Dear Students:
The course catalog is designed to assist you
in planning your course selections for the
2016-17 school year. Please plan and select
your course requests carefully. I encourage
you to consider your future goals and needs
as you select your course requests. Select
courses that will challenge you to work hard
and that will engage you in the curriculum.
• Review required classes,
•
Review the graduation requirements
to assure you are progressing in
meeting the requirements,
•
Select courses that support your
future educational and career goals,
•
Utilize parents, teachers and
counselors as resources in making
your decisions.
Course availability will be based on number
of requests. It is very important to list
alternate course selections so that your
choices can be met.
Best Wishes,
Erik Jespersen,
Principal

sure you have chosen the prerequisite FIRST before you choose a class requiring a prerequisite. For example, if you would
like to take “Art I” you must first choose “Basic Art Design” or “Intro to Digital Media.” Any elective choice you make where you
have not yet met the prerequisite WILL NOT be listed in your elective choices.

Note: To compete in Division 1, students enrolling on or after August
1, 2016 must earn a minimum 2.300 GPA in 16 core courses, 10 of which
must be completed before the start of the seventh semester (seven of
those 10 courses will become locked in for purposes of GPA calculation),
and must earn a combined SAT and ACT score that matches your corecourse GPA on the sliding scale above. The required 10 core courses prior
to the start of the seventh semester and the “locked in” courses do not
apply to academic redshirts (GPA between 2.000–2.299).
McNARY HIGH SCHOOL
Advanced Courses
McNary offers a variety of advanced and college level
programs. These courses move at a faster pace with
more rigorous and in-depth content coverage. As
entrance into college and the world of work becomes
more competitive, these courses prepare students to
meet these challenges. Applicants will be evaluated on
an individual basis; space available in courses is also a
consideration.
Advanced Academic Programs
Honors – These courses are designed to cover material
at a deeper level and may move at a faster rate covering
more material. They are listed as “honors” on the
student’s transcript.
Advanced Placement – These classes follow a
prescribed course of study designed by the College
Board. Students may receive college credit depending
on how well they perform on the A.P. examination, a
national standardized test given in May of each school
year. Generally, a student must earn at least a 3 or above
on the test to get credit. Each college has its own policy
toward the A.P. tests and the college’s admissions office
or catalog should be consulted. Cost for each test is
approximately $90.00. The designation of A.P. is placed on
the student’s transcript.
AP Courses offered – AP English Lit/Comp,
AP Lang/Comp, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB,
AP US History, AP European History, AP computer
Science, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Music Theory,
AP Physics C-Mechanics, AP Art History, AP Government
& Politics, AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science.
Dual Credit classes cover the course syllabi, use the
texts, and are taught by teachers who meet the criteria
approved by Chemeketa Community College (CCC)
and Linn-Benton Community College. These credits are
permanent college credits even though students don’t
attend class on the college campus. (McNary classes that
offer college credit are noted in the registration booklet.)
McNARY HIGH SCHOOL
9th Grade Honors Placement
Guidelines
Ninth grade students are selected based on their
achievement tests, grades, and teacher recommendations
from the middle schools. In addition, students applying for
Honors English must meet the 8th grade benchmark for
reading on the state test given in the spring to 8th graders
and submit an application for admission into any one or
more of the three honors classes: Honors English, Honors
Physical Science, and Honors 20th Century US History I.
Students are placed into appropriate math levels by
teacher recommendations and prerequisite classes.
For grades 10 through 12, entrance into advanced classes
is based on grades in previous high school courses,
prerequisite classes, and teacher recommendation. To
remain in an advanced course, students should achieve a
grade of a “C” or higher, depending on the course. Many
courses require a “B” or higher.
Special Programs
Special Education
McNary offers programs for students who qualify and
who are in need of additional assistance to succeed in
learning. The Developmental Learning Center
(DLC), the Emotional Resource Center (ERC), and
the Emotional Growth Center (EGC) assist students
who have certified learning disabilities. Services for
students with hearing, speech or language disabilities are
also provided.
Alternative Education
Salem-Keizer On-line: SKO is a computer based
program that students may enroll in through their
counselor. Students must be able to work independently
and be on grade level for reading. Students may take SKO
for credit recovery or credit acceleration. They may elect
to take the class at home, or here at school during a
designated class period in their schedule.

Vision: Our vision is that all students will have the opportunity to explore careers and prepare for life after high school. Do you like working with your hands, enjoy being part of a team, like to solve complex problems and appreciate seeing your hard work turn into a physical “thing” you can look at and touch? Career & Technical Education programs can help you discover your interests, strengths and talents, while helping you prepare for employment in high-‐wage jobs or a positive transition to post-‐secondary education and college. At CTEC, students learn technical skills while developing professional skills like a positive work ethic, punctuality and personal responsibility. They apply core curriculum content like math, English and science in industry-‐focused environments and situations. They develop professional partnerships with local and regional industry leaders. They use their new knowledge and experiences to develop a post-‐high school plan that can includes entry into the work force, college admission or both. Students also earn high school English credit and either math or science credit while at CTEC. Programs Available: Commercial Manufacturing: Students will develop an understanding of the manufacturing field and learn to operate machinery that makes parts and products used by consumers and businesses. Skill development will include: technical mathematics and English, precision measurement, personal safety, problem solving, understanding and use of manufacturing technology and the manufacturing process, and soft skills such as interpersonal communication, teamwork, initiative and personal responsibility. Residential Construction: Students will have exposure to authentic projects, timelines and tradecraft related to residential construction. Areas of focus will include: excavation, foundations, concrete, floor, wall, and roof framing, hand tool use and safety, technical math and English, as well as computer assisted drafting. All students enrolled in the residential construction program will have the opportunity to participate in building a house. 3D Design for Game & Television Production: Students will learn technical and professional skills consistently expected within the media productions industry. The program will provide innovative curriculum, instruction, facilities, and equipment for students to learn advanced aspects of multimedia and live TV production, animation, 2D & 3D design, 2D & 3D game development, and the use of industry tools including video production equipment, 3D software, media mixers, slow motion replay, long-‐distance learning, etc. Cosmetology: Students will learn technical and professional skills consistently expected within the Cosmetology and barbering industries. The program will provide curriculum, instruction, and practice to assist students in meeting the COMPETENCY requirements to be licensed by the Oregon State Licensing Board of Cosmetology. In collaboration with staff, students will plan and select which licenses to pursue and students can take their academic record to other Private Cosmetology Schools to continue their studies. Who is Eligible? Any Salem-‐Keizer student, academically on track to begin the 2016 – 17 school year as a junior (12+ credits) or as a senior (18+ credits), may submit an application for admission to CTEC. All programs of study are open to both male and female students. Applications may be picked up from any District high school CTE teacher or any high school counselor. Dropping Courses
There is a three-week period from the first regular school
day of the semester for students to drop/add a class(es).
After the cut-off date, dropping a class will result in a
failing grade (even if passing) for the semester.
1.1 Students may drop and/or add classes prior to
the cut-off date by securing a Schedule Change
Request form from the Counseling Office.
1.2 A request does not guarantee a schedule
change. Factors such as class size, availability of
classes, and/or appropriate placement supersede
the request.
1.3 Students are allowed a three-week grace period
at the beginning of each semester to make
necessary schedule changes without grade
penalty.
2.0 Consequences of Dropping Classes After the CutOff Date.
2.1 Students who request to drop a class after the
three-week grace period will receive a failing
grade.
2.2 The grade of “F” will be placed on the transcript
at the end of the semester and will be averaged
into the student’s grade point average.
2.3 The final semester grade slip will list the class
and indicate the failing grade.
3.0 Procedure for Dropping a Class After the Cut-Off
Date.
3.1 Students will make an appointment with their
counselor to request the drop.
3.2 Counselors will fill out the NCR Late Schedule
Change form. The NCR form includes the
schedule change policy on the reverse side.
3.3 The Late Schedule Change form requires
signatures of the parent, teacher, administrator
and counselor. When these signatures are
secured, the form is returned to the counselor.
(Administrator signature required if request to
drop after 3rd week without F penalty.)
3.4 The student’s schedule is changed when all
parties approve the change.
**Parent signature is required after the third week of the
semester for class (es) dropped. Students dropping a class
after the third week of a semester will be given an “F” for
that class. This “F” will be recorded as a permanent grade.
