A REVIEW OF LITTLE VICTORIES Annual Report 2014 HOW DO WE DEFINE A LITTLE VICTORY? OUR MISSION Together raising funds and distributing grants throughout British Columbia to inspire hope, enrich lives and build a better future for children who have special needs. Little victories happen everyday in the lives of children who have special needs. These are the moments when triumph overshadows challenge. We may take them for granted but each is an epic achievement for these kids and is worthy of celebration and recognition. In 2014, we contributed to many little victories and are inspired to help create many more. VARIETY - THE CHILDREN’S CHARITY / ANNUAL REPORT 2014 02 / 03 REPORT FROM OUR PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FORWARD THINKING STRONGER TEAMS NEW AUDIENCES Over the past year, Variety’s members, supporters and staff continued the collective call to evolve our organization. We made important progress enhancing our relationships with supporters, introducing Variety to new donors and increasing recognition of our impact. These initiatives are pursued with one key outcome in mind: to help more children who have special needs and their families. The need continues. Parents with children who have special needs are overwhelmed by the cost of care, the pressures of providing for their families and the demands of parenting. They come to Variety for help. BILL SENGHERA PRESIDENT LITTLE VICTORIES BERNICE SCHOLTEN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR In 2014 we funded 1461 individual grants and 36 organizations across B.C. We also continued Variety’s tradition of endorsing innovative projects including a major $1 million grant for the development of the state-of-the-art, province-wide Pacific Autism Family Centre. Looking forward to 2015, we will continue to build a more prominent position throughout B.C., supporting even more children, families and organizations. Our work is possible because of the passion, integrity and dedicated support year round of our Board of Directors, members, staff, donors and volunteers. Together, we are committed to making an important difference in the lives of children who have special needs. VARIETY - THE CHILDREN’S CHARITY / ANNUAL REPORT 2014 04 / 05 WE DARED TO INNOVATE AND DISCOVERED NEW WAYS TO SHARE OUR LITTLE VICTORIES Articulating Variety’s brand was a key strategic imperative that came to fruition in 2014 with the launch of the Little Victories brand campaign. The concept was developed with the involvement of Variety Board, staff, members, volunteers and donors as well as the support of award-winning agency Rethink Communications. “Little Victories” as the campaign is coined, celebrates the courage and perseverance of children who have special needs in overcoming challenges. Whether it’s a first step with the aid of a walker or first sentence with the support of speech and language therapy, we celebrate each and every little victory. That’s why we challenged ourselves to come up with new ways to raise money in 2014. We introduced an exciting new fundraising event to help Variety engage support from new donors - The Variety Car Rally for Kids with Special Needs. This exciting two-day experience introduced new supporters and celebrities to the cause as it took over the streets of the Lower Mainland while raising valuable funds for Variety. VARIETY - THE CHILDREN’S CHARITY / ANNUAL REPORT 2014 08 / 09 WE STRENGTHENED OUR TEAMWORK Variety has deep roots in B.C. and, over the years, has cultivated an important group of long-standing supporters who give through donations and volunteering hours that contribute immensely to the work we do in the province. In 2014 we recognized the importance of evolving our donor base and critical work was done to develop a data-driven approach to further cultivating these relationships. By focusing more attention on our existing support we will create more little victories through stronger teamwork. Events like the Golden Heart Award Gala succeed with teamwork. Members, staff and volunteers all contribute with wonderful results. THIS IS BREN WITH MEDIC ATION CAN R DAN - AGE 6 UN & PLAY W ITH FRIENDS WE BELIEVE TEAMWORK IS THE BEST WAY TO GET THINGS DONE. In 2014, the Heart of Variety Fund increased the number of grants provided for individual families and organizations reaching communities from Victoria to Fort St. John. Variety has three funding priorities to help ensure that children in B.C. are supported in achieving their unique little victories. Variety Cares We save lives with funding for medical equipment and medication as well as expenses associated with emergency hospital visits. Variety Freedom We change lives by funding costly mobility equipment, hearing devices, van conversions, residential upgrades and specialized therapies. He absolutely loves his new ears (hearing aids). He calls them his beautiful ears. In April 2014 we had to move and when we moved our rent had doubled and we had new bills that we never had before, we were really not sure how we were going to afford to purchase hearing aids for Travis. This has been a real blessing to us to have your help to purchase this equipment for Travis for kindergarten. He is doing really well in his first couple of weeks of kindergarten. From the bottom of our hearts thank you so very much for helping us get the hearing equipment Travis really needed. Sincerely, Lisa and Michael We helped Travis with specialized hearing devices which he wears proudly both in and out of the classroom.
