his month’s topic is “Hub of the Hill Country” — recognizing Kerrville’s role as a regional hub for health care,
shopping, business, restaurants, entertainment and more. People come here to go to the hospital, department
of motor vehicles, the movies, school shopping, to buy feed for their livestock and game animals. We are the
county seat. We have a veterans hospital, and we host the Hill Country District Junior Livestock Show, bringing in
more than 30 counties. It’s important for local business owners to understand this market that comes from outside of
Kerrville, so they can know how to capitalize on it.
The value of this aspect of the community may well be overlooked by many. So it’s not just tourism that brings
people to our county, but it’s a wide spectrum of goods and services that attract our nearby neighbors.
We can be grateful for entities here that serve multiple counties. The medical community may be the most obvious
with the presence of both Peterson Regional Medical Center and the veterans hospital and the many private practice
physicians, therapists and other health care providers. Maybe the most overlooked positive regional aspect of Kerr
County is the large number of charitable organizations that serve a number of other counties, such as the Hill Country
Chapter of the American Red Cross, Hill Country CARES, the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, Any
Baby Can and many others.
The list of businesses that serve these regional visitors is too long to name. More importantly, it might be difficult to
come up with a list of businesses that don’t have an opportunity to serve these visitors, even if those visits are not the
primary reason for their trip into Kerr County. Is your business reaching out to capitalize on this opportunity?
Maintaining and expanding our regional role is a team effort in which we are all members of the team. Let’s make
all our visitors feel welcome and provide them with high quality service. We will all benefit from the friends we make
by doing business this way.

errville’s always been
a really good town. My
family’s always traded there. I
continue to trade there; there’s
really nice people. It’s a pretty good
hub for this part of the world.”

Kerrville almost weekly, on why he enjoys shopping in the
area. Read more from other shoppers on page 11.
F
or motorcycle shop owner Bob
Kee, being a place where people
want to go is not just part of his
business model, it’s part of his
company’s name Destination
CycleSports.
“Unless I can get everybody in Kerr County to
ride a motorcycle ... I’ve got a limited audience,”
Kee said. “It’s part of why we called it Destination.
We knew we’d be a hub for the area.”
Siblings Kathy Thompson and Julie Milam have
also stitched together a business at Creations
that’s based on more than just local customers.
“We have a lot of wonderful customers here,
but the inventory we carry, the variety we
carry, could not be supported by a small town
— any small town,” Thompson said.
Although the two businesses couldn’t be
more different, what they have in common is
a business plan shared by many local shops,
restaurants and service providers — a plan
built on a base of regional customers who come
in from surrounding counties.
Jonas Titas, executive director of the Kerr
Economic Development Corporation, said the
business community here is a hub that draws in
people from all over.
“We’re the biggest city in the Hill Country,
so we have more amenities, more diversity a
bigger population base and more things to do,”
Titas said.
He said organizations like KEDC and the
Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce look to
promote Kerrville as a destination and a place
for people to come do business.
Titas said it’s not just retail that brings
people to Kerrville. In addition to shopping,
people come from surrounding communities
for medical services, to get their driver’s license
renewed, golfing and restaurants.
In addition to the local population, there
are another 55,587 residents in the five
counties that surround Kerr County. Many
come here for services from medicine
to agriculture and make it a day visiting
downtown stores and local restaurants.
In addition to Peterson Regional Medical
Center, which is one of two major hospitals in
the region, Kerrville is home to the Kerrville
VA Medical Center. There also are a number
of charitable organizations based in Kerrville
that serve the surrounding area, such as Big
Brothers Big Sisters, the Hill Country Chapter of
the American Red Cross and CASA.
Harold Dean, president of the Kerrville Area
Chamber of Commerce, said the out-of-town
customers are extremely important, especially
for retail shops.

“Customers from out of town bring in a lot
of tax dollars, they buy goods and services, and
they support our community,” said Harold Dean,
executive director of the Kerrville Area Chamber
of Commerce.
Kee estimates that up to 30 percent of his
business is from out of town, with many customers
coming from the Dallas and Austin areas. He said
he has even met a customer at the San Antonio
airport, so the customer could buy a bike and ride
it home.
Kee said he relies a lot on his store’s website
and Internet presence and added that he thinks of
himself and his staff as “two-wheel ambassadors”
for Kerrville.
“You always talk about how do people find
Kerrville, what makes them want to retire here.
It’s because they have a great experience here at
some point and time,” Kee said.
In addition to Creations, a quilting and sewing
retail shop on Main Street, Thompson and Milam
own an adjacent retreat facility where they host
three-day quilting and sewing events. Thompson
estimates as much as 90 percent of their business
comes from out of town, with some people
driving three to five hours to visit the shop.
“We have a great website and word of mouth. I
know that’s such an old-fashioned term, but that’s
our No. 1 way of getting people,” Thompson said.
Destination
Cycle owner
Bob Kee
and his wife,
Sarah Kee, are
shown inside
their shop
at 3341A
Loop 534
in Kerrville.
The shop is
an example
of the many
retailers
and service
providers in
Kerr County
that draw
shoppers
from the
surrounding
area.
Like Kee, Thompson views her business as
a destination where people want to go. And
although the business couldn’t be more different
— Thompson refers to her customers as “gals”
while the motorcycle industry is still geared
mostly toward men — both business owners have
the same desire to have their shops be more than
a place to buy something.

“When it rains, (the riders) hole up in my shop
and drink my coffee,” Kee said. “We want this to
be that base for them.”
And at Creations, the idea was just a little
sweeter.
“If you like fabrics, it’s a wonderful place to
hang out, have coffee and some chocolate,”
Thompson said.

CITY VIEW: Many destinations draw visitors from surrounding area
What do you think when you hear Hill Country? You
should be thinking of majestic scenery, the Guadalupe
River and a community rich in culture and heritage.
The face of downtown Kerrville has changed. With
the addition of Peterson Plaza, City Hall and upgrades
to private properties, our downtown truly is the heart
of the city. Downtown is the place to be for unique
shopping experiences and distinctive dining.
Take a ride through the rugged hills. Swim in the
spring-fed creeks, canoe or kayak on the Guadalupe
River. See the wildlife in the early morning or late in the
evening. Stop on the side of the road and take family
pictures in wildflower fields.
There’s something for everyone in Kerrville. The
recent opening of the first segment of the Kerrville River
Trail appeals to the fitness-minded and nature lovers
alike. The trail head at the Riverside Nature Center is
the perfect beginning of a walk, bike or run along the
Guadalupe River. And when you return, save time to
visit the Riverside Nature Center, a premier educational
facility with a focus on native plants and wildlife.
Visit the new and improved Butt-Holdsworth
Memorial Library, a modern library featuring multimedia access. Parents can curl up with a good book,
while children of all ages can enjoy a wide variety of
summer programs.
The Cailloux Theater is one of the most impressive
public theaters in this part of Texas. Magnificent
Broadway musicals, as well as a variety of worldrenowned performers, grace the stage. Outstanding
educational programs are held on a regular basis on the
campus of Schreiner University. Or spend a beautiful Hill
Country evening enjoying great outdoor entertainment
at the Point Theater nearby in Ingram — a venue that
draws patrons from around the world.
If you have a special someone in your family who
likes to golf, you’re in luck. Kerrville is fortunate to have
three distinguished golf courses — the Scott Schreiner
Municipal Golf Course, Riverhill Country Club and
Comanche Trace.
Music and art lovers make their annual pilgrimage to
the Kerrville Folk Festival and the Texas State Arts and
Crafts Fair, as well as visits to the Museum of Western
Art and the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center, where you can
appreciate the Mother’s Love sculpture designed by
James Avery.
Kerrville is blessed with outstanding public parks,
including the downtown Louise Hays Park and KerrvilleSchreiner Park with a variety of different campsites
and facilities that are always in demand. Both are
great places for families to hike, bike, canoe and swim.
During the summer, the Kerrville Parks and Recreation
Department offers an assortment of programming and
events such as a free “Movie in the Park” series, which
is fun for the entire family, adult sports leagues, kid’s
triathlon and bike rodeo, swimming at the Olympic Pool
and more. Don’t forget to cool off at the Carver Park
Sprayground, which is a free water playground amenity.
When you’re looking for something to do, you can find it
in Kerrville.

From the KEDC
What makes Kerrville the business center of the Hill Country
Kerrville is the “Hub of the
Hill Country.” We have the most
vibrant and diverse economy in
the region and the largest population base. The city of Kerrville has
a population of more than 22,000,
while Fredericksburg and Boerne
have about 10,000 each. Comfort
has 2,300 residents, and Bandera
has fewer than 1,000. Kerrville is
Jonas Titas
more than double the size of our
neighboring Hill Country
communities.
Many of the other cities and communities in the region are
reliant exclusively on one or two economic drivers, making them
vulnerable to downturns in certain industries. Kerrville’s economy
is multifaceted, driven by tourism, service/hospitality, retail and
health care, as well as a growing and very important manufacturing base.
This burgeoning manufacturing base supports high-paying
and quality jobs for local residents. We are fortunate to have
leading companies like Fox Tank, James Avery Craftsmen and
Nature Blinds. Manufacturing is the fastest growing sector of
our economy. The success of this industry provides valuable job
opportunities that enable local residents to buy houses and live
comfortable lives. This helps support the local school systems,
hospitals and retail/service providers.

Kerrville’s robust service and hospitality base is driven by the
natural beauty of the hills and the Guadalupe River, which attract
motorcycle tours, RV parks, summer camps and hunters from
around the country. Visitors come to town and stay in hotels,
shop in our stores and eat in our restaurants. They spend money
in our community. Plans and initiatives are under way to further
strengthen this segment of the economy by continuing to work
toward the development of a new hotel/convention center and
creation of a wine or craft agriculture trail that will continue to
make Kerrville the Hill Country destination.
Kerrville boasts a wealth of community assets that we are all
lucky to enjoy, which attract new residents, entrepreneurs/employees and families. We have great schools, health care, quality
of life amenities, retail outlets, infrastructure and a pro-business
philosophy. The development and pooling of these assets fosters
the development of more commercial enterprises.
The growth of Kerrville’s commercial and industrial base will
help create more revenue for local governments. This helps keep
our personal property taxes low and makes it possible for us to enjoy the high level of services (police, fire, EMS, road maintenance)
that we all enjoy. It will also help create more job opportunities for
local residents. This comprehensive economic development strategy of focusing on jobs, tourism and quality of life will continue to
drive Kerrville’s status as the “Hub of the Hill Country.”

From the CUSTOMER’S PERSPECTIVE
Out-of-towners share
why they shop in Kerrville
By Marivel Resendiz & Beth Elderkin
P
atrons from Ingram, Center Point
and Hunt flock to Kerrville every
week to shop, dine and be entertained, but Kerrville’s reach extends
far beyond this county, with people
from as far as Divide, Rocksprings and Medina
also coming to the area to do business. The
city has a potential customer reach of more
than 100,000 people, going 60 to 80 miles
beyond the city limits.
So what exactly convinces out-of-area residents to drive two hours to buy groceries or go
to the bank, and what can Kerrville businesses
do to encourage more out-of-towners to come
here? The Kerrville Daily Times chatted with a
few rural residents to get their input.
Local retailers
About every two weeks, Nancy Craddock
travels more than 70 miles to get to Kerrville
from Rocksprings to stock up on supplies. She
said her must-visit stores are H-E-B and
Wal-Mart.
“They have the things I need on my list,”
she said. “And for whatever else, I love Belk’s.
It’s my favorite place.”
Also from Rocksprings, Judy Letsinger also
said her main stop for groceries, pet grooming
and restaurant dining is Kerrville.
“Whatever we don’t have available in Rocksprings, I come to Kerrville for,” Letsinger said.
Wide restaurant selection
Local medical practitioners and social reasons are what brings Evelyn Weaver into town.
She said she and her husband spend three to
four days a week in Kerrville. Aside from attending the meeting of the Kerr County Cactus
& Succulent Society, food is on their mind
when they visit
“We go to all the restaurants,” she said.
“There’s not anyone we (classify as) favorite.
We’ll eat Italian food, seafood, Mexican food
— whichever we want to go to that day.”
Exercise opportunities
Rocksprings resident Amanda Cox was
traveling to San Antonio for her needs before a
fitness center convinced her otherwise.
“It was TrueFit that brought me to Kerrville,”
she said, adding that her reasons for continuing to venture into Kerrville have broadened.
“I’ve made friends through working out.
Girlfriends and I try to get together once a
month, and we’ll go eat at Grape Juice,”
Cox said.
Not just a matter of proximity
These transient customers aren’t just coming to Kerrville because of proximity alone.
Becky Brown makes an hour and a half trip
to Kerrville despite, opting to come to the
are, despite having the Uvalde shopping 20
minutes closer to her residence in Nueces
Canyon near Barksdale. On her visits, Brown
also works out at TrueFit, visits her mom and
then spends time shopping.
“When we travel to do things, a majority
of the time, it’s Kerrville,” Brown said. “I’ve
done all the restaurants, and of course, I’m
crazy about Schreiner Goods. It’s just mind
boggling Kerrville has a store of that caliber.”
Business & ranch supplies
Vince and Dora Maltos, who own a restaurant in Rocksprings, have been coming to Kerrville for restaurant supplies for the past 26
years. The couple prefers Kerrville’s close-knit
community over San Antonio, but they also
like the selection better than they find in Del
Rio, which is closer to home.
“I know all the stores (in Kerrville). Sometimes I go to Del Rio, and I don’t know what
I’m going to buy in Wal-Mart because I don’t
know (the store), but I know Kerrville. So I go
to Kerrville,” Dora Maltos said.
Tooter Trees is a Divide-based rancher who
comes to Kerrville once or twice per week for
feed and other ranch supplies. He said the
65-mile drive is worth it to see a movie or get
a bite to eat.
“Kerrville’s always been a really good
town,” Trees said. “My family’s always traded
there. I continue to trade there; there’s really
nice people. It’s a pretty good hub for this
part of the world.”
For employment
Fredericksburg resident Christie Zenner
commutes five days a week to come work
in Kerrville at an insurance agency, but she
also comes every weekend for manicures,
shopping, dry cleaning and other necessities.
Although she travels away from home to do
much of her shopping, Zenner said Kerrville
should consider giving discounts to the local
shoppers who opt to stay here to shop.
“Over in Fredericksburg, if you are a local
resident and you show them your driver’s
license, they’ll normally give you a 10-percent
discount on your purchase. ... If you lived
here, you might like it if your merchant gave
you a discount, being as how you’re supporting them being in the community,”
Zenner said.
