From the President’s Pen...................2
I vividly remember the tears in my
grandfather’s eyes as he stood in his
driveway and took one last look at the
home he was preparing to leave. With
the encouragement of their children,
my grandparents had agreed to move to a retirement center in Goshen,
Indiana where they could receive the care they both badly needed at
that time in their lives. It was the responsibility of my parents to drive
them to their new home and I will not forget my sense of sadness as I
watched their car back out of the driveway to begin the five hour
journey to Indiana.
More than a decade later the phone rang in my office where I was
immersed in my new responsibilities as President and CEO of Scheurer
Hospital. It was an old college friend who in the course of our
conversation asked if the hospital had ever considered providing elder
care services in this small rural community.
That conversation led to an astonishing series of events that resulted
in the creation of the independent living facility we know as Country
Bay Village. After months of planning and preparation, ground was
broken in the summer of 1993 and in May of 1994 the first residents
began moving into the sparkling new facility. Since that time nearly
250 residents have made Country Bay Village their home.
Our commitment to elder care services expanded in April of 2003 when
the doors were opened to Country Gardens, our Assisted Living Facility.
Then in 2005 a spacious new Long Term Care wing was added to the
hospital which replaced the outdated nursing home unit that had been
constructed in 1971. Between those three facilities we now have 100
apartments available to serve the needs of seniors who are such an
important part of our community.

In May of this year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Country Bay
Village but in a sense it is a larger celebration. We can now celebrate
the reality that so many of our loved ones can receive the care they
need in the community they’ve known as home all of their lives. It’s a
reality worthy of celebration.

Jodi Williamson joined the Scheurer Healthcare Network team on November
30, 2007. She came with 20 years experience working in Human Resources
and is our Payroll & Benefits Coordinator. She is in charge of making sure
employees are paid accurately. Jodi works closely with the staff and
administration to prepare payroll, direct payroll deductions to proper
channels, supervise medical leave documentation and coordinate employer
benefits.
She maintains her caring smile as she multitasks throughout the day. Jodi
enjoys the diversity of her job from keeping employee records accurate to
monitoring IRS regulations. She adds, “I look forward to meeting employees
and being able to put faces to names. I’m here to help them understand the
payroll policies, their benefits or help with other HR concerns they have.”
Her supervisor, Greg Foy, adds, “Jodi has strong communication skills to
answer questions regarding payroll, employee benefits and address other
issues that employees may have. She is organized, professional and a good
problem solver.”
Jodi Williamson
Jodi is a true Sebewaing gal! She was born and raised there, graduated
college, then returned to marry and raise her family there. She and her
husband Jeff will celebrate their 29th anniversary in May. They have 2 daughters, Jillian and Jennifer, who are both in
college, and son Isaiah is in the 8th grade.
Jodi prefers a simple life, spending time with family and friends, reading, walking with Jeff and going to Isaiah’s
basketball and baseball games. Her sweet tooth enjoys flavored tootsie rolls and brownies. Her dream vacations one day
include Hawaii and a Caribbean Cruise (or anyplace warm). Jodi has been active in her church and especially faithful to
the Preschool Sunday School program for 35 years.
Thank you, Jodi, for being a shining employee. Scheurer Healthcare Network is proud to have you on
our team!
Medical Minute - Preventative Medicine
Preventative medicine seems to be the latest buzzword in healthcare these
days. However, it is very important when it comes to looking forward in your life
and planning the future. Ultimately, none of us want to get older and not live a
productive, healthy life. The concept of preventative medicine encompasses the
tenets of this ideal so that we can indeed be productive and happy well into our
80s, 90s and beyond. Insurance companies have embraced the idea of
preventative medicine for their constituents because it is good medicine. This
approach to healthcare works toward identifying and preventing serious medical
problems. The preventative approach identifies and controls risk factors for
diseases before they can contribute to disease progression, such as controlling
blood glucose levels in diabetes or lipid levels in heart disease. Everyone needs
to be proactive and patient centered in their approach to their own health and
find out what preventive tests are necessary at their age to help them reach
their ultimate health goals of living a long, productive and healthy life.

Problems with Persistent Swelling?
Initially, you may notice swelling in your hand or foot. A ring may seem tighter or shoes may fit more
snugly. You may sense a feeling of heaviness, stiffness and pain. In severe cases you may notice
thickening of skin, hardening of the limb, leakage of lymph and massive swelling. Do not
ignore even the slightest amount of swelling – seek medical attention.
Unusual or persistent swelling in an extremity should always be evaluated
by a physician.
Why does this happen?
All of us produce proteins in the tissues of our bodies. Usually these proteins,
along with excess cells and water are carried away by our circulatory or
lymphatic systems. If these systems are damaged, the proteins, cells and
water begin accumulating in the body’s soft tissue, which results in swelling
of a body part. The swelling is called lymphedema and most often affects
the extremities and abdomen.
Although lymphedema is a chronic condition, with proper care and treatment,
it can be managed.
Treatment for lymphedema
At Scheurer Hospital, we use a treatment called Complete Decongestive
Therapy, or CDT. This is a non-invasive treatment program to help patients
manage lymphedema.

Scheurer Hospital Offers Swing Bed Care
When patients reach the point in their recovery that
acute care is no longer necessary, but they are not
ready to leave the hospital, they can be evaluated to
see if they qualify for the Swing Bed Care program.
The Swing Bed Care program at Scheurer Hospital
can provide that skilled, follow-up care that is
necessary for some patients to reach their optimal
recovery. Even if the original hospitalization
occurred elsewhere, patients may still qualify for the
Swing Bed Care program at Scheurer Hospital.
During their stay, patients receive daily skilled
services, along with activities and education
designed to meet their unique needs.
The length of a patient’s stay depends on their
progress. Medicare covers 100% of the first 20 days,
and 80% of days 21 through 100. Most private
insurance includes benefits for skilled care.

Some of the services qualifying for Swing
Bed Care include:

• Occupational Therapy
• Respiratory Therapy
• Recreational Therapy
• Medical Nutrition Therapy
• Wound Care
• IV Therapy

Scheurer Selected for Trauma Simulation Training
The staff at Scheurer Hospital were one of four hospitals
in the state of Michigan to be selected to take part in a
trauma simulation with the Michigan State University
Learning and Assessment Center. This fantastic program
enabled doctors and nurses, along with staff from the
Lab, Diagnostic Imaging, Respiratory Therapy and
Registration and many others to work together. The
simulation was an excellent opportunity for the hospital
to practice and learn how

event. After he was stabilized at Scheurer, he was flown
to another hospital for further treatment. He states that
he is doing well now thanks to Scheurer’s team catching
the problem right away, making the right decisions at the
right time and providing the actor with the appropriate
medications. We are all grateful for a positive outcome!

to communicate effectively in a very fast-paced, stressful
trauma, without all of the pressure of having a real
person’s life on the line.
The trauma situation involved mannequins and one live,
medically trained actor. The mannequins allowed the staff
to perform invasive procedures, such as inserting chest
tubes and stabilizing leg fractures. The real actor allowed
the simulation to feel more like the real thing. Staff were
able to interact with the actor in much the same way
that they would a real patient.
As it turns out, while the doctors, nurses and therapists
were performing non-invasive procedures on the actor,
they discovered that he truly had a life-threatening

Scheurer Fit Challenge
Scheurer Fit Challenge is a new program that began in February to help 60
contestants lose weight, increase their physical activity and live a healthier lifestyle.
Working in teams of six, participants monitor their food intake and physical activity
daily and earn points for doing so. Points can also be earned for things like
attending educational seminars, taking part in fitness classes and keeping
appointments with the Registered Dietitian and Fitness Coach.
Scheurer Healthcare Network’s very own employee Carleen Giddings has agreed to
share her journey as a Scheurer Fit Challenge participant.
Carleen decided to she want to join Scheurer Fit Challenge to work with fellow
teammates to lose weight and stay fit. She not only hopes to lose 20 pounds and keep
it off, but ensure that her clothes are fitting “comfy.”
For Carleen, the most important benefit of joining the program and being a part of a
team is the support from your teammates. Together you can discuss food, exercise and
share each other’s enthusiasm. She also states, “Each person is rewarded with points
based on workout minutes and not their ability.”
One obstacle Carleen didn’t expect to face in this program thus far was following a
healthy food plan which includes carbohydrates counting. Though one of Carleen’s
toughest obstacles, she has stuck with this food plan and can definitely see the plan’s
benefits already. “It seems like following the carb eating plan helps me feel less hungry.”

Just four weeks into the program, Carleen’s hard work, including pre-planning of menus and

Despite the occasional challenges, Carleen’s personal mantra keeps her going. “Be happy, healthy and fit,” says Giddings.
“I have the discipline to define myself, no matter how long it takes.”

Patient Centered Medical Home
Scheurer Hospital is working diligently to ensure our patients receive the quality care they've come to expect.
As such our clinics are in the process of becoming Patient Centered Medical Homes (PCMH). A PCMH is a trusting
partnership between a doctor led healthcare team and an informed patient. The ultimate goal is to help patients
reach their health goals of living longer, productive and healthy lives. The process includes an agreement between
the doctor and the patient that acknowledges the role of each in a total healthcare program.
The health team will:
• Ask you what your goals are, or what you want to do to improve your health.
• Remind you when tests are due so that you can receive the best quality care.
• Ask you to have blood tests done before your visit so that the doctor has results at your visit.
• Explore methods to care for you better, including ways to help you care for yourself.
The patient will help by:
• Tell us about your needs and concerns.
• Take part in planning your care and following through with it.
• Tell us what medications you are taking and ask for a refill at your office visit when needed.
• Let us know when you see other doctors and what medications they put you on or change.
• Learn about your insurance so that you know what it covers.
