2015 Annual Report Dear friends of Friends, Friends of the Children is an organization that breaks the cycle of generational Dear friends of Friends, It has been an extraordinary year at Friends of the Children! I am honored and humbled to have spent this year as the Executive Director, which has only deepened my passion for the work we do and the incredible kids we serve. The strong, enduring relationships that our youth form with their Friends are what give them the opportunity to realize their tremendous potential. It wasn’t until I stepped into this new role that I began to fully grasp what we mean when we talk about kids facing the highest risks. I had heard the individual stories of our youth who experience homelessness, food insecurity, or drug activity in their homes. With this new line of sight, I’m beginning to understand the extent to which our youth live these realities every day. As I become more familiar with the trauma our youth face, I continue to grow in amazement at their resilience. poverty through salaried, professional mentoring. We select the children facing the highest risks and commit to working with those children from kindergarten through graduation. This year we launched our Core Assets initiative, which takes the incredible work that we have done throughout our history and aligns it with the latest research and innovation around social and emotional learning. We are now seeing Friends, volunteers, and youth talking in their day to day work about grit, self-determination, problem solving, and belonging. One of the creative ways our Friends help youth find a sense of belonging is through engagement with community partners like Vital Life, a Marquis and Consonus Foundation. From science lessons with Consonus pharmacists to service learning at Marquis senior care facilities, Vital Life provides incredible opportunities for our youth to learn professional skills and become part of a multi-generational community. Cover and Inside Cover Photos: ©Matthew Sorenson In November, I experienced one of the true highlights of my professional career when we opened our new Rockwood facility. This building represents the culmination of so much hard work from our volunteers who served on the planning and fundraising committees, our Friends who provided insights into what would make the perfect building, and our kids who really helped us shape the vision. We are incredibly grateful for the many generous supporters who gave above and beyond our expectations to make this dream a reality. 2 This remarkable year wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our amazing donors, staff, and volunteers. I’d like to particularly thank our new favorite volunteer, #8 Portland Trail Blazer, Al-Farouq Aminu, who has visited our youth twice and bought over 200 Thanksgiving baskets for our families with his teammate, Maurice Harkless. The children in our program inspire and surprise us every day with their remarkable ability to persevere and work toward bright futures. Thank you for being a part of their success. MEGAN LEWIS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 3 Selecting youth in kindergarten, the first step in creating real change. Our youth face the highest risks If a classroom of 30 students were made up entirely of youth from our program, the youth’s experiences would look like the following: 28 out of 30 live in poverty During the spring of each school year, Friends spend six weeks observing kindergarten classrooms to select new youth for our program. Friends coordinate with teachers and school staff at our three partner schools to identify youth who show signs of significant life challenges. Not only do Friends look at classroom behavior and academic performance, but they also pay attention to youth who come to school late or infrequently, go hungry, seem sleep-deprived, wear unwashed clothes, or act withdrawn and isolated. These are all signs that a youth may be experiencing unstable or harmful situations. Every child we select has experienced trauma that threatens their long-term educational and professional success. In fact, the vast majority of our youth are affected by multiple challenging situations at the same time, like poverty, abuse, homelessness, and domestic violence. Out of 12 risk factors that we assess, 86% of our youth experience at least three and over half experience six or more. The early intervention and consistent, one-on-one support that Friends provide to our youth is invaluable. “I can’t imagine what it would be like for Julie* if she didn’t have a Friend,” says a teacher of one of our youth. “Her story of positive change this year is one of the most drastic I’ve ever been a part of in eight years of teaching, and I’m so thankful for that.” 26 out of 30 were born to a teen parent 12 out of 30 have been involved in the foster care system 4 out of 30 do not have a stable place to sleep for the night 13 out of 30 are victims of abuse or neglect 12 out of 30 have been impacted by domestic violence *Names changed to protect program youth 4 5 Our youth know that they belong Research proves that youth who engage in formal social and emotional learning not only show better classroom behavior and greater motivation to learn, but also score higher on key tests. A Friend’s strength has always been their ability to coach youth to develop the non-cognitive skills they need to succeed in school and out in the community. This year, we combined our organization’s 20+ years of practical experience with this growing body of research to create a structured social and emotional learning curriculum and deepen our program’s impact. It is our goal that every youth graduate from the Friends program with nine core assets in place. One of our youth, Jackson,* has shown tremendous growth in these assets through his engagement with our partner, Marquis Companies senior care facilities. Jackson’s family moves around a lot in search of affordable housing, preventing him from developing deep roots in a community. Jackson’s Friend, Emmit,* started taking him to gardening and barbecue events at the Marquis Mill Park facility, and Jackson eventually began to build relationships with the seniors. Staff members at Marquis Mill Park say that their residents ask when Jackson will be visiting next to read with them or help with a craft project. What’s more, Jackson has learned more about potential careers as he has gotten to know doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and activities directors. This exposure to new opportunities and the sense of belonging Jackson feels when he walks through the doors at Mill Park help buoy him through times of stress and uncertainty. 6 Nine Core Assets Growth Mindset Positive Relationship Building Finding Your Spark Problem Solving Self-Determination Self-Management Perseverance/Grit Hope Belonging 7 A space for every dreamer Since opening our new program facility in Gresham’s Rockwood neighborhood, our Friends and youth have poured through the doors to enjoy communal dinners, karaoke sing-offs, cooking classes, and evenings next to the fireplace with board games and books. This flurry of activity is exactly how we envisioned the space would be used. One of the most magical things about our building is that it can meet the many needs and varied interests of our youth. On a Friday teen night, we simultaneously held a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the gym and an anime appreciation night on the big screen in the living room. Darren, a Friend of 16 years, raves about the facility. “The AV equipment is great, and the living room is homey and comfortable. My kids are all really impressed with the building. It also makes seeing my youth much more convenient because 80% of them live in East County, and my older adolescents can easily meet me there.” Our East County capital campaign, launched in 2014, successfully raised over $5 million for the construction of this incredible facility. The building layout was largely driven by youth input. Some youth wanted new computers, some wanted a full gymnasium, while others wanted an art room. The common thread weaving through all their dreams was that our youth wanted a safe place to relax, do their homework, and just be a kid. To those who supported the campaign, we cannot thank you enough. Your contributions will continue to impact our youth for years to come as they engage with their Friends and peers in their new home away from home. Long-Term Outcomes 83% of our youth earn their high school diploma or GED. 60% have parents who did not complete high school. 93% of our youth avoid the juvenile justice system. 50% have parents who were incarcerated. 98% of our youth avoid early parenting. 85% were born to a teen parent. 8 9 Discovering your spark Many of our youth do not have computers or access to the internet in their homes. At a time when technology-related skills are increasingly necessary for academic and professional advancement, it is crucial that our Friends help level the playing field by supplementing our youth’s exposure to the digital world. Thanks to a generous grant from the Mount Hood Cable Regulatory Commission, we were able to outfit our Rockwood building with state-of-the-art educational technology enhancements. We can now engage youth in ways that were not previously possible, including interactive remote tutoring, video editing projects, and STEMrelated activities. Social Return on Investment By giving youth the tools and confidence they need to meet our long-term outcomes, the Friends program is addressing root causes of generational poverty and marginalization. Achievement of these goals not only has a life-changing effect on graduates of the Friends program, but also has a substantial benefit to society as a whole. For every $1 invested in the organization, more than $7.60 is returned to the community as a result of higher wages earned and lower burdens on social safety nets and the justice system. Our Friends help youth to explore their world and use their imagination, curiosity, and creativity. We want to spark new interests, driving youth to discover strengths interest. Last year, Jamal* attended our very first video editing workshop, where $1=$7 he storyboarded, filmed, and edited a video about his life. He now wants to pursue It makes economic sense. and passions that may one day unlock their path in life. As our youth enter high school, Friends increasingly focus on supporting youth in their chosen areas of a career in filmmaking. We see all of our youth as future scientists, journalists, computer programmers, The Harvard Business School Association of Oregon showed that for every $1 invested in Friends of the Children, the community benefits over $7 in saved expenses the child would have incurred. Helping one child saves the community $900,000. beauticians, and designers. They are all capable of great things, and we will leave no stone unturned in helping them to fulfill that greatness. 10 11 Life-long, forever effect Shortly before graduating from our program, Jesse stood in front of the entire Friends of the Children staff and thanked his Friend, Mike, from the bottom of his heart. “Friends of the Children made one of the biggest decisions for my life when they gave me Mike. He Friends Forever Society & Child Investment Program Each year, Friends of the Children - Portland works to grow its program and serve more children in need of a Friend. As the number of benefiting youth increases, the Friends Forever Society and Child Investment Program are necessary to sustain services for years to come. We thank our generous donors for being a part of these campaigns. year’s Friend Raiser. He wanted to make sure others knew how important his Friend has been in his life and to thank all those that made their life-long friendship possible. Even though our youth graduate from our program, they never graduate from our hearts. What has Jesse been doing in the last year? We caught up with him at his job as a package handler with UPS. He told us about how he loves having a steady job with a company that offers him room for growth and that he is always receiving positive feedback from his supervisors. He aspires to one day be a UPS driver. The stability offered by the position’s sizeable pay is lucrative for Jesse—something he didn’t always have while growing up and wishes to change for himself. and the Friends of the Children program.
