Welcome to the first 2000 days:
Your guide to resources in Strathcona County
There are 2000 days between the time your baby is born and when he/
she heads off to kindergarten. Experiences during these 2000 days have
a lasting impact on later learning, health and success. Children's first
experiences determine how their brains are wired, lay the groundwork
for future health, and form the foundation of the social and emotional
skills needed for academic and workplace success.
We know that children need environments that are nurturing,
stimulating, safe and consistent to support healthy development.
Parents and caregivers play a big role and can do many things to
stimulate development.
Families also require supportive environments in order to be able to
meet children’s development needs. Multiple spheres of influence
affect a child’s development, including caregivers outside the family, the
neighbourhood environment, resources in the community, cultural and
religious affiliations, and the attitudes, policies and resources provided
by wider society.
This directory provides parents, families and caregivers information on
the various programs, services and activities available in Strathcona
County to support children and families. Information is available on a
wide range of topics such as social and recreational activities, program
subsidies, health services, child care options and looking after yourself
as an adult in a child’s life.
Every child in Strathcona County is able to have the best start that they
need by being developmentally ready for Kindergarten.

• Agencies have a network of approved child care homes in various
locations throughout Strathcona County
Regulated Child Care vs. unlicensed Child Care:
Do you know the Difference?
Approved Family Day Homes are
private residences where children are
cared for by a qualified person living
in the home. Similar to licensed day
cares, these approved family day
homes are monitored on a regular
basis to ensure they meet provincial
regulations. Some homes are
accredited and exceed the minimum
Provincial standards for care.
Unlicensed Child Care is often done
by people who offer child care out of
their homes. These homes have not
been approved to operate under the
provincial family day home category
but often identify themselves as
family day homes. Note that these
homes ARE NOT monitored by a
provincial agency for the safety and
well-being of children. Under the
Child Care Licensing Act, unlicensed
caregivers can care no more than
six children, not including their
own, at any given time; exceeding
this limit is illegal and may result in
a fine of no more than 10,000 or in
imprisonment for a period of no more
than 12 months or both a fine and
imprisonment.
