Museum and the Anti-Defamation
League National Board. He’s president of
Schwob Realty and the Schwob Family
Foundation.
A Philadelphia native, Joyce Harrison
Schwob was a scholarship student at the
University of Pennsylvania before earning
bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music
from Auburn University.
Under her leadership as president of the
board for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, its musicians moved to paid, professional
status. She also chaired an international
search that resulted in the hiring of George
del Gobbo as the orchestra’s music director
and conductor.
An accomplished pianist, Joyce Schwob
served for several years on the piano faculty
of CSU’s Department of Music. She’s performed as a piano soloist with the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra, Marietta Symphony, Columbus
Symphony and Columbus College Symphony Orchestra.
She’s served on the boards of the National
American Symphony Orchestra League,
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Jewish Family
and Career Services, William Bremen Museum, The Temple and Greater Atlanta Jewish
Federation. She was awarded the federation’s
Woman of Achievement Award in 2001 for
co-chairing “Music with a Mission.”

Thank you...
I am a graduate assistant in the piano
studio in Schwob Music School. I am
from Taiwan and studied before four
years in Paris and five years in Germany.
With your support I am able to pursue
my dream studying further with Professor Kobrin. I know I will make you proud
and you will always be a part of anything I
accomplish. Thank you for making a difference in my life in Columbus.
Thank you and best regards,
Tzu-yi Chen, piano
I truly believe the greatest gift one can
receive is the opportunity to succeed and
shape their future. Your charitable gift
has done that for me, and I will forever be
grateful. I know I will make you proud
and you will always be a part of anything I
accomplish.
Sincerely,
Maya Killingsworth, viola
Thank you very much for your continuous
support of CSU and the Schwob School of
Music as Patrons of Music. Your generous
gift is supporting my dreams. I know I
will make the both of you very proud, and
I will always keep you in my thoughts a
major contribution to my success. Thank
you so much!
Musically yours,
Cristian A. Cantu, horn
My name is Courtney Alley and I am a
freshman here at Columbus. I am a Music
Education Major who plays the french
horn. I really appreciate all your generosity.
It has helped so much to help me become a
music educator. I can now focus more on
my studies instead of worrying over money.
For that I greatly appreciate all you do
for the music students here at Columbus.
Music so important to so many people. The
fact that you acknowledge that and contribute says a lot. Thank you again. I hope that
you have a splendid year.
Courtney Alley, horn

numerous students achieve their dreams.
Thank you! I am currently enrolled at CSU
as a saxophone performance major. Upon
graduation, I hope to be accepted into the
graduate program at Indiana University
where I will continue my performance
studies. With your support I can focus on
my studies and work harder to ensure my
academic success. Thank you for making a
difference in my life here at CSU.
Thank you,
Erik Wright, saxophone
Without your generosity, I would have
never had the opportunity to attend this
truly amazing university. Thank you for
your dedication to music and the arts.
Sincerely,
