Dear Colleagues,
After an appreciable start of our very
own Newsletter - REFLECTIONS, we
are humbled to get contributions from
the staff.
Time to gear up with utmost
enthusiasm for *the festival of lights DIWALI*
Hope you enjoy our current issue.
It’s festive time of the year. The
upcoming second issue of the
newsletter completely reflects how
the festivals are such essential
ingredients of our lives – spiritually,
emotionally & socially. This issue
reflects on significant events like
Ganesh Chathurthi, Navratri/ Durga
Puja, Eid- Ul- Adha (colloquially known
as Bakri- Eid) & our preparations for
the DIWALI.

The venue for annual staff picnic
was ‘Water Kingdom’.
It sure was a lot of fun time
together and yes, of course, it
proved to be a great,
much sought after
stress buster.
“On 22nd Sept 2013 ,the present and former
players of Anglo Eastern played a Football match
against the Vashi based Just For Kicks Football
Team.
It was a keenly contested game and at the end of
play the score remained tied at 1-1. Capt. Sudipto
Dasgupta scored for Anglo Eastern.
Players from AEMTC also joined us in the team.
It was commendable for some of the players to
travel as far as from Borivili , Goregaon and
Wadala to arrive at 0730 am on a Sunday.
The match was played on the Fr Agnels Sports
Complex Astro Turf, Vashi.”

Ganesh Chaturthi also known as Vinayaka
Chaturthi OR ‘Vinayaka Chavithi’ is one of
the important Hindu festivals celebrated
throughout India with a great devotion.
Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Shukla Chaturthi of
the Hindu month of Bhadra (generally occurs
between August and September). Ganesha
Chaturthi is celebrated on the birthday
(rebirth) of the lord Ganesha, the son of
Shiva and Parvati. It is believed that Lord
Ganesha bestows his presence on earth for
all his devotees during this festival.

The duration of this festival varies from 1 day to
11 days, depending on the place and tradition. On
the last day of the festival the idols are taken out
in a colorful and musical procession and immersed
traditionally in water.
As per Hindu mythology Lord Ganesh is considered
as “Vigana Harta” (one who removes obstacles)
and “Buddhi Pradaayaka” (one who grants
intelligence). This festival is very important for
students, they worship Lord Ganesh to illumine
their minds. Ganesha is widely worshipped as the
god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune and
traditionally invoked at the beginning of any new
venture or at the start of travel.

Navratri is celebrated all over India
with much pomp, faith and reverence.
Such adoration to Mother Goddess
is unique to Hinduism. The word
Navaratri literally means nine nights
in Sanskrit, nava meaning nine and
ratri meaning nights, with each of the
nine nights being dedicated to one
of the nine forms of the Goddess.
Navratri begins on the first day of the
bright half of Ashvin or Ashwayuja
(September-October) and ends on
the ninth day of Ashvin. The tenth
day is celebrated as Dasara or Vijaya
Dashami. The festival also marks the
arrival of winter season, a period when
Nature undergoes several changes.
In Hindu mythology, Navratri
celebrates the victory of Goddess
Durga over Mahishasura, the
buffalo-headed demon. She fought
for nine days and nine nights before
emerging victorious on the tenth day.
Goddess Shakti in the nine forms
is worshipped during the period
for knowledge, wealth, prosperity
and auspiciousness. Knowingly or
unknowingly during this period we
also recognize the primordial source
of energy (Shakti), which manifests
in all living and nonliving.
Navratri is celebrated in different
ways throughout India. Although,
the universal nature of the festival
is often found to transcend regional
influences and local culture, the
Garba Dance of Gujarat, Ramlila of
Varanasi, Dusshera of Mysore, and
Durga Puja of Bengal need special
mention.

Anglo Eastern’s showcased its love for the festive
season which reflected at “Dandiya Nite 2013”.
Amidst the festivities with Garba magic picking
up and while the weather is filled with spiritual
,energetic musical beats. they came up with an event
to enjoy these high voltage moments & celebrate
the festival in complete Anglo-Eastern style.
The “Dandiya Nite – 2013” was held on 11th
October 2013 (Friday) at Leela Business Park
premises itself.

The real heart of the city as we speak of
Kolkata lies in its people. Durga puja is
the central festival in my city- KOLKATA.
As the ‘Sarat’ season finally arrives, the
countdown has already began with the
cool breeze in the morning, the sunlight
with new rays of hope, beautiful scent
of newness and the feeling of content.
The showcase of the beautiful lightings
across the streets, preparation of
various new flavours of sweets, the
sound of dhaks (traditional drum), a
different feeling of excitement and
belonging all hinting at the homecoming
of our “MAA”-Goddess Durga.

“goj”(elephant). Though durga puja
symbolizes the eternal struggle of
good over evil, I would associate
the festival of ‘Durga Puja’ as an
expression of homecoming joy,
happiness, laughter and longing that
are attached to the homecoming that
are all manifested in Durga puja.
This is the time of spontaneous
outburst of goodwill and cheer. For
the four days of Durga puja, there
is an eternal magic in the air and
people forget all their miseries and
troubles, this is the time which clearly
provides a break from the dull routine
of daily life and rejuvenates our souls
and spirits to face the challenges
throughout the forthcoming year until
it’s the time for the next Durga puja.
All that matters are the goodness, the
prayers and the hopes for a better
tomorrow as “Maa” has come home
with special gifts for each of us.
It is the homecoming indeed, the
daughter has come home and it conveys
fullness. The first beat of the dhak falls
on our ears like gentle caress. There is a
sudden change in the mood and people
start feeling happy and jovial. The city
is all decked up like a beautiful bride.
The four days of colorfulness and great
outburst of good energy followed by
pandal hopping day and night, various
puja special food and not to forget the
specially made sweets with amazing
flavours is what the kolkatans look
forward to every year.

Eid-ul-Adha (‘festival of Sacrifice’), also known as
the Greater Eid, is the second most important festival in the Muslim calendar.

Eid-ul-Adha celebrates the occasion when Allah
appeared to Ibrahim in a dream and asked him to
sacrifice his son Isma’il as an act of obedience to
God.
The devil tempted Ibrahim by saying he should
disobey Allah and spare his son. As Ibrahim was
about to kill his son, Allah stopped him and gave
him a lamb to sacrifice instead. Today Muslims all
over the world, who can afford it, sacrifice a sheep

few festivals in the world can match Diwali.
Markets suddenly come to life with panoply
of mithais, clothes and household utensils.
Homes are lit up with twinkling earthen
lamps and candles. Despite the diversity,
Diwali is perhaps the only festival that is
celebrated throughout India in one form or
another.
Eco-Friendly Diwali
An increasing number of educated urban
people now prefer to celebrate an ecofriendly Diwali. Let us see how we could
contribute in making this Diwali eco-friendly,
and still make it a delightful festival.

Do It Yourself (DIY) & get your CreaTive

• Flower petals

Procedure for Making Floating Candle
• Take a paper cup (easily available in
market, generally used in tea stall for serving
tea.)
• Take wax in a container and heat it on a
slow flame. [You can melt a few half used
candles]
• Mean while take a thick thread tie it with
pencil. Be careful to place the candle exactly
at the centre.
• Pour the melted wax in a paper cup.
• Keep it aside for cooling.
• After 15 minutes, once the wax is settled;
gradually pull off the pencil.
• Now hold the cup and tear the paper cup
as shown below. Step 2

• Take a crystal bowl add some water and a
spoon full of vermilion (Sindoor) in it.
• Add flower petals( you can use Rose and
Marigold flower )
• Place a candle carefully in the bowl.
