When the Chamber’s iPhone App
was launched at the March Business Connection Luncheon, member
Michelle Bouse downloaded
the app before the presentation was even finished. That
decision paid off just days later
when the door lock to her business, Michelle Bouse’s Beauty
Boutique, broke just before she
and her stylist were booked with
appointments at the spa.
Unable to contact her landlord
and with no way to access her business, Michelle remembered the Chamber’s
iPhone app. “I opened my iPhone and
immediately thought of the Burbank
Chamber application to find a locksmith,”
she said. “Within one minute I was on the
phone with a locksmith who was able to
come by within 20 minutes. I was
completely locked out of my business and my landlord was not in. I
had no resources to look up a local
business. With only a few taps on
my phone I located, called and
scheduled help.
“I can’t tell you how valuable this new application is!”
she added. “Thank you to all
who were involved in the
development and the launching of the Burbank Chamber iPhone
application.”
“The new application is wonderful
and really saved me,” she concluded.
“Now we are back to business as usual
and I have the comfort of knowing if I
need help locally I have all the contacts I
need right on my iPhone!”
Showcase Cabaret Provides Evening
of Elegance and Entertainment
With all the elegance and excitement
of a night on Broadway, the Burbank
Chamber of Commerce treated attendees at their Showcase
Cabaret to a special
musical experience.
Entering the
Grand Ballroom of the
Sheraton Universal
Hotel, guests were surrounded by posters of
some of Warner Bros.’
most famous musicals. Each table also
featured a different
Warner Bros. musical
production, complete
with notes indicating
which films were shot
in Burbank and the
awards and recognition each received.
Guests were greeted by the talented
Barry Lamster on the baby grand piano.
The dinner show featured Burbank’s own
Gino Gaudio and the Showase Singers, who
performed numbers from Cabaret, Beauty
and the Beast, Camelot, Mame, Wicked,
Brigadoon, Gypsy, Pirates of Penzance, La
Boheme, Phantom of the Opera, Chicago,
My Fair Lady, and South Pacific. A special
section of the program featured favorite
operatic excerpts. The Showcase Singers’
magnificent performance brought guests
to their feet in a spontaneous and welldeserved standing ovation.
Although the evening focused on
entertainment, the Chamber’s Chairman
of the Board, Don St. Clair, acknowledged
in his written welcome that there is still
work to be done to overcome the economic
issues faced by the business community.
“One year ago we spoke of the economic
challenges before us,” he wrote. “The
skies were dark. Today, many of the same
challenges exist. Yet, there is a sense of a
storm that is passing. Much work remains.
But gently and with great purpose our
sense of optimism is reasserting itself. We

are a great city, in a great state, in a great
nation. We will prevail. At the Chamber,
we are proud of our role in advocating for
business. We are also mindful that we are
but one part of a complex machine. We
pledge to continue working as your partner
in making the city, and the region, a better
place to live and work.”
The Walt Disney Company and Warner
Bros. Entertainment Inc. were Cabaret
Sponsors for the event. Camelot Sponsors
were the Community Development Department, Cusumano Real Estate Group, NBC
Universal, and Woodbury University. Cats
Sponsors included the Bob Hope Airport,
Burbank Water and Power, Community
Bank, Counterintuity, Patterson Graphics
Corporation, and Providence Saint Joseph
Medical Center. The Burbank Leader, The
Gas Co., and Union Bank of California
were Carousel Sponsors.
Special thanks also go to Business
Life Magazine, Continental Transportation Services, Graphics Two, Handy
Market, and the San Fernando Valley
Business Journal.

Disney Family Cancer Center’s Innovative Patient I.D. System Wins National Award
The new Roy and Patricia Disney
Family Cancer Center at Providence Saint
Joseph Medical Center won top national
honors today for its use of a state-of-theart radio-frequency identification system
designed to put patients at ease during
cancer treatment.
Application of this cutting-edge
technology that allows patients to control
lighting, music, temperature and even video
in their exam and treatment rooms earned
the Disney Family Cancer Center the RFID
Journal’s 2010 award for “Most Innovative
use of RFID.”
“I think it’s a great idea, a great use
of technology” patient Tina May said.
“They’re making a nicer situation for someone going through such a horrible time.”
Raymond Lowe, director of information service operations at Providence Saint
Joseph Medical Center, and Steve Merlo,
the hospital’s director of infrastructure
technology, traveled to Orlando this week
to accept the award.
“This award illustrates our commitment to innovative patient care,” Lowe said.
“These technologies have made a direct and
positive impact on the lives of our patients
during difficult times. We are honored by
the industry’s recognition.”
The cancer center, which opened in
February, issues to all patients identification badges that are programmed with their
pre-selected preferences for the ambience
during treatment. The goal is to empower
patients by giving them choices to make
them feel more comfortable during radiation and other treatment.
“This was a collaborative team effort to
develop a system that would give patients
some control during a very difficult time,”
said Arnold R. Schaffer, senior vice president and regional chief executive of Providence Health & Services, California.
“Innovation is hard to describe but easy
to identify when you see it. This team’s
ingenuity, creativity and drive are to be
applauded.”
The badges contain RFID chips that
track patients, who are encouraged to stroll
in the outdoor healing garden, visit the
resource center or the Personal Appearance Boutique or take advantage of yoga
and other exercise programs during visits
to the center. When patients arrive, the
system automatically sends a text message
alerting the reception desk and providing
information such as the patient’s assigned
room number and appointment schedule.
The system also alerts the nursing staff via
wireless phones when patients enter waiting rooms, so nurses can greet them.
“We want our patients to feel free to
explore the center,” said Jennifer Schaab,
administrator of the cancer center. “Rather
than sit nervously in a waiting area, this
empowers them at a very vulnerable time.
It’s very high-tech, but in a low-key way
that contributes to the healing process.”
The cancer center was among a broad
range of 20 private companies, government agencies and nonprofit organizations
nominated for the award. The finalists for
the innovative-use award included a global
energy giant and the U.S. Department of
Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory for
its use of RFID to modernize the management of nuclear materials.
The four-story, 55,000-square-foot
cancer center is dedicated to treating mind,
body and spirit.

SUPERINTENDENTʼS MESSAGE:
NEW
Affordable Benefit Administrators, Inc.
Corporate - Burbank, CA

By Dr. Kevin Jolly
There have been several special
events in the school district that have
happened this month. I would like to
take this opportunity to highlight just
three. Special recognitions include the
advocacy work of one of our PTA’s, a great
trip for one of our music groups, and the
advancement of three schools towards
state designation.
The Edison Elementary School PTA
has won the prestigious Spotlight Award
for Unit Advocacy from the California
Parent Teacher Association. This is in
recognition of all the work that was done
to secure a crossing guard at the corner
of Chandler and Keystone. The Edison
School PTA Unit will be honored at the
State Convention at the end of April.
The Burroughs High School Powerhouse show choir was featured on the
“Oprah Winfrey Show” on April 7th.
This came about as a result of a national
search for show choir talent due to another
season being scheduled for Fox’s “Glee”
television show. The choir, under the direction of Vocal Music Instructor Brendan
Jennings, was flown back to Chicago by
the Oprah Winfrey Show for a taping at
the beginning of the month.
Finally, all three of our elementary
schools that were eligible to be California
Distinguished Schools have completed
successful site visits, and are being recom-

BURBANK BUSINESS JOURNAL
OURNAL
To All Burbank Businesses:
An Important Reminder Regarding Your Water Service
Southern California is in the midst of a serious water supply shortage. An Urgent Notice was
sent in February to all local businesses stating that the City of Burbank requires that all multifamily residential, commercial and industrial water service customers certify that the
following water efficiency measures have been installed on their property by June 30, 2010.
This date has been extended to October 31, 2010. (Per Article XI, Section 2 of the City of
Burbank Fiscal Year 2009-2010 Fee Schedule.)
Measure
Efficiency Requirement
Showerheads
2.5 gallons per minute or less
Kitchen Faucet Aerators
2.0 gallons per minute or less
All other Faucet Aerators 1.0 gallon per minute or less
Toilets
1.6 gallons per flush or less
Urinals
Either: (a) waterless urinals OR (b) urinals 1.0 gallon per flush or
less PLUS all lavatory faucet aerators 0.5 gallons per minute or less
Certify to avoid the surcharge. Compliance must be achieved by October 31, 2010 through a
completed “Certificate of Compliance” form, which may be downloaded from
BurbankWaterAndPower.com. Customers failing to certify compliance will be subject to a
25% surcharge on their monthly water charges beginning November 1, 2010. At any time, a
customer may install the required measures and request an inspection. Upon successful
inspection, the surcharge will be discontinued. If non-compliance continues beyond a 12 month
period, the surcharge will increase to 50% per month, until compliance occurs.
BWP can help. BWP provides showerheads and aerators for free to Burbank businesses and
residents. Demand for these items has been high, so before dropping by BWP’s Conservation
Services desk at 164 W. Magnolia Blvd. to pick up the items, call our offices first at
818-238-3730 to verify that the items you need are in stock. We also offer the
for small to mid-sized businesses. Business Bucks provides a free onsite review of
your facility’s energy and water use, and up to $2,000 in energy and water efficiency
installations, including the required water efficiency measures. For information on Business
Bucks, visit us online at BurbankWaterandPower.com.
Homeowner’s Associations. These water efficiency requirements apply to all units, as well as
shared facilities areas, in apartment buildings. For Homeowner’s Associations, the requirements
apply to the shared facilities areas only. Examples of shared facilities include recreation and
exercise facilities, and laundry and pool areas.
If you have any questions about these requirements, please do not hesitate to call BWP at
818-238-3700.
Thank you for your attention to this important information!
