“Delusion”
Saturday, October 15 at 8 pm
$57/$47/$37 save
One of the seminal artists of our time, Laurie Anderson’s
genre-crossing work combines performance, film,
music, installation, writing, photography, and sculpture.
Using violin, electronic puppetry, and visuals, Delusion
tells its story in the colorful and poetic language that
has become Anderson’s trademark. Conceived as a
series of short mystery plays, Delusion jump-cuts
between the everyday and the mythic to tell a complex
story about longing, memory, and identity. Inspired by
the decline of her mother, and employing a series of
altered voices and imaginary guests, Delusion is about
the pleasure of language and the possibility of a world
made entirely of words.

Thursday, October 6 at 7:30 pm $42/$33/$24 save
In 1914, Ernest Shackleton and 27 others set out to be the first team of explorers to cross Antarctica. After their ship, The Endurance, froze and eventually
sank, they embarked on a harrowing two-year journey of survival in the harshest climate on earth. Created by New York-based company Phantom Limb
(Jessica Grindstaff and Erik Sanko), co-conceived with Kronos Quartet, and joined by an extraordinary team of multi-disciplinary collaborators, 69°S.
is a narrative installation-in-motion in which puppetry, music, film, and field recordings from Phantom Limb’s research trip to Antarctica meld to create
a stunning emotional journey. Exploring such important themes as the price of knowledge, the inevitability of adversity, climate change, and the power
of endurance and camaraderie, 69°S. resonates powerfully in 21st-century hearts and minds.

Discovering the points at which African and American music strike
sparks off each other, former James Brown bandleader Pee Wee Ellis,
band member Maceo Parker, and a host of other stars bring the Godfather of
Soul’s music full circle in this innovative, rhythm-fueled tribute of Afro-funk. As
much as the music of Africa influenced Brown’s style, he likewise inspired an entire
generation of African artists. Brown’s music was immensely popular, deeply felt, and
vastly influential in Africa; Still Black, Still Proud celebrates Brown’s lasting legacy
while exploring the deep relationship between soul, funk, and modern African music.
Artists from the US and Africa join together to form an ensemble that the Boston Globe
calls “a pancontinental funk-soul supergroup.”

Think of traditional African-American music, and the genres that come to mind are gospel,
blues, and jazz; few people think of old-time string band music. The Carolina Chocolate
Drops are the newest and youngest players in a long lineage of Black String Bands,
performing their style of traditional roots music that Rolling Stone described as “dirt-floordance electricity.” Rooted by the infectious rhythms of guitar and jug alongside banjo, fiddle,
and harmonica, the Carolina Chocolate Drops joyfully revisit the string band and jug band
music of the ‘20s and ‘30s as heard on their 2011 Grammy-winning album, Genuine Negro
Jig. The group has opened for Taj Mahal, performed at Bonnaroo, and made appearances
on NPR’s Fresh Air and A Prairie Home Companion.

“The Intergalactic Nemesis”
Thursday, January 19 at 7:30 pm $35/$29/$22 save
The year is 1933. Pulitzer-winning reporter Molly Sloan, her intrepid
assistant Timmy Mendez, and a mysterious librarian named Ben Wilcott face
the most serious threat Earth has ever known: an impending invasion of
sludge monsters from the planet Zygon. This period sci-fi/horror/suspense/
comedy/romance is presented for all ages and in a fresh new format.
As three actors, one Foley artist, and a keyboardist perform live voices,
sound effects, and music, more than 1,000 hand-drawn, full-color,
high-resolution, mind-blowing comic book images blast from the screen.
The Intergalactic Nemesis is a hilarious, uplifting adventure of heroes-bycircumstance overcoming impossible odds.

Circa is Australia’s most innovative circus company—a theater of acrobatics,
sound, and light images that The Herald (UK) hails as “truly a circus, but with
a poetic, life-affirming modern twist.” A spectacle that leaves audiences of
all ages spellbound, this Australian group performs a remix of their most
popular shows: The Space Between; by the light of stars that are no longer…;
and FURIOSO. Extreme physical feats are framed by dramatic lighting and
projections and set to an eclectic soundtrack ranging from Leonard Cohen
and Radiohead to Aphex Twin. The result is an altogether new kind of circus,
at once lyrical, sensual, intense, and thoroughly unforgettable.

If you see one group of multi-faceted new-vaudevillians at the apex of their ambidextrous and alliterative
ability, make sure you see the Flying Karamazov Brothers too. Fun for all ages, these are not just any
wild-haired, juggling, flame-throwing, kilt-and-tutu wearing performers. The four zany brothers deliver
visual and verbal one-liners, all while creatively tossing about anything they can get their hands on.
At the Flynn, you’re invited to bring objects to the theater for the brothers to keep airborne in a challenge
that ends either with a pie in the face or a standing ovation. As director/founder/performer Paul Magid
says, “Juggling is dropping.”

Featuring a 30-member cast, a live orchestra, elegant costumes,
lively dancing, and show-stopping special effects, Nebraska Theatre
Caravan’s beautifully staged musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’
classic, A Christmas Carol, is a perennial Flynn holiday favorite.
This beloved performance shares the tale of tight-fisted, middle-class
merchant Ebenezer Scrooge, and ultimately shows that a greedy
world can be healed by brotherhood and unselfishness.
