Order Sons of Italy Garibaldi Lodge
President
Justin Bova
It does not seem such a long time ago, but twenty five years have
passed since a group of wise men sat around the table in the basement
of the Grant Motor Inn and planned the first Annual Sons of Italy Dinner.
I am told the primary function of this event was to act as a bridge to build and strengthen the relationship
between the Italian community and the wider community of Winnipeg. We would show what is best in us,
while we invited people to our dinner table and into our hearts. At the same time, we would raise money
to support those in our city who need it and deserve it the most. That wisdom endures.
Under their care and guidance, a new generation of leadership has emerged not only to continue the
mission but also to expand it and make it better. Tonight, as we celebrate our 25th anniversary of
this annual Gala, we salute these wise founders of our lodge and we, the new generation of ItalianCanadians, pledge to continue to act as exemplary citizens of this city, of this province, and of this
beautiful country that is our native land.
I must thank and acknowledge Dinner Chairs Franco Petrelli and Tom De Nardi along with the entire
Dinner Committee in putting together what will be the largest, most successful Gala in Club history. While
tonight we look back and honour the achievements of the past twenty five years, it is the tireless efforts,
hard work, and unyielding dedication to the mission of the Brothers and Sisters that convince me the
next twenty five years will be even greater.
Sincerely,
Justin B. Bova

It was to be a lovely evening under the stars at Deerhurst Resort.
Instead it was pouring rain. And the client hadn’t planned for any
entertainment. That’s when AVW-TELAV’s Chris B. came to the
rescue. He quickly set up speakers indoors, and using his own music,
thoroughly entertained the group until past 1 a.m. By the last dance,
he had worked over 15 hours. Chris’ comment was, “That’s what
we do.” And he’s right. Service Second To None is what we do,
and what you can always expect from us. For all your audio visual

Vice Consul of Italy in winnipeg
Stanislao Carbone
On behalf of the government of Italy I would like to take this
opportunity to offer my best wishes to the Sons of Italy, Garibaldi
Lodge. Over the past 25 years the Lodge has made its presence felt
by offering a coterie of social services, philanthropic endeavours and
cultural and recreational activities reflective of its aims and objectives and over arching mandate. This
organization has demonstrated a synergistic impulse combining the energies and creative capacities
of each of its members with a firm belief in collective action and consensus building. It has redefined
itself over the years in order to capture and interpret societal changes and trends. As a consequence
it has projected a positive and dynamic image of Italian Canadian cultural and social life. It can look
forward to the next 25 years in building upon its legacy and forging a strong Italian Canadian identity
based on the principles of empowerment and heightened social awareness.
Vorrei di nuovo offrire i miei piu sentiti auguri ai Figli d’Italia e spero che continuano a dimostrare un
forte impegno sociale e responsabilita` civica in ogni attivita` che loro svolgono.
Distinti saluti,

Vince Bova Memorial Award
In 1997, one of our beloved
brothers, Vince Bova, passed away
after a long battle with cancer. To
know Vince was to know a man who
exemplified the spirit of The Sons
of Italy. He was committed to the
club in a manner that was beyond
compare.
He could always be found at social functions, volunteering his time
and energy. He was a man who never asked for any credit, but was
always willing to lend a hand and share a smile.
In Vince's memory, we now present this annual award to a member
who works diligently behind the scenes as a dedicated participant in
The Sons of Italy.
The past recipients have selected a deserving recipient and the
award will be announced this evening.

This evening the Sons of Italy (Garibaldi Lodge) is proud to be
supporting the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. Heart disease
and stroke affects one in three of us and is the leading cause of death
in Canada. Organizations like Heart and Stroke provide us with life
saving research, education and public awareness. These continued and
dedicated efforts make the difference in saving lives.
We have also been afforded the distinct honour of supporting two
Helping Hands Charities. The first is from our own Italian community:
the Dante Alighieri School, which is the backbone of Italian language in
Manitoba with students ranging from just four years of age to their late
teens. The Sons of Italy recognizes the importance of the Dante because
where there is language there is culture. Our second charity is no less
worthy and strikes at the very heart and foundation of our country: the
Canadian Hero Fund. This is an organization that supports families and
children of Canada’s fallen soldiers in recent conflicts. It provides the
means where there otherwise might not be one for military families and
their children.
It is also with a sense of both admiration and pride that we celebrate
and recognize the outstanding accomplishment of one of our community
members. Mr. Charlie Aiello is this year’s recipient of the CIBPA Professional Award for his outstanding
accomplishments and service to his customers in wealth management.
Thank you to our Sons of Italy brothers that worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this special 25th
Annual Sons of Italy Gala Dinner. Each person on the committee brings their unique talents to the table
which help to facilitate an event that exceeds expectations each year!
A heartfelt and special thank you goes out to CIBC our title sponsor. CIBC has shown itself to be a real
community leader and Manitoba is lucky to have a financial institution that has the fortitude to support
local community events!
In closing we would also like to recognize the tremendous financial support of all tonight’s sponsors. It is
due to your efforts that we continue to be in a position to help Manitoba organizations grow and meet the
demands that face them. We understand the demands for community support are often overwhelming
and we are humbled that on a consistent basis you choose to partner with the Sons of Italy. Last but
certainly not least, thanks must go to all of you for continuing to not only purchase tickets, but to attend
our event as part of our extended Italian family.
Tonight we invite you to be an honourary Italian, which always ensures great food, friends and a love for
life.

Honourary co-chair
Bob Irving
As Past Chair and Senior Advisory Committee Member for the
Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba (HSFM), I am very proud
to serve as Honourary Co-Chair for the 25th Annual Sons of Italy
Gala Dinner.
The Foundation is overjoyed to be chosen as this year’s Charity of Choice and is delighted to
partner with the Sons of Italy, Garibaldi Lodge, who we celebrate tonight, for showing great
dedication and generosity to Manitoba charitable organizations for a quarter of a century.
Many of you may have come to know me as the long time sports director at CJOB/Power97, and the play-by-play voice for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but I come here tonight
representing a Foundation that has personally meant a great deal to me.
I became involved with the HSFM as a survivor of a congenital heart defect. I have endured
two open-heart surgeries and several other procedures to keep my heart healthy. A large
scar on my chest serves as a daily reminder of how close heart disease came to cutting my
life short.
Since the Foundation began over 50 years ago, the number of people dying prematurely of
heart disease and stroke has been reduced by 75 per cent. It is through the generosity of
Manitobans, such as you who are here tonight, that people like me can live long, fulfilling
lives.
Yet despite so much progress, heart disease and stroke remains the leading cause of death
in Manitoba. Tonight’s Gala will help to further the Foundation’s mission to support worldclass research, primary prevention initiatives, health promotion, and advocacy within the
province.
On behalf of the Foundation, and in particular HSFM Board Chair Michael Buhr, I thank the
Sons of Italy with all my heart for your efforts in helping those who have been affected by
heart disease and stroke. Congratulations on achieving 25 years of giving to the community!
Sincerely,
Bob Irving

Honourary co-chair
senator Don Plett
Welcome to the 25th Annual Sons of Italy/CIBPA Gala Dinner. I
am honoured to serve in the capacity of Honourary Co-Chair for
this event. The generosity displayed this evening will go directly
towards the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
I have had the opportunity of attending this event in the past and have always been
overwhelmed by the generosity of Manitoba companies and individuals. By attending and
participating tonight in the various levels of sponsorship you are each responsible for
improving the quality of life for many families and individuals in Manitoba.
The Sons of Italy is an organization that stands out in Manitoba; their support of countless
charities and groups has proven them to be community leaders. The brotherhood they share
is a testament to what communities can do working together for a common goal. The Sons
of Italy is one of the reasons why I am proud to be representing Manitoba in Senate.
Congratulations to the Sons of Italy on the work that you are doing. I truly thank you and may
God bless you now and in the future.
Sincerely,
Senator Don Plett
Reno Molinari
Welcome to the Son’s Of Italy 25th Annual Gala Fundraising Dinner
celebrating 25 years of giving back to the community. I am deeply
grateful for having been asked to serve as one of the Honourary
Co-Chairs along with Senator Don Plett and Mr. Bob Irving.
I have been a member of the Garibaldi Lodge for about twenty
years having served in various capacities including president. My
involvement has had an immeasurable positive impact on both my personal and professional
life. I commend the current executive for their hard work and effort which is on display this
evening and this year’s theme is so appropriate to what the organization stands for.
This years’ charity of choice, The Heart & Stroke Foundation provides an invaluable service
to our community. I have had the privilege of meeting many of their staff and volunteers and
there is no question that they are a class act. Congratulations and keep up the good work.
In closing, I would like to thank all of you for attending. We are so fortunate having such
a large following that keeps supporting this event every year and without it, the Garibaldi
Lodge could never accomplish what it does.

Charity of Choice
The Heart and Stroke Foundation
In Canada, heart disease and stroke are two
of the three leading causes of death and
are responsible for 30 percent of all deaths
in our nation. Currently over 1.6 million
Canadians have heart disease or are living
with the effects of stroke, the single biggest
cause of adult disability. It is estimated that
heart disease and stroke cost the Canadian
Economy 22.2 billion every year.
Since that time there have been many
advances made in the fight against heart
disease and stroke, advances such as the
world’s first heart-valve transplant surgery,
the use of ASA as a preventative drug for
stroke, the development of the pacemaker,
and the use of the clot busting drug t-PA,
which, if accessed quickly can erase the
effects of stroke. These and many other
research discoveries have helped to reduce
the number of Canadians dying prematurely
of heart disease and stroke by as much as
75 percent.
Still today, heart disease and stroke together
remain the leading cause of death in
Manitoba. Over eight lives are lost each day
in our province to this - our number one
health threat.
The Foundation realizes that many cases
of heart disease and stroke along with the
associated cost of treatment are preventable,
which is why HSFM has chosen to commit
20 per cent of its annual research budget to
primary prevention initiatives in the province.
Primary prevention research addresses heart
disease and stroke risk factors – such as
smoking, physical inactivity and obesity before they start. With the collective effort
of governments, employers, educators and
individual citizens across all sectors we know
that population-wide change is possible.
The Foundation is very honoured to be
chosen as the Charity of Choice by the
Sons of Italy, Garibaldi Lodge on their 25th
anniversary and proud to have HSFM’s
Past Chair and Senior Advisory Committee
Member Bob Irving serve as Honourary
Co-Chair for this Gala event. It is through the
efforts of organizations like the Sons of Italy
that the Foundation can support leadingedge research, provide health education
and resources, and advocate for healthier
communities, all of which work to save lives
in this province. Thanks to your support,
together, we can lead Manitobans to a future
free of heart disease and stroke.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of
Manitoba, a volunteer-based health charity,
leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke
and reducing their impact through the

Charlie Aiello
Family Values
As a successful investment advisor and wealth manager, Charlie Aiello
certainly understands the concept of risk and reward. For Charlie
however, the true definition of the term is reflected in a lifetime of striving
to balance his career with his family.
“My father taught us from an early age that while money may give you unlimited options, you’ll never be
truly happy unless you have a life outside work,” explains Charlie. “There are plenty of financial rewards
in the work I do but there’s great risk too if you don’t make time for family.”
To that end, Charlie is not only building a thriving financial planning business, he and his wife Pina are
raising their daughter Samantha and sons Peter and Franco in a way that would make any Italian nonno
and nonna proud. “Italian families love to get together to celebrate life and we’ve tried to raise our kids in
that tradition,” states Charlie. “From my own experience, I’m closer to my cousins than many Canadians
are to their own brothers and sisters.”
Familial responsibility was ingrained in young Charlie by his mother Yolanda and father Peter, who
emigrated from Italy in 1965. Their young family included five-year-old Pasquale, soon to be called Charlie
by his Canadian friends. Always a high achiever with a desire to be successful in business, Charlie found
his calling at Wood Gundy (now CIBC Wood Gundy) in 1987. Apart from a short stint at another company,
Charlie has worked exclusively at the downtown Winnipeg firm. It’s been a lucrative business, but as
Charlie says, what satisfies him most is knowing that he’s building peace of mind for the people who
entrust him with their financial futures.
“When I started in the financial planning industry my goal was to be a top producer but I realized that far
beyond being recognized as the best, I got the most pleasure out of helping my clients meet their goals,”
he says. “It’s great to be in the position, almost 25 years later, to see that what we put down on paper
back then is now coming to fruition.”
To Charlie the values inherent in family have made it easier for him to succeed in business. The advice he
received from his father so many years ago – work hard but enjoy life – has served him well.
“Very early on in life I learned to take responsibility for everything I did,” he says. “This made me
understand that your reputation is worth as much as all the money in the world. I’m most proud of the
references I get from my clients and my business associates.”
At the heart of Charlie’s ongoing success is his day-to-day reliance on the principles he learned at a young
age. He says his Italian heritage has shaped the way he goes about conducting business.
“Loyalty is very important to Italians. I’m very loyal to my family and I’m also loyal to my assistants and
my clients. I treat them like family.”
Charlie Aiello knows there’s great risk in living an unbalanced life. By focusing on family, he stays true to
his roots and that on its own is enough reward.

Sons of Italy Splendore D’Italia
Folk Dancers of Manitoba
Buona sera a tutti. Tanti auguri ai Figli d’Italia e
CIBPA per il loro successo continuato.
Congratulations to Sons of Italy on 25 Years of
Giving. I am delighted to have been asked to
bring greetings on behalf of the executive and
dancers of the Sons of Italy Splendore d’Italia
Folk Dancers of Manitoba.
Taking time to reflect in the context of present
accomplishments provides one the opportunity
to wonder how it all went by so quickly. In
preparing this greeting, I had the opportunity
to look through almost 40 years of articles and photographs that archive the many members of this
particular dance group. I am sure there are many attendees of this gala dinner who can remember
dance practices held in the basement of Holy Rosary Catholic Church
with Mrs. Angela Lake, the first Centro D’Italia on Notre Dame
Avenue, or our new Centro Caboto on Wilkes Avenue. Hopefully,
you are also reminded of the performances across Manitoba which
brought you before many audiences which included people from all
walks of life including distinguished dignitaries.
The dance group continues to dedicate itself to the preservation and
interpretation of authentic Italian regional folk dances. Our repertoire
and commitment to the essence of Italian culture through dance
continues to be one of the many reasons for the establishment of our
group.
Dancers, past and present, continue to be recognized for their
academic and altruistic efforts by receiving acknowledgement through scholarships from various
educational and business institutions, including the Sons of Italy Garibaldi Lodge, La Lupa di Roma Lodge
and the newly established Sons of Italy Splendore D’Italia Folk Dancers Scholarship. This year, one of
our senior dancers, Franca Petrelli, is a recipient of scholarships from both the Sons of Italy Splendore
D’Italia Folk Dancers and the Sons of Italy Garibaldi Lodge. We wish her all the best for a bright and
successful future in her chosen field of study at the University of Winnipeg.
Finally, and on behalf of the executive of the Sons of Italy Splendore d’Italia Folk Dancers, I would like to
congratulate this year’s honorees and recipients of various awards. Thanks to the generous support and
sponsorship of the members of the Sons of Italy Garibaldi Lodge, our official name will now reflect their
committed effort to sustain the dance group into the future.
Best wishes and continued success. Salve!

Sons of Italy Profile
Order Sons of Italy of Canada
The Order Sons of Italy of Canada is an organization of men and women who are devoted to the
celebration of Italian heritage, community service and charitable good works. The first lodge in Canada
was established in Ontario in 1915. Currently, there are fifteen Lodges in Canada and over 650 Lodges
in the U.S.A. It is the largest Fraternal Order of Canadians and Americans of Italian origin.
In Manitoba, there are three Lodges: the Garibaldi men’s lodge, the Lupa Di Roma women’s lodge, and
the Leonardo Da Vinci Youth Lodge. Together, these lodges under the Order Sons of Italy are making a
difference in Manitoba.
Garibaldi Lodge
The Garibaldi Lodge was the first lodge of the Order Sons of Italy of Canada to be
founded in Manitoba. This year witnessed their twenty-fifth annual gala fundraising
dinner. Each year members celebrate giving back to the community in conjunction
with the Canadian Italian Business Professional Association by donating significant
funds to a charity of choice.
Along with advancing the general community, Garibaldi Lodge promotes cultural
endeavours by supporting local groups in Winnipeg like the Premier League “Sons
of Italy Lions” soccer team, the “Sons of Italy Splendore D’Italia Dance Group” and the Dante Alighieri
Cultural Society. The Lodge also finances higher education by supporting a scholarship program involving
all Manitoba universities and a National scholarship fund.
La Lupa Di Roma Lodge
The La Lupa Di Roma Lodge was formed in 1989. Each year the Lodge hosts special fundraising events
for families including their major Halloween Party. The La Lupa Di Roma Lodge also holds a brunch
in March of each year in recognition of International Women’s Day. At this annual event a Manitoba
woman of Italian heritage is honoured for her accomplishments and involvement in the community and
is presented with the “La Donna Dell’Anno” award. Like the Garibaldi Lodge, La Lupa Di Roma Lodge
also offers a scholarship program for qualifying individuals who are pursuing post-secondary education.
Through the years the Lodge has supported charities, seniors groups, children’s activities and individuals
in need. It strives to aid the community at large in all possible ways.
Leonardo Da Vinci Youth Lodge
The Leonardo Da Vinci Youth Lodge was created in 2005 to give Italian youths in Winnipeg the
opportunity to get involved in both the Italian community and other worthwhile activities in the general
community. In collaboration with the Garibaldi and La Lupa Di Roma Lodges its members help various
organizations through fundraising events. Its members are constantly working to achieve their goal of
making Winnipeg a better place for all citizens.
