General-service incandescent lamps
The general-service light bulb owes its name to
its bulbous shape, which has remained almost
unchanged to this day. The tungsten filament
contained within the bulb's glass shell, in which
there used to be a vacuum but which is nowadays more usually filled with an inert gas, begins to glow as electricity is passed through it.
Despite considerable technical progress that has
been made, typical disadvantages associated
with light bulbs still remain. For instance, incandescent lamps mainly radiate heat with no more
than 5–10% light output and have a limited
service life of approx. 1000 operating hours.
Owing to the great variety of possible bulb shapes and surfaces, general-service incandescent
lamps have retained a firm place in decorative
lighting for the home and often form an important element of luminaire design. They are available with the following bases: E14/E12,
E26/E27, E39/E40, B15d and B22d.
VS Lampholders for general-service
incandescent lamps
Depending on operating conditions, lampholders are made of plastic, metal or porcelain. In accordance with protection class I,
metal lampholders must be integrated into the
luminaire's grounding, which can either be a
direct protective conductor terminal on the lampholder via the cap or insert or a conductive
connection via the metal components of the
luminaire's casing. Due to their heat resistance,
Edison lampholders made of porcelain are
frequently used for lamps of higher wattages.
Due to their weather resistance, they are also
a popular choice for outdoor luminaires.

Classic lampholder materials like metal and porcelain are increasingly being displaced by modern thermoplastics. As the heat radiated by incandescent lamps subjects luminaires to thermal loads, the permissible operating temperature is an important reference value for lampholders made of thermoplastics. This T rating is
marked on the part of the lampholder containing the contacts. The most suitable material is
ascertained by measuring the so-called casing
rim temperature, which is gauged inside the
luminaire at the rim of the lampholder. The EN
60598 luminaire regulation specifies the various lamp positions and thus the respective measuring conditions for the various luminaire types.
One piece VS lampholders made of highly heatresistant polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) have a
standard T210 rating. In addition, VosslohSchwabe provides lampholders made of
high-performance liquid crystal polymer (LCP)
with a T rating of T270.
Vossloh-Schwabe's range contains both onepiece and three piece Edison lampholders with
plug or screw contacts. In conjunction with
numerous different VS fastenings, VosslohSchwabe thus provides the right solution for
all installation conditions.
