left. Some, like Joe Piswater, work « under the table »

SILENT WEDDING
EAST OF ME
Romania, 1953. In a small village, a young couple is about
to get married. Guests arrive, the banquet is ready and
everything is prepared for the ceremony. Unexpectedly,
the Russian army shows up. Stalin is dead, a national
mourning is declared, they have one hour to break up. They
finally decide to celebrate anyway against all expectations
and to make it silent…
This is a modern-day tale of a young woman who sets out by
train across the former Eastern Bloc towards Moscow. It is a
city that haunts her and without it, she would never have left her
country, back when there were still tanks and when freedom was
elsewhere – in the West. In the early 1980s, Marta left Prague
for Paris. It was the age of the Palace nightclub and drugs, a
time when it was OK to do a little stripping or a few favours,
for cash to make ends meet. In the new East, everybody talks
about people leaving, especially the girls. But Marta isn’t here
anymore. Those who left before have no place in this new East.

LA INFLUENCIA
Anna Hallgrimsdottir lives in Reykjavik with her two sons. Fed
up with the coldness of Iceland, she decides to sell her business
to be able to move out of the country. Her business, selling dope,
is prosperous, she wants a good price out of it... the dealer
whom she’ll hand it over to (as well as her mobile : that’s how
her customers reach her and order the amount they need) tells
her he’ll have the money within 48 hours. Meanwhile, Anna gets
involved in all kinds of «Icelandic familial adventures» and her
kitchen fills up with customers/friends, partying, while waiting
for her to come back to sell them their daily grass.
A story of a disoriented and vulnerable woman, overburdened with
life’s daily problems and more: her belongings are impounded, her
cosmetics shop has been closed down and her children’s future
is unknown. The children’s vitality draws a sharp contrast against
the apathy shown by their mother, who plunges slowly into a
depression. The kids, becoming aware that she lacks the necessary
strength and maturity to effectively face these problems, are
forced to adopt adult attitudes. Life goes on, and things change.
Sometimes changes are slow and unnoticeable, sometimes they
are sharp and tangible, and everything is transformed, always.
